His biggest tally of the season. A third successive double-figure total. Sixty-eight points in his last seven Gameweek starts.

We can’t deny the numbers – Zlatan Ibrahimovic is delivering and refusing to leave the door ajar for a cast of competitors up front.

Both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero are now back from the cold and, while we will doubtless begin measuring up for the surgery to install one of that pair alongside the Swede, it currently seems unthinkable to drop the Manchester United striker.

Having scored or assisted 16 of 26 goals scored while he’s been on the pitch, Ibrahimovic has been involved in 61% of United’s goals. While Jose Mourinho’s men have yet to hit the heights to suggest that they are a true attacking force, that’s a difficult statistic to ignore.

Zlatan’s fixtures remain strong and, seemingly classed as “undroppable” by Mourinho; there appears little or no counter argument. Ibrahimovic increased by 0.3 in price ahead of today’s deadline and, again, he’s already ranked second only to Costa for transfers, with another hike looming.

If we wish to opt for two heavyweights in our forward lines, our decision currently appears to create a head-to-head between Costa and Aguero: two strikers who present two very different scenarios.

Chelsea are undoubtedly pacesetters supreme. Their current form and confidence cannot be questioned and, while the fixture list remains demanding, it would be brave to underestimate Antonio Conte’s side against any opposition.

Manchester City’s fixtures are also testing, but they will go to Anfield on New Year’s Eve still in stuttering form.

The Gameweek 17 victory over Arsenal looked priceless in re-establishing their status as title challengers but the performance in tonight’s 3-0 win at Hull City was, for long periods, still unconvincing.

Aguero may be able to circumvent any malaise and doubts – arguably, he could flick the switch and re-invigorate City’s season.

However, at 12.8, he costs a princely sum which would surely restrict flexibility in midfield or defence. In many ways, Aguero now represents a gamble.

That seems an unthinkable and unlikely sentence to write on these pages. The Argentine has, for so long, been a mainstay of the Fantasy Football Scout community and an asset that requires little thought or research. But that is surely no longer the case.

Having missed seven matches of the season through ill-discipline and, with the jury still out on Pep Guardiola’s side, the choice between Costa and Aguero is not straightforward and even appears weighted in the Chelsea man’s favour.

Currently 2.1 cheaper than Aguero, the Spaniard has shown unerring consistency and, crucially, could allow us to retain significant funds in midfield, or even opt for a Blues pairing in defence.

But, as we’ve seen, the landscape can shift so quickly. With just a matter of days before Gameweek 19, our opinions and plans have to remain flexible.

Midfield assets like Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez, in particular, are under constant pressure to perform now that Aguero is back in the game.

Hazard’s spot-kick against Bournemouth may have kept talk of an exodus subdued for now, although two goals in six Gameweek starts is still not enough to justify his selection now that Costa has returned to the equation. We need more from Hazard against Stoke City.

As for Sanchez, he hit a post and fired in more attempts than any other player in Monday’s matches but has now produced just a single goal since his heralded hat-trick at the London Stadium back in Gameweek 14.

Arsenal still appear to be struggling at the Emirates without Santi Cazorla in the double pivot. That needs to change for the visit of Big Sam’s Crystal Palace: we perhaps need to see Sanchez back in the striker’s role. We certainly need him back in the points to stave off any talk of exit plans.

Again, such a knee-jerk reaction seems unthinkable when we look back on the scramble for the Chilean’s services only last month.

But that’s typical of this campaign and, for tonight at least, the only current certainty appears to be relentlessly providing and scoring goals for Manchester United.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Do we think Costa (STK) will score considerably more than Kane (wat)? Obviously we need to wait and see how Kane looks vs Saints but as it stands, I think they'll both probably grab a goal + 2 BAPs.

Therefore, there's not much point doing Kane -> Costa yet?

This Costa (under Conte) is different. The offense goes thru him. Not the case for Kane. Alli, Erickson and others can score without Kane involved.

I certainly agree that he is a new Costa, but Spurs away? He's still Costa! Also worth mentioning that in both his title winning season at Atletico and Chelsea he was more consistent in the first half of the season than the second half, in terms of goalscoring.

does he have to when he is delivering 7/8 pts per week in a team streaking away atm and is still 2m less than Aguero?

captaincy argument can over-complicate it. Particularly when for many there are probably more than a couple of players each week capable of producing "hauls" (e.g. Ibra, Sanchez, hazard) in sides that will have Kun as well.

It fantastic how Ibra has hit form, I had him from GW1 holding him up to the end of the Liverpool game before throwing the towel in.

The pressure to sell him after a few blanks on this site was second to none, be it from certain posters to those writing the articles.

I'm no United fan but to see everyone falling over themselves to call him essential can't help but make one laugh a little, the fickle nature of this site/game has just been given a massive judo kick to the chops by the big Swede.

Don't agree, there was a different level of attention directed towards him based on how difficult he was to fit in.

The campaign to make him a dud was huge, now everyone's forgetting their opinions around that period.

Of all the scouts, only Andy saw the potential, there were plenty of posters forcing the issue too.

But he hasn't hit form. He was never out of form. He just had a run where it wouldn't go in and is now on a run where it will. But he's playing no better and the stats are the same.

I wish people would use the phrase "recent points" when that's what they mean. Form is how a player is performing on the pitch, not how many points he has recently.

Sorry Ruth, what I meant was, according to FFS logic he was out of form around the time he had 3 or 4 blanks and the pressure to sell was cranked up by negative article after negative article.

More power to those who kept him, I held until he dropped to 11.4 from 11.9, can't help but laugh at seeing his essential status now.

But that's what his game is about jumping on players when in form and jumping off when not. Ibra deserved to get transferred out. Now he deserves to get transferred back in. Nature of the game.

            • 11 Years

No, he didn't deserve to be transferred out. I brought him in when most others were losing him (around 8 weeks ago). I did that because "FPL form" is a meaningless and useless concept as far as I am concerned.

My rule of thumb is 5 poor weeks and you're out.

Helps prevent knee jerk, stops long term malaise or rose-tinted glasses being applied.

In my squad, Kane is facing judgment this week, Siggy and Matt Phillips are up on the stand next time out 🙂

It's not about convictions of my actions, is it what it is for me, it's about how one player is forced to be essential and then forced to be useless by those with the power to influence.

      Heaton
      Alonso - Jones - Amat
      Sanchez - Hazard - Walcott - Sigurdsson
      Ibra - Benteke - Carroll

      Pickford - Capoue - Brunt - Capoue

Originally I wanted to upgrade defence and Holebas could go but now I'm thinking of bringing in Mkhitaryan which can be done for Walcott if injured or Sigurdsson.

Feel like Mkhitaryan is worth the early risk as he's a good differential with a nice fixture. Only issue is how nailed he will be as the weeks go on but I'd hope he'd be quite nailed

with more assured game time he'd be a great option.
Starts a couple of games in succession then i'd be getting him in.
Ability isn't the problem - it's fitness & injury that are.

        Playing Amat over Bruntinho?

        I'd upgrade Amat, else save.

        Give Siggy one more week

Walcott, wouldn't ditch unless he's gonna miss a significant number of those juicy fixtures

Just not as convinced by WBA away from home, although Southampton aren't big scorers. I may re-consider that as Swansea are awful

Stay calm in the boat. Southampton just having one day rest and West Brom looks solid away from home. Switch Amat to Brunt..

60pts, 4 more points to come from the bench and Cédric + Origi to play. Standard?

Fairly standard I'd say. On 72 (-4) here but no-one left to come.

Most seem to have around 55-60 with 2-4 players left. I say most....from the few I've checked 🙂

Jay Rod at 6.3 if he gets the mins.

Austin injured and Boufal off the AFCON may give him the start.

        I'm 51(-4) with 3 Spurs to play

Even though my switch from Ibra(c) to Siggy(c) backfired spectacularly, still managing to beat the average, climb a few thousand OR and outscore most mini-league rivals

        So not bad

What to do here? 1ft, 0.4itb

        Heaton, Pickford
        Alonso, Cedric, Holebas, Evans, Amat
        Sanchez, Hazard, Mane, Walcott, Fletcher
        Ibra, Benteke, Origi

Plan was Mane + Origi to Costa + Phillips at some point but will wait till after tomorrow to see if I think it's worth a hit which I doubt it will be. Any other ideas?
