Having assessed the latest movements among the Goalkeepers and Defenders and Midfielders on our Watchlist, which offers player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks, our focus today turns to the forwards. With two plum fixtures over the next two Gameweeks, Christian Benteke moves up a couple of places in our latest update, but having only produced attacking points in one of his five appearances this season, Diego Costa continues to see his stock fall.

While Sergio Aguero again frustrated his owners last week, the strength of Manchester City’s upcoming schedule (WHM, tot, NEW, BOU, mun, NOR) means he keeps his place on top of our ladder. The 13.2-priced forward played seven minutes as a substitute against Juventus following the knee injury he suffered against Crystal Palace, and with Manuel Pellegrini confirming his star striker is 100% fit” ahead of the home clash against West Ham, and is once again top of this week’s Captain Poll, with 29% of the vote.

Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis keeps his place in our rankings with the Welsh side facing four home matches (EVE, sot, TOT, STO, avl, ARS) over the next six Gameweeks. While Garry Monk’s men face some difficult opposition, the fact that the France international, available at 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), has already scored against Chelsea and Man United means he has to be backed to add to his four-goal tally.

After bagging his second strike of the season against Man United last week, and with very favourable home clashes (NOR, AVL) over the next two Gameweeks, Christian Benteke looks a great short-term option. His prospects should also be boosted by the return of Reds playmaker Philippe Coutinho, although with the schedule turning much tougher from Gameweek 8 onwards (eve, tot, SOT, che), the 8.5-valued forward really needs to produce the goods over the next two weeks.

Despite blanking at Norwich last weekend, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson keeps his spot towards the top of our ladder. The 5.9-rated forward has, slightly worryingly, only managed three goal attempts over his last two outings, with the long-term injury suffered to Max Gradel perhaps leaving Eddie Howe’s side slightly short of creativity. Nonetheless, with the fixtures (SUN, sto, WAT) still favourable in the short-term, he still remains the primary budget option for the time being.

Hot on the heels of the Bournemouth man, however, is Leicester’s Jamie Vardy. The England international, who sets us back 6.2 in FPL, only has an ownership of 8.5%, compared to 26.3% for Wilson, and has only registered five less points over the first five Gameweeks. The pacey attacker has a fairly reasonable set of fixtures (sto, ARS, nor, sot, CPL, wba) coming up, although the Foxes do only face two matches in front of their own fans.

With such favourable fixtures (LEI, BOU, avl, swa, WAT, new) on the horizon, Mame Biram Diouf keeps his spot around halfway up our ladder. Given that Stoke are tied with Sunderland as the second worst team in terms of shots from inside the box (24), there are concerns over the Potters’ goal scoring potential, while the Senegal international also started wide on the right against Arsenal last week. Diouf (priced at 6.6) is expected to return to the lone striker role this time around, and having scored twice already this season, should be at the forefront of the Stoke attack.

The side with the most favourable upcoming fixtures (avl, EVE, cpl, SUN, nor, LEI) according to our Season Ticker is West Brom, so with that in mind, Salomon Rondon remains firmly in our thoughts. The Baggies, like Stoke, have only scored three times so far this season, though, which does limit the appeal of their attacking options, particularly with Rondon setting us back 7.0 in FPL. With an ownership of just 1.0%, he could certainly be worth a punt as a differential given the strength of the upcoming schedule.

While he has managed a goal and an assist so far this season, there is a feeling that Diafra Sakho has not quite provided the attacking points expected from him at the start of the season. The 6.5-valued forward has been outshone by his team-mate Dimitri Payet, and with the fit-again Andy Carroll and Nikica Jelavic also available to Slaven Bilic up front, the former Marseille midfielder looks the stronger option right now. There’s no doubt the fixtures (NOR, sun, cpl, CHE, wat) after this weekend’s trip to the Etihad are favourable for the Senegal international.

The big faller this week is Chelsea’s Diego Costa, who has only managed to register eight shots from inside the box this season. His 12.6% ownership in FPL will hope his crisp finish against Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the Champions League will have boosted his confidence, but with a mixed fixture list (ARS, new, SOT, AVL, whm, LIV) over the coming weeks, it may be difficult for the 11.1-rated forward to live up to his hefty price tag unless Jose Mourinho’s side can quickly find their form.

With Everton continuing to surprise against tougher opposition, we’ve inserted Romelu Lukaku (8.2) near the bottom of our rankings. The Belgian international still faces a difficult stretch (swa, wba, LIV, MUN, ars, SUN) of fixtures but with confidence high at Goodison Park, he could well add to the two goals and assist he’s already registered this season.

After picking up his second assist of the season against Swansea, and with penalty duties in the locker, we’re still just favouring Troy Deeney over his team-mate Odion Ighalo as our preferred Watford forward option. The Hornets have a pretty favourable run of fixtures (new, CPL, bou, ARS, sto, WHM) on the horizon, so the 5.3-valued Deeney should get off the mark sooner rather than later, and as the club captain, looks slightly more nailed on than Ighalo, with Victor Ibarbo and Mamadou Oulare likely to be competing for the forward positions over the next few weeks.

Graziano Pelle leads all forwards for shots inside the box (20), and with Southampton facing four home match-ups (MUN, SWA, che, LEI, liv, BOU) over the coming period, the 7.9-rated Italian still looks a decent option for our three-man frontlines. The former Feyenoord striker has amassed a decent 19 points so far this season, and while he’s up against some strong defences over the next month or so, the fact he’s at the heart of all of the Saints’ attacks does make him an appealing option.

Transfer done, Shaw>Nyom. Gambling on Pedro, with Westwood first sub, and Nyom second if Gomez gets dropped...Mahrez (c) after weeks of playing safe. Leaves 2 FT's next week 🙂

    Myhill
    Kolarov Francis Gomez
    Sanchez Pedro Yaya Mahrez(c)

When to play the bench boost?

We’ve already had lots of theories as to the perfect time. Double game weeks when your big hitters have good fixtures, when your front 8 are at home with apparent opportunities to cut loose.

But should the perfect time to use it not be when your look at your back seven, and think they have the best chance of all keeping a clean sheet? After all, that is where 3 of your subs will normally come from. Defenders from littler teams, which you will need to profit from a DGW bench boost rarely keep two clean sheets in quick succession and you’ll be playing your big guns anyway.

I find myself with a curious team this week where I have a back seven of

Butland, Myhill, Dawson, Richards, Kolarov, Darmian, Skertel

Now it’s unlikely that I’m going to get five clean sheets from the matches those players are involved in, but there’s a decent chance. Villa and West Brom could easily be nil nil, United aren’t conceding many and Saints aren’t scoring many. City are at home and yet to concede all season, Stoke are due a clean sheet and even if they don’t get one, Butland is likely to get save points from the trigger happy foxes. And then there’s skertel, a goal threat, at home to one of the lesser teams in the division.

My front 8 is ozil, depay, coutinho, payet, mahrez, aguero, wilson and gomis and right now I’m benching payet, ozil, butland and richards… but should I be using my bench boost instead? Are we looking at it as an offensive chip, when really it should be seen as a defensive one…

Play it on DGW. Better team value, better players, better bench, more games, more points.

This. Bench boost will give you amazing transfer flexibility for DGWs, which are extremely important towards the end of the season.

Sorry can you just elaborate why bench boost is a good chip for DGW?

I assume we won't have more than 11 DGWers anyway without destroying our team.

Genuinely curious not a dig haha

Because it means you can load up on any DGWers you want, in any position, in any price range, and not have to bench your SGWers who might have good value too.

Imagine being able to get a couple of cheap defs with good fixtures (like Hull DGW last season), play 5 at the back, and not have to bench someone like Benteke or Ayew who might be on SGW but with a plum fixture. Unbelievable flexibility on really important weeks.

It means you need less planning because you can just shove any DGWers in there and it doesn't matter whos gonna be getting benched

why are you getting a better bench though? DGW, unless more than six teams involved, are going to get attacks against defensives and thus cancelling them out? you're literally taking points off your own players and paying a chip for the privellege.

plus the smaller teams, villa, west brom, norwich etc are ALWAYS going to be against at least one big hitter on a DGW. I'd rather have west brom at home once, they say city and swansea away combined...

No it doesn't. The triple captain, played well, will massively outstrip it.

It is a lot more of a gamble though - I can forsee one giant triple captain fail in a DGW this season.

agreed the bench boost is a "safer chip" - not nobody is really addressing my main point

which is do people agree that a bench boost should be played when you think you have the best chance to get seven clean sheets

surely nobody believes they are going to get 14 clean sheets in a DGW, or even 10 for that matter. the fixtures are always worse in them for the smaller teams, of which people will have at least three or four of their back seven from.

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 6 months ago

Disagree. I think you'd be very happy with a 20 point captain in a DGW. Theoretically, you could have a clean sheet and save points from a DGW keeper (10 points), same from a DGW defender bench fodder (10 points) and you still have two subs to work in

Not necessarily - last years DGW's proved that you could have bench fodder that had excellent DGW points - Harper, McShane etc.

          10 years, 6 months ago

And even if you don't have 30 and you have only 10 DGWs - you will have 25 - which is still an incredible amount of players to have playing in one GW

it's a decent argument obviously, I can just forsee people doubling up on norwich and cherries defenders in double game weeks and watching them get 2 points each over both matches...

Guys i am struggling in a private league having 180 pts staying "comfortably" in the last position 90 pts behind the leader. Here is my squad:

    Butland(McCarthy)
    Kompany, Darmian, Gomez(Targett, Ward)
    Sanchez, Haz, Mahrez, Ayew(Westwood)
    Gomis, Wilson, Aguero

So i am considering taking a hit after Kompany's injury. The other player i am considering to take out is Sanchez who's in awful form fantasywise since the start of the season. Any suggestions? I have 1.1 ITB.

I know that Sanchez is the player with most shots from inside the box since the beginning of the season(22 the next player has 13) but still he couldn't manage to score goals yet and his price is massive. I was actually going to play Gomez, Targett, Kompany so Targett was already in the starting line up, so i should play Darmian i guess. What does FT stands for? If its first transfer i didn't.

With a defence of Shaw, Richards, Kolarov, Targett and Gomez, would you consider using AOA if it meant a front 8 of

    Coutinho, mahrez, Sanchez, yaya, ayew
    Wilson, Gomis, Aguero

He's had one truly favourable game at home this season.

1 goal and 3 bonus points.

He's rested, on penalties, incredibly talented and Livepool really need to win these 2 games. Also, you can be pretty confident he will be heavily involved in any goals they score

    The captaincy dilema.

Like many of you this week I'm torn on who to give the armband. I've got a few good candidates in the squad and so I thought I'd give my take on each....

    a) Aguero (WHU)
Likely to be this week's most captained player due to City's start of the season and the fact that the Hammers have been struggling to keep clean-sheets. Dispite underlying positive stats, Kun has yet to net and is coming back off the slight knock. History teaches us that he rarely comes back from injury firing on all cylinders, although admittedly that's usually from a longer break on sideline. Given that City have such attacking options, perhaps it'll be another quiet week for Aguero?

    b.) Silva (WHU)
An alternative to Aguero could well be David Silva. Even though himself coming back from a slight injury, he seems to be the puppet master in the City midfield and one would think that if there are to be goal... which, let's be honest, there will be.... Silva is likely to be involved in some way.

    c.) Wilson (SUN)
Even though his form may be cooling, Wilson is the spearhead of a very attacking Bournemouth who face the woeful Black Cats defence. Being the focal point of the attack could easily make this week another positive one for Wilson.

    d.) Mahrez (stk)
The in form man. Mahrez has been bucking the trend of those lower priced mid fielders who 'show their value' in some games. He's been going from strength to strength and only looked off the pace in one game when he picked up a knock. All that leans towards positive returns. The downside is that Leicester and Mahrez himself have been far less active away from home. On top of that a visit to Stoke is not for the faint hearted.

Personally, I think I'm leaning towards either Silva or Wilson but who's getting your armband this week?

Earlier in the week I was more torn between Mahrez and Wilson. But it's Leicester's away stats that make me think that this week may be a quieter one.

I have the almost same dilemma. Having Kun, Mahrez, Wilson and Gomis. From those 4 i think Wilson is the best bet as i believe West Ham are capable of getting something at Etihad.

      1. sheixt
        • 10 Years

I have Gomis as well, but so that the post wasn't any more of an essay I thought I would leave him out... the fact that EVE are so unpredictable I'm leaning away from him.

At the moment Wilson has the armband... but that means very little as I've changed it every day this week....!

I have the same dilemma I'm leaing towards Wilson (fixture) or Mahrez (form). After continuous Kun fails, I'm happy to wait for him to return to form.

I don't understand why any manager would risk a player with a hamstring issue, I'd rather play a worse player who can run and let the better player fully recover.
