For the first time we will focus on the last two Gameweeks in the same article. Also for the first time, we will use tables, so it will be easier to compare Gameweek 24 and 25’s statistics. As the analysis shows it was was a pair of Gameweeks that left our band of veterans, who are made up of FPL champions, Hall of Fame leaders and FFScout moderators and contributors, with little to smile about.
TRANSFERS
Transfers by position:
In Gameweek 25, the veterans averaged 1.35 transfers per team, a lot more than usual. Kevin De Bruyne’s injury prior to Gameweek 24 was the main reason why so many were focused on transferring midfielders. Romelu Lukaku was also an injury doubt for Gameweek 25, and Jamie Vardy scored 13 points the week before, so in the last Gameweek, veterans mostly transferred their strikers. That didn’t turn out very well though because Lukaku scored and grabbed maximum bonus points, while Vardy blanked.
Transfers In:
Alexis Sanchez was the most popular transfer target amongst our veterans. He recovered from a long-term injury and fitted a key criterion of many of the veterans of being a player with a strong pedigree of success from previous seasons. As well as strong recent form, Jamie Vardy and Virgil van Dijk were also popular targets as Leicester and Southempton do not have blank fixtures in Gameweeks 27 or 30. This shows that veterans have a keen eye on long-term planning when making their moves.
Transfers Out:
Kevin De Bruyne had a huge ownership amongst the veterans before the injury, almost 71%. And now, after Gameweek 25, no one owns him. Wily veterans do not rest on their laurels when it comes to long-term injury victims.
CAPTAINS
Sergio Aguero was also the most popular captain choice overall (22.10% in Gameweek 24, 18.20% in Gameweek 25) was well as amongst top 10,00- ranked teams (65.10% in Gameweek 24, 40.00% in Gameweek 25). It will be very tough for our veterans to climb up the rankings now with Sergio Aguero no longer a differential. Could future success lie in veterans taking a gamble and placing the armband elsewhere?
MOST POPULAR PLAYERS
(Top Starting players)
In Gameweek 23 when Dele Alli scored 13 points, 30% of veterans benched the Spurs midfielder. They learned from that mistake, and in the next Gameweek, when he had another double-digit score, just 7% denied him a starting berth.
The veterans’ faith in Riyad Mahrez was also rewarded in the last Gameweek. Only 16.67% of veterans decide to bench the Algerian. However, a far lower proportion (5.30%) of managers overall made the same mistake.
OVERALL RANKINGS
Average Points
Over the two weeks covered the veterans’ average was lower than the top 10,000 average; in fact, the overall average was also higher in Gameweek 24.
Average Overall Position
After Gameweek 23, the veterans’ average overall position was 95,626. And now, two weeks later it is 54,872 places below that. They didn’t captain the wrong player in Aguero, but their saviour has now become template and can no longer dig them out of a hole. Another factor in the veterans’ slump is the strong displays of players they are not so keen on. Ross Barkley’s brace in Gameweek 24 was particularly damaging for the veterans due to his high overall ownership and strong showing among top 10,000 managers.
