His biggest tally of the season. A third successive double-figure total. Sixty-eight points in his last seven Gameweek starts.

We can’t deny the numbers – Zlatan Ibrahimovic is delivering and refusing to leave the door ajar for a cast of competitors up front.

Both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero are now back from the cold and, while we will doubtless begin measuring up for the surgery to install one of that pair alongside the Swede, it currently seems unthinkable to drop the Manchester United striker.

Having scored or assisted 16 of 26 goals scored while he’s been on the pitch, Ibrahimovic has been involved in 61% of United’s goals. While Jose Mourinho’s men have yet to hit the heights to suggest that they are a true attacking force, that’s a difficult statistic to ignore.

Zlatan’s fixtures remain strong and, seemingly classed as “undroppable” by Mourinho; there appears little or no counter argument. Ibrahimovic increased by 0.3 in price ahead of today’s deadline and, again, he’s already ranked second only to Costa for transfers, with another hike looming.

If we wish to opt for two heavyweights in our forward lines, our decision currently appears to create a head-to-head between Costa and Aguero: two strikers who present two very different scenarios.

Chelsea are undoubtedly pacesetters supreme. Their current form and confidence cannot be questioned and, while the fixture list remains demanding, it would be brave to underestimate Antonio Conte’s side against any opposition.

Manchester City’s fixtures are also testing, but they will go to Anfield on New Year’s Eve still in stuttering form.

The Gameweek 17 victory over Arsenal looked priceless in re-establishing their status as title challengers but the performance in tonight’s 3-0 win at Hull City was, for long periods, still unconvincing.

Aguero may be able to circumvent any malaise and doubts – arguably, he could flick the switch and re-invigorate City’s season.

However, at 12.8, he costs a princely sum which would surely restrict flexibility in midfield or defence. In many ways, Aguero now represents a gamble.

That seems an unthinkable and unlikely sentence to write on these pages. The Argentine has, for so long, been a mainstay of the Fantasy Football Scout community and an asset that requires little thought or research. But that is surely no longer the case.

Having missed seven matches of the season through ill-discipline and, with the jury still out on Pep Guardiola’s side, the choice between Costa and Aguero is not straightforward and even appears weighted in the Chelsea man’s favour.

Currently 2.1 cheaper than Aguero, the Spaniard has shown unerring consistency and, crucially, could allow us to retain significant funds in midfield, or even opt for a Blues pairing in defence.

But, as we’ve seen, the landscape can shift so quickly. With just a matter of days before Gameweek 19, our opinions and plans have to remain flexible.

Midfield assets like Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez, in particular, are under constant pressure to perform now that Aguero is back in the game.

Hazard’s spot-kick against Bournemouth may have kept talk of an exodus subdued for now, although two goals in six Gameweek starts is still not enough to justify his selection now that Costa has returned to the equation. We need more from Hazard against Stoke City.

As for Sanchez, he hit a post and fired in more attempts than any other player in Monday’s matches but has now produced just a single goal since his heralded hat-trick at the London Stadium back in Gameweek 14.

Arsenal still appear to be struggling at the Emirates without Santi Cazorla in the double pivot. That needs to change for the visit of Big Sam’s Crystal Palace: we perhaps need to see Sanchez back in the striker’s role. We certainly need him back in the points to stave off any talk of exit plans.

Again, such a knee-jerk reaction seems unthinkable when we look back on the scramble for the Chilean’s services only last month.

But that’s typical of this campaign and, for tonight at least, the only current certainty appears to be relentlessly providing and scoring goals for Manchester United.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ok, so after looking at the mess of a team I have I've decided to drop Pedro (who I just got in this GW for Mane) for Mkhi...meh.Gotta sort Iheanacho with the second FT... and also plan on Kun and watch over Wally and pray for Kane and be afraid of Costa...fml.

You guys know that United were playing the 3rd worst team in the league and Mkhi had the 30 minute slot of them tired - I just hate MU and now I'll have 3 of them. Can't look at myself in the mirror for the shameful act I'm about to commit (talking just about the transfer here).

Interesting you presume that people are considering Michy due to the quality of his goal.

Surely his attacking nature, confidence, 2 goals in 2 games, historical returns in other leagues and dropped price are part of the reason?

Whilst I don't necessarily disagree with you (as posts below indicate) he played 33 minutes on his return from injury, created 3 chances, had 2 shots, scored an (offside) goal.

Bodes pretty well for when he is fully fit.

Holgate a potential option now. Koeman seems to be trying to get the best out of Coleman and Baines (and therefore Lukaku) now Bolasie is out and Gueye is off to AFCON - hence 3 at the back.

Aguero. Costa is not explosive. Only 2 double figure hauls = not C material so waste of $$$. Before today last 4 games Azpi scored 3 less points or thereabouts for what? 6.2 back then?

      - Concern over minutes played over the next couple of gw if his return to fitness is being managed

      - MID are decent defensively. WHM are improving. LIV is a tough game.

      - Mourinho

I've read it. He's complaining about having to respond to price rises and falls a lot quicker. Like I said, just focus on the points. FWIW, my team value is 106.3 and my OR is 60k. Not fantastic but decent I'd say. And that's because I've been focusing on points. I've had to absorb a lot of price rises and falls, but that's what I do. Keyword: absorb. I don't transfer out someone just because he's about to drop if I fancy him over the next few fixtures. Similarly, if I'm priced out of a good transfer, so be it, I know another option will present itself in due course.

    Siggy (c) pickers:

I think there is one issue with the way YMA's method operates - and that is it doesn't look at who the big chances conceded / Goal attempts in box conceded / goals conceded are against. For example, this week, West Ham are top (i.e. worst), but that is because in the last 4 gameweeks they played Arsenal and Liverpool who are a different class to the opposition this week (Swansea). You need to match the stats against the quality of opposition IMO - effectively classify the opposition into groups (e.g. top class, good, average, below average, poor). For example if West Ham had conceded lots of those big chances against Burnley / Hull etc. and were playing Arsenal this week then I would upgrade Sanchez, because Arsenal (top class) are miles better than Burnley / Hull (poor). Hopefully this is taken on board as it is a good article, but just needs some refinement.

True but you also need to look at the risk - Swansea are high risk. IMO always captain a low risk option if the difference between a predicted upside isn't that much.

The thing I posted over and over again to Siggy C posters was Reid and Cresswell were back and Randolph had got a bad rap before 2 CS but the previous 4 games were Arsenal home, Spurs Man U Liverpool away

        1. diesel001
          • 9 Years

Exactly - this is why quality of opposition must be factored in. It is not surprising that West Ham conceded so many big chances against those teams, but Swansea are not at that level so the big chances conceded count should be factored down to take account of this.

You make a good point. I think YMA shouldn't have removed the odds element from his captaincy article. Bookie odds neutralize the effect of the factors you mention, and would certainly have swung it in favor of Zlatan this week.

Also is it a factor that WHM are still not that good at home? They seem to play better away from home. (I haven't looked at stats, just a feeling). And yes I think odds should be included in the article, I find them useful. In the end the Paddy Power article meant I went Ibra (c).

Posts like these make me want to stop doing them altogether.

The article is supposed to act as an aid when choosing a captain, not act as a definitive tool. FPL managers should make their own minds up. It's ironic that when the method highlights a successful, it received praise.

I am disappointed with your response YMA. My post was not a criticism, it was a potential refinement. In the same way that SJAUGEN (A POWERS) made a suggestion on your article (on using multipliers) which you agreed to look into.

I appreciate the effort you put into this article. I actually captained Sanchez this week (a poor choice) so do not blame you or rely on your article for my captaincy choices. But there are a lot of members who do use your article / method and if anyone here can help make it better then personally I believe it has to be a positive thing. Again it is not a criticism of you, your method or article - it is about working together to make your method as successful as possible for the community on here.

I enjoy the article as it makes me think a bit more about who to captain. The fact is that none of us can predict the future and if we could it would be a bit of waste using the power on FPL given more lucrative options. If you enjoy doing it then keep doing it.

      1. Didn't YMA have a ridiculous run of successful captaincy picks a short while ago?

      2. People need to look at all the info and make their own decisions - not blame others.

      3. 000s of opinions/bits of advice come up on here everyday. Nothing is claimed to be gospel.

      4. Anyone can put together an article/hot topic. So you don't like what's available pull your finger out and start writing.

I've got all 4, want Mikhitaryan but think it's Hazard who I'll lose.

Costa just beats him for consistency which gives him the edge for me, the double Chelsea defence would be nice to have in this firmer set of games as they are more likely to grind out a few wins then dish out a few hammerings.

Costa tends to be better in the first half of the season compared to the second, in terms of goalscoring. This was the case when he won the title with Atletico and Chelsea.

Currently got Ibra, Defoe and Origi.
Thinking to do Origi to either one of the below :
    1. Benteke vs Swa. Only if he is still on penalties. Will he still be on penalties or take Cabaye instead as a differential
    2. Rondon vs Hull. He hits a hatrick one game and next 2 games he does nothing
    3. Negredo vs Leicester. Same like Rondon but has penalties in his locker.
I am in the Benteke camp but not convinced after his missed penalty. Will he still have penalties with him.
