Spurs are wasteful but still cruise to victory while Leicester are woeful and pay the price as the Champions League shuts up shop for the calendar year. Here’s how the last round of group matches played out.

Tottenham 3 CSKA Moscow 1

Mauricio Pochettino spent much of his pre-match time talking up the delights of the Europa League and promptly picked a strong Spurs side in case anyone doubted his sincerity.

He made just one change from the team that spanked Swansea City, Harry Winks (4.5) coming in for Mousa Dembele (5.4), and a generally one-sided affair ensued.

In-form trio Christian Eriksen (8.3), Harry Kane (11.1) and Dele Alli (8.1) were at the heart of the win.

The latter two claimed a goal apiece and both fired seven attempts, Kane scoring for the sixth time in five matches since returning from injury.

The influential Eriksen set up Alli’s first half equaliser and supplied eight scoring chances, while Danny Rose (5.9) also provided an assist as Spurs wound up winning with ease. They still managed to miss a host of opportunities to seal the deal before CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev contrived to save an Alli header only to then kick the ball into his own net.

The return of centre half Toby Alderweireld (6.3), a second half substitution, lightened the mood further.

The Belgian has remained in 9.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads despite missing six Gameweeks through injury. His recovery looks to be beautifully timed – Spurs will play three times in a week before Christmas, have ten days off and then play three more times in a week from December 28.

That ridiculously lop-sided schedule is bookended by fixtures away at Manchester United and home to Chelsea, and Alderweireld will surely play a major part in much of it.

A disappointing Champions League campaign now begets a 2017 Europa League tilt, with Spurs involved in both legs of the Round of 32 between Gameweeks 25 (away at Liverpool) and 26 (at home to Stoke) in mid to late February.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Son (Nkoudou 62), Wanyama (Alderweireld 68), Winks, Eriksen, Alli, Kane (Onomah 83).
Subs not used: Vorm, Sissoko, Dembele, Wimmer.

FC Porto 5 Leicester City 0

Leicester City finally got round to bringing their poor domestic form onto the European stage on a night when their fringe players failed to take a rare first-team opportunity.

With the group already won, Claudio Ranieri was more than justified in making ten changes to the team that lost to Sunderland, with skipper Wes Morgan (4.9) the only survivor.

But he would have hoped for a lot more than the abject display his squad players then produced.

The scoreline didn’t flatter Porto – the Foxes managed precisely zero shots on target all night.

Last season’s revelations Jamie Vardy (9.6) and Riyad Mahrez (9.0) didn’t even travel and Ranieri gave Nampalys Mendy (4.4) his first start since August in a midfield also containing Danny Drinkwater (5.3), who is currently serving a domestic ban.

To cap a desperate night, the England midfielder then limped off with a knee injury in the second half, although Ranieri played down the issue post-match.

“Drinkwater’s injury doesn’t look serious. He is suspended for Saturday anyway, but he should be okay.”

The normally cheery coach was sombre in his appraisal of the debacle, ostensibly blaming himself, although not completely.

“I have no regrets because I wanted to give an opportunity to all my players. If I needed to win or draw, I would bring all my first team to fight, but when you know there is another difficult match on Saturday against Man City and you are top of the group, why not give a chance to players who say ‘why I don’t play? We are losing in the Premier League, give me a chance’. For this reason, I give me a chance to them. That’s it. Then, the result is my fault but they missed a great chance.”

Once that Manchester City match is out of the way, the Foxes have a good run of fixtures – Everton and West Ham at home, Bournemouth, Stoke and Middlesbrough away – through to early January.

The transfer window will be open again by then and there is currently little in Leicester’s squad to warrant Fantasy investment.

Leiecester City XI: Hamer; Hernandez, Wasilewski, Morgan, Chilwell, Gray, Mendy, Drinkwater (Barnes 76), Schlupp Albrighton (45), Okazaki, Musa Ulloa (45).
Subs not used: Amartey, Simpson, Zieler, Fuchs.

Am I good to go here? Don't really fancy a hit this week, but yellow flags on Pedro and Mane.

Aim to just cling in the top 10k 😀

    Pickford (Foster)
Mustafi - Lovren - Chambers (Amat, Evans)
Pedro - Siggy - Sanchez - Mane (de Roon)
    Ibra - Austin - Kane

My defence is looking awkward for the next GWs to come.

Walker - Has played every PL game but last year he was rotated with Trippier whenever there was a fixture congestion. GW16 against HUL very much in danger.

Lovren - At least he is nailed. Decent when Matip plays. Mixed fixtures.

Holebas - Awful form. Mixed fixtures. Rotation risk because of full-back?

Evans - Difficult fixtures but nailed and works decently in my rotation.

Amat - Seems to be nailed and good fixtures coming up, but for the enemy...

Just listened to the Scoutcast, I found the price changes discussion particularly interesting as I'd actually made a post about this about a month ago.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/11/12/scout-notes-international-round-up-8/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_14444934

Totally agree with Jonty's comments on not liking how price changes are becoming the game. The day you do your FPL transfers shouldn't impact on how well you do.

Opinions when I first posted a "one change a week - max 0.2" model were that people liked the risk-reward of early transfers. Now the Scoutcast guys have had their say on transfers, do people agree with them?

The price changes bit is obviously great for FPL, they get more clicks and that's how it'll stay.

      1. CABAYE4
        • 14 Years

I think they lose casual players because they're doing worse and can't afford the same players.

They'd get more clicks if they hung around longer.

Quite frankly the casual players don't even know who 70%+ of the players in the premier league actually are... so they're always going to have a bunch of players they've never seen play, regardless of whether or not the price changes allow them to fit in 1-2 extra big hitters.

If there were less changes then whenever a template emerged, even more people would have it, as we could all afford it

      at least now, with
      Alonso etc..
      Sanch-Haz-Sig-Firm-de Roon
      Kane-Costa- Austin

8th attacker can vary slightly based on your TV/SV

Templates change all the time, they're normally a week behind the points.

For instance, there were a lot of people selling Alexis last week and plenty selling Firmino this week.

          • 11 Years

True, but a volatile market is still an extra differentialising factor, which I quite like

      • 16 Years

Interesting concept. What's peoples opinion of the old price-change model of a few seasons back, where twice as many transfers were needed for a second rise, 3 x for a third? We rarely ever had 3x risers then - and almost exclusively (if I remember correctly) during an international gameweek.

      1. CABAYE4
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Probably would improve things but the main issue of Sat/Sun risers would still be a big problem.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 16 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

A bigger factor, I'd say. Whether or not it is a problem depends on your viewpoint. Thise who like to risk a transfer before the gameweek has finished would like it. I guess that FPL Towers didn't, though - because they felt a need for change to what has proved to be a more volatile model.

          1. CABAYE4
            • 14 Years
            9 years, 3 months ago

Yep, I get that some people like the additional risk element of early transfers.

Personally I don't see why when you do your transfers should impact on who you can afford later in the season.

There's no right or wrong answer, clearly price changes are required, it's just about getting the best way of making them effective.

            1. Pasqualinho
              • 16 Years
              9 years, 3 months ago

I think it's as Parm says - FPL Towers don't want zero traffic Mon-Thu and everyone piling in for a few minutes on a Friday. Plus the template-encouragement that single-day transfers would promote. My opinion is there are far more pros to the volatility of the transfers than cons - It encourages players to be different, and even encourages the same player to try differing strategies throughout the season. As in all competition, when you're behind, you need to take risks - that's how it should be.

Knowing this game, if the transfer market were to be slowed, they might price player higher to begin with. Think about prior years when players like Mahrez, Kane, Vardy were a cheap as chips and had incredible seasons. Their value would remain low.

The only difference between prior years and this season imo is that the great "5.5 enabler" has emerged yet.

Ive been looking for that "enabler" all season. Production from my 4th mid has been atrocious. Gone through, Capoue, Antonio, Allen. Redmond. Only now, since the big guns like Haz, Alexis, Kane, Aguero & Costa have been firing at the same time has it paid off by carrying a cheap 5.5 dead wood enabler in my midfield. Imagine if the enabler was producing too.

I'm fine with how it is, we just have to adapt. The international break would have been a lot duller if we could all just have waited for the pressers. Wonder how many lost Alexis during his injury 'scare'.

I feel the opposite. I like a volatile market that reflects whatever volatility exists from the transfer activity of fantasy players. I've played other market based fantasy games with soft caps, and they had far greater price volatility. IMO, it presents fantasy players with competing strategies of making trades for money, to accumulate roster value for future big hitting players, or to trade for immediate fantasy point returns based on who one thinks will have a big week, regardless of whether that player is being actively bought or sold. So, to me, the more things that create roster differentiation and provide multiple means to the end of doing well, the better.

Funny thing is that if clubs with lower priced fantasy squads make it far in the FA/League cup, team value at the end of the season is moot (when you'd think it should count most). As most "sharp" FPL players will be using their WC in GW 34ish to stack their team with DGW players and will have loads of money in the bank.

I must say that i quite enjoj the price system...and i really like the fact that a lot of price changes happen on saturday and sunday after the matches. For me, it is a big part of the fun and strategy...would be really, really boring if everyone would just wait for the friday to make transfers. What would you do whole week if all price changes would happen on friday?? You could just sit back and wait for possible injurie news. But when week like this happens where Kun get 4 match ban, Costa have yellow flag and the prices are going up and down every night, you must admit it is much, much more fun.

Not sure you need to. You have a selection of cheap rotators. If you want another option, then I'd do Amat -> Barragan

      1. Hurricane Gilbert
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Just feel that my defenders are full of rotation risks (Walker/Holebas) or crappy options (Amat/Evans) going into the fixture congestion.

Alonso and Toby would be nice but no way I can afford both without a loads of hits.

You don't think Cedric is a rotation risk going into thr fixture congestion? A lot of the fixtures are away too. Not sure if I trust Soton away.

        1. RMA
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

Well he's your best bet imo. Soton aren't perfect but they have only shipped 15 goals in 14 games so definitely one of the most defensively sound teams. Then there's Cedric's assist potential which shouldn't be disregarded. I got him in last week and plan to keep for 10GWs because of pretty consistent fixtures. Not having to spend many transfers on defence is an advantage given how volatile the price changes have been when it comes to attackers.

In case of rotation (unlikely imo) you still have some backup in your cheapies (SWA has good fixtures, whatever that's worth).

@RMA I see your point about sticking with a good defender in a solid side. I may be overreacting about rotation fears. Holebas to Cedric next week means I don't have to play Amat away to WBA.

Do you have Alonso? Seems like a must. If he doesn't rise like crazy I will bring him in for Walker in GW 18.

I have Alonso&Cedric, no Walker&Sanchez though - otherwise pretty identical team. TOT are going to keep cs too so I it's a difficult choice! I'm lucky to have brought in Alonso before his EVE haul.

Nice call there! I have wanted Alonso for so long now. He is my top priority atm, but Walker out for a hit now doesn't seem right. And don't want to downgradd my attack to upgrade Lovren. By GW18 I will most def have Alonso though. Hoping he doesn't rise more than 0,2 by then.

How are you shaping up? Planning to get Sanchez back I suppose?

The last weeks have all been fine. Mostly green arrows. My first 5-6 weeks were crap though. I'm hovering around 150k now so still somewhat decent. You?

Yeah, I guess I'll be forced to get Sanchez in 3 GW from now. Can't justify taking -8 hit atm given the coming dip in Arsenal fixtures.

Yeah a slow start and then a comeback, that's my season so far. Sitting at 60k atm. I'm pretty hit prone as I always look to optimize my squad and build a high TV. But around Xmas i'm hoping to be more restrictive with hits.

Yeah the problem is how rapidly the market is changing. Sanchez could easily be near 12,0 by gw18...

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/20161208/team-news-bellerin-welbeck-per-santi

    on team news…
From Tuesday night we have no injuries, I hope. Everyone looks to have recovered well. Coming back into the squad, we have Coquelin who was of course suspended and maybe Bellerin who has a test today.

on Danny Welbeck and Per Mertesacker…
They are recovering well but they are a few weeks away from joining in again.

    on Santi Cazorla's surgery…
It’s a difficult way to say the surgery is ‘perfect’, but you can say it was needed and it went well. Afterwards we have to see how he recovers.

It still puts you in a better position than a lad with TV of 101. I see a lad in my own league, he has been running away on points since the start BUT now with a TV of 100.5... my own TV is 104.... what I see now is his squad riddled with injuries, and to be honest I can't see him holding up against TV's of 103 / 104 coming into second half of season... TV does matter, insofar as it allows a much stronger finish to the season

I see from the excellent FPL Discovery site (see spreadsheet at https://fpldiscovery.wordpress.com/2016/12/03/1617-gw14-team-selection-and-stats/), that top 10k were 102.4 and overall active teams were 100.5 at start of the gameweek. TV over 104 looks good, but you do lose 50%+ of profits as you chop and change, so maybe not such a huge advantage.

Liverpool may still be too soon for a start but I can clearly see why you would consider him.

Especially when others have Austin and the like in their side, he could be a great differential as a 3rd/Cheap Striker option as WH's fixtures become as good as any after LIV through to the new year.

As awful as WH are defensively I think Carroll is more than capable of contributing at the other end.

His goal in his 5 minute was encouraging.
