Arsenal’s central figure catches fire at the Emirates. Swansea City dig out three points in time to ride their wave of fixtures and, for once, a cruel twist from the Fantasy gods may just have invigorated our season. We close the door on Gameweek 13 with our usual three-point summary.

The Player

The 140,000 FPL managers that sacrificed Alexis Sanchez, most likely in order to rush to Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, surely knew that, before long, they would suffer a blow.

Ironically, Sanchez timed his first double-figure haul at the Emirates to coincide with Hazard’s second successive blank, just to compound the agony.

In my view, Sanchez and Hazard will forever compete at the summit of the FPL midfielder standings and, in all likelihood, emerge as the top two scoring players in the game.

This weekend, Sanchez’s 23.6% ownership will have been delighted with his brace against Bournemouth. The rest of us were left licking wounds and wondering whether Hazard or even Theo Walcott could soon repair the damage.

Despite his huge scoring potential, Sanchez, like Kevin De Bruyne, still seems unlikely to command the kind of ownership befitting his talent and scoring potential.

A price tag of 11.3 remains a major obstacle, particularly given that the aforementioned Hazard and Walcott can be acquired far more cheaply.

For all the encouraging noise surrounding Sanchez in his new central attacking role for Arsenal, he still remains one point behind Hazard.

Surprisingly, his underlying statistics also trail last season’s averages – he’s seeing fewer touches in and around the box and firing fewer shots.

Furthermore, Walcott remains a factor.

Still averaging more efforts in the box per appearance and just trailing Sanchez across other key indicators, the 3.4 gap in price is a chasm.

Like Aguero and his hefty price tag, it seems we will always be questioning Sanchez as an asset while Walcott appears to remain a first choice option for Arsene Wenger.

For now, though, no analysis is required: Gameweek 13 belonged to the Chilean as a reminder of his explosive talents.

The Team

Bob Bradley’s first victory as Swansea City manager will surely provide a timely boost, just as the Welsh club embark on a run of fixtures that could and should see them scramble to mid-table safety.

Already on alert to their appeal over the festive spell, the sight of Leroy Fer and Fernando Llorente snapping into form offered an unexpected and welcome bonus.

They provided food for thought but, in all likelihood, remain a supporting cast to the talents of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Inevitably, he was a pivotal figure in Saturday’s dramatic 5-4 victory.

Another sweetly struck free-kick, another assist: Sigurdsson’s is arguably the single most influential player in the Premier League, relative to his team-mates.

With nine goals in his last 17 Premier League appearances last season and, having scored or assisted 50% of Swansea’s goals this, it seems guaranteed that, if Bradley’s side are to kick-on from Gameweek 15, then Sigurdsson will surely harvest big profit.

The consistency is already there to be admired: returns in six of the last eight Gameweeks have elevated him earlier than expected.

Philippe Coutinho’s injury surely ensured that almost half the FPL manager base have the means to acquire his services. But, with his ownership still simmering at 5.9%, many appear to remain sceptical, perhaps perturbed by the Gameweek 14 trip to White Hart Lane.

There really is little excuse to ignore Sigurdsson and Swansea following that, with Fer and perhaps even Llorente providing additional temptations.

Meanwhile, at the back, Jordi Amat seems revived as a 4.1 option in defence – a timely renaissance ahead of the demanding Christmas period, when our benches will doubtless come into play.

The Talking Point

So often our seasons are sprinkled with cruel injuries that send Fantasy managers careering into the buffers, forcing us to plan and conduct major surgery to rescue a disaster.

In the case of Philippe Coutinho’s setback, the scenario was very different.

A hugely disappointing blow for the player, the club and their supporters, many Fantasy managers will look upon Coutinho’s absence as a potential turning point.

The highest owned player in the Fantasy Premier League game, it will now force a reshuffle of the midfield template.

In addition, with some worthy replacements, Sigurdsson included, available cheaper than the Liverpool man, it will now liberate funds for investment elsewhere in our squads.

Most notably, it will see many consider swooping for Harry Kane ahead of his kind fixtures.

The knock-ons from all this could be considerable.

Suddenly the likes of Sigurdsson, Mane and Walcott are being boosted in ownership in almost equal measure.

Equally, Kane will find suitors and doubtless be handed the armband over three of the next four Gameweeks.

Combined, those shifts have the potential to revive fortunes and breathe new life into mini-leagues.

Coutinho was a decision made – potentially a season-keeper, the Brazilian’s slot in our squad seemed locked in. But his absence has handed some much-needed freedom to our options, just as the fixtures tumble thick and fast.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I am considering captaining Aguero this week. They have to win the game, Chelsea will score, so City will be pushing for at least 2 goals. I think Pep has been preparing for this game, KDB is rested, and I can see a Pep masterclass like we saw against Barcelona. Plus, it's Aguero, 2 pens and a tap in hasn't convinced me that Kane is a better option, and I'm feeling brave.

    Thoughts?

Aguero is always a good option but is he the best?
      No
Kane is the better option this week

Regardless of what Pep has in store, he is still facing the best defense in the league right now

I like it at a differential move, but currently leaning towards Sanchez.

You already know that most here will probably captain Kane because of his fixture first and foremost, so if you have a strong feeling about Kun, follow your gut!

Great article re Sanchez Mark, it reminded me of the kid at School who kept getting dead arms from the bigger lads who keeps telling everyone that it didn't hurt.

I especially like the part where you talk about his stats being down and labelling Theo a factor while ignoring that his have fallen off a cliff.

    Nice and objective 🙂

I am not convinced he will keep that up. Look at how he has been playing + stats lately. And personally I think he is a rotation risk, but that isn't based on anything other than my own theory.

              You don't own him either?

Who is saying he needs to keep it up.

              Peaks and troughs.

There are times when certain players are options and times when the aren't.

Siggy wasn't much of an option until a few reasonable scores and some nice fixtures and an injury to the most highly owned midfielder in the game made him an option.

Until Walcott stops being an option he's the best value midfielder in the game.

As for his stats falling off a cliff by what I'm looking at he's producing the right stuff.

1 goal in 4 games isn't fantastic though.

I am not joining in F society's critique of Mark, but I am joining in on the validity of Theo as an option compared to other mids.

He hasn't been looking dangerous lately. He only had the one shot this week when he scored on it. If it had been anyone, who hadn't produced as well as Walcott this season, people would be screaming that in wasn't going to continue. I know he has probably been affected by Arsenal slightly poor form lately, but I would still want someone who can get something even from tough games/when their teams performs poorly.

Look at his stats. Not impressive at all. And I don't like think argument that he has been the best value pick in the game so far is enough to see him as a good pick. And all this without mentioning that I personally think he won't be nailed.

Regarding Siggy he has been on the radar for a while. Swansea have been playing poorly, but he has been getting returns nonetheless. Good form, uptick in team performances and great fixtures - so of course he is a logical option for many....

Just my two cents. People are allowed to do whatever they want.

We will see a different kind of article next week if Hazard blanks this week and Sanchez scores, which is quite likely since it's an away fixture for Hazard and it's a big opponent. That will be the final nail in the coffin for people who sold Sanchez for Hazard after his 19-point haul.

At that point though Hazard has some nice enough fixtures, albeit 2 away from home but surely he can score against Palace!

I'm trying to find a way to fit both of them in, it's difficult even without Aguero and poor TV

Agreed. I have Costa though and I am not convinced Hazard is better than Costa, FPL wise. He may be more explosive but Costa is so consistent and I got him for 9.6. I have kind of already decided to go with Costa and Alonso from GW15 and if necessary, Pedro/Moses and leave Hazard out.

Yeah, there's opinion in there. The bit "In my view" perhaps gave it away.

I don't apologise for this. We get criticised for not giving opinion. We get criticised for not being objective.

As the writer, my views will leak into what I produce - if our copy was always cold and robotic, then we'd be rightly panned for that too. Pieces like the Digest have always been somewhat opinion led - certainly the Talking Point often is.

I love Sanchez but yes, I have Walcott. But, given I actually say that I think that Sanchez will be vying for top scoring player in the article, I don't think I'm misleading or distorting the content to my own opinion.

It's not a piece about Theo, so I didn't delve into his stats. But we actually discussed him and his decline in the ScoutCast last night so, across our coverage, we do balance things out. That was actually in response to your question, too.

When discussing the merits of having Sanchez, it goes well beyond Walcott and Hazard. It's Walcott/Hazard plus what you do with the 3.4 or 1.0 left over. We didn't do that here because it wasn't about that, it was drawing attention to Sanchez as our player of the Gameweek and trying to communicate the dilemma around owning/not owning him.

To do that, a certain amount of opinion seems inevitable and I'm not going to run this site guarding against that for fear of upsetting Sanchez zealots or fans/owners of any particular player. It all helps create discussion like this and that's a good thing.

Yes, I'm half way through it on you tube and have seen that part, like Jonty said, it's not a criticism just an observation of how things are playing out in the game and on here.

Anyway, off course you're entitled to your opinion, mine is that it's a slightly biased article written by a Theo owner and someone who don't own Sanchez, nothing wrong with that just can't complain when people point it out or are amused but the blatant nature of it, it feels like you're trying to convince yourself but using Theo as a counter point don't quite add up if you're basing any Sanchez negativity on declining stats.

I mean no harm anyway, just engaging.

Chelsea is vulnerable on the flanks, especially on the left side where Alonso plays. Walker showed that last game. Think Sané could play there because he is excellent one vs one and good distribution too.

Pep has the pace and talent to exploit 3-4-3's shortcomings. Pep will know that and Conte will know that.

      I have a similar issue.

I have Allen (BUR), Snoddy (mid) and Siggy (tot).

Have been changing my mind back and forth, but currently I am leaning towards benching Snoddy. Mid have a decent defense and not Hull's attacking ability isn't particularly trustworthy. Although he did score in OT + a penalty in the shoot out yesterday, so perhaps some confidence. Mbokani and Hernandes out, so Diomande likely to play?

Siggy is very good against top teams: goals against Ever, Ars, Chel + assists against the two Manchester sides. Not to mention that he could be wanting to prove himself against his former club.

My GK are Foster and Grant who've got a nasty run of games coming up after GW14 (plus Grant will probably lose out to Butland soon). I've a nice £1.4m itb to help

The rest of my defence are Lovren, Alonso, Holebas, Amat, Mee so I want to avoid duplicating there - except possibly for Burnley where I don't want Mee any more

    Please pick 2 from :-
    a> De Gea
    b> Cech
    c> Heaton
    d> Randolph
    e> Forster

Considering the upcoming festive schedule, which 5th mid would you prefer to have for backup on WC?

    (A) Phillips (WAT,che,SWA,MUN,ars,sot,HUL,tot)
    (B) Fer (tot, SUN, wba, mid, WHM, BOU, cpl, ARS)

    1. RubeRx

      Phillips
      + Nailed
+ Corners and some set pieces
+ Better player in my opinion
      - Tougher Schedule

      Fer
+ Exceeded goal expectations this season
      + Better Schedule
+ May get a price rise if he does end up doing something over the break
+ 0.2 cheaper in my case
      - Minutes are a concern

    2. Reedy

      Tough call.

I am still not 100% convinced Phillips will keep up his attacking involvement after Chadli returns - although people have been making some pretty solid arguments as to why he is..
On the other hand, I am equally unsure if Fer will keep up his form.

If you are planning to play him every week, I think I would be leaning towards Fer, as he has excellent fixtures over the busy period, where Phillips' fixtures are a bit mixed...

It would be my 8th attacker, so 1st sub in most cases

Certainly have more doubts over Fer than Phillips but he does have a better schedule and is cheaper

I just know one of them will come in handy over break with inevitable rotation but most importantly, i need someone to cover Costa when he does pick up his 5th YC

          • 13 Years

True. That is sort of my point, also in your case. For doesn't have any really bad fixtures from now and until the 3rd of Jan. Phillips could end up playing for you against Chelsea, arsenal, United or Soton.

I would go with Fer actually I believe. Or perhaps even Can to save even more cash.

This is my thinking. And as a 8th attacker you won't be relying on him that often and he seems fairly nailed now with Coutinho out? Saves you a little extra cash too.

        All valid points WR

Some players tend to bloom later in the season
May have taken a few months to gel with new teammates and get used to the way Pulis plays
        Just speculation of course

Neither inspire much confidence tbh but just want to have someone for the inevitable Costa YC

Need to make one of the following downgrades to get Costa/Kane...

Which of these is the best move?

    A. Hazard to Eriksen
    B. Sanchez to Walcott
    C. Firmino to Snodgrass

    Thanks.

Im getting Alonso next week. Lose Kos or Walker? Both have been bad but probably Kos have to go?

Kos. Arsenal look a bit of a mess until Bellerin returns. Spurs superior fixtures.

It having Walker on the bench a typo? Can't see any other reason for it.

With those fixtures you have to keep Walker

    Hi guys,

I'll keep it simple. Pick 2 of these 3 below for GW 14

    Sigurdsson / Snodgrass / Lukaku

It may sound crazy but I'm keeping the faith in Lukaku vs Man Utd

    Thanks

    Would you have:

    A)Wally/Siggy/Zaha/Firm/Hazard
    Austin/Kun/Kane

    B)Siggy/Firm/Sanchez/Pedro/Fletcher
    Austin/Kun/Costa

    Cheers !

      A. Removing the players that duplicate in both options would make things easier.

Not always. In this case I like seeing the rest of the attackers.

Perhaps a compromise of a the options without the duplicates and the team beneath 🙂 ?
