Seemingly each Gameweek a different player emerges as an essential purchase after they produce  a huge Fantasy Premier League points haul.

Dele Alli, who scored his third brace in a row in Gameweek 20, is the latest to join an elite bunch of must haves, and this week alone has already attracted 300,000 new FPL owners.

But are those investing in such huge points haulers like Alli acquiring a superb source of points over the next few Gameweeks or are they just chasing tails.

I thought I’d take a look at four players who have all been subject to intense transfer activity following a stellar Gameweek score to find out if chasing points really a good strategy this season.

Philippe Coutinho – Gameweek 1

What did he do? The Liverpool schemer ran the show away to Arsenal, scoring a brace and earning maximum bonus points to return a 15 point haul.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership within a week increased from 423,848 to 1,043,541 to become one of the game’s highest owned players.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? From Gameweek’s 2 to 4 he struggled, bringing in just five points across all three matches and only playing for 15 minutes against Leicester in Gameweek 4. In Gameweek 5 his assist and two bonus points finally rewarded his half a million new owners with a seven point FPL return. Gameweek 6 was when he really hit his stride, bringing in his second of three more double digit returns.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 3

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that didn’t yield strong immediate returns but proved to be a good long term option until his injury in Gameweek 13.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Gameweek 2

What did he do? The Manchester United scored a brace at home to Southampton and maximum bonus points for the second week in a row to deliver a 13 point FPL return. With three goals in just two fixtures and Hull up next Fantasy managers had seen enough and the big Swede was declared essential.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership grew from 1,583,486 to 2,044, 184 ahead of the Hull match in Gameweek 3.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? Gameweek 3 marked a reversal in fortunes. He managed just an assist and one goal over the next four fixtures to deliver a mere 14 point total return. It was a slump that lasted until Gameweek 11, when he scored a brace, his first league goals since Gameweek 4.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 3.5

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that didn’t yield strong immediate returns and also proved to be a poor transfer for a further four fixtures.

Eden Hazard- Gameweek 11

What did he do? Against Everton at home the Chelsea midfielder was magnificent, scoring twice, assisting another goal and bringing in a maximum bonus points to take his Gameweek 11 points tally to 19.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership rocketed by 336,041 ahead of Gameweek 12.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? Over the next four fixtures he delivered just one goal and three bonus points to bring his total from Gameweek 12 to 15 to 19 points, the same amount he scored in that Everton match. His owners had to wait until Gameweek 18 before he delivered another double digit points haul.

A better value move for Marcos Alonso owners would have been to double up on Blues defenders with Cesar Azpilicueta earning 18 points over the next four fixtures, just one point less than Hazard for around 4m less.

The smarter move would have been to note Diego Costa’s consistency not act on Eden Hazard’s explosiveness. The Spaniard earned 34 points over the next four fixtures, to accrue a Gameweek average of 8.5.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 4.5

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that failed to offer an immediate return on investment.

Alexis Sanchez – Gameweek 14

What did he do? Away to West Ham and fielded as a striker the Arsenal midfielder earned one of FPL’s biggest ever Gameweek hauls of 23 points, scording a hattrick and adding maximum bonus and an assist to his tally.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership grew by 385,666 within a week taking his value from 11.4 to 11.7.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? Of our quartet he has registered the highest average Gameweek return post mega-haul, scoring 23 points over the next four league matches. But he is yet to register another double digit Gameweek score in FPL, with seven points his highest tally, in Gameweeks 16 and 20.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 5.25

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that while didn’t offer strong immediate returns did offer his new owners a consistent scoring asset. Just once since Gameweek 14 did he fail to register an assist or a goal.

Conclusion

Can Dele Alli buck the trend of essential stars failing to live up to their must have status?

In a way he already has, but only for those who were shrewd enough to invest in him before he faced Chelsea.

His ownership increased by 100,254 between Gameweek 19, when he scored his second Christmas brace away to Watford, and Gameweek 20, when his third brace of the festive fixtures arrived.

Those that labelled him essential then have already been rewarded with a 15 point return, more than both Ibrahimovic and Coutinho managed in the next four games following their must have declaration.

But for those anticipating strong returns from now on history suggests they could be disappointed. It is also worth pointing out that his six goal run has come from just six shots on target, a scoring rate that some in the community have suggested is unsustainable.

With West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and Sunderland away in the next four, Alli certainly has the fixtures to prevail but perhaps those investing now may be too late given the experiences of the above quartet of previous must haves.

Finally, the example of Hazard and Costa is worth noting. Could Christian Eriksen be a better target than Alli perhaps? The more consistent Dane has six double digit hauls this season, two more than his English team mate.

Feel free to leave your views below? Has chasing tails worked for you? If so who are the best players to get in?

Be great to hear from those who have been brave enough to shun many of the above bangwagons. I myself have been guilty of drafting in Hazard, Sanchez and Ibrahimovic after their essential status was decreed. On reflection I'll be a bit more cautious. Of the above Sanchez has been my only success story and even he has hardly been explosive of late.

I shunned Coutinho for many weeks as I had Firmino. By the time I got him, he went and got himself injured the next GW

This is my biggest FF Achilles heel - and it never never never works. There are always points elsewhere and tails to chase if you want to make the case - I would rather be more analytical and make rational decisions based on evidence than chase lost points.

Sold Ibra for Kane in GW16 as Kane was rising and I want him in for HUL and BUR fast forward 2 gameweeks and im reversing the transfer 34 points and 0.3 in TV down.

Hazard— Had him from the start, sold him Gameweek 6, bought him again after his 19 points.

Ibrahimovic— Had him from the start, sold him Gameweek 6, bought him again in Gameweek 18.

Sánchez— Bought him Gameweek 4, kept him ever since.

Gündogan— Bought him Gameweek 11, sold him Gameweek 14.

My main two bandwagons were Hazard and Gündogan, neither have payed off very well

I'm now planning to stick with my big hitters (Hazard, Sánchez, Ibrahimovic and Costa), there have been numerous occasions this season where a player is transferred out by many, before proceeding to score points. Hopefully my patience will pay off.

Would a better comparison be who else we could have transferred in instead, and what signals we missed amongst the bandwagon hype. Your example of Alonso or Costa vs Hazard was great -- wonder what other alternatives there were to Ibra/Sanchez at the time (and now with Alli - maybe Eriksen is the better pick?)

Yes would be great to hear from people who shunned the above and went for another. The article is mainly to get discussion going.

If anyone has any examples like Costa instead of Hazard that would be great. I suggest at the end that Eriksen over Alli may be another example like that.

Perhaps - Lallana/firmino over Coutinho is another, Mata over Ibrahimovic. Giroud/Iwobi over Sanchez.

Cout-Drafted in GW 9 ahead of what I felt were good fixtures. 2 goals and 3 assists before the injury. (Unlucky)

Ibra-Started in GW 1.Dropped in GW 8. Back in GW 15 for good fixtures. (Good call)

Haz-Drafted GW 11 for 19 pt haul and stuck. (Jury still out)

Sanchez- Drafted GW 17 and largely disappointed. Only due to Walcott injury. Walcott was covering him just fine besides the 23 pt mega haul. (Bad call, should have drafted much earlier)

I've also gone for far too many short term bandwagons, capoue, bony, anichebe. I'll be scrapping that strategy going forward.

Great article, glad to know it's not just me. I really think I jinx Bandwagons....as soon as I get on, the engine just seems to stops.

I prefer getting ahead of the curve but some players you just can't afford to ignore when in form.

      Great post!

I still don't beleve in form players. I always starting with fixture list so I kept away from all the big hitters and went my own way.

I dont know if it's the right way to go but I was lucky with my tactics since my differential transfers went extremely well.

Averaged over 11 points on all my Transfers In up to gw 14.
      Lukaku/Payet 28pts gw4, Walcott/Austin 26pts gw8, Sanchez/Allen 23pts, gw10 and all of them without taking a hit.

Now I'm in a great position for the run-in.. 😉

Nicely played! I really like to see transfers and even hits for transfers pay off. You've only taken 3 hits so still very conservative, but clearly you're a good judge of form and fixture. Keep it going!

Alli, Aguero and Baines made a massive difference to my pre-WC team. I'm also nicely set with a couple of Bournemouth assets vs Hull and West Brom's nice run.

It wasn't essential, but I didn't want to have to take another -8. I also though Ibra would blank vs West Ham (with 11 players, he may have!).

Certainly fair to say I've been on some of these wagons - but the one that got away was Costa. Ditched him after Arsenal and 4 yellows and he has hurt me ever since.

There is one important thing though - the bandwagons have helped to get me a TV of 106.2 which I think will be invaluable later. It's allowed me to get pretty close to the side I want bar a few minor tweaks at the back, and at 65k and 3rd in ML I'm fairly happy with my lot:

      Heaton - Jakupovic
      Alonso - Walker - McAulay - Ake - Amat
      Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Lallana - Phillips
      Costa - Ibrahimovic - Anichebe

The probability of Alli scoring twice again next game week is likely even higher than last.

7 goals, 4 games. What are you going to do, bury your head in the sand and hope regression lies below. regression to what - the old mean? This is a new mean he's creating right now. If you don't own you'd be wise to bring in and at least be sure you'll stop the rot

Took a 16 point hit 2 gameweeks back to ditch Alonso, Anichebe, Eriksen and a couple of others and bring in Aguero, Baines, Lukaku and Alli. 97 points this week. My.moment in the sun!

I think this shows that there are better reaasons for transferring in a player rather than price chasing. Costa for example proved to be better than Hazard, Giroud surprisingly better than Sanchez, other Liverpool mids better than Coutinho and Man U best avoided altogether after GWK 2.

Certainly made me think twice about chasing bandwagons.

Early season I don't have a problem with - as getting a good start with TV often (not always) puts you in a better position come January. So the Coutinho/Zlatan early GW rises were worth jumping on, if only for that. But my transfer policy changes after the new year. I'd be all over Alli now if it was GW3, but as we're over halfway through I don't have the desire to make an early change. I still might bring him in but now it'll be for other reasons than an impending price rise.

        1. ABizzle
          • 14 Years

He has decent fixtures, whereas some previous bandwagons have middling ones (Hazard particularly) - so it might be worth a short term punt. And you get the price rise too as a bonus

      3. ABizzle
        • 14 Years

Though it might be worth it in the first half of the season to catch the price rises and lock in TV. I know this has been my tactic for the past few seasons, and I always have a much stronger 2nd half to the season than the first. Could this be because I understand the players better, or because I have more purchasing power - or both?

I jumped on the Hazard bandwagon which was disappointing. Does help with TV but with Alli I have had Eriksen for 8 game weeks now so no point changing. Surprising thing was three of Dele's goals were headers.

but the frenetic price changes had to be a factor a bit earlier this season.
You've got teams that have seen their TV rise by as much as 1m in a single GW (non-wildcards).

Yet there are those in my mini league in the top 100,000 with a transfer value of between 99 and 101.

Its not the price, its the player.

True. But in my mini-league 1st and 3rd have T.V. 5m-ish lower and I'm counting on that being helpful in latter stages. Its the difference between Pedro and Haz, Özil and Sanch etc.

A lot of people see a player have an amazing week or two then think I must have him and most of the time it doesn't work out. In my opinion stick with your players, you chose them for a reason they will repay you in the long run for example I've had Eriksen for 4 weeks now I won't be getting rid for alli

I think you have to chase tails to some extent to keep up with the pack
I normally got 5 "big" attacking players in my team (8m+) and tend to use 4 of them in line with templates/big-scorers/price-risers, while the 5th is my differential enabler to make way up the rankings.

Great article Jonty. What makes this even more interesting is when you consider when these players DID begin scoring again - in most cases, it was after the Next Big Thing had emerged, and many people had abandoned them.

Coutinho - Huge early adoption, but his price had already started to fall before the Hull game kickstarted his season.

Zlatan - The same - most people had probably moved to Kane, with Ibra languishing at 11.1 before his form kicked in.

Hazard/Sanchez - Their big scores have dovetailed to the point that anyone moving between them has almost certainly been burnt. Haz started big, then Sanchez kicked in. Anyone who switched Sanchez to Hazard after the Everton 19 pointer almost certainly missed the West Ham hattrick about two weeks later.

There are two possible lessons it seems - one, there's value in just picking some big guns and standing by them, and not chasing points. But secondly, there could be even more value in completely going against the grain.

I think both your lessons are valid.

Its taken me 20 weeks to come to this realisation. 20 weeks too late admittedly to rescue my season but I feel liberated knowing that I can shun bandwagons without fear now.

Alli's goal conversion is quite high at the moment but for the season it's not too huge (less than 20%).

Very similar to Ibra in that respect - started scoring and had high conversion but not for the season.

Alli certainly isn't going to keep up this knack of scoring braces every week but I still think he's a good option for that price and with the upcoming fixtures.

Alli conversion has to be unsustainable. 7 goals from 8 on target last 4. I sold Hazard for him who has 3 shots on target in same period. One I assume was the penalty. 20th for midfielders in that period. Give me regression on someone hitting the target

Get Alli for his 6-8 pointers every other week. Not for his 15 pointers every week. He is only 8.3m or whatever.

Question is do you stick with Hazard for his next 2 or jump on Alli/Eriksen now while on form and decent fixtures of their own ?

Why did Alli's bandwagon start only after he scored 7 goals in 4 games? For the other players, it started after they scored a brace or 3 in 2.

If you jumped on the Alli bandwagon after the Southampton game, after he scored 3 goals in 2 and should have had an assist if Kane didn't miss a pen, then you'd have been heftily rewarded with 29 points in the next 2 games.

Interesting point. I think it's largely due to the congestion (less time for a bandwagon to grow), but also because bandwagons pick up most when a player has a seemingly easy fixture next; which, rightly or wrongly, the Watford game wasn't even seen as.

Disagree. Was hopeful for Eriksen and Kane for Watford. Couldn't believe people jumped off Kane before the game was played. He had 2 goals last game but for a possibly manipulated penalty spot

For me it was just a question of cost. At the plus £8M mark it wasn't an easy shift without dropping a heavy hitter.

You would say I was chasing tails when I got in Azpi some 10 GWs ago. You might not term those points as hauls but they have been enough to keep me and many others competitive not to talk of the price rise. Sometime you need to consider previous performances to decide your next transfer. It's the outcome of that move that determines if you chased tail or made a smart move

I don't think Hazard has derailed (well, he clearly has already one derailment in GW5 but has had a subsequent bandwagon after that) - I think that it may come in 2 weeks. Nor do I expect Alli to - I think he'll tick along ok with points. However I do expect that a new shiny Walcott/Coutinho or the like will start to test his owners soon.

Had KDB derailed? Hazard 38pts since the 19pts. Eriksen and Alli over 70pts since then

True - but I would say a derailment requires a plummeting price - which hasn't happened to Hazard yet this time around. I stress the word yet, though.

I've finally submitted to Costa (again). He just seems to be the solid (consistent) option this season.

Sanchez, Hazard and ultimately Aguero are explosive...but no ROI of chasing tails.

I quite like the idea of holding steady returns with the likes of Snodgrass and Phillips (although just dropped Snoddy for Alli so a total hypocrite)

Chasing points is when a player is doing well but you don't want to bring them in

Following form is when you want to bring a player in and they're doing well

I could understand the term "chasing points" if it was a one week explosion from a player, but when its 3-4 gw's of good points that surely is follwing form ?

But the evidence suggests it is better to get a player after 1 big scoring week, then after four. Surely, no player can keep form forever. Most players seem to produce their big hauls in bursts of 3-4 weeks. Getting them after 4 good game weeks is already nearing the end of their good form. Examples: Capoue, Allen, Antonio, Hazard. Of course, there are exceptions such as Ibra, Costa, and interestingly - Zaha.

I like the concept here but I am struggling to figure out either the methodology or the question behind it. Are these four chosen for a particular reason?

The discussion is reading like a giant caution flag on the race track or a string of bad beats in poker, but I have yet to figure out the justification.

Yes it seems like it has been written in order to justify a poor ranking - I think this article could be written every year for certain high priced players, but this year has been the year when the majority of players on this forum have been burned by jumping on premium bandwagons.

These are some of the biggest bandwagons following a haul....that have been mentioned in articles and posts here and reflected by huge transfers in.

I looked back and picked these out as they are big name players as well. I'm a journalist so picking out famous players will obviously generate more interest.

But feasibly you could also do a list that also includes Allen. Gundogan etc.

The point, which many others have picked up on, is that a player's big haul is arguably not the best reason to draft a player in. Yet as shown by transfer activity it remains the mot popular reason.

I hope it makes people think more before transferring a player in and consider issues like underlying stats, fixtures etc.

      1. tm245
        • 14 Years

Makes sense. However, all of these instances also represent decisions to make: could we have done better? One thing I've always liked on fantasy MLB sites is when the writers approach this bandwagon concept by looking at the comparable players in that range as well and explain why they are or are not getting a player in. They do it before the fact, but some retrospective analysis could be interesting here.

        Something like a
"In GW1, the masses were chasing Coutinho at 8.5m (?), but as it turns out for the next four weeks, Player X at 8.5m scored more points than him."

Then you could take a look at what Player X had going for him that the masses missed-- was it fixtures, stats, the eye test, etc.? Ibra over Kane four weeks ago is an example, as has been mentioned before.

As we both know I am familiar with how much time that kind of work takes, but just a suggestion for giving some more dimension to it -- since all of these choices have a butterfly effect, I think looking at the comps and how they did would be instructive as well.

SmartyPants has a nice feature in which he lists in a table who the most popular transfer in and out were -- that could be another source for comparing some of these decisions.

It's a very interesting topic. Apart from Costa, this year has seen no big hitter scoring particularly constantly. As such it seems best to stick with a Sanchez/Hazard for the whole season and swicth the 8-9m players around.

For example, it may well prove better to bring in Pogba now than Alli as Pogba has the potential to score 2+ in a few games in a row if he hits some form with his finishing.

Right, and I think the discussion is underestimating how awesome Alli has been. 44 points in three GWs is unsustainable for anyone, because it is a seasonmaking streak. All I want from having bought him on Monday below his original price is some continued goal threat and for his incredible eye for goal to be sustained. The points will take care of themselves.

I want today's threat and tomorrow's price changes, not yesterday's points.
