Next up this Monday evening, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

In the wake of his match-winner against Watford last Gameweek and FA Cup goal and assist at Norwich, Sergio Aguero surges to the summit of the Captain Poll with 34% of the vote. A home tie against Everton could propel the Argentine back into the essential bracket, given that the Merseysiders have managed just two clean sheets in their last 14 league matches. Everton’s inability to batten down the hatches also finds Kevin De Bruyne (8%) – who’s produced 16 points in each of his last two home starts – among the top five selections.

Harry Kane occupies the silver-medal berth with 13% of voters taking the plunge. Although Spurs’ premier marksman carded five blanks in his last seven outings, he’s recorded two braces in four home fixtures ahead of Leicester City’s visit and also netted against Claudio Ranieri’s men in yesterday’s cup draw.

With three goals and one assist in two league starts, Diego Costa (10.7) has re-emerged as a contender on the Fantasy market. The Spain international was also amongst the goals in yesterday’s cup win over Scunthorpe and, if he can shrug off the knock that forced him off, could take advantage of a West Bromwich Albion outfit that has notched just one clean sheet in their last 10 match-ups.

Having sealed his return from injury with a couple of recent sub appearances, Dimitri Payet (6%) charts in the top five. Prior to his two-month layoff, the former Marseille playmaker bagged four goals and three assists in eight starts – underlining his capacity for attacking returns before a trip to Bournemouth this Tuesday. Slaven Bilic has revealed he is “99% certain” that Payet will be unleashed from the start at Dean Court, suggesting he could get back amongst the points once again.

Mesut Ozil (5%) and Odion Ighalo (4%) are next in line following their rare blanks in the previous wave of fixtures. The former has contributed to 56% (three goals, 16 assists) of Arsenal’s goals this term and travels to face a Liverpool unit that’s riddled with defensive injuries, while the latter boasts seven goals and two assists in seven outings as Watford gear up for a trip to Southampton

Romelu Lukaku and Riyad Mahrez look real differential candidates for Gameweek 21, with just 2% and 1% of the votes cast respectively. Lukaku is expected to recover from a minor ankle problem in time for Everton’s trip to the Etihad and bagged the winner against City in last week’s Capital One Cup win. Meanwhile, confidence in Mahrez has decreased due to three successive blanks, though the Algerian has still managed five double-figure hauls on his travels ahead of the trip to Tottenham.

according to ffx stats the number of people that own all three is about 0.7 % overall and 0.9 % in the top 10k. probably doesn't include all the transfers that happened since last gw

    Kun(c) Kane Ighalo

    Rudd PVA Stan Dawson

Punty I know but Ayew and mane have 2 home gws and I'm trying to catch up having mahrez or Ozil isn't an option even though they seem fixture proof

Guess its time to say goodbye to Vardy. Want Costa but his injury risk worries me.
    A) Vardy and Sterling -> Aguero and £4.4 mid (Stanislas, Watson, Barry etc...)
    B) Vardy and Barkley -> Ighalo and Payet (£1.7m ITB)

Why? Leicester has failed to score in their last three games and are up against the best defense in the league.

        1. Arctic monkeys
          10 years, 9 months ago

Failing to score in the last three games does not necessary mean they'll fail in the fourth. and Mahrez is the kind of player that get the double digit hauls.

          1. Royal5
            10 years, 9 months ago

It doesn't. But it shows a lack in form and Spurs rearly let in more than one goal, so stats would indicate that there is a small chance Mahrez would get a haul in this game at WHL. You have to put him up against the player you are considering benching him for though. Who's more likely to get points. Personally I think there's a bigger chance Alli will outscore him.

If he scored that penalty last game we wouldn't be having this discussion at all. he could have easily scored 10 points last GW and your argument of failing to score in 3 GWs wouldn't be Valid.

They've played 6 games in the last 4 weeks and faced Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, City and Spurs in that time. I hardly think that a tough run in a short span of time is indicative of a problem so much as it is just a stylistic change given the opposition and pile-up.

          1. Royal5

Big question here. Who is Spurs' first choice left back now? Davies could be a steal at 4.1.

    1. Ayew Serious
      10 years, 9 months ago

      Davies but not nailed

    2. Reiko

It will keep shuffling. Hence would not recommend either

Last week it was Davies, next week it could be Rose. Your guess is as good as mine.

Opening a can of worms there, much rather Rangel at 4.1

This. Constant rotation at LB it seems. Been like that ever since Poch arrived

Shame, could be a great option but rotation is never good for FPL prospects. I'll have to avoid.

Pretty stuck on what transfer/s to make this week. Have .4 itb and have 2 FT's.

    Butland McCarthy
    Bellerin Toby Moreno Cedric Simpson
    KDB Mahrez Ozil Ali Britton
    Kane Lukaku Aguero

Any ideas on what to do?

    Was thinking Bellerin to Zouma/Azpi/Williams?

    Thanks in advance

    1. Reiko

Cedric/Moreno to West Ham defense maybe. Williams can also do atm

Bellerin out is made when you have Cedric, Britton, and Moreno. Look there first.

Want to keep Moreno for the DGW and Cedric has good fixtures upcoming. May swap him for Williams or Rangel. Thanks

I owned Cedric for a while, and even when he's healthy he's not guaranteed a start or even 60 minutes (dare I bring up Cedric-Gate). I'd swap him out for Williams, a WHU defender or a Palace defender.

Not sure what to do with my 1FT :/

    Cech
    Belllerin Kolarov Bertrand
    Sterling Ozil Mahrez KDB
    Lukaku Vardy Ighalo

    Bench: McCarthy Mane Dier Evans

    Any help appreciated!

Can use -4 and try for Sterling & Vardy --> Aguero & Alli if possible. Sterling always gets the boot first if manager feels team is not playing upto the mark.

    Butland
    Bellerin Toby Kolarov
    KdB Ozil Mahrez Barkley
    Aguero Kane Ighalo

    Myhill Huth Nyom Westwood

Not enough $, short by 0.4 :/ I might do Kolarov to Cresswell, so that I could make that move next week.

Really can't decide which one to bench in this attack. Help would be hugely appreciated...

    Arnautovic - Ozil - Mahrez - KDB - Alli

    Aguero - Lukaku - Kane

      10 years, 9 months ago

      Lukaku imo

    2. Reedy
      10 years, 9 months ago

Probably Arnie...though you've doubtless brought him in with this fixture in mind. It does at least give you great cover if you need someone off your bench.

I have to say, I'm enjoying seeing all these people selling Lukaku to get Kun. Statistically the most efficient attacking team in the league so far this season, scoring a goal for every 5.4 chances they create.

      1. sinik
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        10 years, 9 months ago

Of course a streak is realistically only SO sustainable but he's had a little over 50% goal involvement all season (54% first half, 57% second half) so I wouldn't say we're dependent on goals for points.

He's also created an impressive 21 chances in the second half of the season.

        1.
          10 years, 9 months ago

No but when the team's goals are outstripping xG by 11 goals, that's really worrying as goals and assists could be drying up together any minute now.
