FIFFSA – Five-a-side World Cup Update

Welcome to the latest update on the FIFFSA Five-A-Side World Cup. We are delighted to announce we already have 41 complete teams and nine more managers actively recruiting. This is a really impressive turn out already considering there are still two more weeks to sign up. We want to thank all of you for your participation and especially those who have already got in to the spirit of the tournament and have been making press conferences in the articles and making new gravatars for the occasion. The Tournament Format

As some of you have already been asking, we’d like to elaborate a bit on the tournament format, which we have previously said would follow a World Cup Format as closely as possible.

This means we want to stage a final 32 team World Cup in Thailand, staying true to this years amateur five-a-side World Cup’s location. To get to Thailand there will be a qualifying format not dissimilar to the FIFA World Cup’s qualifying process with qualifying groups and playoffs for best losers. The qualifying process will last between five and eight weeks to ensure that no teams leave the competition too early.

The exact format of the qualifying is yet to be worked out as the number of teams is still growing but we will finalise the process shortly after the registration deadline on November 11th.

How do the matches work?

The Five-A-Side World Cup is a tournament open to squads of six players, who will field a team of five players each week, with one player on the substitute’s bench. A team’s score each week will be the sum of the FPL scores of the five players the team fields.

Each week, teams will go head to head against another team and the team with the highest aggregate score will win that match.

Can I still join?

Anybody in the FFScout community with an official FPL team is eligible to join,Whether this is your first season or your tenth.

IF you want to join a team that is still recruiting, please check this spreadsheet to see which captains still have space and  then contact them either here on FFS or via email should you wish to join their nation.

For individuals who wish to participate in the tournament but not are unsure who you want to join, you can fill out this form for players looking for a team. Your details will then be included on our unaffiliated players list that will be passed to the team captains to recruit from. A post on this article may also attract the interest of a captain.

If you are interested in captaining your own nation, please email fiffsa.exec@gmail.com to confirm the nation’s availability and allow us to track team numbers. The countries to be represented will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis as captains volunteer themselves.

Once you have a team together, with at least five players but preferably six, you should fill out this form to register your squad.

For the new managers amongst us, FIFFSA have put together a brief guide on the captaincy role and what the job entails.

If you have any further queries, feel free to ask below in the comments or email us at: fiffsa.exec@gmail.com

As a final request, please do try and keep FIFFSA 5-A-Side chat to the comment sections of our articles.

Enjoy the tournament; this is the FIFFSA 5-A-Side World Cup. Accept no imitations.

All that matters is the team is now fully complete and is much better than when it started. Also residing in a more beautiful country!

Can't believe I was prevented from representing my motherland because of you, and now to add insult to injury you've all gone and betrayed almighty Switzerland!

This will not be forgotten! :p

    Hi all unaffiliated players,

I'd strongly recommend you contact captains of teams that are not full yet - it looks like Croatia and Montenegro are still looking for players. I'm team captain for Zambia, and despite my blank team appearing on the spreadsheet for quite a while along with my email address, I only had 1 unsolicited email from a potential team member - and I offered him a spot on the team. If you make it easy for a team captain, you're much more likely to get picked up.

I'm completely new to these team competitions, and the other thing I'd highlight is how easy it is to get a team set up and fill it. There's a whole spreadsheet with unaffiliated players, which also makes it very easy to get your own team set up.

So no excuses for not getting yourself on a team if you want to be on one.

Team Zambia is now complete, so unless we have some Swiss style defections, we are no longer recruiting.

In typical fashion for this region, we are entering the competition having played no friendlies, with a rookie manager, and with a major dispute with our players over bonus payments. It appears that some of our players have a problem accepting goats as legal tender....

Despite all these problems, we will rise up like Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders...)

and it looks like you will be last team out for the opening ceremony parade.

there's an opening parade?!?! no one mentioned an opening parade!! we'll never have time to get chitenge outfits ready on time.

at least zimbabwe are behind us. i'm sure they will bring a sense decorum to the conclusion of the parade....

Agreed Tiki-Taka in Lusaka (nice name btw),

If anyone is still looking for a team, please email those teams with their emails still on the spreadsheet

I believe Croatia, Montenegro, Tahiti, Bhutan, Egypt and the Solomon Islands all have a single place left.

We have 60 teams on the team spreadsheet and team numbers are going to be limited at 64 so there are now limited spaces available. Given there are 42 names on the unaffiliated player list, some will miss out so I'd encourage anyone interested to act fast.

I'd encourage anyone keen to play to think about captaincy. There is also a captaincy guide showing how easy the role is http://docs.google.com/document/d/1EJVTXb94HG0jPIrtiepKr37UxoY3ZPLuVW8dgQHfaI8/edit

If interested, please email fiffsa.exec@gmail.com and we will help you setup a team.

Is it still possible to join a team for this? I'm doing very badly this season but still have my WC available and a nice, easy to remember FPL ID (8) if anyone needs a team member?!

      Hooky,

there are teams still looking. I know Croatia and Montenegro have 5 out of 6 players sorted but were still looking.

If you email one of them to start. Emails are on the team spreadsheet below.

If they are full then let us know. Should be a new article out tonight as well.

    Friendly Watch - GW12

While some claimed their absence in Brazil in GW11 was an act of begrudgingly refusing to go along with the flow (i.e. the Swiss), others had documents submitted late (we know ourselves), others were simply nonchalant about it (Northern Ireland) and others hadn't really made their minds up on whether they would participate (i.e. Cayman Islands). However, GW12 presented an excellent opportunity for those that missed out previously to get to stretch their legs and see if their preparations were in line with their World Cup ambitions. Northern Ireland was to play against Cayman Islands though no one really knows about the results, and Malaysia, having beaten Brazil at home last week, hosted a slightly sunburnt Finnish team.

Both captains sat out the match in a sign of sportsmanship and had wine in the Director's box while the game was played out under floodlights. The quality of the forwards looked to be of equal measure on paper but the Malaysian team took an early lead in the early exchanges with a pair of Vardy captainers and a Lukaku (c) as well. A triple Butland, a Bertrand and a VVD levelled things and capped a fantastic defensive performance for the Finns, there was a massive Sanchez, KDB and Bony fail that would have resulted in a very different result but in the end, the point hits on the Malaysian side proved to be decisive as they helped the Finnish team take a late, narrow lead. They successfully held on and the match ended 260 - 254 in favour of Finland. It was a typical pre-season game with lots of smiles and lazy tackles but important for keeping match fitness.

The Finns thanked the Malaysians for hosting them and as customary, there was a lot of the excellent Minttu and Koskenkorva provided courtesy of the Finnish supporters. The teams now head into the International Break hoping for no injuries to their star players, but before that Team Finland will remain in Malaysia for a week to celebrate the Deepavali (Festival of Lights) together with their new friends before heading back to Thailand for the final preparations.

Portugal note that the Netherlands and Belgium (the top two scorers in friendlies) have been drawn together in UEFA Group C. That's looking like a group of death right now, glad we avoided it!
