After a fortnight’s hiatus, it’s time to roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, offering insight on the armband conundrum ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.

We’ll assess the main candidates on offer, analyse the Opta numbers and check up on the Rate My Team ratings before offering up a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

A three-match suspension prevents Sergio Aguero from having the chance to top the captain poll for the fourth successive round of fixtures.

The Man City striker’s three-match ban has prompted a two-way tussle at the Gameweek 4 summit, with Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez duking it out with 25% and 24% respectively after returning double-figure hauls last time around.

Hazard has produced points in all three of his appearances under Antonio Conte and sits at the top of the FPL player standings. Next up for the Belgian is a trip to a Swansea outfit that were beaten 2-0 by Hull in their previous Liberty encounter.

After racking up 16 points away to Watford, the Chilean has risen back to his initial price of £11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and faces a home encounter with a Southampton side yet to chalk up a clean sheet.

The small matter of a Manchester derby means Zlatan Ibrahimovic collects just 18% of the votes cast. With Aguero sidelined for the visitors, the big Swede will be looking to steal the headlines as Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola do battle for the first time in England.

Handed a rest over the international break, Zlatan netted twice in his previous home outing and has now reached over 60% ownership in FPL.

With Sanchez and Hazard regarded as the main contenders for Arsenal and Chelsea, their respective team-mates, Mesut Ozil and Diego Costa, remain under the armband radar.

Both found the net last time around, with Costa continuing his fine domestic form by bagging two goals and an assist for Spain over the last week or so.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku also netted twice in the recent internationals and could be a real differential option with just 4% votes ahead of Monday’s trip to Sunderland.

Alvaro Negredo – the most transferred in player in FPL this season – has convinced 2% to back him with the armband as Middlesbrough prepare to entertain Palace.

West Ham duo Dimitri Payet and Michail Antonio – with just 1.7% and 0.7% – are also shaping up to be viable armband alternatives at home to a Watford side that has already shipped six goals.

    Ryan Mason.

    Only £4.9m.

    Overlooked by everyone.

After forking out £13m, he's Hull's main man now.

Worth a punt to free up funds?

Not "overlooked" by everyone unless you are proposing him as a 4TH, playing midfielder. If so, I would take a wait and see approach.

As a 5TH (non-playing) midfielder, I think he is 0.4m more expensive than you'd want to pay, as there are many of 4.5m mids that can return 2 points off your bench...

He did have some nice flashes at Spurs a few seasons back but isn't a real goal threat, is more of a box to box mid like a Noble without the penalties, set pieces, and not in as good of a team.

Good point, but I think he's got a bit more about him than the functional Noble.

Imo not. He's just pretty mediocre player, and just that he's Hull's main man, they have Dio-bloody-mande on wing/attack, and Livermore as a CB, makes them look like a Championship team wannabe.

And yet Hull have 2 points more than Arsenal and Liverpool as we speak.

Every week as a 4th midfielder. Mason with a £4.5m 5th midfielder could get you an extra heavyhitter in midfielder.

He did play as an attacking midfielder a few times for Spurs. Could be interesting if he plays in an advanced position for Hull.

How much time do price rises happen in? Got Costa on a WC (want to switch to Lukaku tomorrow). Was hoping for a Costa price rise and no Lukaku rise today. That possible?

This game is always best when the diffs are out.

After last weeks crushing disappointment that my two rivals teams are almost identical to mine after a flurry of WC's my son has just announced he's getting Ozil and Costa...

I got Sanchez and Lukaku !!....happy days.

    1. Mavric Marco
      • 13 Years

      Nice, good luck!

I think Sanchez will outscore Oz but Costa will outscore Luk so should be close!

I've no idea which one wins...a six and two threes as Lawro would say.

I'm just glad that he's doing different to me...

We all had Rondon as well so I've shifted him for Benteke...I was 10 pts ahead so a (-8) Is neither here nor there...

On a WC, currently on this:

    Foster/Pickford (Heaton/Robinson if Foster rise)
Shaw / Williams / PvA / Souare (Evans if Heaton GK) / Amat
    Sanchez / Hazard / Antonio / Pereyra*** / Hojbjerg
    Ibra / Lukaku / Hernandez

    ***2.5m ITB***

    Can't separate the GK options.

Happy with forwards and defence except PvA maybe.

Pereyra has been in my team for 2 weeks and a punt I really like, yet right now it feels like he's holding back the team. Should I really just be boring and bang Sterling in for him? Even though I think a) Firmino is a better option tomorrow and in the long run, b) it would mess up my options when getting Aguero back in. Can't have ZERO City assets for GW5 though, can I..?

The alternative is of course spending the 2.5m elsewhere. Defence of 5.5 / 5 / 5 / 4.5 /4 feels good, and the more expensive third striker options of Defoe/Benteke, etc don't inspire me massively.

    Stuck 🙁

    RMT please

    Heaton
    Shaw - Evans - Collins
    Puncheon - Hazard - Sanchez (C) - Snodgrass
    Ibra - Lukaku - Negredo

    Pickford - Sterling - Williams - Amat

    1) On a WC currently - would you sell Snodgrass for Capoue and use 0.9 to upgrade Collins to PVA/Morgan and Negredo to Defoe?
    2) Would you play Sterling tomorrow?

If defoe scores Williams doesn't get clean sheet. If Williams get cs defoe can't score. Is my thinking wrong here?

If benching Francis reckon there's better 4.5 picks? On wildcard

Forget that thinking. Predict the score in your own head then pock the team accordingly. Thats why its good to have attacking defenders. Gives you better point chances if they concede. Od play both.

    15th time lucky :
I recently replied to an RMT as follows:
Was i fair? Anyone else want to say the same? I mean they must have known their RMT was cobbled together from a series of electri-shock call & response.?
Basically I'm asking did I overstep the expected tone on here?

    Here's the response :
"It's like you Googled "template"! Are there any players in there you deep down champion! and as a guilty pleasure have in your team.
Basically, I could have asked somebody who knows nothing about football to read this site and they would pick that team."

Shouldn't be but it's bound to be and it is. Those secure in their own mind and selection don't post RMTs.

RMTs are my least favorite posts on here because they all kinda revert to the mean

It's nice to get a second opinion sometimes but when you're posting, as someone did earlier' "Free sex! That got your attention, now rate my team..." it's gone too far.

There are some sites where you have to contribute something before reading more articles, perhaps a thought for this one.

              Ha. Missed that one.

              It usually goes:

Name 12 or 13 template players and a couple of non-template picks. Get advice to change these back to the template OR
Name template team and collect accolades

RMTs discourage difference and too many of them make the comments pages more boring to read I think

Prior to week 3 it was all about Barkley, he's barely given a mention now. Amazing really.

What I'm getting at is, as soon as the majority moves towards one player in the price range, like Antonio, every RMT seems to have him. Last week it was Barkley, before Redmond.

Sticking with your pick for 3-4 weeks can often be the most satisfying approach. You don't need everyone to score >3 to have a good week.

          Maybe only a vaguely-related point 🙂

Exactly. There are a lot more followers than leaders. I don't think the best FPL players are posting a lot of RMTs because they are secure in their own analysis. Going template seems to just ensure mediocre performance along with a warm and fuzzy feeling that a lot of people are in the same boat

I'd say most people just want their team picked for them to be honest. Which I get to an extent, but this is a game and it's meant to be fun.. where's the fun in everyone else guiding you to a few points.

Now, Sturidge (c) tomorrow, who's with me? 🙂

      Fantastic reply...and agreed...

I once got shot down for saying FPL was quite easy if you visit this site and just play follow my leader...and you will...no problem.

I always play with a hit a week or a mad "theme team" like when I had every Belgian in the prem.

Could be gold....dunno, maybe not...I always like teams that have a theme.

Wild Rover wanted to do a North versus South match up in pre season but then had second thoughts...I love those sort of games.

And this year it's getting worse....Benteke Lukaku Bony front line with no Ibra or Aguero...

And yes I do know Aguero and Ibra are the best picks in the game...but so do 3 million others.

Don't post my team often but spent 2 weeks working on this. What do you think?

    Foster
    Baines, Williams, koscielny, McCauley
    Haz, Sanchez, Antonio, sterling
    Ibra, Costa

    Pickford, Capoue, Amat, Wilson (hull)

Money itb to Antonio and Costa to de roon and Aguero.

Nice. I assume you will do what im thinking and play capoue as 4th mid. Watfords fixtures pick up when Kun is back.

Steve - really like it - only one that sticks out to me is Sterling who im not personally sold on. I get the comfort he gives as so many people have transferred him but vs ManU away...no Kun. Im not sure dude.

Hi, presume you mean Wilson (Bou)?

I really like this team. Well balanced and Wilson has decent fixtures to justify the formation switch after GW6.

If I had to offer advice:

      - You plan on transferring Antonio out in GW6 whilst WH fixtures are still good.
      - Double everton defence may be a 2pt car crash. Consider Masouku (WHU) or Van Anholt at 5.0
      - Alternatively two 5.5 defenders for Williams and Kosc,,,Valencia and Dann
      - If you downgrade Capoue to any 4.5 and Costa to Lukaku, you can free up cash for Wilson to a striker in the 7.0 range (loads of options)
      - Double WBA defence when fixtures aren't amazing. Consider Foster to Heaton if you need the 0.1 or McCauley to any 4.5 or Collins

      Good luck
      -

As a 2-3 week punt - who are people going with? Lukakus or Costa?

Costa - not a baps magnet even when he scores. Loves a yellow. However, playing in an on form Chelsea side.

Lukaku - not scored for a while for Everton, but has some great fixtures!

I just like Costa as a player which is why I picked him.

He should've played for Man Utd in the mid-90s, would've fitted in really nicely alongside Cantona, Keane or Hughes.

Make easy selection and both bargains with those fixtures

Agreed on double def a bad idea usually but this time I'm gambling

Coleman 2% owned 5.4 mil get in !!

I don't think Valencia keeps a clean sheet this week so Coleman edges it

Baines hopefully still on pens so keeper for sure

I'm loving an Everton def and have doubled up myself. I'm hoping for 4 cs in the next 4 games. I appreciate that's unrealistic but I think deffo 2 and possibly 3 is realistic. Their fans forums suggest they are optimistic of this too with gueye playing in mf

It .looks like youd need to change 3 players to get Kun & keep Ibra - assume this is either dont intend or dont care.

With WC use Id go more long term in def.
Amat & Collins are not really nailed, leaving 2x eve as the core
Its a very heavy bet on Eve & Collins, when noted cs teams are utd, ars, wba in a couple of weeks wat come good too

1m+ or 10k at least it wont be boring template

Hi everyone. Could do with some advice:

    a) Sanchez + Antonio + OZIL
    b) Sanchez + Antonio + PAYET
    c) Sanchez + OTHER + Ozil/Payet

    Considerations:
    - Ozil/Payet to make way in GW6
    - Double Arsenal/West Ham in GW4 and GW5

    Much appreciated. Thanks,
