In the first of two articles, we focus on the double Gameweek 33 teams to assess the merits of acquiring their chief protagonists.

Crystal Palace and Everton collide in midweek at Selhurst Park but, before that, have weekend meetings with Norwich City and Watford respectively.

Starting at the back, we will scan their squads and offer a verdict on the strongest path for investment, whilst giving a nod to some riskier options for those willing to roll the dice on double Gameweek transfer targets.

Firstly, it’s important to be realistic from the outset – our expectations for defensive acquisitions for this opening double Gameweek are low, and largely dependent on the prospect of attacking returns.

While both the Gameweek 33 candidates follow up with a Gameweek 34 double, the form of both Everton and Palace offers little assurance of clean sheet points.

Everton have gone five without a shut-out, losing four of those matches and shipping eight goals. The Palace prospects appear even dimmer: they have conceded in each of their last 12 league outings.

Despite this, both teams, and Palace in particular, offer targets who are capable of chipping in with priceless goals. Indeed, the Eagles boast the most prolific defender in the Premier League.

While Scott Dann will set us back a hefty price of 5.7, his prowess in the box, coupled with Alan Pardew’s penchant for scripting effective set-plays, makes him worthy of serious consideration.

Dann also represents a secure acquisition. He has missed just a single league match all season and with Pardew’s men scrapping for points, it’s fair to assume that he offers the best chance of lining up in all four matches that make up Gameweek 33 and 34 for Palace. Furthermore, Dann netted Palace’s goal against the Toffees in a 1-1 draw at Goodison earlier in the season.

Should Dann’s price tag be a stretch too far, Damian Delaney (4.3) is on standby to attempt to fill the void. Brought into focus by last weekend’s goal at West Ham, the centre-back can also be a factor at set-plays and actually boasts a stronger CBI (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) per match average than Dann. However, arguably Delaney could be subject to rotation in the fourth fixture at Old Trafford, four days before the Palace FA Cup semi-final with Watford.

Like Delaney, Joel Ward (4.3) is kinder on the budget and has two goals to his name, while Papa Souare can be acquired for just 4.2. Both are options, although with Martin Kelly in reserve, rotation is more of a threat in the full-back area.

There’s no obvious candidate to rival Dann in the Everton camp.

With three goals to his name, Ramiro Funes Mori (5.5) has demonstrated a similar effectiveness at set-plays but was dropped to the bench to make way for the restored John Stones (5.4) at Manchester United on Sunday.

With little security on offer from that pair, it’s left to Phil Jagielka (5.1) to provide us with a stable, if somewhat unexciting option in the Toffees backline. Jagielka looks assured of starts, although with Stones and Mori as options and Everton bereft of motivation in the league, he could even be rested for one of the four double Gameweek encounters.

Seamus Coleman (5.8) could be the key differential on show. Like Everton, the Irishman has suffered a hugely frustrating campaign but has still mustered a goal and three assists in 24 starts. With Leighton Baines seemingly locked in rotation with Bryan Oviedo on the left, risking returns from Coleman’s right-flank raids looks a valid route if you’re hunting unexpected attacking points.

The dearth of assured Everton options in defence certainly promotes keeper Joel Robles (4.3) in our thinking.

The Spaniard, like Palace’s Wayne Hennessey (4.2) resides firmly in the budget bracket and, as a result, appears to offer the optimum route for Toffees cover at the back.

The Watford trip, coupled with a home tie against Southampton in Gameweek 34, look to provide a semblance of clean sheet potential. We can also hope for save points, although surprisingly, Robles has gathered just three in his seven league starts thus far: he averages a save every 47 minutes to Hennessey’s 37 minutes.

When you consider the Gameweek 34 fixtures, Robles’ clean sheet prospects look the stronger of the two and, with Dann and Delaney’s set-piece promise leaning us towards the Palace back four, we’re currently favouring the Everton stopper.

The Top Target

Scott Dann – the most secure option in the Palace rearguard, Dann is a fire and forget option laced with the promise of attacking returns. If you have the funds, his presence at set-plays gives him a goal threat that betters many of the Eagles midfield and attack.

The Differential

Seamus Coleman – an attacking full-back who can promise goals and assists, his key stats, including penalty area touches, are all enhanced from last season’s displays. However, like Everton, his form over the last four Gameweeks has been dismal. A pricey gamble.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who would you bench this week?

    A) Payet (ARS)
    B) Mitrovic (sou)

      Tough that.

I've got a strange feeling Payet's form is about to dry up.

It would mean playing 5 at the back as I'd pretty well have to keep Payet Lanzini and Lukaku.

I'm trying to convince myself this is alright as I'll have the important big hitters (other than Kane)

Manu defence just seems so important..

              DDG/Darlow
              Bell/Sakho/Gabriel/Ward/Simpson
              Sanchez/KDB/Cout/Payet/Lanzini
              Kun/Lukaku/Mitrovic

Just trying to weigh the importance of UTD def vs. attack, so DDG/Robles vs. Martial/Mitrovic essentially. The Martial option allows an extra .1 which lets me bring in PVA for Ward in 35 onward. Otherwise looking at other cheapies but I have a soft spot for PVA.

Not sure how I feel about Mitrovic...

              Thoughts?

Seeing as this is exactly what I'm looking at I feel good about it 😉

Really my worry is GW35. We'll be playing all 5 of those defenders, and that might be the week Gab misses out.

Mitrovic I think is a good enabler and also the focal point of that attack. He's a sacrifice we have to take and who might really pay off

                  Nice rank btw.

I like having a couple of punts, especially for the doubles, so onward Mitrovic! Easy downgrade to Defoe for 37 if need be, or swap to a 3-5-2. I still remember fondly when Matty Phillips scored 20 odd points during his double last year as it sealed my ML. Great stuff.

I don't mind Gabriel. Looking at Arsenal's fixtures from here till the end, it seems you need 3. Sanchez and Bellerin are given the 3rd needs to be cheaper. Fingers crossed he stays in the side.

Cheers it's been a strange year.

You really are on the same line I am. I've looked at Defoe he looks a good GW37 option, though who knows where we'll be by then.

Looking at punts; I think we could maybe look to ditch Payet and double with Firmino. I don't know if Lanzini will cover WHM but Firmino means we can save a transfer in GW35 and Pool really have great fixtures.

Thanks for the response and insight, good luck! 🙂

My first draft had a double up with Firmino in place of KDB, but can't go without the latter for now, especially this week and 35. Really a hedge against Kun not being involved in the scoring for me, because there should be scoring.

Payet has been so good all season, I just have a hard time leaving him out. Certainly an option, but feel Firmino is a bit fragile and might not play as much as we want/need him too with Europa still to play for. Though the same could really be said for KDB and Coutinho as well. Hmmmmmm....

                      Good luck! 🙂

Dislike Gabriel pick, trendy as it is

Ozil & Firmino getting overlooked at the moment.

For week 34 bench boost, I'm all about 15 DGWs, so I'd lost Mahrez and Simpson but I understand the counter camp.

See the budget issues thought and as long as you want Aguero Sanchez & KDB, its tough to do much better than you have it.

      I wouldn't worry too much about DGW33.

I'm not sold on the Manc defence.. today was a horror and, I know it was PSG, they aren't convincing.

A... but barely. Would Iwobi be your only Arsenal attacker?

        Cheers.

Only thing is that Iwobi probably won't play the rest of the games (surely), however I have a good midfield, so shouldn't be a problem? Unless, of course, he's benched for a gw34 game.

Sanchez and Bellerin the others from Arsenal.

Yeah bb 34. Taken a hit every week 31 -34 so this needs to work. Even with courtois in still only 9 in 35 but I can live with that - done with hits after 34 should easily get 11 out in 37.

      All you ned to know.

      1. Sturidge fit - Coutinho.
      2. Sturrdge not fit - Firmino.

      It is quite simple

I'm not sure I agree with that.

        Firmino is fit = Firmino

Right, I think I'm set. Appreciate your thoughts

    Robles, DDG
    Bellerin, Smalling, Dann, Moreno, Gabriel
    Sanchez(C), KDB, Payet, Firmino, Lanzini
    Kun, Lukaku, Mitrovic
    0.0M ITB

If I can earn 0.1 M between now and Friday, I can change Firmino->Couts or Moreno->Sahko.

For GW35, will do Robles+Dann->Schmichel+PVA and play 10. Sets me up to get 11 DGW for 37 for only -4

Don't like the Moreno & Gabriel picks

By 36, you'll want to shift KDB to Ozil (assuming you'll have already moved Payet to Coutinho in 35)

    Robles/Mignolet
    Janmaat-Smalling-Lovern-Gabriel-Bellerin
    Countinho-Sanchez-Lanzini-KDB-Townsend
    Lukaku-Martial-Aguero

This is what my team would look like if I went all out on the DGW without Kane.
I blatantly stole the Townsend pick from the Scoutcast as I could not find another player to fit in there

It is probably as template as f**k for this site!
I got Janmaat in as he is always a good attacking threat.
Payet got dropped for KDB who seems to be flying plus he does not blank on gw35.
I plan to cover the blank players by getting southampon players in gw 35 v Villa Pelle/Long or Tadic/Mane or Van Djik

Janmaat hasn't been as attacking in the 2nd half of the season but I like the idea. He can pop off anytime and Newcastle need points.

Don't think you want to double up on Liverpool defense, but could work. I'd rather be able to double on Coutinho/Firmino by 35.

More importantly, don't want to double on Arsenal defense as that is going to make it hard to shift KDB to Ozil for week 36.

      Townsend is flair.

Maybe look to ManCity or WBA for alternate defenders.

        Worried about Firmino's fitness.
I tried to work in a man city defender but Hart and Oatamendi are the only definite starters.
I was almost able to get Oatmendi if I got Darlow and Milner. But I was .1m short which was annoying!

I not that worried about KDB to Ozil I never considered it. But I can always take a points hit if I feel like a gamble at that stage.

Unfortunately, a low TV has meant tight constraints on WC selections. Currently, decision is between:
A: Jagielka (or other?), Sakho, KDB, Mitrovic
    B: Coleman, Moreno, Bolasie, Kane

    Robles Darlow
    Gabriel _____ Bellerin _____ Simpson
    Sanchez _____ Mahrez Coutinho Lanzini
    Aguero Lukaku _____

In a perfect world with no injuries to my players this is the plan...
    Week 34
    Mignolet, Robles
    Smalling, Bellerin, Clichy, Clyne, Gabriel
    Sanchez, Payet, Coutinho, Lanzini, Lennon
    Aguero, Lukaku, Martial

    Week 35
Smalling, Lukaku and Martial become Kane, Fuchs and Pelle (-4)

    Week 37
Aguero, Pelle and Clichy become Lukaku, Martial and Smalling (-4)

This maximises the bench boost and gives a strong 11 for 35.
I'm not too excited about any team's doubles in 37 apart from West Ham so not worried about playing Kane and Fuchs.

    Is this sound thinking?

I have a very similar team at the moment and am very happy with it. I don't really agree with your transfers though.

      - I have Otamendi over Clichy, yet I'm punting on Darmian over Smalling.
      - Saving the West Ham onslaught for GW36 onwards.
      - Pelle in now for the rest of the season, but it was a really hard decision over Martial. The main reason I want him is these next 3 which you miss 2 of.
      - Fuchs will be great against SWA and mun but I'm not confident against EVE and che.

Like the players, it's just a matter of timing.

I have Smalling and Clichy over Otamendi and Darmian as I need that 6.5 for the transfers in 35. I want every player to have 2 games for my BB so Pelle is not an option before 35.
I don't have firm plans past 35 but should have a strong team for the next 3 weeks.

    Quandary:

    a) keep Fuchs for (sun) then ship out DGW34

That's the thinking I would like to go with, but I could easily see Fuchs getting a clean sheet and bonus, possibly an assist, and hit 9/10+ points. Whereas Dann is very likely to get 3/4 unless he scores, which isn't exactly 'likely'.

Have been on Lloris + Dier double up for awhile.

Not on WC, seems abit odd to get rid of them seeing how they're still in the title chase and defensively look very solid still.

Would you get rid of one for an Everton/Liverpool defender with that said?

      You've got it.

The only thing I'd say is I really fancy Sturridge. His assists+goals is nearly the same as Aguero over the past 3 years. I'd say, maybe, Migs, Sturridge, Coutinho.

That said I wont have Migs because of DDG, and Sturridge is out of my price range
