We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your views on the favourites for the armband in Gameweek 4.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

This week’s poll looks to be the most difficult to predict so far this season, with previous frontrunner Sergio Aguero starting a three match ban, after being found guilty of violent conduct during Manchester City’s Gameweek 3 home tie with West Ham. Already more than 315,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have jettisoned the Argentine.

In his absence, Arsenal’s resurgent midfield stars look set to take centre stage.

With a 16-point haul away to Watford in Gameweek 3, Alexis Sanchez (11.0) certainly has the form and has already been drafted in ahead of Gameweek 4 by more than 122,000 FPL managers, to take his ownership to 11.1%.

Aguero’s ban has surely played a part in his growing popularity, with funds from the attack being redistributed into midfield and heading in the Chilean’s direction. The home tie against Southampton also gives Sanchez an ideal fixture for his new owners to offer him the armband.

Mesut Ozil (9.5) is another midfield Gunner edging back to former glories.

His goal against Watford has boosted his ownership by more than 67,000 so far during the international break, making him another strong captaincy option. Again, the Aguero funds will be a factor here, with thousands turning to the German as a cheaper alternative to the Sanchez option.

Arguably, Manchester City’s trip to Old Trafford for Saturday’s early kick-off may have seen Aguero slip down the captaincy pecking order regardless of his availability.

This testing fixture is certain to dent the prospects of United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8), another popular pick over the previous three Gameweeks and owned by 58.7% of FPL managers. Nevertheless, with City failing to keep a Premier League clean sheet so far this season and the big Swede scoring twice in his previous home clash, he could still be savvy selection.

Wayne Rooney (9.0), is another candidate for those who see goals in Manchester, particularly as The Red Devils’ captain’s tally of 11 goals is a derby record.

Chelsea players are likely to be popular armband options when they travel to Swansea City.

With a goal and 11 FPL points in Gameweek 3, Eden Hazard (10.2) cemented his place as the most reliable source of midfield points so far this season. Considering he has delivered attacking returns over all three of his Premier League matches this term it is little wonder that his FPL ownership has surged by more than 183,000 over the international break. Now found in over 30.4% of squads, he is the second highest owned midfielder in FPL behind Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho (30.7%).

Diego Costa, who has scored five times against the Swans in the last two seasons and has been recruited by more than 131,000 new FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 4, is another strong captaincy pick. But be warned, the FPL bonus point system is not a fan. Despite delivering attacking returns on all three Premier League games this season the 9.7 priced striker has yet to register bonus point rewards.

This could certainly be a Gameweek to consider a differential option. Fortunately, recent transfer activity has presented us with a couple of prime candidates, with two prolific Premier League strikers looking to impress at new clubs.

Christian Benteke (7.4), who has signed for Crystal Palace, has 51 goals over four Premier League seasons, at Aston Villa and Liverpool. With an away trip to Middlesbrough the 3.7% owned forward could be about to reward his 25,000 new FPL owners.

Wilfried Bony (7.3), meanwhile, has swapped Manchester City’s bench for a likely starting role on loan at Stoke, and represents an intriguing differential armband selection at home against a lacklustre Spurs side. Over his three Premier League campaigns the 1.1% owned striker has scored 32 times.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind crop of contenders.

Don't think so. Red flag removal gets price protection, all flag removals resets the %.

Noticed some comments suggesting James Collins is a risk, have I missed something? Played 90 mins in every game so far, doesn't appear to be under threat... Even played the full 90 last week with both Ogbonna and Reid on the pitch.

      1. The Tinkerman
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

So what is the reason people think he is threatened? The only thing I can think of is that with Arbeloa in the side they might shift Ogbonna/Reid to CB (can't remember who played wider) and Collins might lose his place.

        1. The Tinkerman
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 10 months ago

Ah, it was three at the back. So Ogbonna is the threat if they go back to 4 at the back. As you say, it's Collins' place to lose as it stands.

    2. UnitedFan
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 10 months ago

Ogbonna should eventually take back the place. He still played last week because they played 3 at the back, which isn't going to be a regular thing

For anyone still interested, you can compare how Reid/Ogbonna/Collins have been interchanged last season here:
      http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-collins/leistungsdaten/spieler/12691/plus/0?saison=2015
      http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/angelo-ogbonna/leistungsdaten/spieler/48002/plus/0?saison=2015
      http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/winston-reid/leistungsdaten/spieler/37526/plus/0?saison=2015

The pecking order changes with injuries, but seems to be Reid, Collins, Ogbonna right now.

    6. Bubz
      • 12 Years

iv been asking this too. Apparently Ogbonna is first choice ahead of him, he was all last season. But Ogbonna returned from Euros late so Collins played instead. Collins played last week because of 3 at the back

      1. The Tinkerman
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

Italy got knocked out before Wales? Ogbonna only appeared in one group game in the entire tournament, Collins played twice and started the semi final, therefore leaving later than Ogbonna. So it doesn't look like those reasons are correct.

I'd suggest Vardy, although his fixtures are tough but u expect him to score. Giroud would be a differential. He's a very streaky player but he had a good euros and he's match fit again. Arsenal have a good run of fixtures as well with most of the team fit.

Lamela scoring and Kane blanking was predicted in a pre-season analysis posted on here by looking at the stats and the roles the Spurs players have when Dembele is and isn't on the pitch. I can't remember who posted it, but the Dembele effect isn't a myth nor does Dembele actually make Kane better, it was about the roles and as it happened, the first 3 weeks went exactly as that poster assumed. There are 2 crucial factors to be considered though, Janssen and Sissoko.

Honestly non of them excite. Lukaku prob interests me most but worrying that he says he's not match fit yet.

Doesn't costa have a good record against Swansea? At least he did last year. Might be worth costa.

    --------------Heaton--------------
    ----Evans-Valencia-Friend---
    Hazard-Sterling-Redmond-Firmino
    -------Aguero--Ibra--Gray------

    Subs - Jaku - Kone - Capoe - Amat

Should I just do Aguero > Lukaku/Tekkers for -4 or WC to this team?

    ---Baines-Valencia-Evans---
    Hazard-Sterling-Sanchez-Antonio
    -----Tekkers--Bony--Ibra------

Agreed, no need to WC at all. You'd def be better off waiting for Aguero to return at the earliest before activating it.

      Unanswerable question. Merits to both.

With aguero injury and lack of quality replacements, 3-5-2 probably optimum at this moment in time.

    Heaton/Robbo

    Hazard-Sanchez-Lamela-Antonio-Hojbjerg

Obvious missing pieces are Zlatan, and Mane/another Liv mid.

    £1.7 ITB so Aguero plan is Sanchez/Costa - Ozil/Aguero

Harry Kane is bang-out-of-form but he's got decent fixtures. Everybody looking at Benteke at a new club,an unproven Zaza at a new club and an almost equally bang-out-of-form and perenial supreme leader of FPL point-dodging Romelu Lukaku.

All I'm saying, maybe Kane should be in the 'Aguero replacement' conversation?

    1. Ghost Ship
      • 15 Years

Personally believe form is far more important than fixtures. Yes of course he could explode, but he is too expensive to come with such a risk of blanking.

for aguero replacement I think this is the best order

      lukaku (fixtures)

Costa (form ) downside is his yc and no bonus points

benteke ( cant shake the feeling that he will be scoring a headed goal this or next weekend)

      Defoe (proven n pk)
vardy ( fixtures n pk too)
Kane (bang out of form n looks fatigued)
      bony zaza punts

      would you agree??

Benteke hasn't looked good since he's come back either. He was poor at Liverpool. He's been out of form for over a year.

This is such a myth. He was poor at Liverpool because he couldn't fit their style - and yet he still scored 9 goals in 29 appearances (and 14 of those were as a sub).
