Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka wasted little time in adding to his squad ahead of the club’s return to the top flight, with the signing of Denmark international Viktor Fischer from Ajax on a three-year deal.

With just 12 months remaining on his contract with the Amsterdam outfit, the 22-year-old winger arrives at the Riverside for a fee reportedly around £3.8 million, completed during the final few days of May.

The History

Fischer began his youth career playing for Danish sides Lyseng IF, Viby IF and AGF before moving to FC Midtjylland at the age of 15. His talent was quickly recognised outside of his homeland, though, and persuaded Dutch side Ajax to come calling just two years later.

Having impressed playing for the Ajax youth side during the 2011-12 campaign, Fischer was handed his Eredivisie debut in October 2012 as a substitute against Heracles. The Danish wide man would continue to impress during his maiden season with the first-team squad, with the high point coming in a 3-0 win over Feyenoord, where Fischer found the back of the net twice.

A hamstring injury suffered in February 2014 would curtail Fischer’s progress, though, and ruled him out for over a year after undergoing surgery. After beginning the 2015-16 season as Frank de Boer’s first choice right winger, the Dane soon lost his place in the starting XI and while he managed eight goals and three assists from 28 league appearances, he ultimately endured a frustrating campaign and featured several times for the reserves. Fischer ended his Ajax career with 24 goals and 13 assists from 79 league appearances.

Having featured through all the age groups for Denmark, Fischer made his senior debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw against Turkey in November 2012. He has played nine times for his country, scoring twice, with his most recent goal coming against Bosnia-Herzegovina in May this year.

The Prospects

With Karanka a firm believer in the 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s possible that the versatile Fischer could feature in any of the three attacking midfield positions.

He did spend the majority of his time with Ajax on the left, though, cutting inside onto his favoured right foot, though Gaston Ramirez’ loan return to Southampton could potentially allow the new boy to take up the central support role behind a lone striker. The Uruguayan produced seven goals and an assist from 15 starts during a temporary stint at the Riverside last term and Fischer may well be seen as a like-for-like replacement.

Delving into the data, Fischer’s goal threat, in particular, bodes well for next term. The Dane’s average of 29 minutes per attempt was slower than only Jordan Rhodes (21.9) amongst Boro’s squad in their promotion season, though an average of 62.7 minutes per key pass indicates he’s less of a playmaker, despite comparisons with Dennis Bergkamp early in his career.

Injuries have definitely curtailed his progress in recent years, but aged just 22, there’s still plenty of time for Fischer to deliver on the potential that caught the attention of the likes of Chelsea, Manchester united and Inter Milan during his formative years.

With Boro pulling out of a move to sign free agent Ramirez, Karanka could look to bring in further new faces to enhance the attacking options at his disposal. As mentioned in our article on Middlesbrough earlier this summer, though, the Spanish boss was certainly a fan of rotating his attackers last season, with no player scoring more than 10 league goals, so while Fischer is expected to get the chance to establish himself as a starter, the Fantasy appeal of Boro midfielders and forwards would diminish if Karanka persists with a similar policy.

While Fischer has plenty of potential, it’s likely that he’ll be priced around 5.5 to 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), in line with the likes of Nathan Redmond (5.5) and Matt Ritchie (6.0) last season, who were the prominent attacking midfield players for newly-promoted Norwich and Bournemouth.

Boro’s opening fixture list (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) is certainly extremely favourable, so should Fischer impress during pre-season, there’s a chance FPL bosses could consider the Dane as a potential fourth or fifth midfielder if he looks nailed-on, although backing their defenders will doubtless prove to be the more popular option.

Mourinho normally picks a fight with a big name star player at the club to stamp his authority on the players..

...Think he could be the man to oust Rooney? Odds of Rooney lining out for Everton in 2017/18? 😛

To me it just seemed like he was making clear Rooney will be his number 10.

With Pogba being the number 6 😉

Actually you were right in one way as Zlatan often plays as a number 10 for Sweden. He can play either role.

Yep, that's what I took from it - that he rates his experience as a striker and expects goals from him. He doesn't want to see one of his forwards playing deep in midfield. The aim is to have a good partnership with Zlatan up front.

Sounds like Rooney just became an option again.

Rooney playing as a striker was not an option, playing as a premium Mid is even less of an option. If he was priced below 7.5 and starting regularly, then I'll take a relook.

Or he could be bigging Rooney up to try and instill some life and fight into him, before realising he's past it and then taking out all of United's frustrations on Rooney, dropping him for Herrera / Rashford and finally putting an end to Wayne's reign..

My plan is to get Zlatan and Aguero in from the start. Will build my team around them. Aguero for his status as a FPL all time great, and Ibra for those fixtures... too good to ignore!

De Bruyne, Hazard, Kane, Sturridge.. all great options but cant have them all. Sanchez is the 3rd on my list, but doubt I'll be able to get all 3 in.

That said, if Ibra comes in at 12 million... I may have to reconsider. Shirely he wont be any more than 11 mil though?

        • 12 Years

I reckon he gets put within half a million of Aguero, his recent record in Paris has been out of this world. FPL will be very wary of underpricing him.

People are really punting on Zlatan from GW1 over more seasoned and proven players? I say "punt" because that's essentially what he is, an expensive punt.

We've no idea how fast he will adjust to the PL, in fact all he's got is three good opening fixtures. I'm not risking 10-11% of my budget from the start when I don't have to. He may hit it off from the start but I'm confident cheaper players will score similarly for the first few games at least.

I'm Wildcarding gw4. Sticking with him for 3 gws won't prove to disastrous IMO ecspecially as all 3 fixtures are good prompting casuals and drained players alike to stick with him. There will probably be other areas we would need to fix in the team as well as we can remember well from last season e.g. Walcott

      • 12 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

I'm with you on going without him but big new strikers can do it. Aguero got 8 goals and an assist in his first 5 games after arriving and Costa got 7 goals in his first 4.

23 and 25 and both came from smash and grab Atleti sides.

Your question is how fast will he adjust? And there's a history of yes new signings being terrible but also a history of immediate brilliance. Then there's the fact he's kicked off well enough at 4 different clubs in his first season and then there were his 3 goals and an assist in 4 games vs Chelsea and City this season to show he can do it against PL defences.

Zlatan is 34, there's no denying that is old. Look at how quickly RVP declined from after his first season with United at only 29.

I honestly can't see Zlatan adjusting to the PL instantly and getting 20 goals over the season, which is what you expect for a striker for 11m. If he was on penalties, he might stand a better chance but he's not even on those (as far as we know)

Fitness could be a big issue, the PL is intense compared to the French league, and yes while he adjusted in other leagues, he was a lot younger and fitter at the time. Could even see less minutes to allow Rashford to flourish.

Just too much risk carried in that pricetag. Would sooner have Lukaku at 10m who is consistently hitting about 15 goals a season and Aguero who is the best striker in the league

              9 years, 5 months ago

I can see all your points and coupling it with United's turgid build up last season is why I'm hesitant on him, but I don't think he can really be called a punt.

I see him as a punt because those planning to take him for GW1 are spending an enormous amount of money on a player that has huge question marks over his head as regards to our season expectations of him

Regardless of whether a lot of people get him I still see him as a punt. Lots will get Rooney too, and I still see him as a punt for the same reason

Rooney's a punt because he's coming off 18 months of no production. Zlatan's coming off a truly electric season of 38 goals and 13 assists in 31 league games and 5 goals and 3 assists in 10 Champions League games. His production was as elite as you can find anywhere.

Under LvG it started with RvP, then passed to Rooney, then to Mata then to Herrera, who took 2 and scored both (one v Liverpool when Mata wasn't on the pitch, one v that Danish clun I can;t spell, after Mata missed

With those fixtures it's better to risk at the start and then sell him if he blanks.

If we think about it, isn't that the best way to punt? Get some players who are punty with 2-3 good fixtures and by the time things get hard you should have a good idea of who to bring in and a good reason to get them out. I think almost everyone is a bit of a punt for the first few games.

He didn't have any problem actually dropping him but he did have problems with the fall out that came with it dropping Terry.

He went head to head with some dressing room heavyweights and he didn't win let's say.

Really the thing to do with Rooney is sell him but then United should have got rid of him ages ago. He's done.

I know almost everyone feels Rooney with his contract, status and standing in the club is almost non-negotiable in the starting XI, but José is made of sterner stuff. Also, to make a point, he always picks on a outstanding club player to fight with.

Jose won't put Rooney in the 10 role just because he's Rooney and used to score goals. That makes no sense.

Had no trouble taking captain John Terry out of the Chelsea team at times. And Terry was actually good, Rooney isn't.

I have been top of a sponsored league for the past few weeks, but two fellas entered into it last night and are 30 points ahead of me. Surely unfair for people to join in when only 3 matches left.

I'm glad I did because groups were fun at least but it's just becoming a chore now. Half my opponents haven't even bothered replacing their DQd players

Yeah, made my changes already and will now just leave it. Once FPL opens it will be dead to me anyway.

    @Utd Fans

What are your expectations this season under Jose?

One of my friends said it'll depend on what kind of football he plays, but top 2/3 and a cup win is the target.

So who are the late season run going to start with a bang players of this season? Akin to Jamie Vardy who ended last season with a bang.

      • 12 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

      Mkhitaryan and Alexis Sanchez

Azza is one in great form too. Divock is another nice under the radar option. Lets not forget the amound of goals pool score despite the bad fixtures. They thrive on them.

The same Divock who missed the last month of the season through injury?

Now Kane I can get behind.

Thing with Divock was when he was fit, Klopp loved him. Great underpriced option hopefully for when glass legs breaks.

not sure on that one, but with everyone focused on Sanchaz and Ozil, Santi could be under the radar pick
