Following yesterday’s look at the teams who face the most favourable upcoming schedules, our focus now turns to those braced for trickier times ahead.

The limited assets among the Stoke City and Hull City’s rosters have their stock reduced by a testing spell, while Tottenham Hotspur’s prospects must also be called into question in the coming month.

Stoke City

(liv, che, WAT, sun, MUN, EVE)

The Potters face four of the current top nine over the coming period, suggesting that returns are likely to be in short supply, particularly in attacking areas.

Over the last four Gameweeks, Liverpool have allowed the fewest shots inside the box (16), while Chelsea have only conceded once.

Goals also look set to be hard to come by against Man United, given that Jose Mourinho’s men have been breached on just two occasions in their last four matches, while Sunderland have kept clean sheets in two of their last four at the Stadium of Light.

So while the Watford match-up is pretty favourable, it’s likely that Joe Allen and his fellow Stoke City attackers will struggle to garner returns over the next month or so.

From a defensive standpoint, it’s more of a mixed bag.

Liverpool have netted nine goals in their last four matches and will be backed to find find further goals, while Chelsea haven’t failed to score since Gameweek 6. United look to have turned the corner over the past week, so they also appear likely to breach the Potters rearguard.

Nonetheless, with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku struggling for goals and the Watford and Sunderland clashes also offering a decent chance of defensive returns, owners of Erik Pieters and Lee Grant may be happy to hold for now.

Hull City

(MCI, EVE, wba, BOU, che, mun)

Up against six of the current top 10, it’s difficult to find any positives among the Tigers’ forthcoming schedule.

Certainly, from a defensive standpoint, clean sheets are surely set to remain scarce, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United all fancied to notch against Mike Phelan’s rearguard, while West Bromwich Albion have scored 10 goals in their last four home matches.

Bournemouth have also netted in each of their last three away trips, while Everton will provide testing opposition.

Hull’s defenders have been off the radar all season, having conceded 36 goals, and that will surely remain the case over the next six Gameweeks.

From an attacking point of view, goals appear unlikely at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford, but the other four fixtures could perhaps see Phelan’s side grab featch a handful of goals.

City have only managed one clean sheet in seven, while Bournemouth have conceded six goals in their last two away matches.

The West Brom and Everton match-ups could also see Hull score, but with no favourable fixture in the next six, Robert Snodgrass’ 5.2% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will no doubt be forming exit plans in and around the festive spell.

Tottenham Hotspur

(sot, wat, CHE, WBA, mci, sun)

Mauricio Pochettino’s side only face two of their next six at home, and face a very mixed run of fixtures over the upcoming weeks.

Goals could be hard to come by in the short-term, given that Southampton have kept clean sheets in their last three home encounters, while Chelsea have managed nine shut-outs in their previous 11 matches.

Watford have shipped eight goals in their last four, but West Brom are unlikely to concede many, while, although City are vulnerable at the back, a trip to the Etihad also has to be seen as an unfavourable match-up.

The trip to Sunderland is appealing, however, particularly if the Black Cats are without the likes of Lamine Kone and Papy Djilobodji due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The form of Christian Eriksen could mean he can still keep ticking over though this spell, but three consecutive blanks has the alarm bells ringing for Harry Kane owners.

The Tottenham forward is the second most transferred player out in FPL this week, with over 87,000 managers shedding the England international.

The outlook isn’t perhaps quite so gloomy for the prospects of Spurs defenders, with Saints having failed to score in two of their last four, while Sunderland and Watford are also struggling for goals, managing just three and four respectively over the last four Gameweeks.

The West Brom clash in Gameweek 21 is also reasonably favourable, although defensive returns appear unlikely against Chelsea and City.

It’s the ability of Tottenham defenders to register attacking returns that keeps them as viable options for our five-man backlines, but premium defenders from Chelsea and Arsenal, in particular, may prove to be stronger options over the next few weeks.

Also be wary of…

Sunderland
The Black Cats come up against a number of tough defences over the next six Gameweeks (mun, bur, LIV, STO, wba, TOT), so Jermain Defoe’s 25.4% ownership should perhaps be considering their options.

The Sunderland striker has proven he can score against any opposition, but chances are going to be at a premium, with United, Liverpool and Spurs the three sides allowing the fewest number of shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks.

Burnley and West Brom are also fairly strong at home, while Stoke City have kept three clean sheets in their last five.

Sunderland defenders haven’t been popular options this season, mainly due to the value offered by Jordan Pickford, and save points will likely be required for the young goalkeeper to keep ticking over through some difficult fixtures.

Liverpool
The Reds face a very mixed run of fixtures (STO, MCI, sun, mun, SWA, CHE) over the next six Gameweeks, although four of their next six are at home.

They will also have to deal with the absence of Sadio Mane due to the AFCON, with the winger expected to leave after the Gameweek 20 clash against Sunderland. The expected return of Philippe Coutinho in the New Year should soften that blow, however.

Jurgen Klopp’s side should still be able to find the back of the net on a regular basis, particularly in the short-term, although goals may be scarce against United and Chelsea.

Defensive returns appear less likely, though, with City, United and Chelsea all expected to breach the Reds backline, meaning Liverpool defenders are perhaps best ignored over the coming window.

Swansea City
Once the next two home matches against West Ham United and Bournemouth are out of the way, the Swans’ schedule (cpl, ARS, liv, SOT) turns particularly nasty.

Clean sheets, in particular, appear very unlikely in those four matches, so Jordi Amat looks likely to remain consigned to our benches, as he has been for the majority of the season.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s ownership has increased over the past few weeks, with form and fixtures both in his favour, but with that about to change, the Iceland international looks set to be moved on by many Fantasy managers in the New Year.

The same can also be said of Fernando Llorente, as there looks to be stronger budget forward options available once we edge into 2017.

I'm very tempted. Convince me why ibra won't bag a brace... that's what's holding me back

Cause until last week nobody cared about Ibra. He bags one brace with a lucky second goal and everyone is convinced he is a must-have.

It is Sunderland though.. I'd completely agree with that if it were a team like Burnley let's say.
He has great stats and is starting to find the back of the net. That combination and playing Sunderland is almost too good to be true

Sunderland are actually not that bad. I mean they're bad, but Bournemouth are worse imo. And United aren't exactly screaming goal hauls. I think Ibra is the safest option (just like Kane was) but I don't reckon he'll get many points.

It's great and you had him for those games, so kudos to you. But it's still Costa-like, wouldn't you say? Consistent but not explosive. And United as a team look less explosive than Chelsea too.

              Scores of 12, 11, 12 in those 6 games which isn't bad for a captain I reckon.

There's lots of good options this week though so can see why people wouldn't go for it.

His underlying stats are too good to ignore. All his done the last few weeks is become less 'unlucky' with the chances he has created i.e Keeper making great saves, woodwork, assists been scuppered by others.

This article: "Jurgen Klopp’s side should still be able to find the back of the net on a regular basis, particularly in the short-term, although goals may be scarce against United and Chelsea."

Article last night (about United): "while a clean sheet appears unlikely against Liverpool."

So Liverpool may not score vs United but a United CS vs Liverpool is unlikely. I don't get the discrepancy that often is showed in these strong/weak articles.

But on the other hand Klopp is yet to score against United in two league games. Plus United concede 0.75 goals per game at home. Bit weird to post that a United CS is 'unlikely'.

But Liverpool score 2.0 goals away from home and, given the two stats, I'd say a single goal is probably likely which is kind of what we intimated with those statements.

Which of the statements do you not agree with?

You feel that Liverpool are unlikely to score at Old Trafford?

Or do you feel that Liverpool will score several goals, perhaps 2-3, vs Manchester United?

We see it as Liverpool will probably score but not score many. That's what those statements in those articles get across, in my opinion. Struggling to see a discrepancy.

We didn't say Liverpool won't score, we just feel that their goal output will be more limited in a trip to OT.

I just feel sometimes in these strong/weak articles you just look at the team names and conclude whether a fixture is good or bad. No explanation whatsoever, 'they are a good team therefore that fixture is bad for their opponent'.

Recent history (last 3 league games between the teams) suggests that Liverpool don't score many against United. So saying that United are 'unlikely' to hold a CS at home (where they don't concede many goals anyway) vs a team they don't seem to concede many against is a bit weird. Fair enough if the opinion is based on stats but then you should maybe mention that stat as well. Just writing 'United are unlikely to hold a CS vs Liverpool full stop' seems so lazy, and I get the impression that the only reason you're writing that is because Liverpool are a good team (which they are but even the most casual of fpl players know that).

I get that you don't want to give away too much data and stats in the open articles but there should still be room for a bit more reasoning than just saying 'a clean sheet is unlikely'.

My team this week is a bit meh, especially my defense.

    Foster (Pickford)
    Alonso, Clyne, Smith, Amat (McAuley)
    Hazard, Sanchez, Siggy, Eriksen (Fletcher)
    Anichebe, Ibra C (Costa)

I have 1 free transfer left. Should I just go with this and hope for the best? I'd have to take hits to make any meaningful transfers. 0 in the bank.

Save 100% for me. Unless you'd stand to make money by dropping Costa and picking him up should he drop again. Otherwise, it is a waste of 2 transfers that could be better spent getting in Aguero for Kane.

Have mostly good memories of boxing day in FPL.

Think it was the year before that I captained Sanchez and pretty much everyone on my team scored. He missed a pen but followed it up with 10 points.

Then there was the year I spent ages deciding whether to captain VDV or Tevez. Can't remember which one I went for but both scored 16 points and it didn't matter in the end 🙂

Hoping the same will happen. Would hate FPL to spoil Christmas 🙂

I love Christmas football. I was actually going to say that it usually brings unexpected results but we've had that a lot already this season! It's usually a great time for us FPL nerds to make good ground due to the amount of deadlines in such a small timeframe.

Do people feel confident Origi starts this GW? Having a hard time seeing Sturridge going from a cameo to a start, but would Can starting cause a domino effect in the more attacking spots?

Klopp has rarely had to deal with a fully fit Sturridge
We will have to wait and see how he deploys him when fully fit i suspect he will win his favor

Who to captain? It's currently on Ibra:

        Pickford
        Mee, Alonso, Jones
        Hazard, Sanchez, Walcott, Siggy, Capoue
        Origi, Ibra

        Foster, Amat, Evans, Costa

depends on many factors I guess
if you are chasing a lead hazard and Sanchez looks good options this week

although U can not possibly go wrong with Ibra this week as he is in form

          YMA says siggy
might be a good punt too

make your choice using this 🙂

benteke if you afford without any major downgrade in your team
will be interesting to see how he fares of Zaha goes to ACON

i really like Rondon as a pick tbh
good fixtures and saves money too

          Negredo
no for me he has only scored in 3 matches I think so need to see if that going to be change

overall Rondon +1.1 itb will be my advice
Benteke if you easily afford as he has penalties so that is the premium you are paying for him

Best GK replacement for Karius (to partner Pickford). Money not an issue though I can't stretch to Courtois

        Other DF is

        Alonso - Jones - Friend - Amat - Pieters

        1. Phil Dagger ⭐
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

money will always be a issue if not now then later on
so advice is to go a little cheap for keepers and save as much money as you can to upgrade other areas

Heaton has a very good rotation with Pickford and is almost matching the premium picks so that combination looks very good

Arsenal good fixtures but not much signs they are going to keep a cleanie soon

DDG is a good option but pricey but if you don't mind that get him

otherwise Valdes /Heaton looks good with their fixtures

      5. Hurricane Gilbert
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

You know my defensive issues Phil 😛 Can't really get a Chelsea defender withouh multiple hits. And if I wait they will increase and then bad fixtures are coming up. My question: Is it wiser to try to find cheaper defenders with better fixtures instead? Can Phil Jones and Chris Brunt make up for the loss of Alonso?

        1. Phil Dagger ⭐
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

I think a Chelsea defender like Alonso
looks a must now as they are very strong
          defensively and Conte's teams have
          always been well drilled defensively
plus there are chances Alonso getting
among goals or assists even if he don't
          get a cleanie

          remember when Chelsea had difficult
          fixtures 10-11 weeks ago
they came sailing past that test with 9
          cleanies in 11

          3-4-3 has really changed all

so for me Alonso is must

then the talk of Brunt and Jones

you should get them regardless of Chelsea defender ..It will help you maximise your points 😉

            as of now keep
            change to Brunt after arsenal
            or double up 😉

really depends on your full defence

Who do you feel is a better FPL option in the Man City attack come the new year: Kun or KDB?

On one hand, Kun will just have come back rested, but will have Gabriel Jesus as competition. On the other hand, Pep knows how vital KDB is creatively to the team, but may rest him to preserve him.

many people are going city less with no kun or KDB even after kun returns as it let them to keep all other big hitters

Ok that's what I was also thinking...
For me it's as of now Kane + Siggy > Kun + 6M mid OR 7.5M fwd + KDB OR 10M fwd + Coutinho. It just feels more likely to find value at that price in midfielders than in forwards.

The rest of my attack is Sanchez / Hazard / Phillips / Ramirez / Ibra / Benteke.

Benteke - he's a bit like Charlie Austin a few years back for QPR.

So difficult to call. CBs seldom get rested though, as they are fit enough to play all games.

      Strategy “fully rotatable team”?

I’ve gotten a reasonably high team value (£105.6), not because I’ve been hunting for it, but rather because I’ve been impatient and often done transfers right away (sorry for the fluctuating prices, by the way). If I hadn’t been sticking with Firmino still, it would’ve been even higher.

Then comes the question: What to do with all this money? A common strategy here seems to be having a cheap goalkeeper performing well, a quite cheap defence (but with Alonso and/or a Tottenham defender), and, importantly, the cheapest possible bench (~ £4.0 goalkeeper and defender, ~£4.5 midfielder) to allow for great spending in midfield and forward positions. A proven strategy, I guess many will claim.

But, does anyone have experience with having 15 most-weeks fully playable players and rotate them according to fixtures?

If I downgrade Hazard to Eriksen after the Bournemouth game (in case Hazard will fail to bring in the points), I can get this team:

      Heaton / Foster
      Alonso / Clyne / Cédric / Holebas / Friend
      Sánchez / Firmino / Eriksen / Phillips / Allen
      Ibrahimovic / Costa / Benteke

This strategy wouldn’t work that well if I had to include Agüero or De Bruyne (without sacrificing Alexis). But as it stands, is it a viable way of playing the game, you think?

I guess it would work best with the strategy of saving a transfer every other week (or so) to being able to restructure the team with two (or three) transfers every now and then.
