There were no new victims over the weekend, and no red cards either, but the Suspension Tightrope sleeps for no man, and, after a flurry of cards, it duly snapped up a glut of unwilling funambulists to head into Gameweek 8.

Villa’s Ciaran Clark, Sunderland centre-half Seb Coates and Leicester left-back Jeffrey Schlupp all survived the week unscathed, though the former pair’s causes were helped by the fact they were both unused subs for respective clashes with Liverpool and Man United.

That trio were joined by four new protagonists, who all picked up their fourth cautions of the season in the Gameweek 7 match ups.

The first couple were served up in an action-packed lunchtime clash at White Hart Lane, as Spurs overcame table toppers City with an energetic display that saw five of their front six players booked once they took the lead in the second-half. Goalscorer Eric Dier and his centre midfield partner Dele Alli took their tallies to four for the season for fouls on Fernandinho and Patrick Roberts respectively. Dier has already been drafted in by over 42,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers since the weekend, making him the fourth more sought-after player of the Gameweek.

Next to don the soft shoes and prepare for an acrobatic stint was Sunderland’s Billy Jones. The right-back is no stranger to these parts, with eight bookings in two of the last three seasons, and at least four cards in all of the last five years, despite his failure to secure a regular role at West Brom or Sunderland in that time. Jones scythed down Memphis Depay to earn himself a first taste of the ’15/16 Tightrope.

Finally, the seventh of the current crop of Tightrope walkers – and perhaps one of the most familiar faces of recent times – was Newcastle’s Jack Colback. The combative midfielder joined the party after a first-half booking picked up for a foul on Loic Remy. Fortunately for Jack, injury interrupted his second-half, so he’ll have to wait until at least next week to see if he can add to his growing collection of cards.

True fans of the Tightrope will be more than aware of Colback’s “previous”. Nurtured under the wing of Lee Cattermole at Sunderland, the ginger-haired battler learned quickly from his mentor, picking up a single card in his debut season, upgrading that to three bookings the next term, then five in ’12/13 and seven in his final season with Cattermole on Wearside. A switch to neighbours Newcastle saw Colback blossom into a full-scale disciplinary menace and, in ’14/15, he duly upped his output to 12 cautions – a total bettered only by former team-mate Cattermole (14) last time out. Four cards in just under 650 minutes this season is no surprise, and puts him high on the list of those expected to fall into a ban in his next outing.

Below those players, there are 16 faces currently sitting on three yellows. Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Fonte, Oriol Romeu, Jonjo Shelvey, Yohan Cabaye and Erik Lamela are the new names, having collected a third caution of the campaign over the last two days.

There are no newly-suspended players so far this week, with only tomorrow’s Hawthorns clash between West Brom and Everton remaining.

Arsenal’s Gabriel is available for selection again, having served a one-match ban in yesterday’s 5-2 win at Leicester. Three players still remain suspended for Gameweek 8. Diego Costa, Kevin Mirallas and Valon Behrami all serve the last of three-bans against Southampton, Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively.

I think it's alright, but one of Fabianski or McCarthy needs to go in my opinion. Targett also need a replacement.

Your forwards are good enough, and you should hold them for now. Depay is a tough one, Payet might be a better option. The rest looks fine!

Depends a lot if you can WC in the week before and still have a decent team left after DGW. It's rare that you'll have more than 11 DGers without a WC before and bench boost is better if your bench are DGers too.

Half football, half political post here.

Last year, Catalonia held an independence referendum which Spain refused to acknowledge. They voted Yes to indepenece (80%).

Today they have elected a pro-independence government to their devolved parliament. This government now plans to declare Catalonia an independent country.

Spain plans to block it, but given Catalonia clearly has a mandate to declare independence now and United Nations charters state a country has the right to declare independence when its people desire it, chances are, Spain has no chance of legally blocking it.

To the football bit ..... What will become of El Classico? What happens to Catalan football? Do Barca beat Espanol over and over now?

(Good luck to the Catalan people. As a Scot who voted Yes last year, I really hope they can inspire my nation to grow a pair in the not too distant future)

An issue will be pressure from other nations. There are regions all over Europe that want to split from a bigger nation, so if Catalonia do manage to attain independence, they face a big issue regarding trade and acknowledgement from other international powers. Its a toughie.

As for La Liga, I don't really know what happens. One would imagine the likes of Barca and Espanol will remain the same as ever, but it will be interesting from an international team perspective.

If the big nations of the EU lie down and let them in no problem then they're inviting all the smaller groups who want to secede to do so. I'm not saying I agree with it, but there'll be a lot of political games over this in the coming months should they start to really push for independence.

As a Scot you should stop playing the English fpl game and play the scots fpl. Oh that's right it full of lower league English players. 😉 I think it would be just like the Welsh clubs playing in the English leagues. They would never let Barca go out of la liga. That would be financial suicide.

This managing of a junior football team (U15's) is a real eye opener.

I find it hard to believe how many fat necked middle aged bullies are masquerading as coaches and managers...it's almost abuse at times.

For the first time today I had a "few words" with the opposite manager for going off on one at the linesman.....he was totally off his head.

I'm not sure I want any part of this nonsense anymore.

        Exactly.

Two nice sets of lads today playing footy on a Sunday morning...except one thick headed manager decides it's the world cup and starts throwing insults at everybody and everything.

        It's rubbish really.

Yeah. We have a good team too that's the best about it.

Hopefully it'll calm down when we get started on Wednesday.

There's arseholes everywhere though Wakey but as long as the good times out weigh the bad or your making a positive difference to your team then keep at it and don't let one tube put you off.

Funny you should mention it. My brother, a Dublin GAA goalkeeper, has just been bullied out of his football club by a manager. They now have no goalie for the season. The same club produced some of Ireland's best players back in the day, but aren't so relevant in the current climate. Still, you'd swear they were royalty.

Disgraceful really. Had the same happen to me a couple of years ago, having being told the way I scored goals "isn't how we play" and was subsequently benched for the manager's son.

It's a disgrace. I'm all grown up, I can accept bullies, but it is turning so many young lads off the game. At a time when Irish football is on its knees, and the UK is less of a powerhouse than it once was.
