With the second international break of the season finally behind us, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, offering insight on the armband conundrum for the upcoming round of fixtures.

We’ll take a look at the main contenders in this week’s Captain Poll, analyse the Opta numbers and check up on the Rate My Team ratings before checking out a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez holds a comfortable lead at the top of our Gameweek 8 Captain Poll as Arsenal prepare to entertain struggling Swansea.

Having navigated the internationals without incident, the Chilean gets the nod by over 34% of voters as he looks for a fourth double-figure haul in six.

The Swans have picked up one point in the previous six and new manager Bob Bradley faces a tough task of keeping the Gunners at bay.

Sergio Aguero has been selected by just 23% for Man City’s home clash with Everton.

Despite blanking away to Spurs, an average of 7.8 points per match is superior to any forward as he faces a defence without a clean sheet in three.

Diego Costa is backed to do the business by 13% as Chelsea welcome Leicester City to the Bridge.

The consistent Spain international has produced points in six of his seven league outings and is up against a Foxes defence that’s shipped 10 goals in three road trips.

Theo Walcott and Heung-Min Son complete the top five.

Walcott sits just seven points behind team-mate Sanchez ahead of Swansea’s visit and has already netted at home to Liverpool and Chelsea.

The in-demand Son has earned more new owners than any player in the Gameweek as Spurs make their way to the Hawthorns.

The South Korean has produced two goals and three bonus points in his last two away outings and faces a defence that’s conceded in each of the last four.

Nonetheless, Maurico Pochettino’s comments on rest and rotation ahead of seven matches in 23 days may deter some from captaining the in-form wideman.

Christian Benteke and Dimitri Payet are overlooked options as Palace and West Ham’s dodgy defences square up ay Selhurst Park.

The Eagles frontman has netted in three of the last four and bagged a hat-trick for Belgium in midweek, albeit against Gibraltar.

Payet was also amongst the goals for France in the last week or so, maintaining the form that’s racked up 30 points in four starts since returning from injury.

Star of the recent international break, Dusan Tadic produced two goals and four assists for Serbia – he’s another differential in the making at home to Burnley.

Similarly, only around 1% favour the likes of Liverpool trio Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane and United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic as they go head-to-head at Anfield on Monday.

Think the RMT tool is a bit misleading this week. I'd expect Arsenal to score more goals against Swansea than Man City to score against Everton. I think Everton are more likely to score against City than Swansea are against Arsenal, hence the BP likelihood is better even for Arsenal.

Looking good, I'm trying to pick holes in it!

I think I’ll be moving Antonio on in the next couple of weeks, the fixtures go a bit pear-shaped for the Hammers. Hold for now though.

I’m not a big fan of doubling up in attack so if it was me I would take out Sterling for a Spurs mid, maybe Alli or Eriksen. I’m a Spurs fan though so maybe take that with a pinch of salt as Sterling will surely score a lot of points.

Tricky situation - I'm really happy with my team and can't really spot any transfer(s) that would certainly or at least most likely improve my current squad. I have 2 FT and 0.1 ITB and the squad is:

    Cech
    Smith Walker van Aanholt
    Firmino Cazorla Antonio Son
    Kun Lukaku Bony

    Bench: Jakupovic Holebas Capoue Williams

Would you make any transfers here or just save another FT?

Yes I was aware of that, but Valencia has better fixtures in next 6. Was hoping Man U could step up their game so I wouldn't have to make another def transfer. Thanks for the input, appreciate it. Cheers.

Makes perfect sense. If you intend to keep one of them over a period, Valencia might very well be better in the long run. I have both and intend to sell Valencia next gameweek and Baines after that. But you probably shouldn’t follow me. Good luck anyways! Getting an Arsenal defender in will surely pay off!

Thanks mate, Bolasie and Valencia out for Snoddy and Kos with 2 FTs, only remaining dilemma is who to start Foster or Pickford...save points vs potential CS. Probably best to go with Foster and hope they don't get destroyed. 🙂

Great! I’m thinking of doing Puncheon and Valencia to Snodgrass and Clyne (!) next week with two free transfers, unless there are injuries, of course. I reckon Valencia and Clyne will get somewhat similar scores this gameweek, so no need to hurry, and I hope Puncheon picks up a few points against West Ham before it’s bye-bye,

I could get Mustafi by downgrading Foster to Pickford (also have Heaton), so that’s an alternative, but probably waiting with that one to gameweek 10 (then for a minus 4).

    Need some help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got 2 subs available this week. Want to change 2 of these 4 players:

    Ramirez
    Fletcher
    Collins
    Friend

Who would you change and for whom? No money in the bank!

    1. Mick J
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

Fletcher is a decent fifth mid if you haven‘t had Capoue from the beginning. Collins and Ramirez out would probably leave you with £9.9. You could then get Snodgrass and Amat in. Amat won’t get you many points, but the alternative seems to be bringing in someone like A. Smith, and then you’d only have £5.3 for your midfelder. If Allen is fit, he would be a good option. Fer is a possibility, and Swansea’s fixtures are not so bad from gameweek 9 (an argument that favours Amat as well, naturally).

You could also downgrade Ramirez (if you don’t have Capoue), upgrade Collins to someone like Bellerin and play 433, provided you have three good defenders next to Bellerin (as well as three good forwards, of course).

      1. Mick J
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

Bellerin is too expensive even if you downgrade Ramirez, by the way, but there are good alternatives in the £5.5 category.

Is there anybody out there still with their original cheap rotating defence, be it two way or more?

Id be surprised if there is. Id be even more surprised if there is and its performing in anyway.

Yet im sure next season everyone will jump on the cheap rotations parings etc yet again.

Lukaku out for Deeney this week a good move? Or worth giving Lukaku/Ibra another week or two before getting rid of one?

Don't think coleman could get attacking returns? He's always involved going forwards & city not really slid at the back!
