If no injuries crop up then Martial to Bony or Kolarov to Bellerin this week?

I thought Martial looked great! Just as likely to score as Bony next week IMO. The second one looks good.

Who to play in the Manchester Derby... Thoughts appreciated.

    a) Darmian
    b) Sagna
    c) Get in Toby for a -4 (higher clean sheet potential and long-term).

United have only conceded one goal at home in the league this season - and that was Benteke's wonder-goal overhead kick.

    Butland, Ruddy
    Bellerin, Cedric, Nyom, Francis, Richards
    KDB, Mane, Payet, Ayew, Mahrez
    Pelle, Lukaku, Vardy

    1FT 6.4 ITB

Bit of a struggle this week, but I don't see any pressing needs in my attack as all have great upcoming fixtures. Would love to get Sanchez, but doing that for Mahrez seems too much of a luxury transfer at the moment, and I feel money is better spent in defense right now.

So thinking Toby for Richards with the FT, Thoughts?

Is it the Dead Zone here yet? Forgive me, those who want nothing to do with this topic, simply scroll down, its not that hard, there's no gun to your head.

The AUTO-reply from FPL towers came:

    Hi Fuzzy,
Please find below an answer to your query relating to the awarding points for this current set of fixtures (GW9).
    1. OPTA, who provide us with all our stats, have decided that Cédric, the Southampton defender, played 59 minutes against Leicester before being substituted, meaning that he was not eligible for the clean sheet bonus, as he did not play 60 minutes. This won't now be changed.

    My reply back:

This automated reply does not acknowledge nor address the argument I have presented.

Explain further if you please, and maybe explain what would happen if Cedric left at 30:42 and Yoshida came on, and Southampton did not concede from then on. Are you saying Cedric played 30, Yoshida played 60 and gets a clean sheet? When clearly Yoshida did not play a FULL 60 minutes?

That is the crux of the issue here. I offered two possible solutions. One seems very doable. Please respond in kind.

    ____________________

Now folks, its not about me whining for 5 points. I admit the deeper thought about the situation is motivated by the fact that its one of my players, but it does not change the fact that there is logic in the argument and it should be properly addressed for future cases.

That said, have at it if you must. Im in Thailand right now and its 4am. Trying to watch some NFL football.

    Cheers

I write about FPL for a living. Have to dedicate my weekends to getting work done so I can spend the other five days getting hammered and delving to all kinds of debauchery.

It also has been raining like mad most of the evening. No stress here. This is like a political process, seemingly tedious and long-winded, but if one has a valid argument to make, damn it Im gonna make it. Thailand will be here in the morning.

In that situation neither would get the clean sheet points. There's nothing in the rules to say one of them has to get the points, just that to get them you need to play for "at least" 60 minutes.

To many other parties, Cedric owners or not, the scenario is not so simple.

Either way, a sub gets a minute rounded up every time, while a starter is rounded down.

That no longer makes sense at all. If 59.59 minutes is on 59th minute in FPL terms, then in FPL terms... 60 minutes is 59 minutes? Why on earth would that be?

So, if full 60 minutes is 60 minutes, then sure 59.59 is on 60th minute?

I don't get at all why you think that 60th minute should not exist in FPL terms. The CS and appearance points are not given for appearing on 60th minute, but for playing full 60 minutes.

1st minute is the minute counting from when no time has elapsed at all, up until 1 minute has been completed, 2nd minute is the minute counting from when 1 minute has been completed up until 2 minutes from the initial beginning are full, and so on. 59th minute is the minute starting from completion of 58 minutes since beginning of the count, and when 59 minutes are completed, starts the 60th minute which lasts until the full 60 minutes from the beginning have been counted. And that's the 60 minutes, from which 61st minute begins.

There's absolutely no reason why this should be different for FPL.

Exactly. CS needs 60 minutes like you say. For a GK/defender & mid, 58.01 to 59.59 all has the same value of 59 minutes. Same for a forward without CS as only 1 appearance point is given.

you keep saying simple, what is simple about a time frame of 1:58 seconds being considered only 1 minute?

and again, if cedric comes off at 30:42 for yoshida, the minutes played would indicate in the detalied FPL report that Cedric played 30 and Yoshida 60.

If the whole idea of being rewarded a CS is to complete a FULL 60, why would Yoshida in that case get credited for 60 minutes when it is not?

Tell me its simple one more time and jump out a window.

Yoshida wouldn't get credited with a CS in this case.
For an example when it has occurred if you can.

A clean sheet is awarded for not conceding a goal whilst on the pitch and playing at least 60 minutes.

but in the match report in the scenario i presented, would Yoshida coming on in the 30th minute NOT be shown to have played 60 at the end of the match in the FPL match details. The two players have to add up to 90 and they are not going to give Cedric 31 minutes for leaving on 30:42.

Yoshida is coming on in the 31st minute. Same result as coming on in the 1st minute. He would get 89 minutes. Cedric 31 Yoshida 59. A CS need 60 full minutes played.

Needs to add to 90. One gets more & one less.
60 full minutes for a CS is the main point.

Time played by player subbed on + time played by player subbed off = 90 minutes in all cases.

If Cedric is determined to have played less than 60 minutes, he is credited with 59 minutes, therefore by extension Yoshida is credited with 31 minutes.

Blame the FPL algorithm for rounding minutes up or down if you like, but the rules for points scoring could not be any clearer.

if you read my original letter, the solution I presented involved rounding up or down based on the 30 second mark of a given substitution as the dividing line. If it is about players playing completed full minutes, it should apply on both sides of a substitution or rounded accordingly, not automatically rounded down for the starter.

I thought I was the only one frustrating people here today 🙂

Although I love arguing points with FPL (check my post history) I do feel that they got this one right. It was my understanding that a player has to complete 60 mins to score a clean sheet. Cedric, as harsh as it is, didn't.

Sorry mate I do feel your pain.

its not about me crying for points. again, i am naturally motivated to debate the issue because it involves one of my players. as it would for just about all of you in other situations.

I would be more pleased to simply have an altered rule going forward, like the one I presented in the original letter.

Christ people, even the religious texts that have lasted 1000s of years arent always perfect. Some are just as stubborn to fold their arms and say it is what it is. I say it can be improved.

What you fail to see and others fail to explain you is that the "rounding up" is cosmetic only. The point is that the player must feature for 60 minutes of the official 90 minute game time, counted by seconds. If Targett comes on the field for injured Bertrand at 04:05, and himself is sent off at 64:01, he will not get the CS nor the appearance points - he needs to play over the 64:05 mark to get those points. 60 full minutes, the rounding is away from that mark just to avoid the confusion of player not getting appearance or CS points despite appearing to have played 60 minutes.

    UFPL

Nice problem to have but what to do? My two lowest scoring players in UFPL have 5 and 7 pts respectively, I have Gomis and Ayew on the bench, do I...

    A) Stick which will drop me down in rankings when others bring in subs/change capts

    B) Just sub one in for 5pts, in which case who Gomis or Ayew?

    C) Big punt on both (would require at least a goal from one and an assist from the other.

Thanks but 'only' 104 in reality as I made 5 x 3 week loan moves. Two free weeks to go 🙂

The fact that every goal scorer gets 6pts and he's on pens leans me this way but he's actually shite atm 🙁

Ayew if any. Gomis looses points too easily

Anyone else stuck with Oxford and Krul in their teams and just can't seem shift them because more important things force your hand ?

I have oxford, but i dont think 5 playing defenders needed. 2 major ones and 2 smaller ones who rotate.

Bench boost would need all 5 tho

I have, not too worried though, Oxford always fodder and Krul permanent back up, get rid of Krul when I get the chance and Oxford before bench boost week. Neither look like values will ever drop 🙂

Playing in a draft league and KDB has been taken:

    A) Hazard -> Sterling / Wally (own Sanchez and no city)
    B) Richards -> Alderwield / Dier
    C) Naughton -> Monreal

    Any thoughts?

what weak draft league are you playing where Monreal, Sterling and Walcott are free?
also why do you have Richards when Monreal is free.
      so confused.

Lens and M'villa are decent. Rest are rubbish.

Okay, I kind of agree here. M'Vila can be excellent, but he can also be a disaster, he's a mental case. Lens, I'm not so convinced about him. Anyway, let's agree on them, that's still just 2. It's not enough. Any other club in PL has more than 2 class players.

      Bournemouth - too many injuries
      Norwich - not enough class
Villa - terribly run club and manager (unless they find a good sherwood replacement around xmas)

unfortunately the 3 promos Norwich, Watford, Bournemouth.
I reckon Villa will sack Sherwood soonish and also strengthen in January.
Allardyce will sign Kevin Nolan and finish 17th.

Villa has classy players and Sherwood is better than his reputation. I guarantee they'll stay up.

Sunderland is as good as relegated already, Bournemouth didn't need any bad luck with injuries to confirm their relegation either. The third club relegated will probably be either Norwich or Newcastle. Newcastle's squad looks too good to be relegated, but the way they play they could get relegated from the Championship. If the manager (maybe the _next_ manager) can get his players to play up to their level, Newcastle should, however, be _able_ to stay up.

Spurs are really solid now. Toby and Vertonghen with Lloris behind them is a great partnership. All from the Belgium/France area too 🙂

Anyway, also Spurs play Bournemouth next on a Sunday then Villa at home on the following Monday so that's a huge plus point.

That is also when Arsenal's fixtures turn nice so you can do a nice cheeky swap to another Arsenal defender then (Monreal/Bellerin/Kosc) if you haven't got 3 Arsenal players already of course. 🙂
