Monaco forward Anthony Martial became Manchester United’s biggest signing of the summer transfer window yesterday afternoon after joining in a staggering deal reported to be worth £36 million.

After welcoming the world’s most expensive teenager to Old Trafford, Louis van Gaal hailed the new boy’s versatility before suggesting he will be allowed to settle into life in the Premier League:

“Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco. I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League.”

The History

Born in Massy (a suburban commune of Paris), Martial cut his teeth at the local youth academy of CO Les Ulis, before earning a big move to Lyon at the age of 14. During his second campaign with their U17 squad, the burgeoning talent amassed a whopping 31 goals in 21 outings, prompting a call-up to the France U17s. Martial made his senior league bow in February 2013 and went on to notch another two substitute appearances over the course of that campaign.

Identifying the untapped potential within the fleet-footed frontman, Monaco recruited Martial in the summer of 2013 for a €5 million fee. Still just 17 years of age, he tallied 11 appearances (eight starts) in the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, registering two goals and one assist in the process.

Martial initially struggled to cement a regular role for Monaco last term. He featured in the first XI in just two of the first 15 Gameweeks before establishing himself in the second half of the campaign, starting all but six league ties thereafter. Having chalked up an underwhelming haul of one goal and three assists by Gameweek 27, Martial hit a rich vein of form, carding eight goals and one assist in the final 12 rounds of fixtures.

In terms of his involvement beyond Ligue 1, Martial managed two goals in as many starts in the French Cup and a goal scoring cameo in the French League Cup. On the European front, he recorded five starts in the Champions League, claiming an assist during Monaco’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates

Martial was handed his maiden call-up to France’s senior squad for their upcoming international friendlies against Portugal and Serbia. Since 2013, the precocious youngster has been a regular fixture for the France U21s, notching four goals in 12 appearances.

The Prospects

The 19-year-old – who arrives at Old Trafford on a four-year deal with the option for another year – has drawn comparisons with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry due to his pace, movement and eye for goal. Discussing his role for United, Martial admitted his preferred position is through the middle, though is willing to play wherever Van Gaal fields him:

“Since I was young, people have told me I have the right characteristics to play in England. I’m really keen to develop my game in the English league and prove my worth. He (van Gaal) asked me my preferred position – I’d prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions. It’s the coach who decides but whatever position I’ll do the best I can.”

Given that a criticism much-levelled at Man United this term has been the glacial speed of their build-up play and a lack of thrust on the counter, Van Gaal might be tempted to explore Martial as a wide option. With Memphis Depay looking nailed-on down the left, the Frenchman could switch to the right, thus affording Juan Mata to take up the central role behind Wayne Rooney. Arguably, Mata – who has so far equalled Rooney and Depay’s combined FPL score of 21 points – could prove the main beneficiary in such a scenario.

Alternatively, the Dutch boss might elect to start the ex-Lyon hit man through the middle – either in the support role or as the lone striker, which would see the out-of-form Rooney shift into the number ten role. Certainly, United’s skipper is struggling to fashion clear-cut chances as the spearhead of their attack, having tallied just eight attempts (three on target) in four starts. With Rooney now in the midst of a ten-match barren spell, such a scenario might better play to his strengths at this stage of his career.

Scrutinising Martial’s underlying statistics from the previous campaign, he racked up goals at a greater frequency (one every 200.4 minutes) than Rooney (251.6), Robin van Persie (221) and Radamel Falcao (341.3). Moreover, his shot accuracy (45.1%) was second only to Van Persie (47.4%), while his conversion rate (17.6%) was considerably better than Man United’s most clinical finisher, Rooney (15.2%).

Ultimately, the magnitude of Martial’s Fantasy appeal will largely be dictated by where Van Gaal intends to field him. Priced at 8.0 and classified as a forward, the rangy Frenchman would leap onto many a watchlist if afforded a central striker role, furnishing us with an enticing alternative to the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Graziano Pelle in that bracket. On the other hand, a role on the flank would likely deter prospective investors from tying up one of their three forward slots.

Even for those managers keen to acquire Martial at this early stage, the Red Devils’ upcoming schedule (LIV, sou, SUN, ARS, eve, MCI) makes for grim reading. Considering that United have managed just three goals, 26 attempts inside the box and three big chances this term, it would take a significant leap of faith to back Martial to flourish over that stretch. The fixtures do take a turn for the better around Gameweek 11, though, allowing the new boy a chance to settle before considering investment.

On a WC and brought in Ayew and Gomis to catch their price rises but will only keep one as I need to upgrade my DF.

    Question....who to keep?

Ayew seems to have a higher ceiling than Gomis but to me there seems to be plenty of other MD options and not a whole lot of FW options so am leaning towards Gomis.

    Thoughts?

I'm keeping both until it's clearer which one to drop or a target acquisition in either mid or striker necessitates it

Done exactly the same thing, activate wildcard, slot Ayew and Gomis in and catch a price rise with the intention of selling one.

At the moment though I'm leaning towards keeping both. Risky, but the fixtures are good and they are the two spearheading the Swansea attack. I think it's more important to keep form midfielders/attackers than upgrade your defence, especially when there's a lot of good picks in the 4.5-5m range.

Ultimately if I had to pick I would keep Gomis, there's much more flexibility in midfield options than up front at the moment and the money recouped turning Ayew into a 4.5m mid and then investing in Hazard/Sanchez when they come good will be worth it.

Makes Depay a more attractive or less attractive option? I think he'll keep his place on the left regardless but will it improve his assist potential?

Yea Depay is nailed on LW, all depends where Martial plays, if he starts that is.
Depay is still a solid option IMHO and should start to pick up points soon. Some convincing displays in europe (all be it against weaker opposition) has persuaded me to keep him.

Same here, I'm stuck with him all season anyway cos I'm in a draft league but I remain optimistic. United have got to start scoring goals soon, and he's one of very few options to get involved, I think he'll start getting assists atleast. Although United do have a very tough run up til gw10. You think he'll pick up after that then?

I think (hope) you'll be rewarded. As you say, I expect him to contribute more assists over the next few game weeks but then really kick on with his goal scoring ability and show his true potential.

I have players in my team that are doing it for me atm, but their fixtures are getting tougher when uniteds ease up, so I may well need him to step up come November time
Can you give me some insight to my other players who are currently not performing well:
            Panti
            Chester
            Eriksen

Eriksen's injured isn't he? Great option when fit though.

Chester will have Dawson & Evans to contend with, so he's not nailed on at all.

Panti is a good GK but Sunderland are in awful form atm

I have Fabianski so Panti is really just back up anyway. Was hoping to rotate them as fixtures looked great but hasn't worked out as sun have been awful. Eriksen is back next week I believe.
I picked Panti, Chester, Cedric and Ivan based on what this website said before the season started. Cedric has turned out pretty good atleast!

hmmmm, i'd question your views here. a) United (my team) broke the transfer record year after year during the 90s, so we arguably bought it then too.

but having to spend huge amounts on unproven youngsters is hardly buying the title. we have so much revenue coming in via sponsorship deals that we get rinsed for every purchase, we've not exactly gone and bought Pogba, Cavani & co have we...which would be closer to achieving the title....this is building for the future.

"At this stage of his career". He will be like Ronaldo was. Take a couple of seasons to bed in then who knows. Right now Utd need star quality not a kid with potential. And not at £36m.

True, but clearly all the 'star quality' players weren't moving, Benzema, Lacazettei, Higuaín to name 3. The only way to go was invest in youth and maybe pay over the odds to secure them. As you say take a couple of seasons to bed in then who knows, its a risk.

Your take on 'investing in youth' is slightly removed from my interpretation of it. I think it usually refers to a philosophy that doesn't involve spunking £36 million on one player.

The definition of an investment is to buy a player, for a large or small amount, that has the potential to repay that investment over time, ether financially or in footballing terms with goals, assist, trophies etc.

Martial is the definition of that.

if only it was as simple as clicking our fingers and muller lewandowski bale come running... in reality though its not..

this kid obviuosly has alot of raw potential.. pace and power to run in behind is something our attack is sorely lacking and im very excited by him..

astronomical fee no doubt but such is todays market and at such a young age he's an investment..

Maybe they've realised they can't get anyone they want so their plan now is to spend so much money on tat so that market prices become inflated and thus other PL clubs can't afford the better players they have a chance of getting. :p

I see a lot of RMTs criticised with "you'll have a benching headache". Is this a season where a benching headache about mid-priced-and-firing players is preferable to a narrow selection of expensive-and-not-firing-but-working-on-the-assumption-they-will-come-good-eventually players?

He (van Gaal) asked me my preferred position – I’d prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions

    🙂

Another one to be played out of position then

And to prove his philosophy and that he's the boss never in the centre

The kid would be better of saying he prefers to play on the wing

I only see him playing in 2 positions for us (although he is capable of playing in any of the attacking places). Wide right to stretch the game with his pace or up top No.9 with ether Rooney or Mata in behind.

      Mata -- Rooney -- Depay
      --------- Martial ---------

      or

      Martial -- Mata -- Depay
      --------- Rooney ---------

Big mistake Moyes made is not to go into Old Trafford welding a axe and lose all those players that lost him his job

Fergie should have had no say in his successor after he decided to leave imo

Interested to know. Why did Moyes get so much stick but LvG gets so little.

Given their relative spend on players and team performance you'd think LvG would be getting a lot more stick.

I think LvG gets quite a bit of stick, but I know what you mean. People mainly talk about how he makes odd decisions and take the pish out of his filosofee, but don't tend to say he's a crap manager like they did with Moyes.

I think with Van Gaal there is this expectation that he will ev ntually come good, I also think his perceived success at the World Cup with Holland helped his case a bit. You would hve thought he was the Messiah when he first took over. Personally, I think he was very lucky in the World Cup with Holland

perceived? that was one of the weakest dutch squads in recent history he guided to the semi finals

a team fancied by many to be knocked out in the groups after being landed with spain and chile..

takes a bit more than luck to beat spain 5-1

Because Moyes was trying to follow on from Fergie so it was the first season United fans had to deal with the fact that things werent good and werent going to get better quickly. I think by the time LVG arrived they had realised this and were less vocal. Acceptance is the word I think

True but Moyes was the fall guy.
Lvg has turned them into Chelsea, which is hilarious cos for years United fans have criticised Chelsea and city for buying titles, and now United are just doing the same but will probably fail for a few years more... and he's not even Mourinho, Mourinho is a professional annoying twat with first class honours, lvg is just a boring sad man.

Champions, your a funny guy Nige.... They were an ageing team that Fergie luckily managed to steer to the most unexpected title. That was mainly down to City and Chelsea being quite a bit poorer than they normally are. Rio, Scholes, Vidic. etc etc... Then start adding in Nani. Anderson and co.. Moyes was the fall guy for Fergie letting things slip towards the end of his tenure.

you need to take your red speces off for a minute, we all know they won the league, so in that respect they were Champions but no-one knows how Fergie pulled that one off with that team. A poor Season for City and Chelsea is the most likely reason. Moyes didnt get the sme time that Van Gaal has been given to make the changes necessary but after the sme amount of time in the job, 10 months their records were almost identical from what I remember with the only real difference being that at the time Van Gaal had spent 3 times S much as Moyes

Aye, we know about Fergie and how good he was, but even given his greatness, most people still look on the particular title as his best, the ne people will look back on and still be scratching their heads at saying "How the hell did he manage that". The reason being, that it was an ageing squad with a few players who probably shouldnt have had a hope of winning it. Moyes then had to do something with that same group the following year and couldnt.

moyes had a team and the finances available to at the very least keep those champions in the top 4... he finished 7th and along the way was hammered at home 3-0 by city and liverpool their 2 fiercest rivals dont get me started on the other home defeats..

LVG had to pick up the pieces of that mess and the loss of his captain and vice captain and start from scratch... points tallys may have been similar but he delivered champions league football and his record in the big matches against the top 4 was excellent..

it aint neither my fault nor LVG that moyes couldnt spend the money that was available to him.. what self respecting world class talent was going to sign up and play under his methods?

u pointed to the fact that united had a pretty bang average squad at the end of fergies reign which i totally agree so surely by that token u would agree that major investment was needed? thats how football works u spend big or get left behind and we were in big danger of that..

im not one of these united fans that thinks because of who we are we have a god given right to win every trophy going and win season after season.. we may well finish empty handed again but what we must do is compete..

if he doesnt then he will face the same pressure as any other manager and may well be sent packing thats the nature of the business..

what im not having is people getting on his back week after week win or lose people who arent even supporters of the club.. hes been there just over a year seen over 3 transfer windows and strengthened that squad immeasuably in alot of areas.. he's far from finished and iv every faith we are in good hands now and going forward

For me the main difference between the two is competing against the top teams. Under Moyes we never looked like winning against any of City, Chelsea, Pool, Spurs, etc. Arsenal was only exception. With LvG we beat every top team bar Chelsea, and those were tight games.

It would have been the same at any other club. It was a massive fall and it shouldn't have been as bad as it was. Moyes failed to strengthen properly or get the team playing well enough to at least compete for a CL spot. It was a no brainer to have him sacked

Defend him all you little like but he didn't do a good enough job. 4th or even 5th and he would have been cut some slack but 7th is too much really. I stuck by him till the end but even Moyes supporters like myself knew it wasn't working. He had lost the dressing room and the support. A sad end but a necessary one.

It was always going to be tough with the Rooney scenario hanging over him. I think most managers would have had a problem that season managing United. They needed to go through big changes at the club and the fans were too impatient after having it easy for years with Fergie at the helm

Mate, change was needed. It wasn't working and I don't thing any of the candidates could have done worse. Remember Mourinho was an option as manager over Moyes. Do you think he would have finished 7th?

your comparing Moyes with Mourinho now, no I dont think he wouldve, what I am saying is that I dont think Van Gaal would have done much better than what Moyes done with that squad, at that time. I also dont feel that Fergie left United in a good way at the time. its almost as if Fergie could only see the finishing line, i.e. his retirement date and had made no contingency plan beyond his retirement

I agree with the bit about Fergie but disagree with the bit about LVG. His pedigree as a manager means he would have been more successful in the transfer market. He would have been better at managing big egos too

According to the scout poll comfortably the two most popular captains are Aguero and Sanchez this week but both have internationals, Sanchez in Chile and Aguero in Texas. Add this to champions league kicking off few days after the prem restarts and i think there is a real possibility of curtailed gametme for these two. Whos considering a different cap? Im very tempted by Harry Kane even though he has been average at best so far

I am! Don't think Harry Kane is the answer though, Swansea, Bournemouth, West Ham and Leicester attacks look the best good options to me for Gameweek 5.

I've submitted anohter community article on alternative captains (see last weeks below) for this gameweek which will probably go up in a few days.

Like Watfords defence though so have ruled out Swansea. Wilson a good choice, problem with hammers is they spread their points around.
Kane is a punt given his form but he has to score sometime and Sunderland are the perfect opponnents

i think he is a good pick but i prefer to have a tv cap (when theres no standout option), floored logic i know but have to play this game to suit your own enjoyment 🙂
May well bottle it though coz Kane has been underhelming to say the least

wouldn't put too much into a week yet

but quite unsure which two defenders will see the most minutes if all our healthy over the course of the season.... seems like Azpi & Cahill... but then Terry bounces back every time we think he's toast
