Our first trio of overlooked Fantasy options for 2016 has us turn to the defence for something different as Swansea’s bonus-bagging skipper into contention, along with a prime Fantasy asset who may just be ridding himself of personal demons to become worthy of consideration once again. We round things off with a Hammer’s battering ram scrapping for his starting role as the Upton Park treatment room begins to empty.

Ashley Williams

Swansea City failed to register a single clean sheet during Garry Monk’s final 10 matches at the helm, but they’ve only conceded in one fixture since Alan Curtis assumed the role of caretaker manager. The Swans have strung together three successive shut-outs, with Ashley Williams (4.8) scooping the maximum bonus points in each match-up. In fact, the Wales international has missed out on just one bonus point across Swansea’s five clean sheets this term and ranks third among all defenders for BPS score (412). Furthermore, Williams is ranked first for blocks (28), second for clearances (156) and third for Interceptions (52) amongst defenders this season, highlighting his key contribution for the Liberty outfit.

Delving deeper into Swansea’s underlying defensive stats over the past four Gameweeks suggests they’re a more disciplined outfit under Curtis. No team surrendered fewer big chances (two) across that stretch, while they ranked in the bottom seven for shots inside the box conceded (27) and bottom eight for shots outside the box conceded (16).

Next on the agenda for Swansea is a trip to Manchester United, followed by a home encounter against Sunderland. Their shut-out aspirations are bolstered by the fact that these two clubs ranked joint-bottom for goals (two) over the last four Gameweeks. Moreover, only three sides have recorded fewer shots on target (18) than the Red Devils since Gameweek 14, boosting Williams’ prospects of further points returns.

Branislav Ivanovic

While it would be folly to buy into the Guus Hiddink revolution just yet, there are signs that the Dutchman is already reviving fortunes and therefore their cast of Fantasy assets.

Ivanovic was once a crown jewel for Fantasy Football managers – a defender that combined the potential to claim clean sheets, alongside a set-piece goal threat and the propensity to raid forward and supply crosses. It was a heady combination.

Damaged by Chelsea’s alarming slide and an array of quite pitiful individual displays under Jose Mourinho, it will take time for us to come around to the idea of considering Ivanovic again. However, with under 8% ownership, early adopters may just be giving themselves the opportunity to bag a handy differential.

Since Hiddink’s arrival, Chelsea have conceded fewer goal attempts per match, while Ivanovic has upped his touches in the box and his rate of creating chances for others. The early indications are that the Serb could edge his way back into our affections.

Fixtures against a Crystal Palace (who have failed to score in their last two outings) and West Brom (who have scored just six goals in nine away from home) compound his short-term appeal.

Michail Antonio

Michail Antonio (5.2) had to bide his time following a summer switch from Nottingham Forest, but – in the wake of West Ham United’s injury crisis – the English wide man has been afforded four consecutive league starts. Having been involved (one goal, two assists) in all three of West Ham’s goals across the last four Gameweeks, Antonio should retain his starting berth irrespective of Victor Moses’ potential return this weekend.

Offering a glimpse of the form that saw him bag 14 goals in the Championship last season, Antonio placed joint-seventh for attempts (10) and fourth for shots inside the box (seven) among all midfielders over the previous four Gameweeks. Furthermore, Gerard Deulofeu was the only midfielder that carded more penalty-box touches (20) than Antonino (19), emphasising his willingness to foray forward.

West Ham’s goals have dried up of late (three in five), but Manuel Lanzini returned from injury earlier in the week and Dimitri Payet could feature against Liverpool, furnishing the Irons with some much-needed creative spark at the Boelyn Ground. Although the Reds secured clean sheets in their previous two outings, Slaven Bilic’s charges will draw heart from their opponent’s recent road defeats at the hands of Watford (3-0) and Newcastle United (2-0).

I was captaining ozil. Then I did mahrez. Then I had a moment of truth. I did Ramsey to Theo and Francis to Smith and now I'm captaining Theo. Huge upside. His assists theos goals would work. He's explosion imminent with the chances he's getting.

After going for and failing with two relative differential capt picks this Xmas ( mahrez, Ramsey) it's time I returned to my dullard ways. Ozil for me - wenger has indicated he will definitely start and the fixture is primed for him to add to his assist and bonus tally.

Been switching between Mahrez, Kane and Walcott, slept through this process and I can't remember who got the band.
      Maybe, it's for the best.

Ozil because my New Years resolution is to stop punting with the captaincy.

      I have Özil and Mahrez.
But, Kane and Ali is my captain and vice captain.

      Why?

I know Özil and Mahrez are on form right now, but all of we are too underestimate about Newcastle and Bournemouth improve form in defence. Both teams are not the same since December that was ONLY conceded 4 goals in 5 last match. In that period, Newcastle got win againts Liverpool (Home: 2-0) and Spurs (Away: 1-2), and Bournemouth got win againts Chelsea (Away: 0-1) and Man. United (Home: 2-1).

They choose to play 'REACTIVE FOOTBALL'. Build a compact low block structure (park the bus?) and get the counter attack in good moment, when the opponent is on unstructured shape.

I think Kane (C) and Ali (VC) is a GOOD differential pick atm, because, FYI, Everton is the MOST CONCEDED GOALS AT HOME IN THIS SEASON (19). Because, when playing at home, they play all-out-attack and risking their defence.

      Cheers! 😀

Can't make up my mind between Ozil and Mahrez.
I have switched C, VC between the two several times. Will probably end up on Ozil.
I got burnt a bit last week with Ramsey as a punt C

Ozil, although I might be a jinx, Ive only captained him once v sou for his only blank in ages 🙁

Arsenal should score the most goals this weekend I reckon tho, so a safer bet this time

Ozil. Absolute no brainer given everyone has him and 50%+ will be captaining him. Also Ozil is absolutely brilliant and in sublime form atm

Mahrez. Because if you'd ever wanna captain Mahrez - surely, it's now.

After reading the New Years resolution thread there's lots of mentions of picking safe captains, I reckon I should join them. I've gotten to the point where taking risks with captains isn't working.

So I'm picking Ozil as captain, for the first time this season and given my appalling captain record...sorry about this blank!

The 'old' me would have gone for Ighalo, let's see how this works out.

Mahrez, as I prefer not to go with the majority, makes it more satisfying if he does well. Plus fantasy football is a bit of fun for me at the end if the day, I like to make my own judgements, again because its more satisfying for me...three week captaining of ighalo several weeks back was a great feelling!

If you're not playing Rangel this week , might as well sell him because he is a rotation risk. Not that it's necessary but you could get a nailed on defender and not waste a transfer .

I wouldn't bench Ighalo (the most in form player at the mo - other than Ozil)

      I would bench robably Arnautovic.

KDB is 11mil for a reason. no point having him if you're going to bench Vs Watford

    Bench one:

    a) Moreno (whu)
    b) Monreal (new)
    c) Williams (mun)
    d) Wollsheid (wba)

Williams looks obvious at first, but I think, that I should play him against poor MUN attack.

You need Lukaku, he is the man this season. I'd go for Giroud this week but leave enough cash to swap him to Aguero for next week. Then vardy or ighalo. Probably ighalo as he's proven himself against the tougher defences and you'll prob have mahrez in your mid, so

Vardy is off the boil a bit (if you check his stats)

      ABD for me.

Kun - Good diff and proven quality
Lukaku - Very good form, everything everton do goes through him
Ighalo - cheap in form enabler for Kun
