This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero (53%) reclaims the top spot in our Captain Poll ahead of Manchester City’s home tie against Newcastle United. Although the 13.2-priced forward has recorded five successive league blanks, his owners will be hoping he can kick on after scoring a midweek Champions League winner against Wolfsburg.

The favourable nature of the Sky Blues’ match-up finds Kevin De Bruyne – who’s netted in three of his four starts since arriving from Wolfsburg – sitting in silver-medal position with 10% of the votes. Fit-again David Silva (2%) also makes an appearance, given that the Magpies have conceded twice in five of the first seven Gameweeks.

Dimitri Payet lies in third place for the second successive Gameweek, with 7% of voters liking the Frenchman’s chances away to Sunderland, bearing in mind that the Wearsiders have conceded more goals (16) than any team so far. Payet has delivered attacking returns in all but two of his starts this campaign, underlining the consistency of his output. Diafra Sakho is backed by only 1% of the voters despite notching in three of the four Gameweeks, including strikes on the road against Liverpool and City.

Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy are both backed by 4% of voters as Leicester prepare to lock horns with Norwich at Carrow Road. The former has served up five double-figure hauls already, while the latter netted five goals in his previous four outings. The Canaries have yet to register a single clean sheet in the first seven Gameweeks.

Despite bagging a hat-trick last time out against Leicester, Alexis Sanchez scooped just 3% of the votes as Arsenal entertain a United side that’s conceded just five goals this term.

Notching a brace against Aston Villa in just his second league start since vacating the treatment room, Daniel Sturridge has encouraged 1% of to hand him the armband for the Merseyside derby, given that hosts Everton have yet to record a home clean sheet.

Anthony Martial (1%) – who sat atop the summit last Gameweek – plummets down the rankings by virtue of the Red Devils’ much more challenging match-up. The Gunners have conceded just two goals in their home clashes this term, yet the former Monaco frontman looks in fine fettle and has produced points in all three of his appearances so far.

You know Wilson is injured don't you? You have 1 free transfer, that's clearly what you need to sort out.

Replacement options in your price range are Vardy/Berahino/Gestede/Mitrovic...

I can't convince myself to play Redmond over Mahrez-seems odd but 5 points per home game(R) vs 7 points per away game(M) over the season so far means Mahrez takes it.

I suppose I could drop Pedro...

He had a clean sheet the week prior to last, no (and on my bench). I think Swansea are tougher at home, as are most. I'd say he has as good a shot as any, and you that if he gets one, he tends to get 2-3 BAPS, too.

I really want to do Yaya -> KDB for the long term, but then I have to free up 0.9 in cash.

If it was me I would downgrade Darmian instead of Vardy to free up funds. Its a bit risky doing it before the international break though but having KDB v newcastle could be worth it

That would mean -8, cause I'm at 0 FT this week...
Would you still get KDB this week?

If yes, who would you change Darmian for? Has to be a defender worth max 4.9.

Play someone else or make a -4 point hit

    Aguero – Sakho – Vardy

I am in a similar position mate. Although, Anya is a tastier prospect than Westwood for me and you have a better bench. I'd probably hold with your squad.

With Yaya confirmed out is it worth taking a hit? Baring in mind, Westwood could step in and get me a possible 2 points at least.

Whoever I got in would need to get over 6 points to be worth it.

    9.5m to spend

    Butland

    Darmian - Francis - Kolorov

    Hazard - Westwood - Mahrez - Coutinho

    Aguero (c) - Martial - Sakho

Subs: Gomez - Yaya - Staylor

Good fixture for Westwood, probably not worth it if you like Toure long term,

Mata, although he could easily get just 2 points (Ars - Mun could be a boring 0-0).

How about Payet? Could easily nick over 6 points against sunderland

Maybe Payet? I probably wouldn't for a hit though

    Current team:

    Butland - McCarthy
    Kompany - Darmian - Bellerin - Richards - Gomez
    Sanchez - Silva - Payet - Mahrez - Hoolahan
    Aguero - Martial - Ighalo

Need to sort out my defenders, want rid of Gomez but I'd rather not play both Darmian and Bellerin this weekend. Fplfix suggests Kompany to Kolarov, which seems like a good idea to at least preserve team value and hopefully get some points!

Is there anything else you'd change with this team?

    Thanks in advance.

Front 8 looks fine. Getting Kolarov makes sense. How many FT and ITB?

    a) Yaya -> KDB (-4)
    or
    b) Play Redmond home to Leicester and keep Yaya?

There's not much point in having Redmond in your squad at his price, imo, if you're not going to play him against Leicester at home, so I'd say B.

Play Ruddy (LEI) or Butland (avl)?

Advice needed on the Toure situation:

    Myhill (Butland)
    Koalrov, Bellerin, B.Davies (Richards, Williams)
    YTT, Sanchez, Mahrez, Payet (Anya)
    Aguero, Martial, Vardy

    0 FT, 1,7 ITB

A: YTT > KDB (-4) (hesitant to triple up on City. Is KDB going to bring in the points playing wide)
B: YTT > Mata (-4) (Terrible upcoming fixtures)
C Save the hit and play Richards or Williams

If I do C, I would probably make B before Sunday anyway to avoid price rises/falls.

YTT looks safe from the drop tonight, so C and play Richards

The fixtures are turning. Two big games at home he could thrive on then finally the 'easier' games from week 11.

welcome to the world of Lukaku

weeks of blanks followed by an explosion

it's why he's a troll as the chances are you'll ditch him after 3-4 weeks of blanks and the week you do he'll explode

Silva, Aguero or Mahrez captain? Captaining Aguero is great and all but when over 50% are doing it surely you need some sort of differential?

    1. Farcelona

      50% aren't captaining him though.

My point was there would still be another 50% of people who do not have him as their captain.

Captain whoever you think will get the most points.

...but if he scores a hatrick and your differential blanks, then those 50% will be waving at you into the sunset.

Only 31,4% own him and not all who have him will captain him (probably more than 50% though). Great differential

Risky. The closer he get to 50% the more I would be inclined to captain him, if he does explode you would lose out big time to almost half the field.
