Dugout Discussion – Portugal vs Austria

Saturday’s events end with a collision between two sides scrapping for a Euro 16 foothold.

Austria arrived in France with a laudable record in qualifying and were considered a darkhorse. But Marcel Koller’s men were found wanting in their opening fixture, frustrated and eventually overwhelmed by the Hungarians.

That 2-0 defeat means that tonight’s meeting with Portugal is now more vital than ever.

Fernando Santos’ side are also in dire need of the victory.

They were unable to overcome an Icelandic barrier to earn victory in their opening group encounter and now found themselves on the back foot. Defeat to Austria would swing the group wide open, leading to a dramatic final round of matches later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    I got exam on wednesday, no time to tinker and I'm first in my ML. Pleeease assist. Is this lot worth WC-ing. I'm in top 1k, not bragging just saying.

        You might be behind in your ML and everyones teams will look the same by then. Potential lack of advantage if L16 games all go to plan and no big teams have shock exits, and therefore 4 transfers will be enough for everyone else.

          wouldn't be a huge surprise for me. Got a goal in the first match in part to a keeping misjudgement and missed a bucketload of chances in the second game.

            And yet alternatively it could be that they rested Kanté who's got a yellow, and still played Pogba on right:

            But the rumour is that Griezmann and Pogba are back in the starting lineup, and take Gignac and Kanté with them, and the attack three of last match will drop. Another reason to rest Giroud is that he's on yellow, btw.

          Just a rumour. You'll see the lineup before deadline anyway.

          He would just be rested, probably, if he's not in the lineup. I think the main ideas of the change concern that midfield. Trying to get Pogba to left side, drop Matuidi who's been poor, and see if Cabaye can still do it in the Pirlo role. Kanté has excelled in that holding role though, so it could also be:

    So is my reasoning here sound? On a WC, it makes sense to look at these teams:

    France: will want a first place finish in the group, but only need a draw, so there may be rotation risk. Still, Payett and Griezmann look likely.

    Switzerland: either I trust in Dzemaili to break his duck (currently have him) or drop. They do need a result.

    Romania: Stancu may be worth a look as a third striker, but Albania is a tough nut to crack.

    England: either of Sturridge or Vardy, although I'm afraid that might be more point chasing than anything else. Maybe Walker if they are in with any hope of a cleanie since he does venture forward a lot.

    Wales: Bale and a defender. I don't fancy Russia to do much of anything, they just don't look interested.

    Germany: Muller has done so poorly that he is liable to start firing. Also Kroos or Ozil for the passing.

    Poland: Ukraine have nothing but pride left to play for, so I might look at loading up on two or three of theirs. Fabianski, maybe Milik.

    Spain: not sure about rotation risk but either of Morata and Nolito and maybe Alba look essential. I'm guessing they are going to want to at least get a result against Croatia so as not to get Italy.

    Croatia: Strinic may stay by virtue of being cheap, but I'd be investing in their attacking assets. Perisic, maybe Mandzukic, maybe even Rakitic.

    Belgium: Sweden don't look likely to score, but Ciman was benched today. Still might be tempted to risk him since he's only 4.0. Also, Lukaku looks essential at the moment.

    Portugal: Ronaldo - see Muller. I can't see him laying a third straight egg, not with progress on the line.

    Not sure how budget-friendly all this is, to be fair - waiting for the game to update to start tinkering.

    Italy have won the group so I'm tempted to go without any of their players for the last match, but is there a defender we feel will reap benefits. Will Giac be rotated?

      Muller logic is poor but I'm still wary to transfer out (no wc) Kroos & Draxler from their last game Ozil mainly absent although he should of scored. Ronaldo at least looks threating.
