Eden Hazard could be out for two weeks after undergoing scans on a groin injury. Geoff Cameron wins an appeal over his three-match ban, Arsene Wenger is keen to rest his regulars for FA Cup duties, whilst Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson remain sidelined for Liverpool’s cup clash with the Potters tonight.

Hazard Undergoes Groin Injury Scans

Reports indicate that the groin injury that forced Eden Hazard off against Palace last weekend isn’t as bad as first feared. The Belgian underwent scans on the injury yesterday and although tests have suggested there is no serious problem, Hazard may still miss the next couple of weeks as he recuperates.

The Scout Says: With a single goal and three assists to his name all season, it’s somewhat surprising that Hazard still sits in over 12% of FPL teams, given his 10.8 price tag. Chelsea’s form has clearly taken a turn for the better since Guus Hiddink arrived and although the Belgian has continued to struggle for both form and fitness, team-mates Willian (one goal, four assists), Oscar (two goals, one assist) and Diego Costa (three goals, one assist) have stepped up in the four matches since the departure of Jose Mourinho. At just 7.1 and 8.2 respectively, Willian and Oscar are far more reasonably priced for those looking for a route into Hiddink’s midfield as the Blues prepare for four home fixtures (WBA, EVE, MUN, NEW) in the next six Gameweeks.

Cameron wins appeal

The FA have written off Geoff Cameron’s three-match suspension after the USA international was wrongly awarded a red card for violent conduct at the weekend.

The Scout Says: In light of the FA’s about-turn, Cameron will be available for selection when Norwich City pay a visit in Gameweek 21. The versatile American – who’s classified as a defender in the Fantasy Premier League – relinquished his centre-back berth earlier in the campaign but recently has been favoured over Charlie Adam in central midfield. Although Cameron (4.3) offers out-of-position potential from that slot, his negligible goal threat (two in 131 appearances) and rotation risk ensure that Philipp Wollscheid (4.5) is a more attractive route into the Staffordshire outfit’s rearguard. Glen Johnson (5.3) has tallied five more attempts (13) and three more key passes (15) than any of his defensive team-mates but carries a more prohibitive price tag. Ultimately, Stoke as a whole have conceded the joint-fewest goals (11) and carded the most clean sheets (eight) since Gameweek 8 but could struggle to sustain that momentum as they prepare to lock horns with Leicester City and Arsenal across the next three Gameweeks (NOR, ARS, lei).

Wenger looking to rest regulars this weekend

Arsene Wenger confirmed that he intends to rotate some of his players when Arsenal welcome Sunderland to the Emirates in their FA Cup third round clash on Saturday:

“Of course I will give them a rest. I will give them a couple of days, an extra rest, but you never know what shape they come back in! It depends what you do when you have a rest! You can come back more tired!”

The Scout Says: Arsenal are to be commended for grinding out a result against Newcastle United last Gameweek, but they were second best for much of the encounter – as evidenced by the fact they mustered half the visitors’ tally of shots on target (six to three). A period of rest for their regulars – ahead of a challenging trip to Liverpool next Wednesday – could pay dividends then, with Mesut Ozil among those that Wenger is monitoring carefully. On the flip side, this cup interlude could afford Alexis Sanchez the freedom to generate some match fitness on his return from a hamstring strain. Wenger hinted earlier in the week that the Chilean could feature against the Black Cats, potentially lining him up for a cameo at Anfield.

Cherries Appeal Francis Dismissal

Bournemouth have confirmed they are set to appeal the red cad accrued by Simon Francis for appearing to deny Jamie Vardy a goal scoring opportunity at the King Power Stadium last weekend. Eddie Howe was initially set to accept the one-match suspension but has had a change of heart as it could effect Francis’ disciplinary record later in the season. The downside is that if the governing body deem the appeal to be a frivolous one, they are within their rights to double the defender’s ban.

The Scout Says: At present, Francis is only set to miss the upcoming FA Cup clash with Birmingham but an extension would also see him miss their Gameweek 21 home encounter with West Ham. The Cherries defence chalked up just one clean sheet through the first 14 Gameweeks but has since notched three shut-outs in six outings, augmenting the allure of their budget rearguard recruits. Aside from being tasked with taking penalties, Charlie Daniels ranks top for attempts (10), joint-top for shots inside the box (seven) and top for key passes (21) among Bournemouth’s back line – incidentally, only Alberto Moreno (39), Aleksandar Kolarov (32) and Aaron Cresswell (26) chart above him for chances created over the season. As such, he represents the south-coast club’s prime defender as they gear up for a favourable quartet of fixtures (WHU, NOR, sun, cry).

Jagielka in line for weekend return

Roberto Martinez intimated that Phil Jagielka could start for Everton when they play host to Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup this Saturday:

“He is not fully fit. The FA Cup third round is a more realistic target to start. But even having Phil on the bench gives you a lift. If we can maintain that defensive intensity it will be important because our play going forward is as good as anyone in the league.”

The Scout Says: In the nine league fixtures that Jagielka has started and finished this term, the Toffees conceded 1.22 goals per match and posted a clean-sheet ratio of 0.33. Conversely, during the 10 fixtures that their captain has missed due to a knee ligament injury, the Toffees conceded 1.6 goals per match and carded a clean-sheet ratio of 0.2, suggesting that Jagielka’s presence has been sorely missed. For now, we’re unenthused by an Everton defence that’s notched one clean sheet in seven outings and faces back-to-back trips to Manchester City and Chelsea in the coming weeks.

Reds Duo still sidelined for cup clash

Jurgen Klopp revealed that Daniel Sturridge has missed recent training sessions because of niggling muscle complaints:

“Daniel had some problems this week, not serious, but he could not train, he could not make the next session. We had to wait a day, the muscles here, something like this, how a pre-season can be. It’s a pre-season without games so it should not happen too much but some little things happen and you’ve always got to handle this.”

Jordan Henderson, meanwhile, is undergoing treatment that Klopp hopes will bring an end to his persistent heel issue:

“We don’t really know because we have to wait. Each day, each hour, each minute. The thing that happened with the tendon in the foot is good, it’s painful but it’s good. We hope that when the blood is out of the foot, then the situation is solved. But at this moment we have blood around the heel. So he cannot train or play but we hope it is not serious. He is having treatment, everything we can do to bring the blood out of the foot we are doing but we cannot rush. It’s time we need and I can say nothing else.”

The Scout Says: Sturridge’s ongoing injury travails are affording Christian Benteke a free run at the lone-striker berth. The Belgium international boasts two goals in three starts but has flattered to deceive for the majority of his pitch time, carding the worst shot accuracy (25%) among all forwards that clocked at least 200 minutes across the last four Gameweeks. His erratic finishing reflects Liverpool as a unit, given that only Newcastle rank below the Reds in terms of goals (one compared to two) and shot-conversion rate (2.5% to 2.6%) since Gameweek 17. Considering that two of the league’s top-three defences are next on the agenda (ARS, MUN) for Liverpool, that trend could be set to continue.

Premierleague will for sure be the hardest challenge in his career so far. I can walk to the Barcelona and Bayern team right now and compete for everything

I don't buy this line of thinking. Firstly, Barcelona were a shambles when he took over. He came straight in, as an unproven manager, and sold Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Deco. It's impossible to really quantify how bold that is, it would be like Zidane selling Ronaldo, Benzema and Modric this month. He then brought in a load of unknown youth players, and led arguably the greatest team in history. Of course, having unbelievable players was key, but they weren't world beaters when he took over. Rijkaard had Xavi, Iniesta and Messi, and he was falling apart when Guardiola came in. He took that side and turned them into the greatest not over a decade, like say Ferguson (not that Utd ever had a side that good), but within a year or two. No one else in history has done what he did there, and many managers have inherited great players.

At Bayern, taking over from a man who has won absolutely everything is extremely difficult - just ask David Moyes. Also, I know that everyone in the club, and Bayern fans, believe that Guardiola has elevated their team to a whole new level. Winning the CL is very difficult, and he's been unable to do that (so far), but he has smashed all records in the Bundesliga, and that's without the bulk of the team he inherited.

I think he's a remarkable manager, by far the best in the world.

            See my argument below 😆

I see what you're saying but those teams can win titles by themselves. I agree with you that he's remarkable and best in the world but a challenge such as taking over United is far far greater than any he's had before

Got two options and this is doing my head in! Any opinions?:

    A) Lukaku/Kane ---> Aguero
    B) Ramsey ----> Payet

Aguero with two home fixtures is so tempting, but getting rid of either Kane or Lukaku is so risky right now....I feel like Ramsey to Payet could potentially wait until next week, although again Payet vs Bournemouth has a decent change of points....

How many FF managers out there are looking at Costa is a viable striker option? He seems to actually be playing decently since Jose left...

I know that Vardy is likely to be a transfer out of my team soon and I'm torn between Costa or Kun.

    Slightly disappointed with Guardiola.

Obviously he wants to come to England to properly prove himself as a manager. Had it easy at Barca seeing as they had one of the greatest teams of all time and the moved to Bayern who play in a one team league.

Picking City is a bit of a cop out. Would have a much tougher challenge at any other club.

What do you want him to do? Take over Villa?

Also he didn't walk into a winning Barcelona team. He took over just after Reijkard and Ronaldinho left and they were struggling. He built that team into the best ever, yes, having Messi Iniesta Xavi in their their prime helped but he deserves credit

This is such an inane argument. Look at the rotating cast of managers at Madrid, they have all of the money in the world and can't win everything that Guardiola did within a couple of years at Barcelona. Van Gaal has unlimited money and look at the dross he's thrown up, ditto Mourinho this season. Guardiola built the teams he has managed, that Barcelona team were completely different (and much worse) when he came in. This idea that he's lucky is so misguided, and I expect we'll see it when he turns up here and schools his rivals.

He only brought a few players, Pique, Alves. The rest were promoted from the B team to the first team. Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Messi were at the club. Those four are legendary players and arguable the greatest talent we have seen in the last twenty years.

Tika taka was created by Cruyff not Guardiolas, he simply tweeked it. I would argue without Messi, Guardiola wouldn't be the success he is today. Ask Luis Enrique.

As Barcelona manager one fact is overlooked, his failure in the transfer market. He made countless big money signings which were total flops. Was Messi the factor in Guardiola being successful at Barca, due to the fact he hasn't matched the success at Bayern on a European level.

Yes, those key players were there under Rijkaard, and he was really struggling. Also, bar maybe Puyol, none of those players were anywhere near the level that Guardiola took them to under Rijkaard. The argument seems to be "well he only created the best team in the world because he had the best team in the world". Well, yes, of course, but would they have reached those levels without Guardiola? Simply, no, no they wouldn't. The managers that followed him failed with the same players, and the system/team has needed an overhaul under Enrique.

If you stuck any other manager in after Rijkaard - Mourinho, Ferguson, Heynckes, any of them - Barcelona would never, ever have reached the levels that they did.

      Ha, I'll C&P what I said above:

      1. The Raging Bull
        • 12 Years

Very good manager, yet overhyped, he's been embarrassed in the CL by Real and Barca in the last two seasons.

Bundesliga isn't as strong as the Prem, therefore he is able to break records with a team full of good players and a club with more resources than other clubs.

I would like to see Pep join a club in the Premiership who doesn't have the resources as City, Chelsea or Utd. If he proves successful at that club then I can join you in applauding him.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years

Well Bayern have always dominated the Bundesliga and he's doing things that no one else in that league ever has. He got his tactics wrong in the CL semi-final, but going out in 2 CL semi-finals is hardly embarrassing. Disappointing for him, certainly, and he's not infallible, but he's the best manager working at the moment by miles. Also, as I said above, why would he go to a mid table team? Great players join top clubs, as do great managers.

One downside about him is that he doesn't stay long enough at a club to prove longevity, an accusation often aimed at Mourinho.

The likes of Wenger and Howe can be considered more successful in building up their clubs with limited budgets, something I don't think Guardiola has done, or is interested in doing, correct me if I am wrong.

Guardiola just wants perfection on the pitch, and is the best at achieving that with unlimited resources.

            1. Doolittle

The longevity point is a fair one, but whereas Mourinho's teams seem to fall apart after a couple of years, Guardiola appears to simply want to do something new. He looks like someone who could be successful at a club for a long time, and has left both Barcelona and Bayern at/near the top, he just seems to effectively get bored.

Klopp went to a mid table side in Liverpool. If you truly regard yourself at the best, then you prove it by winning against all odds. That's the big challenge.

If you want to protect your legacy, then you shirk the challenge and join a City or Chelsea.

If Klopp wins honours at Pool that will get more kudos than anything Pep achieves at the rich club.

Yes, if Klopp wins titles at Liverpool then that would be massive, but Klopp is an anomaly. Also, did Klopp turn down other clubs? Genuine question, he may well have done as he's a fantastic manager, but was he turning down Madrid, City, Utd etc. for Liverpool? Or were clubs all waiting for Guardiola (he's been offered every job possible by the sound of it, including Madrid)?

The biggest clubs in the world are chasing Guardiola because they know he's the best manager in the world.

It's subjective whether Pep is the best. I was a fan of his, i have followed him since he joined Barca and enjoyed what he did there. However, over the years i have come to the realisation that he isn't the best as I once thought.

Klopp is an emotional guy, the type of guy who would pick fish and chips over a fancy Restaurant meal. He picked LFC because it is a romantic club, amongst European managers, LFC has great history, many of them still remember the club's achievements in Europe.

He was wanted by Chelsea and Bayern this season, he chose LFC because it proves a similar challenge to Dortmund. He could have waited for a big club to come and the offers would have come. That's pretty obvious. Pep can only be the coach of one club.

I have done something completely against the grain / form / common sense and brought Matt Ritchie in! Anyone else seeing a good player, and potentially complete bargain at 5.4? OK I guess not, feel free to ridicule me below!

This. I'd pay £1m more for alli, let alone the fact they're the same price.

I already have Alli. Other than Alli the midfielders in that price bracket are pretty poor or short term punts, whereas Ritchie should be a guaranteed starter to act as my backup potentially for the season. However I won't defend this selection too much it is a huge punt as Ritchie has not performed as expected to date.

All I will add is that you don't get to be 450k OR without taking the odd risk 😉
