We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your views on the favourites for the armband in Gameweek 4.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

This week’s poll looks to be the most difficult to predict so far this season, with previous frontrunner Sergio Aguero starting a three match ban, after being found guilty of violent conduct during Manchester City’s Gameweek 3 home tie with West Ham. Already more than 315,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have jettisoned the Argentine.

In his absence, Arsenal’s resurgent midfield stars look set to take centre stage.

With a 16-point haul away to Watford in Gameweek 3, Alexis Sanchez (11.0) certainly has the form and has already been drafted in ahead of Gameweek 4 by more than 122,000 FPL managers, to take his ownership to 11.1%.

Aguero’s ban has surely played a part in his growing popularity, with funds from the attack being redistributed into midfield and heading in the Chilean’s direction. The home tie against Southampton also gives Sanchez an ideal fixture for his new owners to offer him the armband.

Mesut Ozil (9.5) is another midfield Gunner edging back to former glories.

His goal against Watford has boosted his ownership by more than 67,000 so far during the international break, making him another strong captaincy option. Again, the Aguero funds will be a factor here, with thousands turning to the German as a cheaper alternative to the Sanchez option.

Arguably, Manchester City’s trip to Old Trafford for Saturday’s early kick-off may have seen Aguero slip down the captaincy pecking order regardless of his availability.

This testing fixture is certain to dent the prospects of United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8), another popular pick over the previous three Gameweeks and owned by 58.7% of FPL managers. Nevertheless, with City failing to keep a Premier League clean sheet so far this season and the big Swede scoring twice in his previous home clash, he could still be savvy selection.

Wayne Rooney (9.0), is another candidate for those who see goals in Manchester, particularly as The Red Devils’ captain’s tally of 11 goals is a derby record.

Chelsea players are likely to be popular armband options when they travel to Swansea City.

With a goal and 11 FPL points in Gameweek 3, Eden Hazard (10.2) cemented his place as the most reliable source of midfield points so far this season. Considering he has delivered attacking returns over all three of his Premier League matches this term it is little wonder that his FPL ownership has surged by more than 183,000 over the international break. Now found in over 30.4% of squads, he is the second highest owned midfielder in FPL behind Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho (30.7%).

Diego Costa, who has scored five times against the Swans in the last two seasons and has been recruited by more than 131,000 new FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 4, is another strong captaincy pick. But be warned, the FPL bonus point system is not a fan. Despite delivering attacking returns on all three Premier League games this season the 9.7 priced striker has yet to register bonus point rewards.

This could certainly be a Gameweek to consider a differential option. Fortunately, recent transfer activity has presented us with a couple of prime candidates, with two prolific Premier League strikers looking to impress at new clubs.

Christian Benteke (7.4), who has signed for Crystal Palace, has 51 goals over four Premier League seasons, at Aston Villa and Liverpool. With an away trip to Middlesbrough the 3.7% owned forward could be about to reward his 25,000 new FPL owners.

Wilfried Bony (7.3), meanwhile, has swapped Manchester City’s bench for a likely starting role on loan at Stoke, and represents an intriguing differential armband selection at home against a lacklustre Spurs side. Over his three Premier League campaigns the 1.1% owned striker has scored 32 times.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind crop of contenders.

Sorry Jonty but there's no way James Collins is nailed on. If West Ham play 4 at the back, which they're likely to do, he's competing with Ogbonna, who was ahead of Collins all of last season. Isn't the only reason Collins started ahead of Ogbonna at the start of the season because Ogbonna arrived back from the Euros late?

I am very tempted by Collins on my WC but it seems risky to me

yep agree with this. Collins has started the season well but i wouldn't say he is nailed. Og and Reid just as likely to start.

didn't Jonty just say he's 'nailed on in his wc squad', rather than being nailed on in the WH team?

I missed that full-stop, so yeah, I definitely wouldn't say he's nailed on. It's James Collins, he's a bang average player (being generous here), always 1 game away from being dropped.

don't get it, utd have the best keeper in the world and probably the best center back pairing in the league along with one of the best left backs and a very good right back. Jose in charge. you cant get another 5.5 attacking wing back that offers more cs potential. 2 might be a bit much some games but over the season its going to work out.

AWAY to Slovakia as if that's a hard tie. Drew 0-0 to them in the Euro's when it mattered most.

The sad truth is that England just doesn't have the players to compete. It's been this way for a generation. The manager does not really matter

This. Compare the team to Spain, France, Germany and you'll see where they stand realistically. At the moment no other Englishman except for Kane is the best player in a top team.

What has to be considered is that there are hardly any elite players in that team, even Hodgson's had very good results in the qualifications, so as long as Sam gets them to the WC and manages to come out of that group, he's good. England should've achieved quarterfinals in the Euros only to be knocked out by France, that was the expectation and what flushed Hodgson away were his unlogical choices throughout the tournament.

Hodgson was clueless, The FA are inept and a bunch of parasites. Nothing has changed.

Rooney has not performed in a tournament since 2004.

I had hoped Allardyce would be different but sadly since the late 90s the england international team have been awful and I see this continuing.

I actually hope they dont qualify for Russia, there is no point in an England team going until the FA change everything.

Yes, but what do you expect with the players they've got? They're not going to win the World Cup anytime soon and such luck that Portugal's had is only possible once in 10 years.

I had him down as a no bs manager who like us, Would have sat there watching the terrible euros display thinking, if I was in charge id do xyz differently.

From his comments, it's clear that maybe Rooney runs the team atm...Drop Rooney, play a similar team that brought the game to Germany during that 3-2 win we had before the Euro's.

I wonder how long we will keep saying Kane is just out of form and exhausted? If it gets to Christmas for example can we start to re-evaluate whether he's a top PL player? He has only really shone for 1.5 seasons afterall

      1. pompeyfan
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

depends on what type of player they are and how you are judging them.

I'd say that Kane is a decent striker, but to say he's a great striker I'd want to see more consistency of performance.

If I watch someone and see they are really technically great then I guess I judge them quicker, but with Kane he doesn't have a great technique (yet) or do very much apart from score goals, which is fine of course, he's a striker. Also why I don't think he works in the number 10 position

        1. KingNidge
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

You're talking out of your hoop to be quite honest.. he is asked to play in a deeper position precisely because he has much more to his game than scoring goals... he can hold up the ball pick out a pass and has superb technique.. he may be going through a tough period as many young players do but 46 goals in 72 league games is a phenomenal return by anyones standards

          1. pompeyfan
            • 16 Years
            9 years, 6 months ago

if his technique was 'superb' he wouldn't be so appalling at set pieces and miss-place so many passes.

I know my view is unpopular so will agree to disagree

I traded Aguero for Kane last week cause I was afraid to loose value. But I regret my choice. Should have gone with Lukaku.
    Anyway now I have:

    De Gea / Shmichael

    Friend / Stones / Collins / Williams / Amat

    Lamela / Hazard / Redmond / Townsend / Xhaka

    Gray / Kane / Ibra

    2.1 in bank

I am tempted to get a double hit for bring in Ozil and King for Townsend and Xhaka but maybe that is being too desperate?

Actually this is not doable. I would have to give up Townsand (or redmond) and Lamela to get Ozil and King for -8
