This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

In the wake of Sergio Aguero’s projected four-week absence, Kevin De Bruyne – who converted two free-kicks for Belgium during the international break – sits atop the summit of our Captain Poll with 26% of the vote. The former Wolfsburg midfielder boasts three goals and two assists in his last trio of league starts and will fancy his chances at home to a Bournemouth outfit that’s notched just one clean sheet this campaign.

Alexis Sanchez (20%) is the second most popular captaincy choice. Although he travelled back from Peru on Thursday and has a crucial Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich in midweek, Sanchez is hard to ignore by virtue of his nine goals in five outings for club and country.

Graziano Pelle (15%) ranks top for total points (54) among all forwards this campaign ahead of Southampton’s home tie against Leicester. The aerially dominant frontman notched three goals and four assists in his previous three league starts and scored in his last outing for Italy. Sadio Mane (1%) joins him in the top ten, having chalked up two goals and three assists since Gameweek 6. Both players will be encouraged by the fact that the Foxes shipped ten goals in their previous four match-ups and have yet to register a clean sheet.

Diego Costa places fourth on his return from suspension with 6% of voters prioritising form over fixtures, given that the Spain international has recorded just one goal in six starts ahead of a home clash against Aston Villa. By that same token, Eden Hazard (4%) – who’s tallied one goal and two assists in his last three starts – could capitalise on the fact that the Villains conceded eight goals across their previous three road matches.

Daniel Sturridge has been backed by 4% of FFScout’s readership after bagging a brace in Gameweek 7. Jurgen Klopp’s first match at the helm pits Liverpool against a Tottenham Hotspur team that’s conceded a solitary goal in their last three showdowns at White Hart Lane. On the flip side, Harry Kane (3%) has netted just one goal in eight starts but will be emboldened in the knowledge that the Reds’ rearguard was breached ten times in the past five Gameweeks.

Even though he’s delivered attacking returns (three goals and two assists) in each of the last four Gameweeks, Dimitri Payet enjoys just 1% of the vote as West Ham United roll up at Crystal Palace. The twinkle-toed French playmaker locks horns with an Eagles backline that’s proved more resolute this campaign, conceding just two goals in their last four fixtures.

Training sessions are decided by the manager and staff. If he didn't train with the team, he must have trained alone at some point.

today would be very light training
its more to do with his fatigue from flight if at all and awareness of weekend tactics

I think it's safe to assume that you can't assume anything with the tinkerman in charge. If he gets minutes he will get goals.

As I have both De Bryune and Pelle, which one of the following should be my pick?

    1) Mane...In form and trained too last night
    2) Yaya Toure...Passed fit by Pellegrini and No aguero means good chance for him to get fwd and penos

Had Mane but now keen on Yaya as a differential for next 4 weeks 🙂

I think if he can stay fit then Yaya is a good shout. He is only just returning though, and Mane has looked very sharp. I would go Mane for now. No problem doubling up as they have the fixtures.

Already made -4 (bringing in: KdB, Mane & Ighalo and taking out: Yaya, Depay & Diouf towards the latter of 1st week of Int'l break) hit this week so not making any more transfers this week but stuck on who to take out in 2 weeks (planning to bring Barkley in).

My current team is below: - I have put the prices that my players will sell for to make it easier.
    Cech (5.5)
    Alderweireld (5.0) Martin (4.5) Clyne (5.5)
    Payet (7.9) KdB (10.3) Mahrez (6.3) Mane - VC (7.8) Sanchez - C (11.2)
    Martial (8.3) Vardy (6.4)
    Panti (4.8) Fonte (5.4) Ighalo (5.2) Kolarov (5.8). I have £0.7m in the bank.

Was hoping to maybe hold on to Kolarov until return although may switch to Kompany. As you can see I have strong midfield already and all have decent/good run of fixtures. I was thinking that I might take out Mane and then bring Pelle in for Martial. Also looking at Liverpool's fixtures I was also hoping to take Clyne out soon, maybe for a Everton defender or MC def, or possibly even an Arsenal def such as Bellerin or Monreal (leaning to latter of the pair if I go for Ars).

Norwich vs Newcastle this week away while Fonte home to Leicester. Was debating between Fonte and Clyne to start but think Leicester likely to score plus got two of their attackers so hoping 0-0 Liv vs Tot as got 1 defender each and new Liv manager in Klopp hopefully tightened defence.

Thanks for the comment at least. 🙂 After Bertrand settled in more after injury I was thinking of straight swap from Fonte but not yet.

I see your point, but can't see Norwich, Villa and those teams hold a clean sheet atm. Maybe get in some Everton players from GW11 as well.

Yeah as I mentioned in the post I'm planning to bring in Barkley within next two weeks and I'm also thinking about bringing in Coleman too.

Although what you said about Norwich is true, they are against Newcastle this week and Martin also has some attacking threat.

Again, thanks for the feedback and advice, appreciated greatly.

Sorry for replying so late but kinda lost own post due to this article being so active at the time.

    [HAZARD VS DE BRUYNE]

I was looking into stats and all, comparing their performances with Belgium (2 goals each in the last 2 games, one assist for KDB, one penalty missed for Hazard)...

Then I realized, this dilemma wasn't about statistics. If you rely on statistics from the last two months, then go for KDB, who's been amazing for his first few games in BPL. Hazard, on the other hand, hasn't been near to his best level. Statistics show that, and we are all aware of this from watching the games.

So there isn't really any debate on who's the best option regarding statistics and recent games. And it's not surprising KDB is being transferred 30 times more than Hazard this gameweek.

But... Hazard is coming at Chelsea with confidence after qualifying for Euro, 2 wins with Belgium, in which he scored twice. He's playing Aston Villa at home. Chelsea's attacking options are all fit (whereas City players aren't). And, last but not least, Hazard remains an amazing top class attacking minded footballer in a team that won the league just a few months ago...

So, even if statistics say otherwise, why not go for Hazard ? Why not gamble on him starting to come good against Villa ?

    1. bigwig
      • 15 Years

Hazard and Chelsea will come good, its inevitable.

Im going with Azpi on my WC and as soon as Hazard starts sparkling, he comes in.

Because I prefer to play the percentages. Chelsea is an unhappy camp, Jose seems to be loosing it, and it is clear to me that no matter who KDB has around him, he is going to score points.

Wild Card holders, using now? I am currently on -8 with Kolarov, and could either play Prodl/Francis, go -12, or activate the WC. Tempted to activate now to have a little competitive advantage and clean up the mess, but also feels prudent to just bench Kolarov, sell him next week, and then stick with a gw11 plan.

    Thanks

No idea but, I'd honestly look to sell one of these guys.
      Two benefits:
      1. No headaches like this each wk
      2. Excess cash to boost your backline

I think really it's between Vardy + Martial this week.

Don't bench Vardy! Southampton v Leicester could be a goalfest.

Between Mahrez and Martial but I'd be unhappy benching either.

So I have Whittaker (new) to come in for Kolarov, which just leaves Richards (che) as cover any injuries to Ayew, Mahrez or Sanchez. Therefore I am wondering doing something with Diouf for a hit, do I:
A: Do nothing an hope everyone plays and he is ok for WAT next week
B: Diouf to Bony for a hit and bench Mahrez
C: Diouf to Lukaku for a hit and bench Mahrez
    Cheers!!!
