In the first of a two-part series, we examine the opportunities presented by those teams with a pair of Gameweek 37 fixtures and assess the potential on offer.

We begin with an analysis of the defensive options on show, scanning the eight double Gameweek teams and seeking out the most assured sources of clean sheets and attacking points.

The eight teams in question are neatly divided with half facing away trips, while the other four – Liverpool, West Ham, Sunderland and Norwich – provide us with two home fixtures. That quartet present the most obvious starting point when hunting clean sheets.

Ordinarily, the Liverpool defence would be in our thinking ahead of two Anfield meetings. Jurgen Klopp’s charges face Watford and Chelsea at home – both teams with little or no motivation – and then follow that up with a final day trip to West Brom.

Sadly, with Klopp hellbent on fielding weakened sides around Europa League ties, we have to consider Simon Mignolet (5.0) and his ever-changing back four as risks.

Given Mamadou Sakho’s suspension, Dejan Lovren (4.8) appears elevated as the most assured starter over the Reds’ remaining fixtures, while Alberto Moreno (4.8) is the gamble which could pay off given his recent run of form – the Spaniard has finally sparked to life to register a goal and three assists in his last three league starts.

However, with the threat of rotation and Liverpool’s home record of just five shutouts in 17 outings, it seems wise to overlook the Reds’ rearguard.

West Ham’s back four has only fared slightly better in front of their own fans, earning six clean sheets at Upton Park. They will be looking to leave their old stadium in some style and with an unlikely Champions League spot still within reach, they will be driven to earn results.

Fixtures with Swansea City and Manchester United show promise – both struggle for a cutting edge away from home. The Swans have blanked in their last two trips, while United have notched just once in their last three.

West Ham also have two standout options in Adrian (5.1) between the sticks and Aaron Cresswell (5.7) at left-back. Both offer the opportunity of supplementary points should they ship goals, with Adrian boasting strong save point potential, while Cresswell is a forward-thinking full-back who has claimed a goal and an assist in his last four.

When it comes to the motivation factor, no Gameweek 37 sides can compete with Sunderland or Norwich City. The relegation threatened pair are locked in a three-way tussle with Newcastle and are strictly in the results business.

The loss of Timm Klose to a knee injury was a huge blow to the Canaries and robbed us of the one sure-fire candidates in Alex Neil’s backline. Russell Martin (4.2) now looks to be the only secure option available offering at least some goal threat for crucial Carrow Road meetings with Manchester United and Watford.

Sunderland have more viable options plus an improved defensive record that has seen them ship just three goals in their last five league outings.

Vito Manonne (4.3) is a cat-like stopper who can reap save points from their two Stadium of Light meetings with Chelsea and Everton. Patrick van Aanholt (4.7) is the star turn, though – the raiding Dutchman has five goals to his name and has rattled in more attempts than any other defender in the league.

Of the four teams facing a pair of away trips, it’s presumed that Manchester United offer the most potential.

Louis van Gaal’s defence has proved resolute throughout a largely unconvincing campaign, although they’ve gained 12 of their 17 shut-outs at Old Trafford. Indeed, both Everton and Chelsea – two of the other Gameweek 37 sides to be considered – boast a superior away record when it comes to shut-outs.

With testing trips to West Ham and Norwich – both teams who will be highly motivated to earn three points – we’re having to lean towards David de Gea (5.9) as the weapon of choice within United’s squad, with save points as back-up. While Chris Smalling (6.5) offers an alternative, we’re far from certain on United’s clean sheet credentials over their two fixtures. The one caveat is that United face Bournemouth on the final day, boosting Smalling’s stock.

While Everton have a decent away record with seven clean sheets on the road, injuries have ravaged Roberto Martinez’ backline and the confidence has gradually seeped from the Toffees as the season draws to a conclusion. Leighton Baines blinked on the radar with his winner over Bournemouth last weekend but would represent a real gamble given his lofty 6.0 price tag.

Chelsea appear a stronger option, particularly with John Terry and Gary Cahill re-installed in central defence. That appears to free up Branislav Ivanovic (6.6) to return to right-back and offer us at least some attacking potential for away trips to Sunderland and Liverpool. The Serb has the edge over Cesar Azpicueletta given his set-piece threat – a clear factor given shut-outs at the Stadium of Light and Anfield look a stretch for Guus Hiddink’s men.

Watford are the final team on offer – a side with little to play for, blighted by dismal end of season form and seemingly unsettled by speculation over Quique Sanchez Flores’ future as manager. That, combined with an ever-changing back-four, tells you all you need to know on our attitude towards Hornets assets, although the telescopic charm of Heurelho Gomes (5.1) remains in our thinking.

The Brazilian is the top-ranked stopper in the Fantasy Premier League and may just benefit from a second-string Liverpool and a demoralised Norwich to earn his owners profit.

The Top Targets

Aaron Cresswell – the Hammers have arguably the strongest chance of delivering shut-outs over the Gameweek. Cresswell has a threat from range and will be a ready supplier of crosses aimed in the vicinity of the highly effective Andy Carroll.

Patrick van Aanholt – the left-back’s attacking prowess is key to his appeal as a desperate Sunderland go in search of crucial wins. With direct free-kicks added to his armoury of late, the Dutchman looks a key target.

David de Gea – while United’s clean sheet prospects will be stretched by a pair of testing fixtures, it ensures that the Spaniard will be called upon to replicate the form that has been pivotal in earning 17 shut-outs this term.

The Differentials

Heurelho Gomes – the eccentric stopper has starred throughout for the Hornets and is the only real secure option for their Gameweek 37 double. Save points could be key and he always offers the potential to add to his three penalty saves this term.

Branislav Ivanovic – back at full-back now that Terry and Cahill have returned, the pricey Serb just edges out Azpicueletta as the chief Blues’ contender. An expensive gamble that seems likely to rely on attacking returns.

Russell Martin – the injury to Andre Wisdom looks set to ensure that the Canaries club skipper will start the final three fixtures. His presence at set-plays on the end of measured Robbie Brady deliveries may yet prove crucial and profitable.

Leighton Baines – the mop-top left-back rekindled our flames with a winner at the weekend and, amidst a broken back four, offers the most secure starter with attacking to flair thrown in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Nearest rival in ML is 4 points behind me, I'm playing bench boost this week (the most he can play is AOA), and I have 8 DGWers to his 3, but comparison of teams, is there anyone I'm missing to make sure I beat him? I'm on -4 already.

    Mine:

    DDG/Begovic
    Valencia, Lascelles, PVA, Fuchs, Dawson
    Mahrez, Pedro, Ozil, Sanchez, Payet,
    Sturridge, Aguero, Rashford

    His:

    Cech, (Forster)
    Huth, Bellerin, Fuchs, Williams, Alderweireld
Eriksen, Antonio, Coutinho, Mahrez, De Bruyne
    Aguero, Welbeck, Defoe

Begovic, Valencia, and Sturridge are far from assured starts.
On a lesser scale Lascelles, Pedro, Aguero, and Rashford *should* all start but potentially get a rest.

That's quite a few doubts for a BB team. I wouldn't go crazy on hits though. It will be a close finish; there aren't really any great options that you don't have cover for/have.

      Good luck.

It's just so anti football. They'll literally do anything to win a game.

They're clearly talented but the rest of their game just makes it painful to watch. The hacking, the play acting, the simulations, the huge bus they park in front of goal...everything. I pray for no Madrid derby final, it'll be pure filth from both teams.

Play acting and simulation is a part of the culture over there unfortunately and is a lot worse from both Real and especially Barca.. i agree that part of the game is not pleasant but it exists and don't see it ever changing.. personally i love how they play and find it exciting in a non exciting way if you know what i mean.. It's a team playing to it's strengths and to compete against teams who operate on much bigger budgets and to see them succeeding is brilliant stuff.. game of opinions but would be boring if every team played the same way i find myself bored watching Barca most weeks with their tiki taka style draining the life out of teams and winning 6 nil i like a end to end game but that's just me.. Simeone has the ability to become one of the greats but will have to learn the english language if he thinking about coming to the Prem

we shouldn't have to accept "its a culture thing" I agree all teams in LL are horrendous on that, but Atletico take it to a whole other level. So play acting and all the rest of it is a style that you enjoy watching? How can you possibly enjoy Gabi claiming to have been taken down by a sniper every 5 minutes and waving his little imaginary card around. Or Koke booting the ball away every time a free kick is given against them? I can continue.

The prem is fantastic because it's so competitive and for the most part pretty good at stopping play acting and we really frown upon it. We get angry at divers over here - it's encouraged in Spain. Hope Simeone never comes to England

For the second time I find the play acting etc unpleasant like i'm sure everyone else does.. what i find exciting is watching a team literally run themselves to death for 90 minutes defend the way they do battle the way they do and still have the ability to produce that moment of magic to put their opponents to the sword when they have to.. and once again like i said i get pretty bored watching Barca camped outside their opponents penalty area for 90 minutes every week knocking the ball around.. i like to see contrasting styles and end to end games not training sessions

I think we have to agree to disagree. I see what you're saying about contrasting styles, but I can't appreciate it fully when all the other crap is going on. So painful to watch, especially when they play Barca or Real

Every single one of them is drilled to do absolutely everything they can to get an edge. Example last night when Oblak (clearly a very good keeper) around the 88 min mark decided to sit down and claim a knee injury. He's throwing himself around again 2 mins later like nothing happened. And that will happen about 10x every game across all their players

That happens in every league with every team. That kind of time wasting is everywhere and I reckon Bayern would´ve done the exact same thing if they were leading. It´s just a part of football these days. I agree though, hate it.

Not true. It happens primarily in La Liga. You don't see it anywhere near as bad in the Prem.

Barca & Real are also filth but they rely on winning games by playing great football. I appreciate Atletico don't have the talent and they've found away around it. Doesn't mean it's good to watch though

It's not the most exciting football to watch, but it gives his team the best chance of success when going up against more individually talented teams.

I'd rather a manager who favours results over play-style than the other way around. Leicester wouldn't have won the league going for a gung-ho attacking style every game.

They do have a very good squad, but I disagree that they'd do so well vs. Bayern and Barca without the theatrics/anti-football. They conceded quite a few chances last night when Bayern were allowed to actually play. Oblak is awesome and their defenders get in the way a lot, but relying on that (while the more sporting approach) would see them concede more goals, I believe.

I agree with what you're saying, though. I don't enjoy watching them play, but I would take Simeone at Utd in a heartbeat, if I thought he'd come.

Not necessarily, but I think it'd get results at a time where we need to get back to the top or risk falling further behind with Chelsea getting a good manager in Allegri, City getting Pep, Spurs with a great young squad and manager, even Liverpool with Klopp.

Ideally, Giggs turns out to be the new Fergie and will lead Utd to numerous trophies for the next 25 years, playing exciting, counter-attacking 4-4-2 , but somehow I don't think that will happen and Utd can't afford to take the chance either.

break away goal? you mean the pass down the middle where Bayern had their last 2 players by the half way line and Alaba trips over so Griezmann can run through? Oh, and in an offside position?

          • 11 Years

          A) wasn't offside, B) thank the genius Guardiola for having only two defenders to try and stop the inevitable counter and C) it most definitely was a break away goal. If you watch when Bayern give away possession I don't think anyone is in their half. 9 touches from the edge of the Athletico area to in the Bayern net. And that's not a break?

If that wasn't a brilliant goal on the break I'd like to see some YouTube of what you consider were better ones 🙂
It's not just the counter, it's the context. Griezmann had that one chance, against the best keeper there is, CL semi final away from home. Buried it.

buried a one on one completely unmarked. I'm not being funny but you'd expect Borini to score that.

You put it like that goal was the best goal ever scored. It wasn't

It's anti football because their job literally to stop the play. They'll get one goal and do absolutely everything to ensure the football is out of play for as long as possible.

I hate the 11 men behind the ball counter attack style but cant moan about that.

dont hate them, but everyone seems to have adopted them as their 'second' team because they like an underdog story, when actually if you watch them, they are pure dirt.

Athletico Madrid are not as defensive as you think. You probably only watch their games against the bigger sides but against anybody apart from Barca/RM , they dominate games in the La Liga. They have 2 world class players in Greizzman and Koke. I really like them as a team personally....one of the top 3 teams in Europe imo!

Mourinho did it for the 2nd half of the season last year to clinch the title..
I know 1 thing in football.. The best way to defend is to attack..like Barca do.. even with they average defenders, they cant stop winning..
Then there is another good defending, is to defend with 10 and trust the defense.. which Atletico do..
History shows that all attacking team are unable to play Atletico..

This could quite possibly be the most ignorant post on this forum, ever. As an American, sports are a competition, and you do what you can to slant the game in your favor. What could possibly be wrong with that?

Is their "style of play" any different than an american football player inching the ball forward when there's a big pile up? A hockey player going down easily or a goalie wearing a jersey with large sleeves to help him stop the puck? A basketball ball player taking an a half step extra?

Although their way of gaining an advantage may be dull at times, it certainly isn't any different than what athletes do across the spectrum of sports in a variety of ways.

            For the money, perhaps?

If money is no object Hazard looks the one to get.

Is it bad to hope for a small Aguero injury tonight? Like just enough to keep him out of this weekend's game against Arsenal...

    Would you rather have:

    a) Creswell, Delaney, Iwobi
    b) Cresswell, Ivan, Iwobi (-4)
    c) Creswell, Ivan, Townsend (-8)

    Cheers/Thanks

Leicester: 6 clean sheets in their last 8 games

Let's make that 7 in 9 this weekend...

Wouldn't that involve Lukaku in a failed to score yet again situation.

Tough to keep a clean sheet when each player has a gallon of {beer, champagne, tequila...you pick} in their gullet from the weeklong partay!!!!

If Kun gets injured tonight, who would you bring in to replace him?

    Probably go for Lukaku here.

You wouldn't say that if you've owned Lukaku since dgw 34

You can only have one player, one player only.

Who is your player for GW 37?

Hey all, playing in a Draft League and debating taking a hit for a new keeper.

I've currently got Mignolet & Robles and my opponents have De Gae, Forster, Adrian, & Schmeicel. Worth taking a hit for a guaranteed starter like Mannone? My original plan from a few weeks ago was to bring in Cech next week for the final game as the rest of my team is fairly solid by this stage. Not sure if its worth taking a hit or not for just 1 GW (albeit 2 games)
