Arsenal’s old frailties are exposed by two Everton crossed balls, while Bournemouth’s blossoming backline enjoy another set of returns as Leicester City’s dire away form continues at the Vitality Stadium.

Here’s the Stock Check following Tuesday’s pair of matches…

On the Rise

Nathan Ake & Adam Smith
Retained at the heart of the Bournemouth defence at home to Leicester, Ake strengthened his hold on a starting berth, forcing Eddie Howe to re-structure and push Adam Smith into a midfield role.

With Junior Stanislas sidelined, Smith may continue in that advanced position to offer the optimum route into a blossoming Cherries backline.

However, Ake, at 0.5 cheaper, is arguably now the go-to option, even over both Charlie Daniels and Steve Cook, who sit at the very top of the FPL rankings for value among defenders.

A major threat at set-pieces with two goals to his name in just five starts, Ake is a 4.3 option that warrants starts once the fixtures brighten from Gameweek 21.

Seamus Coleman & Leighton Baines
Renowned for their attacking qualities, the pair of Toffees full-backs both fetched returns as Everton rallied to earn the points against Arsenal.

Combining for the equalising goal, Coleman’s header marked his third strike of the season, taking him level with West Brom’s Gareth McAuley. Meanwhile, Baines’ cross provided him with just a second assist of the campaign.

Neither have convinced as Fantasy assets over the season, with the Merseysiders’ defensive form so erratic after a promising start under Ronald Koeman.

While Coleman offers obvious appeal, at 5.5, his price tag remains a major obstacle with Everton’s current crop of fixtures.

Assigned spot-kicks, Baines could yet prove an attractive option but, again, we will need to see the schedule improve before his 5.3 valuation becomes more palatable.

An obliging run in mid-January may yet see the pair edge onto the radar, particularly if Koeman has made further progress with his defence by that point.

In Decline

Theo Walcott
Having been named in the starting line-up, it appeared that Walcott was poised to rise in stock given his apparent “security of start”. However, he was hooked around the 70-minute mark for the third time in four Gameweeks, as Wenger continues to use Olivier Giroud from the bench.

The winger was again ineffectual away from home but, once more, Arsenal themselves were unconvincing having surrendered control after dominating the opening 20 minutes.

Initially priced at 7.5, Walcott still represents value but seems reliant on his home form. He has now scored just once in seven away trips, while Alexis Sanchez has bagged nine of his 12 goals on the road.

However, with strong fixtures to come – including Emirates encounters with West Brom and Crystal Palace – Walcott remains firmly in our sights.

Gabriel
Another “value” option in the Gunners line-up suffered a dent as Arsene Wenger’s side surrendered the three points, exposed in the air from crosses for both goals.

At just 4.8, the Brazilian appears to offer an opportunity as a short-term investment, but the Arsenal defence has now returned just a single shut-out in nine.

Favourable fixtures to follow on from the Gameweek 17 trip to City promise an upturn in fortunes but, having seen Arsenal’s frailties exploited by Everton, the likes of West Brom and Palace will have gained plenty of encouragement for their forthcoming Emirates visits.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Heh. Did this Hazard thing really start from the tweet saying he wasn't spotted at the team hotel?

I twit-searched it and see many pages reporting it now but anything from Chelsea?

Dinnery and national newspaper journalists are saying he's not playing tonight.

I'd say it's highly likely he's not going to appear.

That's how it started. Have yet to see anything to suggest any media outlets know any more other than that. All of them have reverted to the "our sources" rubbish without any quotes, photographs or evidence of any kind.

See that's the point, they don't have any evidence whatsoever just that guy who tweeted but they're pretending they're "in the know" That's what irritates me most.

Chelsea won't, but you'd think that one of them might have some sort of a quote from their mythical "sources" which none of them do.

I see it happen all the time with football teams. Someone breaks something on Twitter, media outlets write up a big article based on that Tweet but never acknowledge that's where they're taking their information from. Instead they revert to "sources close to the club" which very often means nothing, but they're desperate to appear like they actually know something. That's where my issue lies. Many football journos are worthless.

As a non-owner, I'd just laugh if all the drama is for naught. But just made me realize that as well..

English teams never release the 18 man squads a few hours before kick off right?

It could well be accurate based on that lad's tweet. I just don't like them all going off reporting it without acknowledging that he's the sole source of their info, or at least one of the key sources.

Nope, squads aren't released until an hour or so before kickoff. We won't hear anything official from Chelsea on it until the squads are out.

Funny the things you take for granted. It only just hit me lol. I support Barca, teams in Spain release the 18 man squad around midday and then the official lineup (who starts/benched) the hour before kickoff

That's why I haven't got him yet. Though I was pretty close to doing Firmino > Hazard yesterday.

I've realized he can be so explosive but in certain games. Teams that give him space to counter into for one. He's been more quiet when Chelsea play tighter defences.

Yeah, he's no Sanchez. Even Costa looks more dangerous than him right now. Fortunately, I was one of the people who captained Sanchez for his 23-point haul, but never saw it coming, so I thought I'd better get Hazard in before he explodes the same way from GW15. He's definitely due though in the next 2 fixtures.

So I still have Firmino and 2FT's. Really want Toby in my defence, but I'm 0.3m short of
      Evans & Pieters > Ake & Toby

So I think one of Evans or Pieters > Ake this week, and hold the other FT and give Hazard/Firmino one more GW before deciding on a new Mid for Chrimbo rotation.

So assuming that's a decent plan:

American sports journalism tends to be so much more reliable.

As a student of journalism I find what are considered credible sources in the UK to be quite comical. Although Hazard is more than likely out, the articles sound like educated guesses.

Assist against your own team does not give 3 points, own goal is -2, CS for own team not possible with own goal. So all in all -1, still not bad for a Stones owner

i was told earlier it was too lateral but still considering it.
Want to collect cash to upgrade 4th/5th mid.
Plus Ake's points atm do seem to justify on another level.
Getting a 3rd/4th defender for 5th defender money.

Karius will be decent till next year as he still very young for a GK...GK need time..I remember everyone used to lambast de gea and only fergie believed in his potential even after mistakes and look where he is

liverpool are under pressure to win the league and they cant with a rookie behind the goal

hart has pl and title winning experience and if he's available and out of favor cant see why klopp wont go for him

I'd be shocked if they gave up on Karius that quickly.

Plus, Hart's wages would be big. Not to mention it'd be something like the 4th keeper they've signed in 2 seasons?

This. De Gea made his share of mistakes yes, but he also had good moments to give faith.

            Karius hasn't done that
Plus the people arguing that it is a good thing he had so much league experience, I don't get. I know PL is different, but he should have shown more experienced decision making given his history!

            Carra got those ages wrong.

De Gea at United was 20 when he first started (worth double checking, but I'm fairly sure he wasn't 19) and Karius is 23

Is it just me but are the big price rises this year causing knee jerks among good managers too?

For example with exact change to do Smith-->Alonso for -4 and fear of Alonso price rising on Sunday night to price me out, I knee jerked and already 10pts behind with that. Last week with Austin injury and his price falling on Friday I did Austin-->Iheanacho for -4 instead of playing Allen from bench who still could have chipped in with 5pts....Is going steady with rare hits and not chasing price rises the way to go this season too? It has surely helped me in last few seasons too

      1. danishdynamite
        • 15 Years

Every one keeps whining about bigger price changes this year, I certainly have not notied them, and I'm rather partal to a cash-chasing transfer (11 hits so far this season. And counting.)

Rises / falls are still capped at 0.3 a week, and there can't be more than a handful of instances of soneone rising or falling that much in a week
