Suspensions

‘Tis the season for much of the male population to start planning their last-minute trip to Boots to get some perfume on Christmas Eve.

Gameweek 16’s referees were clearly in the same distracted mode as they produced little disciplinary drama from two nights of midweek action.

Just the one man fell from the Suspension Tightrope, Oriol Romeu’s (4.5) booking versus Stoke meaning he misses a derby date with Bournemouth on Sunday.

In the same fixture, Marko Arnautovic (7.2) put in a 23-minute shift most notable for a studs-up liaison with Sofiane Boufal’s thigh, thus earning him a three-match suspension. He’ll now miss Stoke’s final knockings of 2016 – Leicester at home and trips to Liverpool and Chelsea.

Neither player is well owned, however – the former at 0.5% and the latter 0.8%.

They are joined on the sidelines by the 4% owned Phil Jagielka (4.9), who is set to miss the Merseyside derby after collecting two yellows in Everton’s win over Arsenal.

Of more concern for nearly all of us is the burgeoning Chelsea contingent on the rope.

With the festive schedule traditionally a time for frequent rounds of line-up chicken, having no fewer than four well-owned Chelsea assets one caution away from suspension adds even more uncertainty to a time stuffed full of it already. N’Golo Kante (4.7), Nemanja Matic (5.1), Diego Costa (10.9) and David Luiz (6.1) are the men in question.

We also believe that Pedro (7.2) is also on four yellows, though this has yet to be confirmed by the FA website – we’re seeking clarification from them before adding him to the Tightrope widget.

The Spaniard has been booked three times in the league – his last one was at Sunderland last night – but according to the BBC match reports, he was also cautioned in the Blues’ EFL Cup win over Bristol Rovers.

Chelsea’s festive fixtures involve Palace away and Bournemouth and Stoke at home before the New Year card amnesty. With Eden Hazard (10.5) carrying a knock that kept him out of Wednesday’s win at the Stadium of Light, further doubts over the league leaders’ midfield make-up for those juicy matches is the last thing we need.

A suitably bulging pre-Christmas tightrope also includes: Kyle Walker (6.1); Victor Wanyama (4.8); Jan Vertonghen (5.7); Harry Arter (5.0); Dan Gosling (4.7); Antonio Barragan (4.5); Adam Clayton (4.3); James McArthur (5.0); Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8); Robert Huth (4.9); Lynden Gooch (4.3); Ryan Shawcross (4.9); Billy Jones (4.4); Kyle Naughton (4.5); Dean Marney (4.5); Matthew Lowton (4.5); Steven Pienaar (4.9), Christian Fuchs (5.3); Jordi Amat (4.1); Miguel Britos (4.4) and Michail Antonio (6.7).

Back from one-match midweek suspensions are Antonio Valencia (5.4), Didier Ndong (4.8), Jason Puncheon (5.2), Danny Simpson (4.9), and Craig Dawson (4.8), while Dieumerci Mbokani (5.5) is finally available again after completing a three-stretch for using his head in an EFL Cup tie in entirely the wrong fashion.

The long-term lags now number just two – Man City pair Sergio Aguero (13.0), who has two more matches to miss for his Luiz lunge, and Fernandinho (5.4), who will sit out Gameweek 17 before ticking a Boxing Day trip to Hull from his sporting bucket list.

The Men In Black

It was a quiet Gameweek for the whistle-blowers, although Bobby Madley awarded his sixth spot-kick of the season to bump up his penalties per game average to 0.46.

And yet it could have been so much louder if Craig Pawson hadn’t taken the night off in the Palace v Man United match, missing the chance to blow for a penalty and send off Marcos Rojo (5.2) in an otherwise exemplary performance that involved just the two controversial offside decisions.

I know if I ship him he'll get a brace. So he's not going anywhere. The fact that others are dropping him means he's a good differential.

Might do. Wouldn't particularly bother me if he did though as selling was an easy decision. It's more painful when the narrow margin calls burn you.

Captaining him at home against B'mouth and Hull could be the punt to save your season. Supposing he's fit and your rivals still don't have him.

Not concerned about not owning any arsenal players? Can't have them all, but after city they have some decent fixtures...that's if you class city as a tough game for attacking assets.

I had other pressing issues and thought I would stick it out with KDB for a while with Kun out. Very scary not owning Sanchez!

Don't really rate the Nacho replacements, so should I get in Victor Enabler-chibe and go 3-5-2? I'd use the funds to upgrade Fletch to Lallana.

    Haz, Alexis, Eriksen, Siggy, Fletch
    Costa, Kane, Iheanacho

If they roll out 3 at the back more regularly I think Rose & Walker could be better options. I can see them bettering Alonso's attacking returns.

True, but CS are the main things for defenders don't forget. And it that regard Alonso beats them. Fair thinking though.

Agreed. I think it's one to watch though. Both teams have conceded same number of goals so far - Toby back too should help further. Rose & Walker have both been involved in 3 goals (same as Alonso), but a bit cheaper.

Just saying if they play further forward more often then stats might tip in their favour.

    FFS Feature Request

I'd like to suggest a feature on this site where people can advertise Mini-leagues. Finding players with whom you have something in common might not be a challenge in the UK where the sport is woven into the fabric of daily life, but elsewhere (I'm in the US) it's virtually impossible to know who in your town / state / time zone / country is also playing this game.

    Humbly submitted,

    Interloper

Just out of curiosity, why would you benefit from being in a ML with people from your same town/state/time zone/ country? 🙂

Fair question. My point was not that geography was the driving force for creating mini-leagues, although being in the same time zone would at least provide better opportunities for commiserating.

Here in the US there aren't the same sorts of affiliations as in the UK. Nobody at work talks EPL, matches are on another continent, kick off is in the morning (mostly) so no pubs in which to watch/discuss, etc. You could go watch your kid play soccer at the weekend and not a single parent there that would even know what EPL stands for.

    Evening!

    Cech Pick
    Alonso Lovren Pieters Holebas Chambers
    Alexis Firm Siggy Pedro Carrick
    Kane Costa Nacho
    2 FT

Think it's time to get rid of Firmino & Nacho.

    Who should come in?

    A) Ibra & De Roon => leaves me with great strikers but obvioulsy very lightweight in midfield

    B) Lallana & Defoe => then Defoe to Benteke in a few weeks time when the fixtures shift

    C) Eriksen & Origi => Did the Eriksen train already leave the station?

    D) Payet & Negredo => Decent fixtures for both

Most people players will miss a game over the xmas period. He got his out of the way early.

Great fixtures in the best team in the leagues and he has is on the cusp of replicating his top FPL scorer (2 time) form.

Hazard was also cheaper, which meant it was less Hazard v Sanchez and more Hazard + X vs Sanchez + Y, with X being a more expensive player. Hazard was also in better form, which a lot of people favour over fixtures anyway.

I really think this game is more about luck than anything.
I had two choices last wk.

    1) Austin to origi or Llorente.
    I went Llorente
    2) Firmino to Eriksen for -4.

Seen as I had taken hit 3 wks in a row (which didn't work out) I decided not to do firmino to Eriksen. C what happened.

My rival brought in brunt and Clyne and had rondon up top. Bingo.

So a lot is down to luck??

Now I'm in same boat as still gave firmino and Llorente

Luck does play a huge part but (as the cliché goes) it tends to even itself out over a season if you keep making the right decisions. If it didn't then you wouldn't get players as consistent as Ville Ronka.

Conspiracy theory: Anichebe doesn't really have a knock? Maybe Moyes just gets all his managerial tips from the local press

    http://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2016/12/13/13934898/make-your-case-should-we-rest-anichebe-for-the-chelsea-game

Tbh, I imagine Moyes knew they wouldn't win that game. Makes sense to rest him ahead of games they could potentially win.

I'll never understand why some of us take the view that if somebody sells a good pick like Hazard then he's gone for good for the seller.

Of course selling him this week is a reasonable gamble if somebody chooses to try it, he might not play....or he might. ....but either way it's a gamble that may or may not pay off.

Just because they take that gamble this week it doesn't mean they can't get him back again.

      • 10 Years

I'll never understand why anyone ever gets frustrated because another player has bought/sold a particular player (unless it's ML rival, of course)

    2. Licious Lizard
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

It could still be a waste of (at least) 2 FTs and missed points in the time it takes them to get him back in. Of course it is like that with every gamble, but can't see the harm in trying to "help" people keep him. That is what we are doing on here 🙂

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

It's mainly the thinking that a player is gone for good that I don't understand. Just buy him back.

There are only two players in the game so far this season for who transfers are problematic due to price....Sanchez and Costa....The cost of shifting them in and out is a problem.

        1. Licious Lizard

I agree with you to a certain extent. Loss of value tied up in a player could be a factor as well, as you mention.

For example the Aguero case. A lot of people have spread the Aguero funds out on 2-3-4 different players and got in Costa/Kane. It is going to take them a couple of transfers to get Aguero back in + disrupt their team balance/tactic and player quality by suddenly having to pick cheaper picks on a couple of spots.

As long as nobody has moved much in price then shuffling the deck isn't a problem. It's only a problem when waving goodbye means you can't get them back without significant damage elsewhere.

Aguero, Ibra, Hazard, Firmino, Eriksen etc have only ever moved a little all season.

Goodbye hasn't meant goodbye for those so far...just see you later.
