Bacary Sagna limps out of France’s home clash with Serbia. Aleksandar Mitrovic grabs the visitors’ goal in a 2-1 defeat, Jon Walters and Kyle Lafferty stake a claim for domestic minutes with international goals, whilst Julian Speroni steps up his injury recovery with a run out for Palace reserves.

Walters Grabs Republic’s Winner

Jonathan Walters kept the Republic of Ireland’s automatic qualification hopes alive with a tap-in that granted Martin O’Neill’s outfit a 1-0 win over Georgia.

The Scout Says: After handing in a transfer request on deadline day, Walters will be hoping to return to first-team action this weekend as the Potters travel to Arsenal. The Gameweek 4 dismissals of Charlie Adam and Ibrahim Afellay certainly improve his prospects of a spot in the attacking midfield three. Mark Hughes could move Xherdan Shaqiri into the role in “the hole” to allow Walters a start on the right, though with the likes of Bojan and Stephen Ireland also in contention for the central berth, and Marko Arnautovic favourite for the left wing, Walters could be consigned to bench-warming duties yet again if Hughes chooses to field Shaqiri on the right for the third successive Gameweek.

Sagna Concern for City

After providing the assist for Blaise Matuidi’s opener, Bacary Sagna didn’t emerge for the second half of France’s win over Serbia after picking up an ankle knock in the first period.

The Scout Says: Over 120,000 Fantasy managers jumped on the Sagna bandwagon prior to the last two Gameweeks following news of Pablo Zabaleta’s knee injury absence. That 6.2% ownership will now be anxiously awaiting news on his fitness ahead of a trip to Crystal Palace, with £32 million summer signing Nicolas Otamendi likely to be handed his debut at Selhurst Park should the Frenchman fail to recover. Considering that City have yet to concede, Otamendi may initially take time to oust Eliaquim Mangala at centre-half, though the new boy’s versatility should allow him a first start as Manuel Pellegrini’s men look for a fifth successive clean sheet on Saturday.

Pulis Expects Berahino Return

Tony Pulis remains optimistic that Saido Berahino – despite insisting he would never don the Baggies strip again – will patch up his relationship with the club and return to action soon. The West Brom boss concedes he faces a tough task to get the England U21 international – who’s returned to training – back on board after his very public falling-out with Baggies chairman, Jeremy Peace:

“His gripe is with Jeremy – as far as I’m concerned, he will play for West Brom again. I want him to come back and to draw a line under it. It will be difficult to integrate him into the group and to get him to concentrate but that’s my job. I don’t think he will talk to Jeremy. The problem is that he thinks he is being used. I have spoken to Saido on the phone a couple of times and by text. He has had a couple of days away and hopefully that will clear his mind. On Monday I will have a good chat with him and then take him and his mum out for dinner in the evening to have a good chat. I think his tweet was aimed at the chairman more than the players, management, staff and supporters of the club.”

The Scout Says: Priced at 6.3 – and declining – Saido Berahino certainly possesses the ability to become a key contender at the price tag. Clearly, the first hurdle to overcome in the quest for viability will be selection; although Berahino is conceivably in line to start against Saints this weekend, Pulis may feel it sends out the wrong message to immediately reinstate him in the first XI. Secondly, the Baggies rank in the bottom six for shots inside the box (24), attempts on target (13) big chances (three) this term, which hardly encourages investment in their forward line. Nonetheless, West Brom’s excellent schedule leading up to Gameweek 12 (SOU, avl, EVE, cry, SUN, nor, LEI) ensures that we’ll be closely monitoring the West Midlanders’ – and Berahino’s – progress over that stretch.

Speroni steps up comeback

Julian Speroni played the full 90 minutes as Crystal Palace XI lost 3-2 to Huddersfield XI. The Argentine has been sidelined since the start of the season due to a hand injury.

The Scout Says: Speroni’s return to action has put Alex McCarthy’s 12% ownership on notice, with the budget shot-stopper facing the prospect of dropping out for the Eagles’ home tie against Manchester City. McCarthy played a pivotal part in Palace’s historic 2-1 triumph over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, rebuffing the Champions’ attack with seven saves, and his priced has risen from 4.0 to 4.1 as a result of Speroni’s absence. Providing he’s fully fit, though, the Argentine is likely to get the nod between the posts once again, leaving us without a single option in the sub-4.5 goalkeeper bracket.

Mitrovic Nets for Serbia

Newcastle frontman Aleksandar Mitrovic netted an instinctive close-range finish during Serbia’s 2-1 friendly defeat to France.

The Scout Says: Set to serve a three-match ban for a stamp on Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin, Mitrovic sits out a trip to West Ham United and back-to-back home ties (WAT, CHE), before potentially making his return when Newcastle travel to Manchester City in Gameweek 8. Only 20 years of age, the former Anderlecht marksman possesses an extraordinary proclivity for receiving bookings, having already tallied 47 yellow cards and six reds in his budding career. Mitrovic gave Fantasy managers food for thought in his first start of the campaign during Gameweek 3 – ranking joint-top for shots inside the box (four) among forwards – yet any enthusiasm in the 6.2-priced striker is ultimately tempered by his poor disciplinary record. Having been shifted to the bench in the last couple of matches, Papiss Cisse now looks set to lead the line against West Ham, Watford and Chelsea in Mitrovic’s absence.

Lafferty grabs draw for Ireland

Norwich’s Kyle Lafferty scored in the 93rd minute for Northern Island to earn his nation a 1-1 draw against Hungary in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

The Scout Says: Nursing an injury since June, Lafferty’s recovery furnishes Norwich boss Alex Neil with another alternative to the misfiring Cameron Jerome up front. Jerome’s failure to find the net in the first four Gameweeks saw the Canaries snap up Dieumerci MBokani from Dynamo Kiev on deadline day as Neil looks to improve upon a record that has seen them score just five of their 61 attempts on goal so far. Given that Lafferty was sent out on loan to Super Lig outfit Caykur Rizespor in February, though, he faces a tough task to climb up the pecking order and earns starts, bearing in mind that Neil prefers a lone striker system.

Central Midfield Boost for Pardew

James McArthur capitalised on a weak clearance from a corner during Scotland’s 3-2 defeat to Germany, firing in an equaliser from just inside the penalty area. Elsewhere in the Eagles camp, Yohan Cabaye was named among the subs for France having recuperated from a knock that he sustained last weekend.

The Scout Says: Buried beneath the wave of plaudits for Palace’s attacking contingent, McArthur has already matched his best assist haul (two) in the opening four Gameweeks this term. With no standout candidates in his price bracket, the 5.0-priced Scotland international is certainly worthy of a mention given that he ranks second among Palace’s midfielders – behind Jason Puncheon (nine) – for key passes (eight). His minimal goal threat (McArthur has fashioned zero shots at goal this campaign), however, serves as a deterrent, and with new boy Bakary Sako serving up 23 points in just two appearances, the former Wolves man – at just 5.5 – is starting to look the pick of the Palace midfield.

Ward-Prowse Nets Under 21s Winner

James Ward-Prowse helped England U21s kick off their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign with a win against Norway, scoring the only goal of the encounter from the penalty spot.

The Scout Says: Ward-Prowse has been used sparingly in the league by manager Ronald Koeman this term, with his first start arriving last weekend against Norwich City. In light of Victor Wanyama being omitted from the matchday squad as speculation mounted on his future at St Mary’s, the Saints academy product was deployed alongside Oriol Romeu in the double pivot – as opposed to a more familiar attacking midfield role. Koeman had high praise for the 20-year-old following his run-out against the Canaries, suggesting that Ward-Prowse’s intelligent distribution from deep could earn him further starts in that position. While he could well earn another outing next Gameweek against West Bromwich Albion, the return of Wanyama and the injured Jordy Clasie will provide fierce competition for places in the centre of the park.

With Mahrez, Ayew, Gomis, Kouyate et al continuing to produce the goods, is it time to seriously reassess our ideas of heavy-hitters? Do we persist with the quality, and underlying stats, of Sanchez and Aguero, or are we failing to see the wood for the trees?

If your main concentration is h2h leagues, but you're in more than one should you

      A) play your game, ignore opposition teams and have faith you'll score more.
      B) build your team (as best you can) to beat asany of your current weeks opponents and hope you do beat the rest.

Plus if h2h is only importance waiting for a dgw to use chips counter productive or not?

      Questions for Granville:

-Does he fear not owning Silva and/or Hazard?
-Why is he still keeping faith with Depay?
-Is having two budget strikers really viable? In Granny's case he now owns both Gestede and Wilson.

With price rises very slow this break week, what should those on a WC do?
      1. Get all the form players in even with 5.0 ITB, which allows for jumping on any big hitter who revives his season and also could provide 3-4 rises in TV immediately.
      2. Keep Sanchez/Pedro to save a transfer down the line.

How wise is it to waste a FT? In my case, I have 2 and don't have any pressing transfers. However, I am thinking of dropping Benteke for 1 game to avoid a probable price drop and get Gomis/Wilson to catch a probable price rise as well. My rationale is Benteke has a tough away game and Coutinho not available compounds the problem whereas Gomis/Wilson have the form and the fixture. Will the plan backfire?

      Hi Jonty,

There has been a little discussion about the AOA chip this week (best timing, is it useful at all). Would be interesting to hear thoughts on this chip in particular. Has anyone used one, any ideas, etc etc.?

I'd also like to hear more discussion around 'wasting a transfer' which was a question from your good self this week.

      Cheers,

      Mattski

And what do the scouts think about the idea of saving the AOA chip till GW38 as Ryan suggests, given that there were 7 clean sheets in GW38 last season?

Is it too late to jump on the Gomis train? I have Diouf as my 2nd and am inclined to keep him for form and fixtures and differential status. And is this the week that Aguero finally comes good?

Out of all the deadline day transfers which players have attracted your attention the most as an FPL asset? and why?

Here to highlight some of the players; Martial, Borini, Murray, Lennnon, Van Dijk, Antonio, Yedlin, Mori, Mbokani, Moses, Evans, Toivonen, De Bruyne, Song, Son, Lindegaard ...etc.

We've seen some European EPL newcomers start hot--Payet, Ayew, Lens, Pedro. How likely is it that one or more of them maintain their form over the course of the season? Do you expect the famed rigor of the EPL will wear them down?

We can clearly see Costa is the best Chelsea option, and Hazard isn't at his best. On the other hand,City's midfield could be market of points. Is Aguero>Costa a good move? Or am I just overthinking this?

If you couldn't have Aguero, which 3 Man City players would you put in your squad?

Is Aguero still essential anyway? He's rather expensive, hasn't had many returns in the Premier League so far, and there are a lot of other tempting options from City (Silva, Yaya, Sterling, De Bruyne, Kolarov, Kompany, Sagna and Hart).

Those odds give no indication of the propensity to score multiple goals within the same game, let alone three, so there is no way you can infer your conclusion from that data.

Sakho could have a better chance of getting on the scoresheet than Pedro, for example, but based on historical performance, or indeed his own team's likelihood of scoring 3 or more goals, Pedro could be more likely to score a hat trick.

Disclaimer: I picked the above players not based purely to as an indication, not based on any statistical analysis.

I agree. For that you need to know how many goals are expected in the game and for each team.
The Diouf comment is based on his chance of scoring a hat-trick (300/1). Pedro is more like 100/1 and Sakho no bigger than 60/1.

      ''unable to oust Mangala''.

That's misinformation. Otamendi was not even eligible to make the bench in the previous game. Better defender than Managala, and unless he has to fill in at RB because of Sagna injury, should comfortably start ahead of Mangala at CB any given day.

Would do wonders for Mangala's confidence if he gets dropped. We all saw last season what happens if he's jittery.

I think I'm ready to finalise my WC now. I'd love your thoughts!

      Krul // Eliot
      Kolarov // Evans // Naughton // Ward // Cook
      Sanchez // Sterling // Ayew // Mahrez // Westwood
      Aguero // Costa // Wilson

Any changes you'd recommend? Is it too light at the back? Cheers!

At 11 mil waiting can hurt. Unlikely captain choice so why not cheaper options? allows more money for defenders.

DG sums up the thought process - basically that he is easy to get rid of if he doesn't fire, but hard to get in if he does. Rolling the dice to get ahead of the curve, so to speak. I understand it's a gamble tho!

You get 5+ free games to play. all of which are solid.

If you buy 3 or so EA games a year, which I do, the 10% off means that the subsciption pays for itself.

What do you guys think is the best long term option between these two?

      A - Cazorla and Benteke
      B - Sanchez and Defoe

Really considering picking up Santi as he has dropped to 8.3. Think he could be somewhat of a bargain for that price, considering his set piece duties.

After 4 game weeks, it is clear that a 3-5-2 will bring more points at the end of the season than a 3-4-3 ... with 2 cheap mids options like mahrez/sako/redmond/albrighton/barkley to fit alongside a 4.5m keeper, kolarov, 2 mid priced def, pedro, silva, sanchez, aguero and wilson,,, we are sure to have a very solid team bringing more points than a 3-4-3 .. we have seen that last year also, mids tend to bring greater pts .. and with no other option like last year's kane value at 5.5, i reckon that a 3-5-2 is the option to adopt .. what are your views ???

p.s : [wilson is like austin's last year value but i don't see any striker bring last year's kane value]

Season before last, premium defenders were the winners after four weeks because of a highly anomalous number of clean sheets plus the new bonus points system. 5-3-2 was actually viable for about 6 weeks.

Then it all changed and premium strikers were suddenly the key. The mids had barely performed and the winning strategy was to get three premium strikers (Aguero, Suarez and Rooney, I think), funded by cheap mids like Januzaj. That lasted for another month before Rooney hit the skids and Aguero got crocked.

Things change quickly in this game.

Who to bench from this 8?

Sanchez (STK)- Toure (cry) - Pedro (eve) - Mahrez (AVL) - Ayew (wat)

Aguero (cry) - Gomis (wat) - Wilson (nor)

Im thinking between Wilson + Gomis myself

Toure probably. Wilson and Gomis have form and a decent fixture. I know MCI are on form also but who knows how Toure will perform in regards to attacking returns with KDB etc there.

That's a good point. It be good research to know how KDB will factor into the eleven. But if your unsure I probably go without Wilson. Defense wise I would leave out cedric or gomez

Why though Norwich still yet to keep a cs and don't look like they will anytime soon either?

thanks, im still leaning towards wilson away to norwich but also thinking can gomis make it 5 in 5, surely he's due a blank, but toure an option. Defense im going with cedric over gomez (away to man u)

thanks, interesting shout. I feel toure always has that potential to pop up with a goal anytime but I guess on form and with so many other attcking options in front of him now maybe he will be limited somewhat

So 413 price falls and 63 rises so far this season according to FPL Price Changes on Twitter.

Lots of us have lost a lot on team value, and it's much harder to make money. With the addition of the stupid chips, FPL have really gone too far in making this game accessible to the casual players this season.

How does this make the game more accessible to the so called "casuals". Even though I don't get your logic, I salute it if it is so, more competition = more fun!

The logic is quite simple - if someone wants a popular player at Christmas he isn't going to be so far out of their price range that they have to settle for someone else it seems.

If you're a casual and you don't monitor price rises and drops you're not going to be priced out of the market as early as you might have been other seasons. Massive difference to seasons past.

The chips on the other hand ensure again that if someone is 200 points behind at Christmas because they have missed deadlines or just didn't care for a long time, they can catch up. Now there's nothing wrong with this per se, but I don't like the addition of these new chips anyway, and with a more favourable price market.

See my response with regards to the market below.

The chips do add an additional element of luck to the game, as you can never be certain when a captains will score extremely heavy. However, surely the more committed players who read this site

... should in general be able to use the chips more effectively, e.g. in a double Gameweek or on a more reliable captain.

Despite not being a massive fan of the chips I see them as an additional opportunity to make gains, not as a thorn in my side.

Yeah, it's much more fun beating people who don't take the game seriously.

By the nature of the game there will always be many more price falls than rises. Do you have equivalent stats for last season? I would say that this is a normal pattern and not at all new for this season.

I disagree, it's harder to make money but it's also easier to lose money.

Therefore managers paying more attention to the game will still have a financial advantage as their team value should, in general, not decrease as much.

I should also point out that, as I mentioned in my article above, broadly speaking this was the case last year as well.

The ratio of price rises to falls is only slightly lower at this stage of the season and may well regress.

Any thoughts appreciated people. Bit worried about the huge reliance on Swansea & City - any recommended changes?
        1FT and £1.3 ITB

        Butland (McCarthy)
Kolarov / Darmian / Williams (Morgan / Gomez)
Sanchez / Silva / Ayew / Mahrez (Surman)
        Kun / Diouf / Gomis

        Cheers

The huge reliance on City is definitely not a problem, 3 players is a necessity if anything (especially with their fixtures.)
Perhaps save and then upgrade to try and fit in a Liverpool player, their upcoming fixtures aren't too shabby.

Aye, not worried about City so much, and to be honest I'm happy with my Swansea players. Just 6 from two teams feels a bit much with so many other options out there...

              May well hold on it.

If you really have such worries I would be looking to replace willaims. I don't think Swansea attacking is much of a problem, though I can see the defence deteorating in the future. Though not replacing them seems to be fine as well

                      What do you reckon, Doos?

I'm not actually keen to get rid of any of my Swansea 3. Surman needs upgrading, and I've concerns about Gomez long term but he's fine for now...

Williams is, and will be, the best 5.0 defender in the game.
