Sadio Mane bags an eighth goal of the season as Liverpool leave it late at Goodison. Daniel Sturridge climbs off the bench to help make the breakthrough as the Reds stand firm in defence to serve up a fourth clean sheet in six.

On The Rise

Sadio Mane
A late winner at Goodison took the Liverpool wide man to just one point behind Eden Hazard in the race for second spot in the FPL midfield standings.

Mane has thrived since Philippe Coutinho limped out of action last month, serving up two goals and four assists in the last five Gameweeks.

Frustratingly for his 20.9% FPL owners, Senegal’s qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (which gets underway in January 14) means they will soon need to make exit plans.

Nonetheless, Mane should still be around for three more Gameweeks, with the Reds facing back-to-back home clashes against Stoke and Man City prior to a trip to Sunderland on January 2.

Daniel Sturridge
Emerging from the bench as a replacement for Divock Origi late in the second-half, Sturridge needed little time to make an impact.

Earning the assist for Mane’s goal after his shot rebounded off the post, the England international’s return to action arrives just as the fixtures pick up pace.

Given that Liverpool play Stoke, Man City and and Sunderland over the space of six days from next Tuesday onwards, we can expect a degree of rest and rotation, allowing Sturridge the chance to build up his minutes after another period on the sidelines.

If – a big if – he can steer clear of injuries, Mane’s imminent departure could even offer Sturridge further opportunity to establish himself under Jurgen Klopp over the next month or so.

Nathaniel Clyne
The 1-0 win at Goodison took Liverpool’s tally to five clean sheets for the season, with four arriving in the last six Gameweeks.

Impressively, Clyne has now collected bonus points on all five occasions that the Merseysiders have chalked up a shutout, underlining just why he’s the priciest pick amongst Jurgen Klopp’s backline regulars.

The Reds are braced for a mixed upcoming schedule, though boast three excellent fixtures (STO, SWA, sun) in the next five that look promising for further defensive returns.

In Decline

Divock Origi
The Belgian’s recent form can barely be faulted, having scored in four successive Gameweeks prior to last night’s blank.

Yet the impact of fit-again Sturridge off the bench is a concern for Origi’s 8.7% of FPL owners and there’s every chance that the England man could nick at least one start off the youngster due to the hectic nature of next week’s schedule.

With Philippe Coutinho also closing in on a return, Origi’s starting berth now appears to be under severe pressure.

Roberto Firmino
It’s six straight blanks now for the Liverpool midfielder, who continues to toil on the left flank as a result of Coutinho’s ankle injury absence.

Although his compatriot is rumoured to be hopeful of returning before the New Year, Firmino – the third most transferred out player last week – continues to lose owners at pace.

Over 10,000 FPL managers have already shipped him since the weekend, with the switch to Theo Walcott looking very appealing ahead of Arsenal’s fine upcoming schedule.

Romelu Lukaku
The decline of Everton’s frontman shows no sign of slowing down after yet another abject display.

After starting the season with a goal or assist in six of his first nine, Lukaku has subsequently blanked in six of the last seven Gameweeks.

The schedule does turn in his favour from Gameweek 22, though there seems little chance that his current 25% ownership will remain loyal until that point.

    Hi chaps, which looks best?

    a) Mane Capoue to Sanchez De Roon
    b) Kane Siggy to Negredo Sanchez
    c) Kane Lallana to Sanchez Negredo

B/C allow me to save the following week then do Mane Defoe to 6.6 Kun for free

With a it would mean a -4 to downgrade Defoe or a defender

Surely people have to many fires to put out to have enough time to sell Kingsley? On his way to a price drop and I don't get it.

Looking to go Williams, Hazard, Carroll -> Valencia, Wally, Benteke ahead of GW 20. Leaves me with enough money if I downgrade Capoue to De Roon or Mane to Cout to have a way from Ibra to Kun if I desire too.

What's everyone's plan when Aguero is back? His price is almost certainly going to rocket up the moment the flag disappears, and that game with Liverpool could easily be a goal fest. On the other hand, he can't be that sharp after a spell out (Kun normally takes a bit of time to rev up), and his form prior to the ban was struggling to justify the price - I, like many, had sold him before he even got suspended. Is it worth the mass restructuring, or should we prioritise other players and see how he looks?

    1. Shirokov(c)
      • 9 Years

Wasn't justifying his price before the suspension so no, I will not be getting him back in until he returns to form.

looking at the fixtures, they're pretty awful aside from Burnley. If you're willing to ride out that game without him, you could easily do it long term. Problem would be a goal v Pool.

depends on how other strikers are going.
if Ibra & Costa carry on as they are now then in no rush to get him back.

Sub: Forster / Anichebe / Ake / Kingsley

  16. HurriKane

I think the structure of the team is crucial.

You need to pick players from a price range that have a pool of equally good options

For eg here's my team atm

Sanchez Hazard Eriksen Siggy (De roon)
    Ibra Costa Rondon

    Eriksen could become Theo Coutinho
Siggy could become Lallana Chadli Zaha
    Hazard/Sanchez // KDB Mane
    Rondon- // Tekkers Defoe

Its about flexibility and timing the transfers at the right time. You just cant stick to one bunch this season. Agree ?

I generally agree, there will always be exceptions like in the past with Alli, Mahrez, Kane though.

    2. ashkroft
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

Indeed! However, i think those pools are a bit ambitious in the long run. Leaving out your defense when discussing team structure may be a bit misguided, also - fitting aguero into that bunch will create some more challenges in the price ranges.
With players like Brunt, Alonso, Pva etc- shipping some money down the line could prove wisely.

      1. HurriKane
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

        *meant flexibility in attack

my defence would be Alonso Lovren Brunt (Pieters Amat) which is decent i guess

Oohhh like it as we pretty much have the same team, that is food for thought although depends if I want Aguero in.

I'd be looking to get rid of Kane in your position. For Ibra, if you can.

Need a £4.4 mil defender to enable me to get Sanchez in my team this week. Would it be silly to get Ake in just to bench him since he's unavailable to play against Chelsea? Would play Amat instead, but Bournemouth's fixtures after this week are pretty good and I don't think there's any better defenders under £4.4 mil.

If you need to do it to get Sanchez, and you've got someone else to play this week, then go for it, it makes sense.

I'm considering doing the same, but to get Ibra. Ake will be a good long term option. One week on the bench won't hurt.

Zlatan: "The older I get, the better I am. I'm like red wine. Do you like red wine? I'm the perfect example of that. I've played in many different competitions and countries, but I got used to the conditions everywhere quickly. Even in England, I'm already almost fully used to. I'm content, I feel very well. I'm 35, but I feel like I'm 20. I think I could play even when I' 50."

I'd go Kane -- Ibra. Firmino looked dangerous at times last night and might yet come good again. Kane, by contrast, looks a busted flush.
