Eden Hazard banishes his out-of-sorts domestic displays to grab the winner for Belgium. Riyad Mahrez recovers from a back problem to help steer Algeria to victory, whilst Victor Wanyama and Christian Benteke shrug off illness and injury to turn out for Kenya and Belgium respectively.

Hazard Fires Belgium to Victory

Eden Hazard steered Belgium to a crucial 1-0 win over Cyprus courtesy of a goal four minutes from time. The Chelsea winger arrived late in the box and stroked home Dries Mertens’ cut-back from the byline, though according to manager Marc Wilmots, he was lucky to still be on the pitch:

“He (Hazard) was the worst tonight. I thought about substituting him, but in the last 10 minutes he always has the ability to do that. At the World Cup, this was the case. I obviously expect more from him, but he will grow as the season progresses.”

The Scout Says: For Hazard’s 36.3% ownership, the Belgian’s first goal from open play this term will hopefully serve as the fillip to inspire similar driving runs into the box over the Blues’ next pair of fixtures (eve, ARS). Although his key pass tally (13) is strong and ranks third among all midfielders, Hazard has struggled to translate penalty-box touches (21) into attempts (four), belying his 11.4 price tag. In contrast, Pedro – who’s clocked under half the minutes of Hazard – has converted 11 penalty-box touches into seven attempts, with the deep-lying Cesc Fabregas (11 to six) also finding more space to fashion shots. While the latter’s poor form renders him a peripheral figure at present, the former – who’s tallied one goal and two assists in two starts – threatens to emerge as the prime route into Chelsea’s attack if Hazard continues to offer minimal goal threat.

Mahrez Grabs Assist for Algeria

The Leicester winger recovered from the back problem that forced him off against Bournemouth in the previous Gameweek to start for Algeria against Lesotho. Mahrez needed little time to continue his domestic form, providing the assist for Faouzi Ghoulam’s opener in a 3-1 win.

The Scout Says: Given his top-flight impact so far, Mahrez’ return to action is a welcome relief for Fantasy managers. After grabbing three goals and an assist over August, the Algerian has climbed from 5.5 to 6.1 since the start of the season, with over 1.1m FPL managers clambering on board the bandwagon. Sitting in just under 37% of sides, he now faces Villa, Stoke and Norwich in the next four Gameweeks as Claudio Ranieri’s side look to continue the series of displays that have guided them to third in the table, with the Foxes scoring eight times – a tally bettered only by City (ten) and West Ham (nine).

Benteke Recovers from Thigh Problem

The Liverpool striker recovered from a thigh injury to start yesterday’s match against Cyprus. Benteke lasted the first 45 minutes before being replaced by Anfield team-mate Divock Origi after the break.

The Scout Says: Benteke has been sold by more Fantasy managers than any other striker over the international break due to the injury concern. Over 122,000 FPL managers have parted company with the big Belgian, who is still the most popular striker in the game, with over 36% ownership, despite scoring just once so far. With Philippe Coutinho suspended for the weekend trip to United, Brendan Rodgers will be relieved that Benteke is back in the frame as the Reds look to recover from a galling 3-0 home loss to West Ham. Most Benteke owners will be happy to hold, given that he has back-to-back home matches with Norwich and Villa after the Old Trafford trip, but blank in those matches and the exodus will surely pick up pace.

Wanyama Turns out for Kenya

Having missed Southampton’s previous league match through illness, Victor Wanyama recovered in time to captain Kenya in a 2-1 home loss to Zambia yesterday afternoon.

The Scout Says: After scoring three times for the Saints last season, Wanyama started this term as the default budget midfielder for many Fantasy managers. With uncertainty surrounding his future prior to the closure of the transfer window, over 225,000 have parted company with the Kenyan, with his price resultantly dropping to just 4.4 in the FPL game. One look at the upcoming fixtures indicates he’ll be handed bench-warming duties for his 12% owners – with United, Swansea, Chelsea and Liverpool in the next six, Ronald Koeman’s men may struggle for points at either end of the pitch.

If Sanchez blanks again vs Stoke, what are your plans for him? Tough fixtures on the horizon. Keep or sell?

jonty offered a short reasoning as to why the lack of green and locked down
mainly due to post going off subject or off multi subject, think if he had just stuck to does RMT impact on price change it would have.
lock down was because it was growing arms and legs on both pro and anti side of debate

That post was basically asking, do the bandwagons on here adversely affect the price changes on FF, as this site is now being used by a large umber of players.

The problem was I believe it took RuthNZ about 10,000 words to say it.

By the way I also have been thinking for a while the issue around price changes especially on FFS template players.. The way the site is setup doesnt over members much privacy to discuss but that's the construct so have to bear with it i guess.

All all that was said was a player owned by active managers will fall in price faster than a player owned by inactive managers. And guess what, active managers will be more likely to visit sites such as FFS. He called it herd behaviour.

He has interesting things to say but there was not a lot of substance to that one imo. He completely missed the mark and managed to convince a lot of people while he's at it. I'll write that one off and look forward to the next one.

Don't bash the mods. A main part of why the thread was closed down for replies was because many of the replies were off topic slagging Ruth off for his style of posting - not because of the content of Ruth's original post.

Just to add that here is the response I posted earlier about that particular thread. There's not much more to add to this really, but I do think it is unfair to criticise the hard work of the moderation team in dealing with very difficult situations like this. Thanks Pasqualinho for sticking up for us. 🙂

I've emailed Ruth about why it wasn't hot topiced. I don't want to go into too much detail about that as that is between that poster and us. But I will say it wasn't because it was controversial. Each of the points raised - Should RMTs be banned and Transfer behaviour - as in the reasons why we make transfers, were hot topic worthy. But it was the way it was presented meant we couldn't hot topic it. It was neither one thing nor another. There were some really good comments made. But alot of the comments were just about the length and tone of the original comment and the actual Fantasy Football discussion was getting lost. I've locked replies now as it is becoming difficult for us to moderate all the negative posts about that poster. From a moderation point of view we could go through and spend time moderating out those negative comments -but that would give the wrong impression of how that post was actually being received. We could just delete the whole thing - but that's not fair on those that spent time putting their views across.

There are other factors that I don't want to go into here about why that post was a concern.

I think Ruth_NZ's posts are very interesting. I don't care about the tone. Even if I disagree with what he is saying his posts are thought provoking and i'd much rather read posts on the theory of FPL than endless RMTs.

If people don't like long posts then simply don't read or comment on them. The continuous castigating of Ruth_NZ by some posters is unedifying and reminiscent of schoolyard bullying.

RMT's are the scourge of every thread on every post. Unless it's a post designed as an RMT forum or is part of the scoutcast, then they shouldn't be posted in every other article.

Agree. It was an interesting debate even though he was wrong. Why threads have to be closed every time things get heated I really don't know. Banter police know no mercy. Just because a debate divulges into different areas and is 'neither here nor there' doesn't mean it should be stopped.

You know Balders said he was a moderator of this site: https://www.reddit.com/r/FantasyPL

So I went to it just to check it out and there in the upper right hand corner you have clear 2 choices:

        1) Submit RMT
        2) Submit Post

A lot of this could maybe be solved if FFS had that? What do you think Jonty? Would the FFS format be workable with 2 types of posts?

Yea, I like when you have the separate RMT articles, I used them last year. Just a thought, but the FPL site is offering that "scout surgery" help -- maybe FFS could offer a permanent space for something like that instead of only at busy periods. Anyway, thanks for a great site and for moderating.

I am from India (travel across) and have backpacked to Cambodia and bit of Thailand. Maybackpack to Philippines sometime soon and have done some research on it

I am not sure May is a good time though - it's hot (and humid) as hell....I wouldn't suggest most of India (unless you can bear 42 degrees 😛 ) - can definitely go to towards the mountains: Mcleodganj (my favorite place in India), Leh-Laddakh and Kasol, Gangtok, Tawang - easily take 3 weeks

Cambodia was my best travel ever, you can easily spend a month there: Siem Reap for the grand ruins, Pnom Penh for the history, Kampot, Sinhoukville and the islands....oh so good. You can even hire a sailboat for half a day 😉

Thailand is of course a travelers hangout - just try to stay away from places like Phuket or Pattaya

Philippines if you love water and beaches - Palawan and Borecay for starters

Also Vietnam (slightly harsh though, especially if not been to South east asia before) - Along bay, Mekong river and the culture in Ho Chi Minh

But it's gonna be hot and humid 😛

May is the only real time I can go, but I don't mind a bit of heat/humidity. Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam are the 3 I'm mainly keen on. I might try to spend a week in each. Cheers for the tips 😀 much appreciated.

              anytime 🙂

Start in Thailand, travel around. Take a bus to Cambodia (it won't be comfortable but definitely an experience. beware of the scams - yes, I am saying this despite being an Indian) and then take another bus from Cambodia to Vietnam

1 week in each country is too less though. You will have to rush and even then, you will experience only 1 or 2 places)

some buses are better than others now. Took a bus from Saigon to Phnon Phemn which had wifi, fresh croissants included. Probably the most conformable bus I have been anywhere in the world! Was cheap too (Company - Giant Ibis)

Oh yeah, inside Cambodia it is completely fine. I was talking about the inter-border bus - crossing the border and the visa and all that is part of that experience.

I'd consider Laos too. Luang Prabang, 4000 islands & places in the North like Nong Khiaw are amazing for travelling.

3 weeks though you should probably just do a maximum of 2 countries and even then you won't be able to do a huge amount of each country.

So, what Belgium NT coach Wilmots really said about his team/players:

    - Didn't press collectively: 6 players attacked, 4 defended, no collective work.

    - They could have tried long ball tactic with Benteke and Fellaini, but he chose to rather play fast on the ground.

    - Mertens made good effect when he entered for 2nd half.

    - Despite playing badly, made a lot of good chances and could have scored many goals

    - Explanation to poor performance may be in short preparation and tough start of season for the players, who played a tough match against Bosnia just 2 days before. Players WERE FATIGUED.

    - Players were down because of fatigue, but had the courage to go to search the 1-0. Even draw would not have been catastrophic.

    - He will not change the way they play, because they've played the same way for 3 years and it has worked brilliantly. (oh offs you blind monkey, can't you see it doesn't work at all!)

    - Year ago he would have taken Hazard off, but Hazard has gained maturity and at least he always tries till the end and often is decisive in the end, although he's too individualistic.

Hmm.. some sources say that he individually slated both Benteke and Hazard for having played badly (or being perhaps the worst player (Hazard) and even less good (Benteke)), and this is referred to RTBF, but in their after match interview he doesn't say this.

They look a better team without Benteke and Fellaini, to he honest. Technically gifted players in the likes of KDB and Hazard. Need a striker who runs in behind, makes space etc. And Fellaini, well, we know it's only the long ball tactic that works.

The only strikers Belgium have are - Benteke , Lukaku and Origi - and I like Lukaku and Fellaini or Benteke and Mertens......imo neither should Benteke and Fellaini play together nor Lukaku and Mertens

I'm amazed at generally how well international teams play during mid-season qualifiers. Must be difficult to be thrown together with people you don't play day to day with and expect to play a different way to your club side, build understanding with team mates etc after only a few days training.

Proof in the pudding will be the tournaments when the group of players are together and on the same hymn sheet for a prolonged period of time. I think form in other matches can generally be taken with a pinch of salt.

    UFPL help needed!

With my remaining transfers I need to get rid of 2 of the following 3. But which 2??

Zaha - not first choice at the moment but could pick up points if selected.
Sakho - has an arrest hanging over him but is nailed on if not in jail.
Benteke - not started brilliantly and might not be first choice once Sludge is back but is currently the lone striker in a good team.

Yeah, although if you have decent coverage across other teams (say 17 or 18 of them represented in the squad) it shouldn't make that much difference. Coverage may be a myth in the classic game but it definitely isn't in UFPL.

Also if I got rid of Benteke I'd get another Liverpool player in somewhere. Ideally Firmino but maybe Coutinho or the really avant garde Studge.

Zaha- uncertainty over his starting chances.
Benteke- Liverpool don't create enough chances and as a lone striker he doesn't look like scoring. I'm not sure the pairing of Sturridge and Benteke will work because they both like to occupy the same positions around the box.

Thanks folks. I'm edging towards keeping Zaha simply because his price doesn't make him as crucial to the squad as the prices of the other two. It's doing my head in though!

    re: Ruth's post...

..this is why, when choosing my non playing 2nd gk, my 4.0 5th def, or 4.5 5th mid, I always look for low ownership options. You don't want to be making transfers to these players solely for price reasons.

The popular ffs picks of milner/sterling/mane/ozil that were mentioned are obvs gonna be more volatile... that's the risk you take when follwoing the herd.
