Great Expectations

Whilst West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet made an immediate impact in the Premier League, fellow new boy Michail Antonio took some time to settle.

Snapped up from Nottingham Forest, the winger struggled to stake a claim in Slaven Bilic’s first-team plans and managed just two sub appearances in the first 14 matches.

From Gameweek 15 onwards, though, Antonio started every league match for the Hammers and finished the season with eight goals and seven assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), in what ultimately proved to be a hugely impressive first campaign. Indeed, over the last few days, his displays have earned the wide man an improved contract with the Hammers.

Antonio’s pace and power helped the midfielder to effortlessly make the step up to the top flight, while from a Fantasy perspective, it was his ability in the air which made him stand out, with six of his goals coming from headers, bettered only by Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (seven).

Whilst a total of 126 points wasn’t overly impressive due to those first few months on the bench, Antonio’s average of 4.8 points per appearance – just behind Stoke’s Marko Arnautovic (4.9) – highlights his Fantasy potential for the campaign ahead.

KEY FACTORS

  • Once handed his chance, Antonio’s physical attributes saw him acclimatise to the Premier League very quickly. The former Forest man’s versatility is also key to his pitch time and strengthens the likelihood of starts even if Bilic switches to a three-man backline. With James Tomkins and January signing Sam Byram spending time in the treatment room during the second half of the campaign, Antonio was utilised at right-back and right wing-back as well as on the flank. With Byram now undertaking his first pre-season with the club, and the possibility of Bilic bringing in another right-back following Tomkins’ departure to Crystal Palace, there’s every chance that Antonio will be utilised as an attacking midfielder next time around.
  • Providing they get through two qualification rounds and qualify for the group stages of the Europa League, Bilic will be looking to add even more quality and depth to the West Ham squad next season. Bearing in mind that Andy Carroll was their top-scoring forward with nine strikes, the Hammers boss will be desperate to strengthen his options up front and the prospect of playing behind a high calibre centre forward looks promising for Antonio, as he looks to improve on last year’s seven assists.
  • Finishing seventh in the Premier League last term, and scoring 65 goals, the joint-fourth highest total, many Fantasy managers will be keen to tap into a West Ham side that ranked fifth for both total goal attempts and chances created. Antonio’s average of 269.5 minutes per goal last season was second only to Carroll for the Hammers and ranked ninth quickest amongst regulars midfielders, which is all the more impressive given his stint in defence. Strikes against the likes of Spurs, Liverpool and Man United illustrate his fixture-proof ability as a route into Bilic’s ever-improving attack.
  • There’s little doubt Dimitri Payet will remain the top target within the West Ham midfield, with his price likely to escalate to around the 10.0 mark in FPL. While Antonio’s valuation is also set to increase from last term’s initial 6.0, he’s expected to sit in the mid-price bracket at around 7.5, given he ultimately finished on 126 points. Having racked up four double-figure hauls last year – all in front of his own supporters – Antonio could emerge as a real differential if Payet, as expected, remains the most popular West Ham option for Fantasy managers.
  • The opening schedule certainly offers Bilic’s side the chance to get quick out of the blocks – indeed, according to our Fixture Ticker, West Ham’s schedule is ranked as the most favourable of all 20 teams across the opening 11 Gameweeks. Although they face trips to Chelsea and Man City in the first three, it’s worth noting that the Hammers earned four points over the corresponding fixtures in 2015/16 and scored twice on each occasion. The remaining matches over that run (BOU, WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN, eve, STO) all look very promising for Bilic’s main men as they look to improve upon last seasons seventh-placed finish. Bearing in mind that Manuel Lanzini will miss the first couple of matches after being called up for Argentina’s Olympic squad this summer, Antonio certainly looks likely to open the season as part of Bilic’s attack.

Yeah, there's definitely some interest in comparing his C'ship scoring stats to those of the former C'ship-to-PL forwards' and then see the effect that the move to PL had to their scoring. This is also something that I think has been done here before, so I'm sure somebody will come up with these comparisons when FPL opens and the season start gets closer.

No not on a wild card, used it in semis so currently have 4 French players (kid, Payet, pogba, giroud) and 3 Portuguese (cedric, renato, Ronaldo). Stupidly didn't go for griezman. Can I see his team before kick off??

Get 4 Franchise to complete your team and just captain somebody he doesn't. But you should perhaps wait a bit before you make your transfers, because you can see each others' teams, including the recent changes to them, so he can copy your team with his wildcard if you make your transfers now. Leave them as late as possible.

I think I've seen the teams of my rivals before it too. But maybe I remember it wrongly. I haven't cared about its too much, don't tend to watch the rivals, rather just focus on winning the game.

1 point behind the 2 joint leaders, with 3 teams 1-2 points behind me.

5-2-3 with Guerreiro, Renato and Ronaldo (no Pogba) or...

4-3-3 with Renato, Nani and Ronaldo (no Giroud)

    I'm thinking the former... Thoughts?

Trouble with the 4-3-3 is, I think that's the more obvious choice and there's a higher chance that one of the teams above me could choose the exact same team.

5-2-3 gives me some means of differentiation.

I agree with this spending big isn't always the answer.
But there comes a time you might have to do it to take the next step.
And in some cases the clubs had no choice but to scout well and find cheap talent to develop.
Dortmund is a great example, it was not long ago they had to get money from their competatives to not implode as a club. They simply had no choice.
Arsenal should be quite well set up in finances. New tv deal at least should have secured that.

Benteke (CPL) - they put the most crosses in and suits his style of play + is the main man

Mata (EVE) - will be the main creative player and will have plenty of pace in front of him.

Currently on this team with 3 transfers intact and a 12 point lead to defend in my ML.
    Lloris
    Cedric-Guerriero-(Fonte)-(Kos)
    Renato-Payet-Pogba
    Ronaldo-Griezzman-(Nani/Giroud)

Closest rival has this team from the Semis.
    Rui Patricio
    Fonte-Cedric-Guerriero-****
    Payet-Pogba-****
    Ronaldo-Griezzman-****

Who would you transfer in, if in his place to beat my score?
I think should get Rui inplace of Lloris as a penalty save + CS could make all the difference. Opinions

Striker options this year could be really tough. Last year there didn't seem to be many options but with the signings potentially coming in to the league it looks like we'll have big decisions on where to put out money this year.

Okay guys, this is going to be very random but basically I'm doing a trial with a company to see how many followers I can gain them on Instagram. If this goes well then I could potentially be send a lot of free clothes, shoes etc. so it means a lot to me.

All I am asking is if you can go and follow the following accounts on Instagram:

    @GFG.UK
    @mainlinemenswear

And if possible, like the most recent post on the @GFG.UK account.

I know this is really random and might be seen as advertising (I don't personally think it is but hey ho) but it will help me out massively!

Thank you so much in advance!

Hopefully soon I'll be back on here more regularly to actually post some useful stuff 😉

They can't directly, though 1) They don't gain that many followers per day, maybe just a couple, so any drastic increase is likely to be down to me. 2) I have made posts on my IG tagging them, so anyone who likes those posts/follows me that follows them can be seen to have come from my page.

Cost of this squad do we reckon? Kinda what I'm hoping for....

    Mandanda/ Heaton
    Shaw/ Baines/ SWA/ WBA/ 4.0m
    Hazard/ Mkhitaryan/ Mané/ Alli/ 4.5m
    Aguero/ Lukaku/ Benteke

Definitely won't be within the 100m budget will it?

Not sure but got a few questions
Mané worth it with those bad fixtures?
      SWA defender because?
      Lukaku most likely is leaving?

Mané is a good player ad Liverpool are a good team, regardless of fixtures they will score goals from the style Klopp has them playing. Just remains to be seen whether Mane will be among the goals.

Swansea consistently good at home each season with clean sheets

If Lukaku stays he's always good for 15+ goals, so hope he does

Any thoughts on whether people are going to be avoiding players who will return to preseason late because of Euro participation? Normally these players miss games through a lack of match fitness.

Mainly I'm thinking Payet, and to a lesser extent Giroud, may be worth transferring in after a few weeks...

I was just thinking of giving Griezmann a target man so that he can make those penetrative runs and Ronaldo is the best one I could find. I mean Payet putting in the crosses for Ronaldo knock downs to Griezmann would be a thing of beauty-! 😀

Main card starts at 3 innit? Meaning you'll get to see Cain Velasquez and maybe Aldo.

Any chance it will start early if the preliminaries finish early or is the main card a fixed time? 😕

It's a fixed time no matter what, because that's when then PPV starts in the States. Guaranteed to start at 3.

Do we know whether the stats tables up to date for the 15-16 season?

Only mention it as I'm delving into some of the figures and it says Everton conceded 6 in GW37 when they only conceded 3...!
