Zlatan gets one last assessment, Middlesbrough earn credit for their unglamorous efficiency and we look ahead to ill-timed crunch that ensures that Fantasy Football will remain a major festive distraction. Here’s our final say on Gameweek 17.

The Player

It just had to be Zlatan.

It was clearly naive of us to write him off. The severe drought from Gameweeks 5-10 was obviously the Swede’s blue period: a temporary spell of decline that was to eventually give way to an explosion of colour, as the goals and points flowed freely once more.

Subsequently, Zlatan’s season is befitting of the rollercoaster cliché, delivering the heady heights of the 13-point Gameweek 2 haul, before dipping dramatically to return just eight points over five disastrous Autumn fixtures.

But now Ibrahimovic is firmly in the ascent. His seven goals in six outings have lit the touch paper, and Fantasy Premier League managers are requiring little persuasion.

Diego Costa’s flash of yellow and Harry Kane’s sudden White Hart Lane impotence has fanned the flames: more than 303,000 have already swooped ahead of Monday’s Gameweek 18 deadline.

Ibrahimovic himself states he can go on scoring goals until he’s 50. Jose Mourinho has suggested that his starting role is assured, while Manchester United’s short-term fixtures hint that regression is unlikely. It’s difficult to begin constructing a counter argument.

The question now surrounds Zlatan’s future in our squads, with a fork in the road approaching.

The Team

Middlesbrough may just prove to be a godsend this season.

Aitor Karanka’s side arrived in the top flight with a reputation as an efficient, resilient force. Perhaps low on spontaneity and attacking ambition, they are an organised unit, hard-wired to earn results.

‘Boro have lived up to that billing and, should it continue, look destined to provide a major ally to Fantasy managers well into 2017.

The 3-0 victory over Swansea City was a rarity. That was Middlesbrough cutting loose, with Alvaro Negredo flourishing.

The Spaniard proved a powerful go-to option in the early Gameweeks and, in many respects, has mirrored Ibrahimovic in his rapid descent and then eventual recovery.

Just as he did in the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Negredo sits just underneath Zlatan for transfers in, his value turning heads and harvesting new owners.

If you can judge a striker’s confidence by the nature of his goals, then there’s little doubt that the two strikes against Swansea were a signpost directing us towards bigger things. Clinical, with a hint of arrogance, they were goals of a man in form, intent on maintaining a run of four in his last four starts.

But the appeal of Karanka’s side doesn’t start and end with their lone striker.

Gaston Ramirez offers a wandering and inventive alternative to the Spaniard – a fourth midfielder option that has returned two goals and two assists in his last five starts.

Then, at the back, we find some valuable gems.

While the jury is still out on George Friend’s re-installment in Karanka’s backline, we can still plunder Ben Gibson’s security and bonus point potential, or opt for the cheaper Callum Chambers alongside him.

Back-to-back away trips at Burnley and Manchester United will provide stern festive tests but, following that, we will be checking in at the Riverside ahead of three home fixtures in four Gameweeks.

All opportunities for Karanka’s side to collect further clean sheets and for Ramirez and Negredo to speed their trajectory as value acquisitions.

The Talking Point

Gameweek 19 will bridge the gap between Christmas and New Year, ensuring that Fantasy managers have little opportunity to relax and let down their guard.

With just days to ponder our decision-making and with friends and family providing a pull, it could just represent a key period in our season.

Both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero return to the menu, forcing us to consider instant recalls or at least form mid-term strategies to react.

Zlatan appears equipped to cover our needs for now, but both Costa and Aguero clearly have the talent to prompt another shake up.

Offering very different profiles, Costa will be backed for an immediate return to the scoresheet against Stoke City, while Aguero will provide a points time bomb – a 2-3 goal haul will be set, and his non-owners will watch and wait, hoping that they are prompted to move for his services before the big bang.

The winter Wildcard allows for rebuilding but, with potential double Gameweeks in mind, many of us will reject that option to carry out surgery and throw down points hits in order to find a solution.

In such a turbulent season, we should expect a new twist – perhaps a Kane revival or even a Daniel Sturridge hat-trick – another event that will introduce a fresh variable.

But, as it stands, we know Gameweek 19 already offers a ready-made dilemma and we suspect that the choices we make could just be our next big turning point.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Can’t see much wrong with your team. I don’t think there’s any need for a hit this gameweek, at least. If Kane fails again (which he probably won’t since I took him out), you could consider getting Costa in for him. When Coutinho comes back, you may want to reshuffle to get him (or Firmino who also might benefit him being back), perhaps taking out Origi. It’ll be interesting to see what Hazard does against Bournemouth.

This season is going very much like my first in FPL, didn't pay too much attention to begin with, had a few rivals that played every week. Was losing out quite badly around November/December, 1.3m rank (Much worse back then that is now.) *googles fantasy football help*, became an addict, finished the season 56k, season after 18k, season after that 186.

Now this season, started a team, didn't think much of it, then found some time and got a love for it again, back on fantasy football scout when I find my interest and up the rankings I've been climbing, not sure I'll hit top 100k but I've definitely missed this game!

Anyone else had a break and came back to it? Or anyone else peaked with a good ranking then lost interest, I think that was my problem.

Bayern just have too many good players. Have the individuals to win games even if the team aren't playing well.

Shame BvB have forgotten how to defend really...

Yup, helps having two of the best dribblers in the world in Robben & Costa being able to win most 1v1's with ease even on a bad day. This is just the most un-RB performance of the season (no surprise since it's vs the best team), going into this they were more consistent & just looked way more disciplined & cohesive overall. Their high-press is usually efficient & relentless.

Bayern are just bypassing with it ease & RB's workrate/intensity wasn't there. Shame really. Vidal's done a great job limiting Keita's influence on the game, clamps on him with ease & in a heartbeat. Ah we'll on to the next one. The RB vs Leverkusen match or the Hoffenheim v Dortmund match from the other days probably won't be topped. Insane matches.

Result will please most regardless. Nobody in Germany even likes RB Leipzig anyway 😛 Basically the new Hoffenheim.

Köln fans earlier in the season took it a step further & stopped their coach from arriving by sitting in front of it in protest of how the club has risen.

Oh and, Hoffenheim vs Mainz 05. Even more insane.

& for good reason, fans at the Leverkusen match vs Köln match right now were all cheering when they heard RB were down 0-2 😆 Telling when they hate them more than Bayern. Old money vs nouveau riche threatening their CL spots.

Think I missed that one, need to give it a watch at some point! But from a sheer quality of football perspective, & just tactical point of view. Those two matches were the highlights for me this season & were two of the best in Europe so far, IMO. Crazy that they're still undefeated, Nagelsmann is going places.

Didn't notice this reply. Agree on Nagelsmann, seems destined for Bayern in the future IMO.

I'm equally impressed by the job Niko Kovač is doing at Eintracht Frankfurt tbh. He's almost performing miracles with a side that was so very nearly relegated last season, surviving due to the relegation play-off match vs Nürnberg.

Very impressive, especially when you consider that their signings in the last window were mostly loans (Vallejo, Mascarell, Varela, Hector, Rebić...). I guess the change of system has played a large part, plus the Commerzbank being a notoriously difficult place to play still. They don't always play the best brand of football, but definitely punching above their weight.

Aymen Barkok is a player to keep an eye on.

...will be the classic overreaction used many times after this game.

Truth is everybody knew RB Leipzig were for real & were going to challenge for European places, but that challenge was expected to be in a few years. Nobody expected it to be right away, not even Ralf Rangnick...

No match for Bayern, but what they're doing is still remarkable. Naby Keita, Emil Forsberg & Willi Orban have been performers of the season so far in their positions.

They're also missing Marvin Compper's experience tonight. Vital experience in such a young team.

FIrmino improved against Everton, back on the radar but not until he breaks the drought for me. I got rid when he was looking piss poor but worth consideration.

Mane, I'd have him If I could, but going to go without until AfCon and consider him again after.

Coutinho a must for me when he's back, I'm not sure what Mane not being around will do to his outputs though, but at 8.2/3m he's a steal.

Lallana is the budget option, playing deeper than the rest but a good option of that, frustrated me earlier in the season then got injured. Personally finding it hard to consider him for that reason.

Definitely not number 1. Holebas has a nice fixture, long term though maybe worth it with a FT.

Not a bad shout, Benteke is expensive for what he is though.

You should be safe with the returns on paper, but it's incredibly risky. If you think the move is longterm enough, you should do it, but note that Eriksen's stats are immene right now and could fire any time.
