Zlatan gets one last assessment, Middlesbrough earn credit for their unglamorous efficiency and we look ahead to ill-timed crunch that ensures that Fantasy Football will remain a major festive distraction. Here’s our final say on Gameweek 17.

The Player

It just had to be Zlatan.

It was clearly naive of us to write him off. The severe drought from Gameweeks 5-10 was obviously the Swede’s blue period: a temporary spell of decline that was to eventually give way to an explosion of colour, as the goals and points flowed freely once more.

Subsequently, Zlatan’s season is befitting of the rollercoaster cliché, delivering the heady heights of the 13-point Gameweek 2 haul, before dipping dramatically to return just eight points over five disastrous Autumn fixtures.

But now Ibrahimovic is firmly in the ascent. His seven goals in six outings have lit the touch paper, and Fantasy Premier League managers are requiring little persuasion.

Diego Costa’s flash of yellow and Harry Kane’s sudden White Hart Lane impotence has fanned the flames: more than 303,000 have already swooped ahead of Monday’s Gameweek 18 deadline.

Ibrahimovic himself states he can go on scoring goals until he’s 50. Jose Mourinho has suggested that his starting role is assured, while Manchester United’s short-term fixtures hint that regression is unlikely. It’s difficult to begin constructing a counter argument.

The question now surrounds Zlatan’s future in our squads, with a fork in the road approaching.

The Team

Middlesbrough may just prove to be a godsend this season.

Aitor Karanka’s side arrived in the top flight with a reputation as an efficient, resilient force. Perhaps low on spontaneity and attacking ambition, they are an organised unit, hard-wired to earn results.

‘Boro have lived up to that billing and, should it continue, look destined to provide a major ally to Fantasy managers well into 2017.

The 3-0 victory over Swansea City was a rarity. That was Middlesbrough cutting loose, with Alvaro Negredo flourishing.

The Spaniard proved a powerful go-to option in the early Gameweeks and, in many respects, has mirrored Ibrahimovic in his rapid descent and then eventual recovery.

Just as he did in the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Negredo sits just underneath Zlatan for transfers in, his value turning heads and harvesting new owners.

If you can judge a striker’s confidence by the nature of his goals, then there’s little doubt that the two strikes against Swansea were a signpost directing us towards bigger things. Clinical, with a hint of arrogance, they were goals of a man in form, intent on maintaining a run of four in his last four starts.

But the appeal of Karanka’s side doesn’t start and end with their lone striker.

Gaston Ramirez offers a wandering and inventive alternative to the Spaniard – a fourth midfielder option that has returned two goals and two assists in his last five starts.

Then, at the back, we find some valuable gems.

While the jury is still out on George Friend’s re-installment in Karanka’s backline, we can still plunder Ben Gibson’s security and bonus point potential, or opt for the cheaper Callum Chambers alongside him.

Back-to-back away trips at Burnley and Manchester United will provide stern festive tests but, following that, we will be checking in at the Riverside ahead of three home fixtures in four Gameweeks.

All opportunities for Karanka’s side to collect further clean sheets and for Ramirez and Negredo to speed their trajectory as value acquisitions.

The Talking Point

Gameweek 19 will bridge the gap between Christmas and New Year, ensuring that Fantasy managers have little opportunity to relax and let down their guard.

With just days to ponder our decision-making and with friends and family providing a pull, it could just represent a key period in our season.

Both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero return to the menu, forcing us to consider instant recalls or at least form mid-term strategies to react.

Zlatan appears equipped to cover our needs for now, but both Costa and Aguero clearly have the talent to prompt another shake up.

Offering very different profiles, Costa will be backed for an immediate return to the scoresheet against Stoke City, while Aguero will provide a points time bomb – a 2-3 goal haul will be set, and his non-owners will watch and wait, hoping that they are prompted to move for his services before the big bang.

The winter Wildcard allows for rebuilding but, with potential double Gameweeks in mind, many of us will reject that option to carry out surgery and throw down points hits in order to find a solution.

In such a turbulent season, we should expect a new twist – perhaps a Kane revival or even a Daniel Sturridge hat-trick – another event that will introduce a fresh variable.

But, as it stands, we know Gameweek 19 already offers a ready-made dilemma and we suspect that the choices we make could just be our next big turning point.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think we have to surmise what this is about at this point, which is difficult. So, in my uninformed opinion, I think it's the same knock he had that kept him out of the game prior to last. I guess he is not 100%, but he was fit enough to play the full 90' last game. I own, and do not plan on selling unless I hear more definitive news that he is truly hurt. What I find funny about the news is that most players in most sports get medical treatment of some kind between games. I guess he is working with a specific physical therapist/trainer, and to me, that is likely the whole story, but we really do not know nuthin'.

    Heaton
    Jones - Valencia - Holebas
    Mane - Hazard - Eriksen - Payet
    Kane - Ibra - Defoe

(Robinson, Wilson, Pieters, Coquelin). 0 ITB, 1 FT.

Sanchez and Walcott are rising, Hazard is flagged, and potentially missing a game and falling with hard fixtures on the horizon, my bench is poor, and Arsenal have great fixtures which I need to take advantage of. I was just going to do Eriksen to Walcott for this week and give Hazard the next two games. However with the doubts over Hazard and the price shifts, is it a good idea to get my transfers done this week?

I'm thinking: Hazard, Eriksen, Payet to Sanchez, Walcott, Sigurdsson for a -8.

In two weeks I can then do Kane and Siggi (after his two home games) to Aguero (C) and Chadli (before his nice games). Then get rid of Mane before afcon.

I was going to do a couple of minus fours in the next few weeks anyway, but a -8 just seems a lot. Should I do it?

    1. RAFA THE GAFFA
      • 9 Years

      1. Stokelona
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

I know minus 8 does seem like a lot when I'm getting rid of 3 good players, two of whom have good fixtures. And I know Hazard will probably still play on Boxing day and it's probably just media rubbish. But I want to get Sanchez with Arsenal's fixtures and his price is rising tonight. And even if Hazard plays on boxing day, he could sit out the next game, and he didn't play well last season when he was carrying injuries- he said himself that's why his form was good earlier this season. Maybe I'm overthinking it, Sanchez could miss a game for all I know, but I think I'm going to take the gamble. Think this season you have to move quickly, so I'll just say thank you to Eriksen for the points and change things up. If I have Sanchez in for the next 6 games then hopefully he will more than make those points up

If hazard gets 15 points and Sanchez gets 2 or 3 this week it would be a major loss. So not a good move imo.. too much risk. Chelsea will have the least rotation over the break also.

      1. Hobolicious
        • 10 Years

Doubtful Wenger will rotate Sánchez at all. Way too important for Arsenal.

As for Hazard getting 15 points and Sánchez getting 2-3 points I seriously doubt it. However, they could easily match each other this weekend.

The reason I am strongly considering the moves are 1) injury doubts and 2) Sánchez being a possible captain.

    I have 2FT this week and exact money to do;
    Kane & McAuley >> Zlatan & P.Jones

Or swap Costa out instead (but need to find 0.3m) if so,then where do I start?

    Foster - Pickford
    Rose - McAuley - Holebas - Nyom - Kingsley
    Alexis - Hazard - Walcott - Lallana - Allen
    Costa - Kane - Iheanacho

    Thanks in advance guys 🙂

Why people talking about hits for Siggy/Llorente? Wham 4 of last 6 games were away to Spurs Man U Liverpool and home to Arsenal. The other 2 CS and Reid and Cresswell back now

I think after 19 weeks, personally, it's a reasonable enough time to play an early 2nd Wildcard on my own intuition.

Doublers late in the season can be plotted around in advance with a couple of hits and we already have a reasonable idea who's performing where anyway.

Besides backing Courtois and another Chelsea defender I also don't see any great case for splashing out on a premium back three either.

I'm thinking about cutting back on the hits at around the £106m TV mark and nailing my team by fixtures.

Anyone else's opinion on this would be appreciated.

See what you're saying but the crux of everyone's team is Alonso/Azpi , Hazard, Sanchez, Siggy/Walcott and 2 premium strikers.

Can't see you making a vast difference to your squad with a Jan wildcard tbh. You ain't transferring them out so you won't have many positions/much cash to play with.

Yeah, I'm done with Hazard after GW19, tbh. You can't ride him for value, despite the odd explosion, and the likes of Eriksen, Walcott and Coutinho seem better options overall. Juggling three premium strikers with Sanchez from fixture to fixture seems the better route to claw back some points, although I'm sure many have fallen into this trap before.

    Sanchez | Hazard | Siggy | Lallana | Capoue

I wouldn't even be surprised to see Aguero on the bench every now and again.

We love Aguero but I bet his new manager is less than impressed with him so far. Seven matches on the bench for bans up to now won't be very inspiring for Pep....and he's not exactly looked world class for some of the games under him.

Wondering if there could be a half decent team out there accommodating Kun, Ibra, Costa & Sanchez....Could have this team in 4 moves, too risky?

    Heaton (Robo)

    Alonso, Brunt, Ake, Pieters, Amat

    Sanchez, Walcott, Phillips, Rodriguez, Capoue

    Kun, Costa, Ibra

    Would currently leave .4 itb
