It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Romelu Lukaku – having found the back of the net in six successive starts – takes pride of place at the summit of our Captain Poll with 37% of the vote. Although Everton face a tall task rebuffing Leicester’s effervescent attack at Goodison Park, they’ll be emboldened in the knowledge that Claudio Ranieri’s troops have carded just three clean sheets this term and are without the suspended Robert Huth.

The Foxes’ man of the moment, Riyad Mahrez is next in line with 18% backing. The Algeria international boasts four goals in his last two outings and has amassed eight double-figure point hauls across 15 appearances. Despite delivering attacking returns in all but one of his 16 starts, Jamie Vardy (4%) plays second fiddle to his partner in crime.

Eden Hazard (7%) makes a surprise entry in the top three. The fleet-footed Lille graduate has notched just once this season and has drawn eight blanks on the trot. Nonetheless, should he recover from injuruy, he’s afforded a great opportunity to kick-start his campaign when Sunderland – who rank joint-third for goals conceded (30) – make the trip to Stamford Bridge. The favourable nature of the Blues’ match-up also finds room for Diego Costa (2%) in the Captain Poll.

Georginio Wijnaldum (7%) scooped 14 points against Liverpool in Gameweek 15 and has arguably been Newcastle’s star performer during their recent revival. All seven of the Dutchman’s league goals have arrived on home turf, which renders him an intriguing differential pick ahead of Aston Villa’s visit to St James’ Park.

Mesut Ozil and Harry Kane (both 3%) attracted an identical following this time around. The former has delivered attacking returns in each of his previous 10 starts but faces a Manchester City defence that’s conceded just six times on the road. Meanwhile, the latter is without a goal in three matches but could benefit from Mousa Dembele’s likely return to action when Spurs travel to Southampton.

Philippe Coutinho and Sergio Aguero both come in at the 2% mark ahead of their road respective road ties. Coutinho will do well to breach a Watford rearguard that ranks third for home goals conceded (six), while it remains to be seen whether Aguero will even start for City in Monday’s trip to the Etihad.

IMO, there is no point having him unless he is 100% confirmed to play Sunderland, his fixtures after that game are tough - Watford are no push over for instance.

People talk a lot about players Chelsea have sold. The only mistakes were KDB, Sturridge and Lukaku.

Mata for £37m, Schurrle for £24m, Luiz for £40m. Most clubs would accept those bids.

Maybe not the first 3 but the latter 3 aren't worth those prices. Schurrle probably closest to the value sold for. Mata and Luiz not worth 37 and 40 respectively.

Yes, Luiz was clearly not seen as a CB by Mourinho and he mentioned that. His first choice CBs were always going to be Cahill and Terry. Luiz was a lot of times a liability.

They only got 12m for a man who scores when he plays. Pretty sure they'd rather have Studge on the bench over Remy. Or a fully fit Studge over Costa

Oh for crying out loud, he barely got a look in here as a lone striker. If he had stayed and was our second 'striker' now, he'd be bloody rubbish. Him joining Liverpool and starting upfront constantly was the best thing for him. + he's made of glass, you talk so much tripe.

KDB was nowhere near the player he is now though, Lukaku also didn't want to fight for a place, he wanted to leave.

You have to be patient with some players and KDB is a prime example. He'd get into the Chelsea team comfortably. I do like Oscar though.

Chelsea should have started Lukaku, it seems like everyone bar Chelsea saw his potential. If you sign young players, you have to be patient with him and give them games. I think Chelsea have learnt from it

You've completely ignored what I've said, about Lukaku especially. He didn't want to fight off bloody Torres for a starting role. He wanted guaranteed football. As for KDB, it's just one of them things, he would now yes. I'm pretty sure Bertrand Traore, Kenedy etc would start now if given the chance.

People here were laughing at Everton "wasting" £27m on Lukaku last season

KDB is the only howler out of that lot. I like Sturridge but he's made of glass, not what you want in an elite European team.

Even though Sturridge can be a very very good player. I'd argue that if they got more money in return for him it could also be seeing as dodging a bullet. 60 games since 2013 at that wage is not productive.

    Butland (Schmeichel)
    Kolarov Bellerin Moreno (VvD, Saylor)
    KDB Ozil Mahrez Barkley (Wanyama)
    Vardy Lukaku Kane

    2.1 ITB.

    Anything worth a hit?

    Help:

    A) Hazard -> Mahrez
    B) Hazard -> ? (own Ozil, Ramsey, Barkley, Mane)
    C) Start Hazard with Pelle first off the bench.

    Cheers.

No scratch that - you're avoiding the double-up in defence which is fair enough

Never (c) and (vc) players in the same match. Just in case 😉

Oh I forgot that rule! I don't really do 'rules' but there's logic to this one. We've not had any reports of particularly bad weather though, have we?

Not sure, but it's always wise to be cautious in December & January

Ighalo and hedge your bets, IMO. I'd be looking to sell Barkley as well (but I'm not a fan).
