The Stock Check

Raheem Sterling starts the motors on another international break bandwagon, whilst Sergio Aguero may just have removed the wheels from his. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s pair of matches.

On the Rise

Raheem Sterling
We cited Sterling’s rise as a key element of Gameweek 3 in our recent Scout Mission and the City flyer duly delivered.

The two goals against West Ham, off the back of his pair of assists in the opening two Gameweeks, has now ensured that Sterling will enjoy huge interest from FPL investors over the international break.

Eden Hazard’s form and his own transfer traffic may divert from Sterling’s appeal but we’d expect further price rises before the Gameweek 4 derby clash with United.

At just 8.1, it’s difficult to argue against Sterling’s potential to at least challenge Mesut Ozil, Dimitri Payet and Riyad Mahrez in the 9.5 bracket.

Whether he’ll hit the heights of Hazard’s output remains doubtful but there’s no question that Sterling’s prospects have been significantly boosted by Pep Guardiola’s arrival.

David Silva
The crafty Spaniard undoubtedly played second fiddle to Sterling’s headline grabbing performance but his display was no less impressive.

We’ve almost overlooked what Silva can bring us a Fantasy asset and, in such a crowded midfield market, he’s unlikely to earn too much recognition.

However, he’s still a key factor in City’s defence and today’s showing highlighted that we can’t write him off.

Michail Antonio
Shifted from wing-back to an attacking role once again in the second half at the Etihad, Antonio again delivered via a far-post header. He has now scored eight headed goals since arriving in the Premier League.

Antonio’s rather withdrawn celebration on scoring may well have been targeted at Slaven Bilic, who must surely be getting the message that he needs to keep Antonio’s substantial presence in the final third.

Following the winning header against Bournemouth in Gameweek 2, Bilic remarked that he still intended to deploy Antonio in a defensive role as required. However, again today it became clear once again that the Hammers need his threat in the box.

With West Ham’s injury list clearing, Antonio certainly faces fierce competition for starts in an attacking role, so we should temper our enthusiasm. However, the potential of Antonio as a 7.0 midfield option is obvious – to Sam Allardyce and FPL managers at least.

The West Brom Defence
Tony Pulis’ rearguard became the only other side other than Manchester United to move to two clean sheets following the drab 0-0 stalemate at the Hawthorns.

Moreover, their persistent pursuit of goals from set-pieces was there for all to see.

Gareth McAuley, Craig Dawson and Jonny Evans will surely profit from further goals over the course of the season based on Sunday’s evidence.

The Baggies attack looked toothless, with Salomon Rondon isolated but, via dead-ball deliveries, their defenders look set to earn handsomely over the campaign.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The Argentine again mimicked Zlatan Ibrahimovic – this time mirroring his frustrating 2-point blank.

However, Aguero’s day could, conceivably, take on far more significance in the next 48-hours.

An errant swing of the arm, apparently missed by referee Andre Marriner, appeared to be aimed at West Ham’s Winston Reid who was later replaced with an injury apparently sustained in the clash.

There is already much debate on the likely consequence of Aguero’s act, with plenty of uncertainty on whether the incident was seen and will be present in Mariner’s report.

If it’s not, the FA may choose to review the footage and could then follow this up by taking retrospective action.

There is a very real possibility that Aguero will face a charge of violent conduct that would see him receive a three-match ban.

That would rule him out of the Gameweek 4 Manchester derby and the Gameweek 5 trip to Bournemouth. Aguero would serve the third match in the EFL Cup tie with Swansea City.

This is all premature, however. We can only wait on news from the FA once the referee’s report is submitted on Monday.

Kevin De Bruyne
Despite delivering a second assist of the season, the Belgian’s undoubted Fantasy potential appears to be subdued by his new central role, reducing his ability to provide open play crosses and cut inside to shoot from range.

With Sterling flourishing today, it seems unfeasible to attempt to justify De Bruyne’s lofty 10.5 price tag compared to his 8.1 and even Silva’s 8.9.

The Man City Defence
Guardiola’s defence were breached for the third game running with the 34% owned John Stones again disappointing.

Stones was withdrawn after suffering an eye problem with the City boss reassuring us post-match that tiredness, rather than an injury was the factor behind his removal. Even so, given City’s lack of clean sheets to this point, Stones looks set to suffer significant sales over the international break.

Dimitri Payet
A prolonged absence will lead to further sales as the Frenchman falls well behind the race for a slot as our heavy-hitting midfielder.

That market has now become so competitive, Payet will surely have to produce some early brilliance, once fit, to enter the race.

Bilic has indicated that Payet should return after the international break but his remaining owners are unlikely to see that out given the in-form talent in his price bracket.

Salomon Rondon
A forlorn figure leading the line for West Brom today, the Venezuelan’s potential appears to be strangled by the Baggies’ current lack of attacking ambition.

Pulis is promising plenty of signings in the window. Rondon must hope that many of them inject some much needed attacking urgency.

Nacer Chadli appears to be the first through the door.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hazard Martial Townsend Redmond Capoue

Taking into account what you wanted I'd go to:

      Heaton Foster
      Valencia Stones Friend Evans Amat
      Hazard Carzola Sterling Redmond Capoue
      Lukaku Ibra Negredo

I'm also not a fan of keeper rotation so I'd actually swap Heaton for Foster and Stones for Baines.

gl getting Aguero back though is all.

      No.

They're so good at attacking that they leave themselves wide open at times. They don't actually concede many chances but when they do it's usually a good one.

Of course City leave themselves open at times, but to say a new and better keeper won't increase the chances of a clean sheet is truly ridiculous. The exact same can be said about Barca yet he managed 7 clean sheets in a row, and don't give me nonsense about 'but Barca have a better defence!!!".

He's probably a slightly better keeper, but I think the way the team plays and the number of chances they give away has a lot more to do with keeping clean sheets.

Right, and having a world class keeper instead of a mediocre keeper to deal with those chances will increase the chance of a clean sheet. It's not even an argument it's a fact.

Well yeah I agree, but just saying that they'll probably still leak a fair amount of goals if the first 3 matches are anything to go by.

Yeah that's the issue, but you have to think a 30 million transfer away from Lisbon, a club he loves more than anything, surely he is guaranteed first team football? I think with the Champions League though coming up for Leicester he could well be rotated. I will gamble on him anyway if he is 8.0 or below! 🙂

Am I crazy to W/C this team?
    Foster/Jakupovic
    Valencia Stones McAuley Friend Amat
    Hazard Barkley Tadic Redmond Fletcher
    Aguero Ibrahimovic Negredo
    1.2ITB 1FT

I’m looking at doing the following:
    Tadic > Ozil
    Barkley > Sterling
    Fletcher > Capoue
    Stones > Shaw (or Terry)
    Friend > Holgate
    Negredo > Diomande

Giving me a W/C team of:
    Foster/Jakupovic
    Valencia SHAW HOLGATE McAuley Amat
    Hazard OZIL STERLING Redmond CAPOUE
    Aguero Ibrahimovic DIOMANDE

Yeah Tadic > Sterling is possible.

Thing is, if one of the new players rise (which they will tonight) I can't afford that team. So it's a now or never decision 🙁

Your team is in adequate shape to be honest. These transfers aren't desperate, you have a team set up well for after the break.

Imo you're bandwagoning a bit too hard - Problem with Holgate is Coleman is due back after the break. Find a more nailed 4.5. And Diomande has scored one goal, you're doing it to squeeze out the rest of the team and it leaves you choosing between Capoue or Diomande each week. You're left with a team pretty unbalanced.

Stay calm, it,s okay to let 0.1 or 0.2 go by when your team is just fine for the main job of scoring points.

So Aguero is only out for 2 games (assuming he gets a 3 match ban). Now wildcard now. It is difficult to get him back in.

Therefore, the best bet may be to transfer him out for a big hitter and leave the cash in the bank to transfer him back in 2 weeks time. It also gives you the chance to pick any striker in FPL as captain in Manchester derby weekend (quite possibly a tight, low scoring affair).

    1. Demel
      • 14 Years

Because you can bring in a heavy hitter for 2 weeks up front. If you use the cash you will need to free up cash to bring him back. That will take points hits.

Any transfers that stand out to you guys? Kinda want Sterling but feel that I need to get rid of Tadic and not enough cash to do a straight swap

    Foster Jak
    Valencia Stones McAuley Pieters Friend
    Hazard Barkley Tadic Ramirez Capoue
    Aguero Ibra Benteke

    1 FT
    0.4 itb

    Cheers

I never bother with OR much..I take a hit a week and try to win my family mini league in doing so and that's about as far as I go...

I always consider OR a bit destructive in terms of playing the game for a bit of fun.

So far tonight haven't seen a single poster say something to the effect of "I'm 20 pts ahead in my mini league should I take a (-8)"

I'm only in a mini league of three this year with my brother and my son. One is in a further league with his works whilst the other in a league with his school...both of them think exactly in terms of "I'm 20 pts ahead in my mini league should I take a (-8)"..

Is it a better way to play the game ?

It always depends what the hit is. It needs to have a better than 50% chance that it will benefit you in the short/medium term....or even long term if it involves transfer value.

It's an interesting thing isn't it...a different game altogether.

The smaller the league the more dog eat dog it becomes. My brother and son don't have Sterling..nor do I...what does it matter to us what he did today ?...and does it matter if none of us bring him in ?

        I'm not sure Parm

I wrote in the summer how my son watches footy whilst he has his IPAD connected to his mates and they all take the p out of each other.

I'm absolutely telling you they have a right old good time of it...

I've always thought that way. This is the first season it's worked. I was leading by a good 15 or so points so I took a -8 to bring in Sterling, McAuley, and Shaw for Firmino, Friend, and Baines. 🙂 Suddenly 15 point gap has become 29. 🙂

But if you then only have to catch up a few other folk (who you know might have a crap team) then it's not much over a season.

It's no good if you want a high OR though.

I've been on that OR treadmill a few times in the past. Taking a hit a week is almost like a bit of self sabotage to stop it happening again.

At the moment i'm 2 pts ahead of my brother and 10 ahead of my son...a (-8) matters not a jot at this stage...

I'm actually happy at the amount of firmino sales. I want him in my team but can't afford. Him being sold in masses and an aguero ban opens up the possibility a bit.

Hazard when on form is incredible. But I'd say aguero is the most must have in the league. City will very likely be the top scoring squad and he'll get a lions share of this provided he stays healthy

Fuchs, Barkley, Gray -> Shaw/Walker, Sterling, Negredo (-4)?

Should I activate my WC to improve this team? 2FT & 0.0 ITB.

    Heaton

    Shaw MCauley Friend

    Redmon Townsend Hazard Mahrez

    Ibra Kun Rondon

    Foster Stones Amat Hojberg

I have always saved my WC for nearer the end of the season, only once used it around Nov/Dec time in the last 7 years of playing this game so feels like a bit of a waste to use it so early.

Yes but the second one you can only use in Jan, or around then.

Cheers though, maybe you are right and I can just use the FT's on Kun and Mahrez out and get some other big hitters in over the coming days with other price rises. 🙂
