Two of the lowest scoring teams clash at the Riverside Stadium to create a predictable outcome, as a single set-piece delivery and far post header decide matters. Here’s the Stock Check from Gameweek 14’s final encounter.

On the Rise

Gaston Ramirez
Always the most likely member of Middlesbrough’s midfield to emerge as a potential Fantasy asset, the Uruguayan was their star performer on the night and proved a worthy matchwinner.

Ramirez has now provided two goals and an assist in his last four starts, although ‘Boro’s continued lack of cutting edge remains a major obstacle.

Aitor Karanka’s men have scored just 13 goals in their 14 Premier League matches and will likely continue to rely on defensive stability to earn them points.

While that’s the case, Ramirez seems destined to provide a short-term differential and little more. To compound matters, he appeared to suffer a knock to his foot which saw him withdrawn in the dying stages.

The Middlesbrough Defence
Far more likely to provide with an asset for the remainder of the season, Karanka’s back five earned a fourth clean sheet of the season this evening, albeit against a largely unambitious and impotent Hull City attack.

With George Friend sidelined, skipper Ben Gibson has proved the most popular target in the ‘Boro backline and he justified that tonight by claiming two bonus points taking him to 53 overall. Surprisingly, that’s just 8 points shy of Kyle Walker, the top-ranked Fantasy Premier League defender.

With Southampton and Liverpool up next, we can perhaps wait to invest in Karanka’s rearguard. However, from Gameweek 17, the fixtures fall nicely.

Should Friend, now priced at just 4.4, be fit and available at that point, he could prove to be a key acquisition.

In Decline

Robert Snodgrass
A third consecutive Gameweek without returns has seen the Scot fade as a fourth midfield option.

So integral to Hull City’s attacking potential via his dead-ball delivery, Snodgrass has been unable to shine as others around him struggle.

With just a single goal in their last three and with Hull’s fixture list stiffening over the festive spell, Snodgrass is being swallowed up by alternative midfield options in and around his price point.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think id like to get eriksen or Ali in for Allen.

Sanch Haz Allen Sig De Roon

^^ Current lads... and they need an upgrade I think. Costa Austin Kane strikers.

Alternatively Ibra in for Austin and drop Kosc for a 5.2 or less.

    Thoughts?

Always prefer a dead baller over a performance which leads me to eriksen but didn't see spurs game.

I'd go for one of the Spurs boys. United don't look like scoring more than one goal in a game at the moment

Yea true. I stuck with Ibra for a long time previously too. But if u Utes score, he's prob involved

Ibra or Spurs mid top of my wish list too. I think if your taking a hit either way I'd get Ibra, if the Spurs mids for free I'd get him. Spurs mids only temporary for 3 weeks, Ibra has a long run of good fixtures coming.

All for free yes. Any preference over which one?

        1. Jay_

Ibra for me, see a comment on my post below, basically, underlying stats, form, fixtures. And a longer run of good fixtures as opposed to Spurs 2 good homes and then being lumbered with Kane and an expensive(ish) mid.

Would have to drop Kosc for Cedric/Lovren to fund it and -4 :/

Any preference for a defender 5.2 or less?

            1. Jay_

Only thing about losing Kosc, is in 3 weeks you'll want/need him back. Got to be Cedric at that range I'd say.

    Morning all

    Walcott > KDB for -4
    no Sanchez

    Ridiculous?

Really fancy City to take Leicester to the cleaners, and then two home games in WAT and ARS.

Trying to break the template a little bit and cover no Sanchez the next three

    --------------------Pickford------------------
    ----------Alonso Cedric Holebas--------
    Sanchez Hazard Firmino Sigurdsson
    ------------Kane Costa Anichibe----------
    -----------------------------------------------------
Foster DeRoon Amat Pieters. 0 FT, 3.0 ITB

    A) Good to go.
    B) DeRoon > Son -4
    C) Firmino & Anichibe > Can & Ibrahimovic -8
    D) Something else?

Ideally, I want to do A) this week and have the choice of either B or C for free or -4 next week.
Only have .1 spare for B) and C) though so may have to pull the trigger this week. What do you think? Just hold and hope they don't rise out of range? Or pull the trigger 1 week early?

V good team for this week, would hold. In particular wouldn't take a hit to lose Firm at home to Wham.

      Son nailed do you think?

      1. Jay_

Not sure if totally nailed but willing to gamble if I go that route, would have Anichibe as cover and it would be a FT if I do it next week.

I'd keep Firmino. Aren't you a West Ham fan? You don't want to be double-annoyed when he scores a brace against you

      1. Jay_
        9 years, 7 months ago

Ideally I want to keep this week, but can only afford one of Ibra and Can to rise once this week if I can afford it next week. Got my heart set on Ibra and so worried about being priced out. Seems like the underlying stats are just bearing fruit, just around the time the fixtures are about to turn dreamy.

That's the fear, I suppose a Foster downgrade is always available for an extra -4 next week and just use Firm (WHM) and Anichibe (swa) for this week.

Very similar team to mine, I am playing Anichebe against that Swansea defense, he will bully team, wouldn't be surprised with him picking up an assist or two.

Son is nailed at the moment, especially with Lamela out.

      1. Jay_

Amazing stats for Anichibe at the moment too. Just worried about being priced out of Ibra by next week.

I watched extended highlights of the last Sunderland match, he played great.

Maybe you could downgrade Cedric to a 4.5 to afford Ibra?

          1. Jay_
            9 years, 7 months ago

Just got in Cedric last week, long run of decent CS chances for Saints all the way up to gw25. Think I'd rather lose Foster and just play Pickford every week. It's funny that the WBA GK was traditionally the go to man in FPL. Now he's by far the worst value out of the whole back 5 or 6 if you include Brunt

  6. Christmas Rotation Comes Early This Year

Have seen Christmas rotation being very much dismissed on FFS lately due to the article below. This should not be the case.

    https://mathematicallysafe.wordpress.com/2016/11/30/fixture-congestion-is-squad-rotation-during-the-christmas-period-a-myth/

The reason being 2016-17 is a different beast in terms of fixture congestion over Christmas.
In previous seasons fixture congestion has only occurred between GW17-20. This season we have GW15-16 set up as weekend-midweek fixtures and then on top of this we are straight on to the usual GW17-20 fixture congestion.

For those that like simple numbers, this season, GW15-20 will on average, be spread out over 23.05 days.
In 2015/16, GW15-20, on average, was spread out over 28.9 days.

Strong bench needed for sure, also when bringing in a player because of his good Christmas fixtures we need to strongly consider which games he might be rested for.

Kane is at risk for HUL or wat.
Ibra is at risk for cpl or MID.
Costa at risk for sun or STO.

I'd say Costa isn't a risk as there is no replacement for him. That's how I'd judge every player in my squad as if needed most are capable of playing all the games.

Costa definitely the least likely to be rotated out of the 3 for sure.

Even if Costa starts against Stoke, I imagine Conte would have a hair-trigger on subbing him, as a fifth YC in that game would see him miss Spurs the next. For the same reason, it makes more sense for Conte not to rest him for the games leading up to Stoke.

I think Kane is as safe as houses. He's missed 5 games of PL action already this season meaning he is fresher than most in the Spurs squad.

Slight prob at half time, if those quotes are right (never heard of sportreview). Couldn't have been that bad, considering what came next.

Thanks mate, just some lucky 50/50 captaincy calls thus far tbh. You're not doing too bad yourself, great season for you as well.

Have a feeling we'll both just be jumping back & forth between top 10k & 5k all season long until everyone catches up 😎

Worth a -8 to switch out Firmino and Bench Fodder for Costa and Fer? Already have Mane and Sigurdsson. Very nervous not to get Costa this week. He could rise two more times and I'll miss his points again.

Can looks better than Fer. Transferring Firmino out before West Ham could bite you

Big danger about a big hit for Costa is the 4 YC's. Would be a sickener if he got the 5th after a big hit.

    Dissecting a disaster

With two free transfers and Coutinho out, I considered my options: Erikson and Walcott. I went with Walcott over Erikson, which cost me 15 points. I had transferred out Sanchez for Hazard a few weeks ago, so I missed out on what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest point hauls of the season. I struggled with who to captain this week and finally settled on Aguero; the less said about that decision, the better. When I heard that Antonio would be out, I considered several players: Phillips, Can, and Ramirez. I went with Ramirez who, with 11 points, was as good as Can and two points better than Phillips. So, two of my decisions this week were awful, and one was just OK. I ended up with 46 points and wondered why that number sounded familiar. Oh right, it's Sanchez' score for all the people who captained him this week...

So Aguero is already gone and Kane is in. Walcott for Sanchez for -4? I hate chasing points, but it may be prudent given how many people in my ML have him.

I love this game, but it can make me nuts sometimes!

I did Firmino to Sanchez a minute before deadline last weekend. I was so afraid of not having him. Took a 12pnt hit and had 95pts. Don't he afraid to take a hit!

I would, we tend to play more freely away with the pressure off. Will easily pay off long run and the best bit is your only spending a little bit extra and not whacking all your funds into a heavy defence.

Disappointed, but understanding that this is a game of odds. And happy that they can look forward to a tottering Everton after that, an MCI with a dodgy defense now missing Fernandinho in front and Kun to worry us up front, and then WBA, Palace, Bournemouth, Swansea, Burnley, Watford. We'll live.

Id feel ok about it considering i got the .2 price rise! Would have been priced out otherwise & sanchez is not leaving my team now unless he gets injured/banned.

In that case I'd wait and give Phillips the Swansea game then downgrade him to a 4.3. You must be short on funds somewhere in your team if you're alternating between Phillips and Austin

    hey guys -
what is the better use of my other FT this week?
    Holebas for Alonso?
    Or Allen for Sig?

If I go with the Alonso route, I will play a cheap fifth midfielder or Anichebe every week. If I go with the Sig route, I will have a cheaper defence (Kosc, Holebas, Pieters, Lovren and Amat at the moment)

Good evening all... Looking for a little advise on a 4th Mid. My front three are Kane, Costa and Austin. My three main Mids are Sanchez, Hazard and Firmino - and my 5th/benched mid is Fletcher. My current 4th Mid is Allen and I can't decide whether I should hold him or look to replace. I have 0.8 in the Bank so without taking a hit I could upgrade Allen to someone in the 5.8 range. I'm thinking...

    1) Keep Allen
    2) Drop down in price and pick up Can
    3) Go up to Zaha

    Thoughts?
