Our usual Saturday morning scour for some overlooked options brings Palace’s and United’s wide men to the fore. We also call upon the services of Sunderland’s top scorer as Big Sam looks to get one over his former side West Ham at Upton Park this lunchtime.

Yannick Bolasie

Having been sidelined since December with a calf injury, Yannick Bolasie (6.0) made his return to the field in Crystal Palace’s FA Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday, emerging in the second half for an 18-minute cameo. Prior to being ruled out, Bolasie bagged three goals and an assist in his last six league appearances, whereas in his nine-Gameweek absence, the Eagles have floundered on the attacking front – recording a pitiable four goals – so Alan Pardew will be desperate to reinstate the mercurial winger ahead of a trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Comparing the league’s full roster of midfielders in terms of their last four matches, Bolasie ranks third for attempts (15), joint-second for shots inside the box (nine) and joint-top for shots on target (nine), underlining his potential to flourish as a mid-priced differential. Bolasie was criticised for his poor finishing last term but has sharpened up that facet of his game this season, almost doubling his shot-conversion rate (5.8% to 10.3%).

In the wake of their morale-boosting win at White Hart Lane, Palace will fancy their chances of breaching a Baggies back line that’s mustered just three clean sheets in their previous 16 outings. Furthermore, Bolasie will certainly source encouragement from the revelation that West Brom have conceded the joint-second-most big chances (25) in home matches.

Memphis Depay

Memphis Depay (7.8) offered a snapshot of his manifest talents during Manchester United’s 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland, netting a driven strike and bamboozling the opposing full-backs with his explosive injections of pace and balletic footwork. In light of Wayne Rooney’s absence and Anthony Martial’s switch to the lone-striker berth, Depay would’ve expected to line up against Arsenal on Sunday. Now that Martial looks likely to sit out that head-to-head with a hamstring complaint, the Red Devils’ Dutch starlet could be their prime offensive threat at Old Trafford.

Despite clocking just 1109 minutes so far this campaign, Depay has chalked up just three fewer attempts (39 to 43) and one attempt shot on target (14 to 15) than Man United’s top shooter, Juan Mata. Clearly, the former PSV Eindhoven recruit has suffered from the second-worst shot-conversion rate (5.1%) among his midfield team-mates, yet his two goals in as many European starts over the past week suggests the tide is turning and will surely boost his confidence.

Although the Gunners have kept it tight at the back of late (two goals conceded in four), they’ve been far from impenetrable on their travels this season, shipping three goals to Liverpool and four to Southampton since Gameweek 18. As for United, their drive to win at all costs in pursuit of a Champions League berth could engender a more swashbuckling approach that’s conducive to attacking returns.

Jermain Defoe

Following a trio of eye-catching performances that culminated in a 2-1 win over Manchester United, Sunderland have courted our attention on the attacking front. As the Black Cats top scorer with 10 goals, Jermain Defoe (5.1) serves as an enticing pick-up in a Gameweek where highly owned forwards like Romelu Lukaku (35% ownership) and Sergio Aguero (29%) are facing blanks. Moreover, Wahbi Khazri – who notched eight key passes in first two starts – is shaping up to be the perfect foil to Sunderland’s poacher.

Defoe doesn’t chart high among his counterparts for attempts (44) this season, but he’s profited from clinical finishing: no forward that’s tallied over 1000 minutes of pitch time boasts a superior shot-conversion rate (22.4%). Prior to a road encounter against West Ham United, it’s also worth noting that seven of the diminutive frontman’s 10 goals have arrived in away fixtures.

Like Defoe, the Wearsiders as a whole have travelled well, ranking eighth for goals (17) and second for shot-conversion rate (13.5%). Indeed, Sam Allardyce’s squad netted seven time in their previous trio of away match-ups, which bodes well for a trip to the Boleyn Ground. Looking beyond that tussle, Sunderland play host to Palace’s generous defence, so there’s definitely scope for Defoe to embark on another purple patch.

Has anyone else transferred Alexis in rather than out this week?

I'm very dull as a manager but the stars have aligned for him this weekend - needed a 2 week punt on someone to cover the gap between Firmino out (now) and Silva in (GW29). He has been getting in good positions and getting shots away but couldn't hit a barn door at the moment. Still he has so much quality and against a depleted ManU and Swa next week I can foresee some sort of haul..

transfer in Depay, looked in great touch on Thursday. Could be on pens too if Herrera's not on the field, two home fixtures in ARS, WAT and then wba, and Arsenal have not won at OT in almost a decade. Made the exact same Firmino to Depay transfer myself.

One question for you lads: would you start Antonio if you had him?
If I don't and I don't sell Firmino I'm gonna play 5 defenders (Fuchs, Wollscheid, Toby, Cresswell and Ward). I'm not sure about his minutes with all these attacking options West Ham have and I can see some clean sheets this week.

i dont think ive ever started more than three defenders. i hear theres an option to only start 2, you should do that

      1. Arteta

It would be my first time too. It's right the opposite of AoA, Kun and Firmino blank and Antonio's place in starting 11 is under threat. I really don't want a cameo and 1 point.

the general wisdom is that you would be crazy to play 5 defenders and equally crazy to bench an attacker with such a plum fixture.

However the general wisdom has let a lot of people down this year. I reckon your plan makes sense for this week.

it should pay off. Not handsomely of course - you're basically playing Ward over Antonio so unless Ward miraculously scores..

There's still plenty of time to make changes. I may sell Firmino for someone and then bench both Ward and Antonio. We'll see.

Top of the page - how excitement..

Question 2 - many or most have triple Spurs at the moment. Usually Alderweireld/Alli/Kane sometimes Eriksen instead of Alli.

Costa is looking good at the moment and I can't justify getting rid of Aguero for any length of time for him. Kane was playing great a month or two back but hasn't been pulling up trees lately - although he has kept scoring its been a few peno's mostly.

Is it worth considering Kane>Costa and then getting in Eriksen to triple Spurs for GW30??

I took a 2 week punt on Costa by getting rid of Kun. Will get kun back before gw29.

Their fixtures justify the short term switch

      Costa - sou, NOR

      Kun - blank, liv

    A) Alli - 40% ownership and against a not bad Swansea side at home.

    A) Firmino to Arnie
    B) Firmino to Shaqiri

    E) Don't take a hit and play with 10 players but Firmino/Moreno with 2 blanks and 2 tricky fixtures remain in the team.

      D. I know it seems a bit sideways, but i looked at at as 'will fuchs get me more points than simpson over the next few weeks?' I was intending to play a leic defender from gw27-30/anyway.

Fair enough but for me with 10 players playing this week and Firmino having further blank and reduced role in Liverpool attack, getting a stoke mid who could flourish next 2 gameweeks feels more enticing than added points fuchs will get over simpson. Ofcourse I see where you are coming from and hence have considered that option among the 5 I have in front of me. Thanks

No Arsenal mid should be leaving for Eriksen. Definitely not Ozil.

I will surely think of removing one of the arsenal mids for eriksen. Which one would be difficult to say but I won't touch Ozil in the form he has been all season

      Oh, tricky.

I would lose Westwood and play 3-5-2 this week, but not sure who would fall in your order bracket.

Get someone who has a game gw30

I agree with this, possibly you have enough for zaha? Can't remember how much Westwood is

      2. @FPLMason
        • 13 Years
        10 years, 25 days ago

Considered losing westwood in order to bring in Alli, but I had to bring in a 4.3 defender which is not feasible atm...

Only way I could get in that extra midfielder who has attacking potential is doing Sanchez and Westwood ---> Alli and Siggy for example.

I'll post something on the next page. Thanks Evs for the input!

Mahrez or Payet or Vardy (safe) for Captian.

But Mahrez have scored only 3 goals at home all season & no pen now.

Payet also scored 3 goals at home all season.

    Which left me with Vardy.

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK IS BETTER OPTION & A DIFFERENTIAL ALSO???

    Help!

Stick with this team and roll FT? Or do A) Wanyama > Arnie and bench a defender (VVD?) B) Bring in a LEI defender (for who?)

    Foster
    Wolly Nyom VVD Cresswell
Payet Mahrez (c) Alli Ozil (Wanyama)
