Following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel during pre-season, Arsenal were keen to strengthen their options at centre-back. On Tuesday, the Gunners finally confirmed the signing of Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth up to £35 million.

The 24-year-old has penned a long-term contract at the Emirates and, speaking to the club’s official website, gave an insight into what type of defender we can expect to see:

“Right now I would say that I’m quite an aggressive player. I go into everything, that’s what I learnt in England. But on the other side, I’m quite tactical. I try to read the game, like you do in Italy. With the ball, I try to play out and enjoy having the ball, not just giving it away as soon as you get it.”

Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, reckons the new boy’s previous experience of life in England should serve him well:

“He is a very intelligent boy, that was important in my decision as well. He is very focused as I told you, and he knows the rigorous climate of the Premier League and how much you have to fight for every game. I know as well he is a very focused player who can play with the ball as well. That is important for us, and all this quality made me decide to try and get him. The player wanted to join us as well, and I think he will hopefully be happy here and will enforce our squad. It puts us in a good position”.

The History

Mustafi’s big break came when he joined Hamburg’s youth set-up at the age of 14. He spent three years at the German side before moving to Everton in 2009.

The defender was handed his professional debut for the Toffees in a Europe League match against BATE Borisov in December 2009, but failed to make a Premier League appearance for the club, leading his departure from Goodison Park in January 2012 to join Italian outfit Sampdoria.

Mustafi only made one Serie B appearance during the rest of the 2011/12 campaign as Sampdoria gained promotion back to Serie A, but began to force his way into the first-team squad the following season, racking up 17 league appearances, gaining one assist.

The 2013/14 season saw Mustafi establish himself as a regular starter for Sampdoria, totalling 33 Serie A matches, which yielded a goal and an assist. His performances caught the eye of Spanish side Valencia, who splashed out around €8 million for his services in August 2014.

Over the past two seasons, Mustafi has been a mainstay of the Valencia side, making 63 league appearances, scoring six goals and claiming two assists.

Mustafi featured for Germany through all the age groups from Under 16 to Under 21, making 61 appearances in total, impressively scoring 11 goals. He made his senior debut against Poland in May 2014. The centre-back was part of the 2014 World Cup winning squad and also featured in Euro 2016. He currently has 12 caps to his name, and has scored one goal, coming in the 2-0 win over Ukraine in the opening match of Euro 2016.

The Prospects

Given the sizeable outlay, it’s expected the German defender will be the first choice partner for Laurent Koscielny at the heart of the Arsenal defence.

That looks to have ended Rob Holding’s chances of retaining a starting berth, with Mertesacker and Gabriel likely to be consigned to back-up roles upon their returns from injury.

With the Gunners keeping 18 clean sheets last term, the joint-most in the top flight alongside Man United, there’s little doubt members of Arsenal’s backline are extremely attractive options for Fantasy managers. A new defender was clearly needed following the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening weekend, while they also conceded at Watford in Gameweek 3.

The German international has been handed a 6.0 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same as Koscielny and Nacho Monreal, with Hector Bellerin the most expensive Arsenal defender at 6.5.

Looking at the underlying statistics for all four defenders from last season, it was Mustafi who offered the greatest goal threat, averaging a shot every 121.9 minutes, better than Koscielny (157.6), Bellerin (262.5) and Monreal (285.4).

In terms of CBI numbers, Mustafi led the way for interceptions, making one every 20.2 minutes last term, slightly better than Koscielny (23.8), although the France international was slightly more impressive in terms of clearances, averaging one every 15.4 minutes, compared to every 16.8 minutes for the former Valencia player.

Bellerin and Monreal obviously offer superior assist potential from the full-back positions, having registered six and three respectively last term, but the mixture of set-piece threat and bonus point potential keeps Mustafi and Koscielny in the mix, particularly with Bellerin 0.5 more expensive than the pair. The right-back is currently the most owned Arsenal defender in FPL, boasting a vast ownership of 27.1%.

Petr Cech is, of course, a cheaper option at 5.5, but with plenty of value available in the goalkeeper position, he may struggle to garner too much attentions.

Arsenal’s fixtures (SOT, hul, CHE, bur, SWA, MID, sun) are very favourable over the coming period, so owning a Gunners defender could well prove to be worthwhile at this point in the season.

Having scored seven goals over the last two seasons, and given his standing as the first choice centre-back, Koscielny may at this juncture provide the safer bet for FPL bosses. The underlying statistics suggest Mustafi could rival the Frenchman in that department – particularly if referees continue to clamp down on holding in the box, allowing the German more leeway to attack set-pieces from close-range.

You didn't miss anything as it was dull as ditchwater.

However, he defended very well, had a good attempt on target, one cross nearly converted and looked very comfortable in a sea of relative dross.

          My WBA defender rankings are:

          Galloway
          McAuley
Evans (simply due to injury proneness)

I honestly think it's Galloway's spot to lose and Brunt's never been a conventional left back - he only played there due to lack of alternatives. Besides, Brunt's still recovering, McAuley's shot up and JEvans is a niggle waiting to happen.

just watching, it is easy to come to that conclusion.

but i remember feeling the same way last year after watching him play left back for Everton.
he looked the same as he does now, really terrific. and then, one week, he was gone. not
          hurt, just not playing.

the problem is. when you pick a 4.5 defender, you want him to be good on your roster
for a long time and not come back to him because all of a sudden he's no longer playing.
there are always more serious issues to deal with.

yes, Evans is always an injury concern. yes, McCauley is 37 years old -- but Pulis knows
          and trusts them.

          it's a tough one.

          1. devils advocate
            • 11 Years
            9 years, 6 months ago

            It's not tough at all.

The reason he disappeared at Everton is because he was never first choice ahead of Baines regardless of how good he was. He disappeared as you said because Baines returned from injury. Not tough, simple you see. 😉

He was allowed to leave Everton because he still was only backup to Baines and WB have needed a specialist LB for some time. Galloway is that player and will be 100% nailed on at WB. Brunt is not a left back and nor is Evans.

Galloway's arrival will also allow Pulis to play his best CB pairing which should be McAuley and Evans. Nyom should fill the RB spot and also a good option at 4.4mil.

              thanks.

it's sure something to think about. he really gets forward with intent.

if the other DB's on West Brom were not goal threats themselves, it would be a no-brainer.

Any reason why so many are considering Zaza?

He has a terrible goal record from what I can see, could hardly get a game at Juventus, and obviously won't get anywhere near taking a penalty.

Surely he's way overpriced at 7mil?

                  Oh, ok. 🙂

In my opinion it is still a factor that affects some players more than others.

It's no secret that the premier league is a much faster and slightly more physical league in general to the Italian league, so how quickly a player can adapt is all up to that individual.

It's also not like Zaza was coming from another league as a stand out star either.

I think it's definitely a factor. Just ask Shevchenko, lol.

Besides Dybala none of the others were nailed and whilst Morata was class when he played, Mandzukic was terrible.

My point is if Zaza was that good to become an instant hit in the premier league he would of played more at Juve and he didn't. If you're good enough you play regardless of who else is at the club.

I'm not saying he can't do well for WH, all I'm saying is it seems way too early to jump on him straight away considering all the factors and he's not that cheap either.

Awkward price point to replace as well if he does flop.

Its because I have money from replacing kun, will downgrade when he's back, and arsenal's fixtures till then are tasty

Not a fan. Don't double on Arsenal defence, downgrade Bellerin. Leko and Capoue is a no-no, upgrade Leko.

I have landed on a pretty awesome wc team that is bound to make my head explode weekly:

        Foster heaton
        Valencia Baines jaanmat Kobe Amat
        Hazard ozil firmino sterling Antonio
        Lukaku benteke bony

Bony benched gw4 while he is eased in in a tough fixture
Then in gw5 I play all out attack
Then sterling and lukaku can easy become 4.5 and kun

        Can it work?

My advice is to avoid that type of benching nightmare, if you don't want to visit the emergency psychiatry 😉

Play any formation you want, captain who you want, in fact, just live and be free.

But never give yourself a benching conundrum of that magnitude.

Excellent....That's exactly the front line I'm driving towards.

Be warned though....I've done those sorts of teams before and you'll struggle. Not because it's a poor team but because of a lack of a dependable captain. I'm only doing it because I don't want the same Ibra/Aguero team as my two rivals....

T's only for the less serious amongst us.

That moment when every key player gets injured on international duty, and we all realise how futile a week spent agonising over the distribution of 0.1- 0.2m has been.

Screw it. I am getting Remy. Surely he just replaces Wickham in the 4-4-1-1 formation. He would also want guarantees he would play as what the hell would be the point in going on loan.

I like Remy, was at his best under Pardew too. Unsure whether I'll get him for GW4 though.

Pretty sure he will play tbh. It is not like they have an abundance of talent there and I rate Remy.

I think he will too, but I won't be surprised if it takes a while for him to nail down his spot. Could be a bench impact player to start with.

Yeh it is a risk but think I will take it. Means I can get Antonio instead of a 6M mid. If it is a choice between playing Remy or Wickham I am hoping Pards sees its an easy choice 🙂

Is it a good strategy to double up on both WH & EVE for their upcoming fixtures or is it too risky?
Wildcard team below leaving me 1.9m itb to help bring back Kun:

              Foster / Pickford

              Baines / Masuaka / Evans / Shaw / Amat

              Hazard / Cazorla / Antonio / Sterling / Capoue

With Coleman back in training with Northern Ireland do you think he will immediately replace Holgate for the next fixture or will Holgate be shifted elsewhere within Everton side given he is playing well?

I was going to do WC but I clocked that all I'm really doing is trying to get sterling in and his next game is man U away. What I can do I just transfer aguero out for lukaku. Then wait until after gw4 and get sterling.

Simple. I think its too risky to WC unnecessarily. esp when U don't need to. I'm on 183 points so if it ain't broken don't fix it and I'm sure a lot of people are in this position but just wanna WC for the sake of it.

Lukaku and Teke for me. I'm actually still not completely sold on Chelsea and they have two tough fixtures. Prefer the Belgians over Costa in general as well (yellows, no bonus etc)

Thoughts on my current WC team lads:

Foster/Pickford (Why is Pickford yellow now?)

                          Valencia-Baines-McAuley-Friend-Amat

                          Hazard-Sanchez-Sterling-Cazorla-Capoue

                          Ibra-Lukaku-Diamonde

1.1 ITB. Good, or what moves to make? Lukaku or Costa? Downgrade someone to upgrade Santi to Ozil? I am deff getting Aguero back in when he is ready, even if I have to take a -4, I am not worried about getting him back in.

Does bellerin out score most/ all 6.5 mids? He got 170 last season, Cb and cm has been strengthened so if he gets 140-170 is he worth the outlay?

Was going to try scrape through the GW with my 1FT, however now Pickford injured and Gray ban potentially imminent, the WC button has to be pressed.

Maybe... not sure Pickford is out and I reckon Stones and Friend should be fine. But it's as good as time as any.

Pickford was only withdrawn as a caution, should be fit. The problem is if Sunderland get granted that special disposition by the fa to sign another keeper

                                        This.

Definitely worth the wait imo, you can ship Aguero once ban confirmed if price falling is an issue, then WC later if necessary.

West Ham not having a good defensive mid is putting me off..

Anyone else think a good defence depends a lot on a good DM

They limited BOU to very few half chances tbf and have a nice run now.

                                  Exhibit A

                                  Kante .

Leicester defence isn't as good as it was last year meanwhile Chelsea defence looks good even with terry and Cahill playing.

I think nearly every good defence is based upon a good keep and CDM, if they have both the chances are much higher.

                                    West Ham don't have either

I wouldn't say depends on it but it's just common sense isn't it, better defensive mid helps the defence.

Obviously not 100% but I think it has a large say on how well the defence should do

Definitely agree, improves the likelihood of a cs. E.G I think Chelsea defence is not all that good apart from Azpi but with Kante and Matic in front they should rack up cs

It helps - Spurs were pretty good defence wise before they got Wanyama and I can understand people wanting Chelsea with Kante. Likewise Southampton and Leicester may now get the cleanies.

Spurs had Dier last year... There seems to be a correlation.
