Chelsea end Liverpool’s summer winning streak thanks to a Gary Cahill header. Andre Ayew is amongst the goals again as Swansea breeze past Swindon, Bojan Krkic fires Stoke to victory against Orlando City, whilst Sunderland’s Joel Asoro and Palace’s Freddy Ladapo take their chance to impress.

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0

Gary Cahill earned the Blues a narrow win in a bad-tempered affair that saw Cesc Fabregas red-carded for a shocking two-footed challenge and five Liverpool players cautioned earlier this morning.

Antonio Conte continued with a 4-2-4 formation, allowing Willian and Victor Moses the flank roles on either side of Bertrand Traore and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, whilst Fabregas partnered Nemanja Matic in the heart of midfield.

Fabregas provided the assist for Cahill’s tenth-minute winner before blotting his copybook midway through the second period. Despite losing the Spaniard, Conte made just four alterations and replaced each of his front quartet as the match unfolded – this saw new boy Michy Batshuayi earn minutes off the bench along with the likes of Pedro and Juan Cuadrado.

Liverpool tasted defeat for the first time this summer, having previously won all four of their friendlies.

Jurgen Klopp started with Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino as a front three, with the latter having a goal ruled out for offside before making way just after the hour-mark. The Merseysiders made nine alterations after the break but were unable to capitalise on their one-man advantage after Fabregas was sent packing on 70 minutes.

New centre-half Ragnar Klavan started alongside the likes of Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno in the back-four and the Reds boss confirmed that the former did not suffer any injury as a result of the challenge that led to Fabregas’ dismissal.

The German also went on to reveal that he reckons Joel Matip will be fit for the start of the upcoming campaign as the Cameroon international steps up his recovery from an ankle complaint:

“I expect him to start the season. But for this, he has to train a little bit more. The first two-and-a-half weeks were really good, he became better and better and then he was out. Now I think it is a week or more he has been out. He was in a training group today and hopefully he can be back in team training as soon as possible. The season start at this moment is not in doubt.”

Klopp also rolled out an injury update on midfielder Marko Grujic, who was subbed off at the break with concussion:

“The biggest problem for me in this moment is that Marko Grujic is in hospital, because he can’t remember anything. That’s not too cool. Hopefully it’s not too serious but of course a young boy in this situation is not too cool. Injuries after games like this in pre-season is the biggest problem obviously.”

Chelsea XI: Begovic; Aina, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Fabregas, Matic; Willian (Pedro 67),Traore (Batshuayi 67), Loftus-Cheek (Chalobah 72), Moses (Cuadrado 67).

Liverpool: Karius, Randall (Milner 64), Lovren (Wisdom 64), Klavan, Moreno (Alexander-Arnold 82), Stewart (Brannagan 82), Ejaria (Henderson 64), Grujic (Lallana 45), Mane (Markovic 64), Coutinho (Ojo 64), Firmino (Ings 64).

Dijon 2 Sunderland 3

Youngster Joel Asoro was the star of the evening as the Black Cats maintained their 100% summer record in France last night.

With Jermain Defoe still sidelined due to a groin injury, Asoro was handed his first start for Sunderland, with David Moyes fielding Fabio Borini and Wahbi Khazri out wide in a front three. The teenager opened the scoring and teed up Khazri for his second of the summer before making way for Duncan Watmore just after the hour-mark.

Watmore – who netted twice at the weekend – was brought down for a spot-kick, which Borini duly converted to chalk up another win for the Wearsiders.

The fit-again Jan Kirchhoff returned to action and played from start to finish in his first appearance of the summer. After being utilised as a centre-half at the weekend, the versatile Jack Rodwell started at right-back as Billy Jones dropped to the bench.

After the match, first team coach Robbie Stockdale admitted the club won’t take any chances with their top scorer Defoe:

“Jermain picked up a little thigh strain in one of the sessions. It won’t be a long injury and I’m sure Jermain will be keen to be fit for the first game of the season, and we are as well. At the moment it’s probably too early to say and we don’t think it’s anything serious, but obviously with a player like Jermain you don’t to take any risks”.

Stockdale was a lot more optimistic on the fitness of Patrick van Aanholt, though, after the left-back was forced off injured early on in the second period:

“At the break Patrick felt some groin tightness but he said he’d have a go and see if it would loosen off. There is absolutely no major issues there; whether we risk him on Saturday will depend on how he settles down over the next couple of days, but he will be fit for Borussia Dortmund.”

Sunderland XI: Pickford; Rodwell (Jones 62), Kone, Kaboul, Van Aanholt (T Robson 53); Cattermole (E Robson 71), Kirchhoff, Lens; Borini, Asoro (Watmore 62), Khazri (N’Zogbia 79).

Wimbledon 2 Crystal Palace 3

Substitute Freddy Ladapo played a pivotal role as Palace chalked up a second win in the space of 48 hours last night.

Connor Wickham grabbed the Eagles opener, courtesy of a Zeki Fryers assist, before the youngster emerged from the bench to tee up Yannick Bolasie and then net the winner thanks to a cross from Ben Wynter.

Having started against Colchester on Monday evening, Andros Townsend was afforded a 30-minute run-out as a second-half sub, whilst Jason Puncheon was fielded in the double-pivot alongside Mile Jedinak.

Although Pape Souare returned to action for the first time this summer, Alan Pardew was without James Tomkins, Wilfried Zaha, James McArthur and Bakary Sako due to injury last. The Palace boss is now sweating on the fitness of Fraizer Campbell, who was replaced by Ladapo just two minutes after the interval after picking up a muscle problem.

Palace XI: Speroni, Kelly (Binnom-Williams 79), Dann (Wynter 72), Delaney (Croll 67), Fryers (Souare 46); Jedinak (Boateng 72), Puncheon (Mutch 79); Kaikai, Bolasie (Lee 72), Campbell (Ladapo 47), Wickham (Townsend 60).

FC Twente 1 Southampton 2

Southampton recorded a third straight win under new manager Claude Puel thanks to goals from Virgil van Dijk and substitute Sam Gallagher.

Dusan Tadic recovered from a minor leg problem to take his place in the Saints’ XI and supplied the assist for Van Dijk’s opener. The Serbian was fielded just behind front pair Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriguez, with new boy Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg afforded his first start at the base of the midfield diamond. Post-match, the latter’s displays at both ends of the pitch earns the praise of the local press.

Jose Fonte, Cedric Soares, Shane Long, Fraser Forster, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis were not selected as Puel allows them to build up their match sharpness after featuring in Euro 2016.

Nathan Redmond replaced Austin at the break and bearing in mind both the former Norwich man and Rodriguez are listed as midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Puel’s preferred starting XI is clearly worth keeping an eye on as we assemble our 15-man squads.

Southampton XI: Lewis; Martina (Valery 62), Yoshida (Jones 62), Van Dijk, (Stephens 62), McQueen (Targett 46); Clasie (Ward-Prowse 46), Hojbjerg (Hesketh 62), Reed (Romeu 46), Tadic (Gallagher 62), Austin (Redmond 46), Rodriguez (Isgrove 62).

Swindon 0 Swansea 3

Mo Barrow grabbed a goal and two assists as Swansea swept aside Swindon to chalk up a second win in four days.

After both sides went in goalless at the break, Francesco Guidolin’s decision to make eight alterations to his XI proved the difference. Barrow needed just five minutes to set up fellow sub Andre Ayew – fielded up front once again – to net his second goal in as many appearances.

With Gylfi Sigurdsson and the Swans’ Euro 2016 contingent still yet to feature, Barrow was handed a share of free-kick duties and provided the assist as Jay Fulton extended the visitors’ lead on 55 minutes. Barrow then supplied the finish after being played through by Jefferson Montero, who was featuring for the first time this summer.

Swansea (first-half): Tremmel; Naughton, Fernandez, Van der Hoon, Kingsley; Fulton, Cork; Dyer, Gorre, Routledge; McBurnie.

Swansea (second-half): Tremmel; Rangel, Roberts, Amat, Van der Hoon; Fulton, Fer; King; Barrow, Ayew, Montero

Orlando City 1 Stoke 2

Goals from Mame Biram Diouf and Bojan Krkic earned the Potters their first win of the summer in the early hours of this morning.

Mark Hughes opted for a 3-4-3 formation, which saw the fit-again Ryan Shawcross play as part of a back-three alongside Phillip Wollscheid and Marc Muniesa. Glen Johnson and Erik Pieters (priced at 5.0 and 4.5 in FPL respectively) were fielded as wing-backs, with Marko Arnautovic and Bojan playing as inside forwards behind Diouf.

Johnson supplied the assist for the Senegal international’s opener, which was his second in as many matches, before Charlie Adam teed up Bojan – who comes in at 6.0 and is classified as a midfielder this time around – to fire home the winner from 25 yards out.

Stoke XI: Butland; Shawcross, Wollscheid, Muniesa; Johnson (Bardsley, 66), Adam, Imbula (Shenton, 82), Pieters; Bojan (Joselu, 66), Diouf (Crouch, 66), Arnautovic (Lecygne, 71).

Chances of Watmore starting for Sunderland? We had him on loan at Hibs a few years ago and he wasn't that impressive but he seems a different player now.

was quite pessimistic before the PAOK game, but we played well although it wasn't the best result (because of Cillessen's awful blunder). Now more optimistic. I like our new manager.

If we get another decent striker with the Milik money, or a loan like Traore (who is top of the target list) then we'll be well set. Dolberg is already looking impressive. I'd also like a new keeper but that's not going to happen.

    Morning guys.
What are your thoughts on a one goalie strategy vs a rotation based one?
My gut tells me that having someone like DDG the entire season might be as effective, if not more, than having two cheaper ones that I have to rotate properly throughout the season.

For me it has to be a premium keeper with an unused 4m. Rotation is too dicey.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic - Rotation, Rotation, Rotation

Every season when FPL launches one of the first things people do is look for the best rotations, usually for goalkeepers and defenders and more rarely for attackers.

People seem to be fairly split on this tactic with those that really like having players that rotate decent home fixtures to those that straight up don't think it works.

I'm personally a fan, especially for goalkeepers - I'm already looking at Foster / Heaton and hoping that with a good fixture they can at least get me save points if not a cheeky clean sheet.

With defenders I may still do it with a couple of cheap players but otherwise I quite like having a good defender in a good team that may net me some attacking points or bonus points too regardless of fixtures to a certain extent.

How do you approach this - does it change every season or are you always on the look out for the best rotations? Have you already got a rotation lined up and if so which teams and players are you going for?

I might change to this if I need the money - Foster might not even need rotating at the start but I do love a good rotation...

The problem with the cheaper keepers is that in an 'easy' game you can expect a 6-pointer yet it is against the bigger teams when you've probably benched them that they can get you a double-digit haul.

Butland or Gomes last season would have worked fine as standalone keepers saving you 1.0m over the likes of Cech/DDG in the process

You'll always prefer to have the points in your starting XI (obviously) but even on the bench it helps with team value as other fantasy managers bring those players in.

      Of course.

      In goal: Heaton/Foster. Obvious.
In defence all 5 defs rotate quite well, I was also thinking about West Ham and Southampton rotation but I'm not so sure whether Southampton will be as good in defence under Puel as they were under Koeman.

GKs I tend to start with 1 nailed until I can see where the best rotations are then move to that on WC. Defenders I always have 2 nailed ones and then try to rotate 1 from the other 3 - although this regularly turns in to using 2 of the 3 for a varity of reasons, and I will always look to have a 4.0 in the 3 (although not necessarily from GW1 - might only be after WC). That's the plan but I haven't put any names to it yet.

      Cheers Andy.
You have any statistics on how much there is to gain points vice if you properly rotate your goalies? And by properly I mean playing the goalie with the better fixture.

Would also need to consider other factors, like what you could afford elsewhere in your team if you went for cheaper keepers and if those extra points are more than the extra points for the more expensive keeper. Also TV, more likely to get higher SV from midfielders/attackers who rise more quickly than keepers.

Ultimately I look at my keepers and assume best I'll get from them is 6 or 7 points. The 10+ pt mega hauls are usually reserved for cheaper keepers who make loads of saves against good sides. Might happen once a season.

Why spent 9.5 on a DDG/Jaku combo when you can free up a million and have Foster/Jaku. Penny pinching early doors is vital to getting the right players in, and you can't afford to be profligate with keepers on your 5th def imo.

Have a look at WBA/WHM rotation

    10. Reiko

I have always been a fan of rotation as I like to keep my options open depending on the fixtures, especially the goalkeepers. Had Boruc/ Gomes as home/away rotation players for over 30 straight weeks, right from GW1. Planning my team keeping this mind for this season as well. Although sometimes it backfires big time if your guy whom you decide to bench outscores the guy you selected over him. At this time, the CPL/WBA/MID defenders look best for rotation.

      Keepers - Fair enough

Defenders - Can't help but laugh at the people who write out a long plan rotating 4.5-5.0 defenders. Something is always going to go wrong. Red cards, injury's, teams just being terrible defensively probably contribute to 90% of these plans going wrong. Thinking ahead to make sure that you won't have a disaster week is smart but people overthink things to the extreme.

I like keeper and defensive rotation, but I will be looking at implementing them when I use my first wildcard, for 2 reasons -

      1. The defensive frailties will make themselves known after the first 3/4 weeks of the season and it will be clearer which rotations will work best, and which players represent the best value.

      2. With so many changes in top teams, sometimes the only clear way into their defence is to get their goal keeper, Arsenal being a good example this season, which is why I have Cech at the moment.

I took Cech out because the back line looks shot to pieces for the season opener.

When I rotate, I always end up with too many points on the bench. This year I'll have one nailed-on premium keeper and 3 premium defenders, a non-playing 4m keeper and either 2x4.5 starting defenders (who CAN rotate but will usually both be on the bench) or a 4.5 back-up and non-playing 4.

    15. Rossonero

I personaly don't look to much into rotation, i like having a 4.5 keeper (Foster atm) and 4.0 backup(if i can find a playing 4.0 then great, if not then just someone who won't lose me any money). In defence i usually got with two who will play every game (atm on Terry and Shaw) and two 4.5 that won't neccesary rotate great, just need em to be nailed and from decent defensive teams (curenty on Friend and Fernandez), plus 4.0 who never plays.

I normally like one or two expensive starting defenders, with cheapies rotating around them, but I'm not blown away by the fixtures of any of the elite options this year.

I very much enjoyed having DDG as my only keeper last year, and was thinking of going Courtois this year, but in the short term (assuming a fairly early wildcard), I think that Foster and Heaton give better value.

5-way rotation that I posted yesterday is linked below:

I seem to be the only one with Forster/Adrian rotating for the first 9 weeks.

      Fixtures-Wat,Bou,Sun,Wat,Swa,Sot,Mid,Sun,Bur all at home.

Is it really not worth the extra outlay on Foster/Heaton?

Tried it several times in the past and don't feel it works!

I'd rather spend more money on a player who stays in my team every game then risk which of 2 players will score more points.

Currently on Heaton and Foster paired with Keane and Dawson for double up rotation! Alongside Shaw and Gabriel.

i do know people who like the rotation but some times they pick the wrong one, then are gutted benching points!

There's actually a really good app that works out the rotations for you. 'FPL Wizard Pro'. Its available on Android but i'm not sure about Apple.

It can calculate the best 2 way rotations, 3 way rotation with 1 playing, 3 way rotation where 2 play and a custom option so you can create or see how your back 5 rotate.

I've just remembered how effective Cuadrado was for Conte at Juventus last season.
At 7.0 does that make him a viable option for this coming season? I know he looked appalling in his brief showing under Mourinho but I'm fairly sure that's not a true reflection of his ability.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or statistics to knock me back down?

Depends if and when Conte shifts to a 3-5-2. Cuadrado would be pretty nailed at RWB if that happened.

Conte regards Cuadrado highly and was very firm on having him in Chelsea's squad this season. He will be well aware of how well he did at Fiorentina and Juve, having been Italy manager at the time.

The first 2 are easy. The third is tough. I like Barkley but he has been very inconsistent and hard to predict. Ayew is good but people are picking him cos of his fixtures, plus if they sign a striker, his appeal goes down. Lamela has a moderate appeal for the season, especially at his price

Hey guys, would appreciate some help! I have an auction league coming up in a couple of days but haven't had much time to figure out my targets beforehand. Basically, I have a few questions on "likely" lineups.

Man City - Who is the expected right/left backs? Or is it completely up in the air? And do people think Sterling will get gametime - or will Nolito eat away at that?

Chelsea - Azpi seems to be a lock but who will partner Zouma once he comes back - Terry or Cahill? And do we expect Ivan or Baba Rahman as the other fullback?

Liverpool - Clyne is a lock, Moreno too if they don't sign anyone. But who's the likeliest for central midfield? Matip and Loveren? Or do you think Sakho comes in.

More importantly, what do we expect the attacking setup to look like. Coutinho / Firmino / Sturridge likely locks but torn on Henderson, Milner, Mane, Wijnaldum, etc.

Man United - Completely lost on the defense. Smalling/Jones? Or does Blind come in? And Shaw over Valencia? And does Darmian claim the right back spot?

I know it's a lot of questions and most of these can't be answered. I'm just trying to figure out what the consensus on the "likely" lineups is for now.

    Cheers!

Liverpool - Clyne, Matip, Sakho, Moreno, Can, Wijnaldum, Mané, Firmino, Coutinho, Sturridge

Man United - Smalling and Bailly primary duo imo. Darmian/Valencia for the RB spot and Shaw for the LB spot.

        Cheers! That helps.

Milner / Henderson both not going to make it? Also, I thought Lovren was being mooted around the likeliest of the lot.

United defense helps a lot. I'll probably target Shaw / Smalling.

        1. Jazz!
          • 10 Years

Milner could make it instead of Wijnaldum, same for Hendo but a lower chance. Sakho and Matip are both better defenders than Lovren and Klopp knows that.

Yeah, Shaw probably the best pick since he's 0.5m cheaper.

Thanks. Yup, I'd agree with that but god knows why people keep saying Lovren should start. I guess Matip would be the safest option between those.

Oh, money doesn't factor in - it's an auction so prices will be different anyway. I'm just trying to figure out what the guarantees are (who I would prefer to get).

City: expect Clichy to start atm, better ball retention for Pep. Don't think Sterling will start every game.
      Chelsea: Cahill. Probably Ivan.
Liverpool: Klopp seems to like Loveren. Centre mid Can and one other. Talk of Hendo moving on. Mane, Firmino, and Cout. Should start.
Utd: No idea. Smalling plus one. Expect Shaw to play.
