Next up this Monday evening, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

In the wake of his match-winner against Watford last Gameweek and FA Cup goal and assist at Norwich, Sergio Aguero surges to the summit of the Captain Poll with 34% of the vote. A home tie against Everton could propel the Argentine back into the essential bracket, given that the Merseysiders have managed just two clean sheets in their last 14 league matches. Everton’s inability to batten down the hatches also finds Kevin De Bruyne (8%) – who’s produced 16 points in each of his last two home starts – among the top five selections.

Harry Kane occupies the silver-medal berth with 13% of voters taking the plunge. Although Spurs’ premier marksman carded five blanks in his last seven outings, he’s recorded two braces in four home fixtures ahead of Leicester City’s visit and also netted against Claudio Ranieri’s men in yesterday’s cup draw.

With three goals and one assist in two league starts, Diego Costa (10.7) has re-emerged as a contender on the Fantasy market. The Spain international was also amongst the goals in yesterday’s cup win over Scunthorpe and, if he can shrug off the knock that forced him off, could take advantage of a West Bromwich Albion outfit that has notched just one clean sheet in their last 10 match-ups.

Having sealed his return from injury with a couple of recent sub appearances, Dimitri Payet (6%) charts in the top five. Prior to his two-month layoff, the former Marseille playmaker bagged four goals and three assists in eight starts – underlining his capacity for attacking returns before a trip to Bournemouth this Tuesday. Slaven Bilic has revealed he is “99% certain” that Payet will be unleashed from the start at Dean Court, suggesting he could get back amongst the points once again.

Mesut Ozil (5%) and Odion Ighalo (4%) are next in line following their rare blanks in the previous wave of fixtures. The former has contributed to 56% (three goals, 16 assists) of Arsenal’s goals this term and travels to face a Liverpool unit that’s riddled with defensive injuries, while the latter boasts seven goals and two assists in seven outings as Watford gear up for a trip to Southampton

Romelu Lukaku and Riyad Mahrez look real differential candidates for Gameweek 21, with just 2% and 1% of the votes cast respectively. Lukaku is expected to recover from a minor ankle problem in time for Everton’s trip to the Etihad and bagged the winner against City in last week’s Capital One Cup win. Meanwhile, confidence in Mahrez has decreased due to three successive blanks, though the Algerian has still managed five double-figure hauls on his travels ahead of the trip to Tottenham.

youre capping willian and i would play alli over willian lol . Willian is not a gr8 pick imo especially not for captaaincy as you are basically relying on set piece threat for goals. This means you should never captain as the chances of chelsea scoring set pieces gainst weaker teams ( fixtures where you wanna captain ) are not significantly higher then against weaker. teams( in fact against wba you could argue that they are better than average at defending set pieces

    vardy, kane, lukaku

    Subs:
    Myhill, barkely, williams, o'shea

      Cresswell in for Dawson
Yaya to KDB if you can afford it
Vardy -> Aguero or Ighalo if you are stugllyinh.

Barkley lost form would swap him for Payet or Willian.
O'shea or Williams for BOU defender.
Myhill downgrade to Rudd for extra cash.

id lose kolorov for ivano or dwason for zouma bottom line defintely get chelsea defender. Also would lose vardy kane for ighalo and kun and get alli over barkley for spurs 'cover'.

@Andy Further discussion and educating people who clearly need it about racism is probably slightly more useful than asking "should I start X or Y". But it would have probably been a fruitless task

I do get that people want to discuss things like this but at the end of the day the comment was removed and that's the end of it really.

That conversation was about to go round and round in circles and that's where trouble starts - as you say, a fruitless task.

What do you think of Kun in for Kane?
I won't do it till the next GW as i dont want to take a hit,
According to FFFix both players have a projected score of 28 over the next 5 GW's
My other forwards are Lukaku & Vardy, but dont think its worth all the transfers to get Kun in.
So would you do it, bearing in mind Kane has sunderland up next?

83% is not very good for a defensive CM. You should compare it to his team mates, anyway, and if you do that, you see that every other CM has got a significantly better pass completion, Ki boasting a 91.2% in a similar role.

Ki is one of PL's best passers , so not sure why you would compare Shelvey to him 😕

Just checking some passing accuracies , all DM's around 80-90%..Matic is 83% and Shelvey is the attacking DM..meaning the Cazorla role

Because they're team mates! Team's style and tactics have a great influence on pass completion of individual players, so you'd do better comparing a player to his team mates first.

Also, how much of that 83% is short passes? Scholes made a career out of that!

Not a fan of pass completion as it can be misleading.

Actually, he hits a lot of long balls, the most in his team. But that may not be a good thing either, if he can't complete them.

Ki makes less long passes, but also almost never misses it when he does. Same with Cork, although he's less impressive than Ki.

All in all, Swans might just do better without him in their lineup, and same time he's actually the player they really can cash on.

I'm more and more convinced this was good business by them.

Swansea don't need Shelvey as Cork and Ki are (way) better but Shelvey is an upgrade on Anita and past-his-prime Tiote

You have to look at how each individual team plays to assess players pass completion rate. Matic wins it and makes a short pass to Fabregas who is the main chance creator in the team.

Ki makes a short pass to Shelvey who looks to create a chance. That's how Swansea have played this season.

Not quite true. See, for example, the Norwich match.

Ki made actually most of his passes forward, 78 out of 114, whereas Shelvey playing next to him passed backward 52 times out of his 91 passes, and also a higher percentage (32%) to the final third than Shelvey (24%).

Similarly, against ManU when Shelvey didn't play, Ki played the ball upfield most of the time, and kept the 92% pass completion nevertheless.

Against Villa they had about the same rates. It's really only true in the Bournemouth match, of the recent, where Shelvey played behind the striker.

His defending needs a lot of improvement as well. Definitely he should play in a more attacking role, but then, that passing isn't too impressive for that either.

I'd imagine he won't end up being a regular first team player in the long run, unless Newcastle really get relegated. And then that £12M is just too much.

Swans made a fine profit on a player who hardly improved at all during his time there, and had a bit of difficulty to justify his place for any other reason than the lack of options.

If you watch him, his style of playing is very much Gerrard-esque, obviously lacks the shooting and passing accuracy.

Yeah, but to be honest, I'd argue that Gerrard's style, or his lack of understanding of any serious tactical play making, was a significant hindrance on the top level: he almost every time tried to hit a long pass or shoot from distance, usually ending up just giving the ball to the opponent.

Hmm... Shelvey scored 5 goals from outside the box in his big season 2013/2014. That was from only 64 shots outside the box. Almost 8% conversion. But when you look at his career long shot conversion, it's close to 4%, almost at the margins of bang average. I wonder whether it is actually about to regress to the plain mean, and that one season just still skewing his stats big time. If you excluded that season, his rate would be rather poor 2.3%. Which means that he's essentially wasting attacks with his 2+ long shots/90.
