Next up this Monday evening, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

In the wake of his match-winner against Watford last Gameweek and FA Cup goal and assist at Norwich, Sergio Aguero surges to the summit of the Captain Poll with 34% of the vote. A home tie against Everton could propel the Argentine back into the essential bracket, given that the Merseysiders have managed just two clean sheets in their last 14 league matches. Everton’s inability to batten down the hatches also finds Kevin De Bruyne (8%) – who’s produced 16 points in each of his last two home starts – among the top five selections.

Harry Kane occupies the silver-medal berth with 13% of voters taking the plunge. Although Spurs’ premier marksman carded five blanks in his last seven outings, he’s recorded two braces in four home fixtures ahead of Leicester City’s visit and also netted against Claudio Ranieri’s men in yesterday’s cup draw.

With three goals and one assist in two league starts, Diego Costa (10.7) has re-emerged as a contender on the Fantasy market. The Spain international was also amongst the goals in yesterday’s cup win over Scunthorpe and, if he can shrug off the knock that forced him off, could take advantage of a West Bromwich Albion outfit that has notched just one clean sheet in their last 10 match-ups.

Having sealed his return from injury with a couple of recent sub appearances, Dimitri Payet (6%) charts in the top five. Prior to his two-month layoff, the former Marseille playmaker bagged four goals and three assists in eight starts – underlining his capacity for attacking returns before a trip to Bournemouth this Tuesday. Slaven Bilic has revealed he is “99% certain” that Payet will be unleashed from the start at Dean Court, suggesting he could get back amongst the points once again.

Mesut Ozil (5%) and Odion Ighalo (4%) are next in line following their rare blanks in the previous wave of fixtures. The former has contributed to 56% (three goals, 16 assists) of Arsenal’s goals this term and travels to face a Liverpool unit that’s riddled with defensive injuries, while the latter boasts seven goals and two assists in seven outings as Watford gear up for a trip to Southampton

Romelu Lukaku and Riyad Mahrez look real differential candidates for Gameweek 21, with just 2% and 1% of the votes cast respectively. Lukaku is expected to recover from a minor ankle problem in time for Everton’s trip to the Etihad and bagged the winner against City in last week’s Capital One Cup win. Meanwhile, confidence in Mahrez has decreased due to three successive blanks, though the Algerian has still managed five double-figure hauls on his travels ahead of the trip to Tottenham.

If I was the president of the football federation of Pakistan, I might just sack the NT manager after his ballon d'or choice, on the basis that he apparently has not followed football for about a year. Only if he had dedicated all his time to his own team and its direct opponents, I would forgive him, but that lack of general knowledge on what is happening in his professional field would be at least alarming.

Oh, the word with which the Pakistani people I've known refer to themselves? Hardly a slur, never a racial - Pakistani isn't even a race, dude!

It's funny how a shorthands for European/American nationalities are widely in use, but those for a non-European/American nationality are "racial slurs", apparently for any but the people of those nationalities themselves.

I made a bit of search on it as well, and noticed that it is actually in a massively racist use in the UK. But would you have imagined that? I haven't heard of such pejorative and generalising use elsewhere, nor do I find marks of it on internet.

Lol. Personally, I'd be fine with just correcting that I'm not a Brit. But yeah, if Pakistani guys used that as a general, insulting reference to all Europeans, and discriminate against me on basis that I'm "a Brit", yes, I would find it both racist and insulting. However, that is not at all equivalent of what I did above, and if he only referred to Brits by that word in a merely nationality-descriptive way (equivalent to what I did), it would hardly be an insult as such.

I did not read the follow up post I only read the original post. What's racist in one country may well not be racist in another country, maybe he didn't realise he was causing offence to some people, I'm sure a brief explanation that that word is deemed racist to some people would have been more appropriate than to just come out and accuse someone of racism, sure if it happens again then you have a right to make a big scene over it.

If that word is a slur in England, it is because

                    1) in England it is thought negative to be Pakistani in the first place.

                    2) It is used also for people who are not Pakistani (South Asian origin, which includes many non-Pakistani origins). E.g. it would not make it any better if you referred to an Indian person as "Pakistani" instead.

But don't project those attitudes to me. There's nothing racist about what I said. The manager actually is Pakistani and I in no way inferred that it would be somehow negative thing. It's the equivalent of calling a Swedish person a Swede. It does distinguish him by his nationality, and I wouldn't mind if we didn't do so, but it's a bit hard when we're talking about _national_ football teams here.

You should really get over that racism of yours and not blame the other, more free-minded people for it instead insteadof forcing us your formal ways to round them that are, ultimately, racist in themselves. Btw, it's funny it's all okay for the English to call Americans "yankees" or French "frogs", or use other actual slurs.

Australians have no problem with being called Aussies, New Zealanders have no problem with being called Kiwis, the English don't seem to mind being called Poms. Maybe we're just not precious.

If I heard someone say that, I'd presume the guy that owned the shop was from Pakistan, nothing more than that.

Yeah, that's what I'd presume as well, but apparently there's a chance that it is meant racistically and the shop owner might not even be from Pakistan.

@nzreds: I, too, have only heard it used by the Pakistani.

anyway, the problem seems to be only that of the English having taken the word for a racist use, and then banning the word after they had realised what they had done. I find that rather silly, and refuse to take any responsibility on it. But ok, the poms can keep their irrational ways. 😉

Shut your face, Engie. No. damn. Aussie? Ah feck. Shortening words doesn't really have the same belittling effect i thought they wud.

I once sneezed next to someone from Kyrgyzstan and everybody thought I'd used a racist slur.

That's an absolute load of b**lloks mate. 'Get over that racism of yours' is naive and shows a complete lack of awareness and understanding of racism, as does the rest if your post. It seems your original remark was unintentially racist, but a simple apology would suffice. Don't try and explain away racism through logic. It's clearly a topic you don't understand.

I want to implement a fluid interchange between Kane/Kaku/Kun/Ighalo... 4 forwards are better than 3, no?

      Ha 🙂

I'm currently with Aguero Kane Ighalo with the plan of doing Kane->Lukaku before the sexy Toffee fixtures.

          For me it's Kane->Lukaka

I love Ighalo too much, and I'm anticipating the need for Alexis/Hazard funds. One will surely hit form, maybe both.

Yes ighalo allows Sanchez without getting rid of kdb which is a huge bonus. But if I keep Kane and I can just have payet instead of Sanchez or kdb which isn't a bad alternative. Going to be interesting to see who will be the most needed.

The need for Hazard is something that shouldnt be anticipated Giggs based on the season. But Alexis does worry me. Have no way of getting him in without taking multiple hits or losing players i dont want to lose.

Yes I've given up on hazard. I held him for way too long earlier in the season out of hope/expectation he would turn it around but it never happened. There's a chance he regains some form after his fit under Guus but who knows, and even if so he won't score a boatload of goals.

It could come down to Sanchez vs kdb which is a worry. I sold kdb earlier in the season to bring in lukaku and he scored 16 points, then Sanchez got injured the week after and I brought kdb straight back in ha. Not sure who id choose if I had to right now, will wait to see how Sanchez does before making any rash decisions.
