Next up this Monday evening, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

In the wake of his match-winner against Watford last Gameweek and FA Cup goal and assist at Norwich, Sergio Aguero surges to the summit of the Captain Poll with 34% of the vote. A home tie against Everton could propel the Argentine back into the essential bracket, given that the Merseysiders have managed just two clean sheets in their last 14 league matches. Everton’s inability to batten down the hatches also finds Kevin De Bruyne (8%) – who’s produced 16 points in each of his last two home starts – among the top five selections.

Harry Kane occupies the silver-medal berth with 13% of voters taking the plunge. Although Spurs’ premier marksman carded five blanks in his last seven outings, he’s recorded two braces in four home fixtures ahead of Leicester City’s visit and also netted against Claudio Ranieri’s men in yesterday’s cup draw.

With three goals and one assist in two league starts, Diego Costa (10.7) has re-emerged as a contender on the Fantasy market. The Spain international was also amongst the goals in yesterday’s cup win over Scunthorpe and, if he can shrug off the knock that forced him off, could take advantage of a West Bromwich Albion outfit that has notched just one clean sheet in their last 10 match-ups.

Having sealed his return from injury with a couple of recent sub appearances, Dimitri Payet (6%) charts in the top five. Prior to his two-month layoff, the former Marseille playmaker bagged four goals and three assists in eight starts – underlining his capacity for attacking returns before a trip to Bournemouth this Tuesday. Slaven Bilic has revealed he is “99% certain” that Payet will be unleashed from the start at Dean Court, suggesting he could get back amongst the points once again.

Mesut Ozil (5%) and Odion Ighalo (4%) are next in line following their rare blanks in the previous wave of fixtures. The former has contributed to 56% (three goals, 16 assists) of Arsenal’s goals this term and travels to face a Liverpool unit that’s riddled with defensive injuries, while the latter boasts seven goals and two assists in seven outings as Watford gear up for a trip to Southampton

Romelu Lukaku and Riyad Mahrez look real differential candidates for Gameweek 21, with just 2% and 1% of the votes cast respectively. Lukaku is expected to recover from a minor ankle problem in time for Everton’s trip to the Etihad and bagged the winner against City in last week’s Capital One Cup win. Meanwhile, confidence in Mahrez has decreased due to three successive blanks, though the Algerian has still managed five double-figure hauls on his travels ahead of the trip to Tottenham.

Fixture and possible injury I suppose. People are very shortsighted.
Looking at the fixtures I would keep both Kane and Lukakum plus DGW on the horizon.

      agree Kawaii.

Kane Lukaku Aguero could be absolute gold. Though Ighalo still offers insane value at 6.3.

Keep Iggy Shifty since it enables you to build a good defence and midfield.

Watford are playing well. If he was at a top 4 team, people would never sell him.
Happy with Kane, Luka and Iggy. Any injuries I have good midfield and defensive cover.

    Good to go?

    Butland
    Bellerin, Alderweireld, Ward
Payet, Ozil, De Bruyne (v), Mahrez
    Kane, Aguero (c), Ighalo

    (Hennessey; Alli, Wollscheid, Evans)

I'm just trying to play it safe, only chance of winning money this season is winning h2h games and staying in a Last Man Standing league.

Here's a fixture spreadsheet I made to predict and keep track of the blanks and DGWs:

Benching Payet over Alli & Mahrez seems like a confident choice, but I would like some opinions.

Payet has just come back, and has his minutes managed. Alli is a good choice, with Spurs being on form as well as Alli. Mahrez has blanked for a few weeks however people seem to tell me the assumed FPL rule (never bench Mahrez).

    So, who have you benched?

    1. C_G

yeah i'll be getting rid of vardy for a third striker next GW. I'd say bench Alli, because Payet doesnt need too much time to get stuck in the attack

      I'm facing the exact dilemma.

I'm benching Mahrez for the following reason.

      1. Spurs have a great defense which will limit Leicester attack.
      2. Spurs Leicester just played on the FA cup and giving the high scoring result the league game will lie,lay be low scoring.
      3. Vardy is just coming back from minor injury whihc could limit Mahrez's points.
      4. Taking a punt on Payet because I just brought him in.

      1. Waterboyd
        • 11 Years

tbf Mahrez was rested in that FA cup game, so was Alli I think.

Both sides had a weakened lineup, thus unreliable.

I have those three with Payet on bench and hope Lukaku will be rested.

As Payet is likely to start, I'm now considering to bench Alli because I also have Kane.

Leicester will be tough to beat. They haven't conceded much as The Cherries.

Norwich 4/1 to get relegated anyone?

Looks like great value to me. Only 3/6 teams can realistically be relegated... Newcastle and Swansea are probably stronger than Norwich. Bournemouth are about 6/1. But with Norwich, they're completely hopeless away from home and the majority of their important and winnable games to come are away.

Norwich have tightened up in defense.
I think Villa, S' land and Newcastle will go down.
Bournemouth will stay up because of their attack, and the new signing could be key.

yeah isee that point, i've wildcarded and got Rangel and Simpson on my bench, rangel could be a better prospect but that damn Toby has a chance to knock one in with every corner almost, i'm comfortable playing him.

      1. Spurs have a great defense which will limit Leicester attack.
      2. Spurs Leicester just played on the FA cup and giving the high scoring result the league game will likely be lower due to familiarity. Defenders have advantages seeing the same attacking scheme.

haha yeah i read this before man, it's good reasoning, however i will never live down benching mahrez for his haul that one time, can see the game being end to end stuff.
It does make sense but i think i'd rather bench Alli overall, makes better sense to me i suppose, and if the game is lower scoring like you predict, then Alli would likely be the same as benching Mahrez in a way.

Having Kane shouldn't / doesn't support the idea of benching Alli. If Alli scores points he scores points, having Kane is irrelevant.
Basically it's total guesswork which of the 3 to bench, but i would choose Payet

Thauvin doesn't keep possession enough and needs a year of hard work and shaping.
Aarons is the future, seen the lad play in the cup and he had so many strings to his bow, just needs to put his dead down and learn.

With Jagielka back, I don't think Everton will be as bad at the back any more. Even before that, in their last two games against PL opponents (City and Spurs), there were signs of turning our defensive problems around - we looked much more organised in defence and only conceded one goal on each occasion obviously.

    1. Reiko
      • 10 Years

No offense but Everton's defense was way better under Moyes. Now even with Jagielka they still concede almost every game. Coleman being injured on top of that.

Yes that's true, we've lost some defensive resilience but gained some attacking flair. My point was more that some of the recent instability at the back should be corrected by the return of Jagielka so maybe don't expect a massively high scoring game.

Having said that, Aguero/KDB is still a tempting option for captain in my team in the lack of other strong contenders haha.

I used my WC to get Payet and decided to bench him over Mahrez (based on some of my reasoning). Payet is someone who will be in my team till GW38 if fit, so have to get him now before price rises whether I decide to play him or not.

    Lloris --- henessey
Souare (avl) Darmian (new) Moreno (ARS) ---- simpson (tot) dawson (che)
ozil mahrez alli mane --- ramsey
    kaku kun kane

    - not a good defence this gw but not whether to get rid of a defender and if so, who?
    - benching headache..currently on ramsey as i dont want to start 2 ars mids vs pool away
    - if kaku is out then ramsey will come on

    A: darmian/dawson/moreno >> williams
    B: mane >> payet / ayew
C: save FT..and bench one of ramsey/mane..both play if kaku is out injured

    Morning.

    A. Start Rose and have Ward first sub
    B. Start Ward
    C. Rose to Williams for a -4

( little extra info, planning Ramsey to Payet next week so C is an option even though its a hit for a defender as really need to shift Rose)

    Thanks

    Sup guys, you alright?

Quick advice, I'm playing with 3 defenders. So which 2 defenders to bench from Smalling, Toby, Ward, Kolarov and Simpson?

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks mate... I think it will be easier for ManCity to have a clean sheet than to Spurrs, am I wrong?

I'm thinking there will be goals from both sides on the Spuers-Leicester game, what you reckon?

hard to tell without knowing the fitness of vardy/lukaku whether to play kolarov or toby.

but yeah i'd definitely play smalling and ward, and not play simpson.

toby and kolarov both a chance for attacking returns as well so unsure on who to go with lol good luck!

So Ive been considering Lukaku> Kun all week, but Im looking at form and fixtures and see no logic in doing that.

Kane > Kun again fixtures in Kanes favor while form both are pretty even.

So other than the fear of not owning him is there any reason to disrupt

Kane Ighalo Lukaku for Kun when defending a lead?

im currently on Lukaku Kane Aguero but this point is interesting as long term that is too much cash for up front and i will want Sanchez

Ighalo is crazy value (as is Deeny to be fair) so for me it will be

Ighalo Aguero plus one of Lukaku and Kane is where i plan to end up

Long term i think i will shift Kane to enable Sanchez in my midfield and get Alli to be involved in Spurs attack. Its a difficult choice!

In 2 minds about Ighalo vs Deeney. Ighalo definitely has the bigger goal threat but Deeney at 5.2m on pens is real tempting given just how annoying Watford are in the box.

Deeney also has abit more experience but in that same breath, very much a team player and likely to drop deep to defend if necessary - leaving Ighalo up front to continue to harass and attack on the break.

Agreed on all fronts, once Sanchez is back the Kane Kun Kaku frontline wont be feasible. Lukaku has a 0.5 involvement for everton goals, while Alli seems enough "coverage" of spurs.

Should I just give it more time to see which of Kane/Kaku to shift out and to see if Kun is actually back?

I did Kaku to Kun with an eye to do Kane to Kaku in 2 weeks when fixtures turn again, and should be 100% healthy again.

Hey DZ, who would you captain:

    A) Ighalo (sou) More consistent and involved in more goals. Overall, Watford have been a stronger attacking side in the last 4.

    B) KDB (EVE) coming up against a team that has conceded the third LEAST away from home (Not as easy as everyone imagines) Involved in less goals but is a monster at hom.
