An extraordinary death threat ode to Granville provided the inspiration and backdrop for this week’s Scoutcast.

My co-host wasn’t sure whether to feel flattered or mildly panicked by a community post like no other.

Recovering from the menacing tribute, Granville joined forces with Jonty and myself to assess the merits of the deadline day arrivals, before grappling with another round of community questions.

We rinse through the De Bruyne debate, the heavy-hitter slump, briefly consider buying Jonny Evans, before tentatively giving out dating advice – again inspired by the imaginations of you, the community.

            I have McCarthy as well and have my fingers crossed he'll retain his spot. If he does, I'm bringing in Krul to partner with him. If he doesn't, I'll likely upgrade to Begovich if Courtois is out for two months.

      The thing about Begovic that might put me off is that i will have to swap him out again at some stage but you would imagine Chelsea will get more clean sheets over time

      I think i might get Krul but if Courtois is out for a long time i might have to rethink that

      Having both would be nice Begovic bandwagon imminent when this Courtois news sinks in might be climbing on just for the price rise

        But really, we're only 4 weeks into the year.
        To put it in perspective, I had a terrible run in the middle of last year, dropping from 2k to 30k. If those bad weeks had happened at the beginning of the year, my rank would be worse than it is now, undoubtedly. We're just getting our bad luck out of the way early.

        I won't be bringing any of them in this week, no. My transfer was used to get rid of that overrated Dutch youngster in United's midfield! I seriously wouldn't be surprised if Cisse gets a brace this week, his PP90min is excellent, all he needs is pitch time.

            I'm not sure Diva. Cisse is a very good short-term pick imo but he'd probably need replacing within 3-4 weeks, unless he does enough to keep Mitrovic on the bench once he returns. If it was for this week only I'd say go for it, but it really depends on if you think its worth the risk.

        I haven't seen Monreal in any teams on FFS but the reality is he's a great defender to play pretty much every week. He's clearly first choice after performing so well last season, but I'm not sure if CL rotation will affect him...

      One question on the baseline BPS, however: why not strip out red/yellow cards from the calculations in the same way that attacking returns are?

        That's definitely something I've considered, but there are quite a few defenders who are card magnets and some who rarely get booked so I thought that fact would get ignored if I stripped them out too. Terry for example only received 2 yellow cards last season whereas many defenders received 7+. They have quite a big effect on the BPS as one yellow card deducts 4 BPS points from the defenders score (-3 for YC and -1 for the foul). If more people think I should strip card BPS out too then I'm fine with that and will do that next time 🙂

          I agree that it has a big impact. But I'd say that cards are just like attacking returns in that they are not entirely predictable, but skew the BPS quite a bit. You might want to look at the baseline BPS, but decide that one player's potential for attacking returns are worth the investment despite lower "baseline" BPS.
          In the same way, I'd like to look at the baseline BPS, and if two players have similar numbers, then maybe choose the one less prone to cards. But that is hard to do if the cards are already baked into the baseline BPS number.

          I don't mean to sound unappreciative with my nit-picking. This is a great effort in any case.

    So the Ward injury news is as big as it comes (4 weeks based on most reports). According to FPL, he's expected to return on 10 Oct - however we know that most players return earlier than expected in FPL so that'll be just in time for the plum GW8 - 14 fixtures, where CPL will play 5 home games out of 7. So do City.

    I know most of us are already with 3 City (albeit with much confuse on which City players to triple up), so which CPL players do you think worth considering given their potential to explode?

    For me, it's Dann (if no Ward), Puncheon and probably Sako. Cabaye will alawys be tempting though.

        Yeah, playing fixtures does not look like the way to go these days, I mean this season. But then we're talking about 5 home games out of 7 here, and CS is definitely something that favours the home team. and the likes of NEW and SOT also have very good set of fixtures ahead, GW9-14 and GW11-18 respectively.

        Imagine if you could use your WC in GW9... 😉

        Bolasie is THAT explosive, but with no guaranteed pitch time, it'l be hard to put faith on him. If he's first choice like you said, then it's a different story. McCarthy is an interesting pick, good player but not translated in FPL.

        I think the fact that the pronunciation of the written language is so different from English is what is so striking. Welsh might has well be Chinese.

    Sold Hazard for Pedro.. Decided to be a bit less patient with my players cause i have a history of being TOO patient (4 weeks with 2 easyish home games included seems like a fair chance for Hazard) .
    Pretty sure They'll start a natural LB ie Baba Rahman this week which will help Hazard and spark a return in form for him..
    Could be a stupid decision but i can now afford a City mid for Chadli next week and i'm pretty sure Pedro is gonna be a 200 point player..

    OK, some possibly meaningless form based analysis...

    I had a look at each team's next 6 fixtures, taking into account average goals for and against, and the average goals for and against of their opposition. This gave me a defensive and offensive factor for each team.

    Unsurprisingly, Man City leads the defensive rankings, with ManU second and Liverpool third.

    Interestingly, West Ham rank first for offence over the next 6, with Man City second and Leicester third...

    Note that this takes into account only goals for and against so far, and does not take into account injuries (for example) or potential under/over performance so far (Chelsea have conceded 9 goals)

    I was thinking of dumping Payet, but will hold for now...
