After giving you a heads-up on the Scout League and rule changes in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game earlier this week, we now turn our attentions to the player list.

Starting at the back, we begin our series of articles by looking at the goalkeepers.

When assessing our stopper options, it’s important to bear in mind they are now awarded seven points for each clean sheet earned, as opposed to five points in previous seasons. This appears to be an attempt to elevate the premium bracket of keepers into our thinking and bring them alongside the value budget options, who frequently relied on bonus points to boost their potential.

With tier one of bonus returning +2 for five or more saves and the new tier two system earning you +3 points for a minimum of seven stops, there is clearly a case for saving the pennies in this area and selecting a budget keeper who is likely to be kept very busy.

It will be interesting to see who comes out on top, though, of course, the Holy Grail would be to pick a keeper who excels in both areas.

Here are our top ten picks across the price brackets..

Tom Heaton 5.8m

Burnley’s number one has previous; in their ill-fated 2014/2015 campaign, Heaton still managed to keep ten clean sheets and racked up 130 saves, having played all 38 matches. He also made two penalty saves, which are now worth five points apiece. Having registered 20 clean sheets in the Championship last term, he looks the standout option amongst the promoted teams.

Vito Mannone 6.0m

Despite failing to start a league match until Gameweek 18 last season, the Sunderland stopper still managed to earn more bonus points (18) than any other goalkeeper. Mannone’s average of 23.8 minutes per stop was quicker than any number one in 2015/16 and his ability to hoover up the save points makes the Italian a great value option between the sticks as the Wearsiders look to regroup under David Moyes.

Heurelho Gomes 6.1m

The Watford stopper ranked second in the keeper rankings on 134 points last time around, despite conceding the fourth highest number of goals (49) in the top-flight. Delving into the data it’s easy to see why; three penalty saves, 11 clean sheets and 16 bonus points earned from a league-high 127 saves and an astonishing six Man of the Match awards (MoTM) tell the story. With Watford appearing to set up in a defensive 3-5-2 and with saves now further rewarded in this year’s Sky Sports offering, Gomes looks primed for another stellar campaign.

Jack Butland 6.4m

Despite missing the final seven matches due to injury, the Stoke stopper still finished seventh in the keeper rankings in his debut season in the top-flight. Butland picked up ten shut-outs, 16 bonus points and three MoTM awards last time out and, having returned to fitness over the summer, we expect further heroics as he looks to oust Joe Hart as England’s number one.

Fraser Forster 6.4m

The keeper’s return from injury was key to the resilience that saw Southampton deliver 12 clean sheets last time around. Forster conceded just 17 times in 18 league outings in 2015/16 and an average of 33 minutes per save highlights his propensity for picking up points as the Saints prepare for life under new manager Claude Puel.

Adrian 6.4m

The West Ham man is another who offers a steady source of saves. Adrian was joint-fifth for stops in 2015/16 despite missing six matches through injury, averaging a save every 30.1 minutes for Slaven Bilic’s side. The Spaniard saved two spot-kicks last term and has kept out five penalties over the last couple of campaigns – more than any number one in the top-flight.

Kasper Schmeichel 7.0m

Despite producing 15 clean sheets in Leicester’s title-winning season, their keeper comes in 1.0m less than the most expensive option (David de Gea) in goal. Add in 101 saves, which was joint-fifth in 2015/16, and there is a serious case for thinking Sky Sports have slightly undervalued Schmeichel. The loss of N’Golo Kante and European commitments could have a negative impact, of course, and is clearly worth monitoring. On the upside, Schmeichel looks far less likely to be rotated if Claudio Ranieri clicks into Tinkerman mode to cope with the schedule.

Petr Cech 7.5m

In his first season at Arsenal, the Czech was the highest scoring keeper in the game. Cech produced 148 points after arriving from Chelsea, thanks to a league-high 16 shut-outs and as many bonus points, second only to Mannone in save points. His propensity for saves arguably makes the Gunners’ number one the most appealing premium-priced option and with the addition of defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka affording Arsenal a robust presence in the centre of the park, more defensive returns look likely.

Joe Hart 7.7m

The England stopper is likely to remain the safest and cheapest route into a Man City defence which kept 16 clean sheets over the course of last season. Whilst Hart failed to churn out saves bonus (just four points), there’s a hope that new manager Pep Guardiola’s possession-based approach could bolster City’s defensive prospects after they leaked 41 goals in 2015/16. Hart’s erratic distribution is a concern, though – with Guardiola looking for his side to play out from the back, their number one has plenty of room for improvement.

David de Gea 8.0m

A price of 8.0m could be a bargain for a nailed-on member of Jose Mourinho’s rearguard. Man United kept 18 clean sheets and conceded just 35 goals in the previous campaign, the joint best alongside Tottenham, and with no European fixtures to contend with, they have every chance of matching that tally. Like Hart, though, the Spaniard’s main downfall is a lack of saves bonus (six points), which somewhat dents his prospects when compared to the likes of Cech at a similar price point.

Selection Tactics

Goalkeepers tend, on average, to be the lowest scorers of all the positions in the Sky Sports game. With more points earned from clean sheets this season, though, I would expect them to closely challenge and possibly exceed defenders’ relative scores this time around.

Wasting precious transfers swapping keepers has generally been a bad idea, given their low ceiling for points.

This time around, though, there seems more of a viable case to play the fixtures somewhat, rather than pick season-long selections.

Breaking the campaign down into two or three ‘phases’ of play and then selecting your keeper for each portion looks an efficient way to utilise this key position.

With Fab same price as Willian, I thought the latter more likely to start (and score points)

Chelsea defender, Mahrez (if still at Leicester) to Hazard for GW2

      Otherwise no Leicester
      - a bit over priced across the board and
      - stretched with Europe and
      - missing Kante and
      - a known entity this season and the bigger teams will set up to counter them a bit more

Have Hazard so far after the Euros, he needs to bounce back after last season. Willian should be a good shout and probably better value. No Leicester yet, but if Mahrez and Vardy kept up last season's form then they still won't be bad value for what you'd get.

Negredo isnt in the team right now. Long/Rondon/Negredo being considered. Whos your 6.5 choice?

Shaw and Gabriel not necessarily nailed and you can get in to either Man U of Arsenal defence with a keeper, Pieters has hard fixtures for the first month so you might want to go for a WBA defender or even Palace for 4.5, not sure Capoue will start but with Watfords rediculous fixtures that might be a good thing (Fletcher is your man if you want a cheap 5th mid that is likely to be a starter)

    Thoughts on this lot:

    Foster / Heaton
    Shaw / Walker / Naylor / Kone / Friend
    KDB / Ayew / Mirallas / Townsend / Fletcher
    Aguero / Ibra / Long

Only premium mid I'm interested in is KDB. And can always downgrade KDB/Ibra if they don't take-off.

Morning folks, I'd love to hear your input on this.

I've been wrestling with my choices for a fe days now, whether to try to cover the bases in terms of having attackers from the 'big teams' or just try to get the players I feel will score the highest points, regardless of their team.

It's practically impossible to get attacking players from Che, Liv, Mci, Mun, Ars, Tot.

It's about making choices between Payet and having a Mun mid, so Mhik/Martial... I honestly feel like the role Payet has in the Hammers team makes him a better choice.

Mahrez or Hazard - Mahrez is still looking unbelievable but is playing for a Leicester team that everybody thinks will drop off again this year, whereas Hazard is playing for a Chelsea with a new manager and looked like he had regained a bit of form in the Euro's... I believe that Mahrez looks the best bet.

I've decided on Sanchez because he's a point scoring machine when fit, which means no Ars, Che or Liv midfield and with the obvious need for Aguero in the strike force it leaves no money for the high priced strikers of UTD, Spurs, Che, Liv etc.

    My question is:
What are you basing your team around? Teams or individuals?

I'm looking at opening 6 weeks and teams with best start and then individuals from those teams.

      My biggest dilemma is Midfield.

      Mahrez/Hazard/Mhik/Eriksen.

      Can't decide on 2 from those 4.

I think I'll look at Payet after the first 3 GW. West Ham have a tough few opeining games + he'll be up and running by then after his break from Euros.

With regards to Mhik I am always wary of new premier league players. Will he take time to get used to pace etc.....

I think each manager has a different way to go about this. For me personally, I first pick out my "must-have"s (aka Kun, DDG and Mkhi for me). Then I find the "expendables" aka the cheap options that are sure starts (aka Friend, Evans, Bolasie, etc.). Then I decide what to do with the rest of the money. To answer your question tho, most of the times I lean more toward team and fixtures.

While Martial (as a mid) is tempting, we just don't know how he's going to fit in Mourinho's system. And it's Mhitaryan's first season in the PL, so both look punty.

While we all know everything about Payet and Mahrez: great key attacking players in teams that play good football.

Will Mourinho turn it around? Who knows. Will West Ham and Leicester continue to play decent football? Certainly.

      Stick with what you know.

against Galata there were signs that Mkhitaryan plays an advanced role, a sort of false 10 if you will.

so I'm sure he's gonna play and be one of the three key attacking players at United.

Martial (on the left) was nowhere to be seen though.

Ibra is in my team and that's enough United for now.

the title? I just don't know.

but even if they drop to the level of 5-7, they will still produce goals, win matches and play decent football. so far it's only Kante who's left.

Ideas badly needed. Been tinkering for over a week and still can't decide what's best

    DDG (Jaku)
    Shaw Terry Friend (Stones Evans)
    Mkhi Mahrez Bolasie Ayew (Leko)
    Kun Lukaku Long

I know 9.5 for a pair of keepers is a steep price but they rotate very well and I reckon this should be a long term investment as ManUtd should find clean sheets a much more frequent occurrence under Mou?

      A. Luka for now, but if Costa is fit and in form he is formidable
      B. Mahrez for me, esp if he stays at LEI. He has proven his ability there and will continue being their main focus of attack. Hazard had a few goals at the Euros but his overall performance was not very impressive. And the way Conte likes his team to play, I think, is more favourable for central attackers. Wingers under Conte have always played a more support role
      C. Townsend. Deulofeu probably won't start once the season's underway

FMori needs Stones to leave to be a good option.
Stones much better at City but sill decent option at Everton
Dawson solid pick but Foster 4.5 Evans 4.5 McAuley 4.5.
Williams decent but after first fixtures are awful. Is Williams really worth it over Fernandez/Naylor at 4.5?

Fairly template, I'm gonna knuckle down this week with the small stuff, I've the bigger decisions more/less made.
With the euros and Agee transfers still to be made, it's hard to settle on a 15 eg-do I want Mahrez @ Arsenal? Payet/Ozil/Sanchez still not played, Eriksen or Alli etc.
So hopefully this week reveals more info.

Filed under 'no one knows' IMO. Cos you can't use the argument that they paid lots of money to get him = spot in the starting XI. He'll be competing with Otamendi+Mangala

Going to need proof of improved finishing in front of goal to even consider him even if he does start the season with guaranteed game time.

Nolito>Yaya>Nasr>Fernandino>Sterling -- the other City mid options I'd consider before him.

With benteke still not playing preseason and still not moved on then the palace forward line is apparently in flux.
If fit and firing Campbell could be golden in pardews set up. Hugely gifted confidence player scoring at the moment in the friendlies.

    Oh, and a 4.5 striker

Watch Pardiola go crazy and play with strikerless formation with one of Sako, Bolaise, Zaha or Puncheon as a false 9.

    Real dilemma with Ibra.

Assuming you've got kun if you go with Ibra Mid is likely one Premium (10.5-9.5) plus 3 6.5-7.5s which looks risky to me. Without Ibra (with lukaku/Costa, maybe bent eke if he moves) you get 2 Premium mids and 2 7.5s which looks more balanced to me. Although a danger if Ibra gets off your a flyer you'll be priced out.

    What do people think?

At this stage I am on Mkhi although the CS could change my mind if Ibra does well. I feel like Mkhi will score similar to Ibra and will represent better value for money. Also with owning Aguero I feel like owning him and Ibra ruins the balance of cash too much.

Think that's the way I'm leaning too. Will definitely have mkhi and then need to decide between Hazel and mahrez.
