Pep Guardiola’s first taste of FA Cup action is as sweet as it comes as his Manchester City side demolishes West Ham in Friday night’s third round match.

The now-annual test of how seriously the FA Cup is taken by the elite clubs began with West Ham and Man City fielding strong sides – and the hosts ending up wondering why they bothered.

The 5-0 scoreline in no way flattered Pep Guardiola’s side, who dominated possession but were also particularly dangerous on the break.

David Silva (8.7), Yaya Toure (7.3) and Raheem Sterling (7.7) all caught the eye for the visitors, while Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) was again used as a holding midfielder as Fernandinho (5.3) began his latest (four match) suspension and the injured Fernando (4.7) didn’t even travel.

The Argentinian defender raided forward frequently and earned the penalty that opened the scoring, with Toure given spot-kick duties ahead of Sergio Aguero (12.8).

Should Zabaleta be handed a run of starts in the role, he could be the one City defender that offers the potential for points beyond the occasional clean sheet, although the upcoming fixtures that Fernandinho will miss – Everton away, Spurs at home and then another trip to West Ham – aren’t the easiest.

More significantly, Aguero’s stock appeared to suffer another significant knock as he relinquished spot-kick duties to Toure.

The striker has 11 Premier League goals this season, with three arriving from the spot. Four of 24 goals came from penalties last season and five from 26 before that. Based on those statistics, Aguero could, therefore, suffer a 15-20% reduction in his potential goal output should Toure remain in the box seat.

Guardiola had previously removed himself from the decision on the penalty taking pecking order, indicating that the change in duties will be decided by the players themselves.

Notably, Toure has now scored all 14 of his competitive spot-kicks for club and country. The Ivorian scored no less than six goals from penalties in his outstanding 2013/14 campaign and his stock as a midfield option for this season is duly boosted by this latest development.

Aguero did at least notch for the second match running when he flicked home Toure’s shot just after the break.

By then, the match was done and dusted.

After Sofiane Feghouli (5.0) missed a sitter at 0-1, City promptly went up the other end and doubled their lead through a Havard Nordtveit (4.7) own goal, the Norwegian failing to keep out Sterling’s attempt to bundle the ball home from a superb Bacary Sagna (5.3) cross.

A third followed almost immediately when Silva tapped in Sterling’s pass following another fast and fluent break.

John Stones (4.7), recalled to the side in place of Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8), rounded off the scoring in the second half with a header – his first goal for the club – from substitute Nolito’s (8.5) corner.

The rout was all the more chastening for West Ham because Slaven Bilic selected such a strong line-up.

Of the regular starters available, only Dmitri Payet (9.1) and Mark Noble (6.2) were afforded a rest, although both were introduced at 0-4 by an increasingly rain-soaked Bilic.

The Hammers have a good run of fixtures ahead, even if they won’t fancy that Gameweek 23 re-match with City much, but they’re wildly inconsistent and are currently in one of their phases of looking lost as a side.

The only downside for City was another relatively anonymous performance from Kevin De Bruyne (10.6). The Belgian hasn’t scored in the league for 15 matches and frequently dropped deep in City’s fluid midfield set-up at the London Stadium.

West Ham XI: Adrian, Nordtveit, Reid, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Fernandes, Obiang, Feghouli, Lanzini (Noble 58), Antonio (Fletcher 72), Carroll (Payet 58).
Subs not used: Randolph, Calleri, Oxford, Quina.

Man City XI: Caballero, Sagna, Stones, Otamendi, Clichy, Touré (Delph 78), Zabaleta, De Bruyne (Garcia 68), Silva (Nolito 58), Sterling, Agüero.
Subs not used: Bravo, Kolarov, Navas, Iheanacho.

      Possibly:
      https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4097224/amp/Chelsea-transfer-news-Antonio-Conte-considers-recalling-Nathan-Ake-Bournemouth.html?client=ms-android-samsung

      ...though it says "Conte is considering wingback options"

      If he plays Ake at wingback for Chelsea (replacing Moses or Alonso)...he'd be the bargain of all bargains!!

        bargain of the century if he nails down a spot, unlikely tho.

          Given Alonso isn't great defensively and can't finish for toffee, and Ake's been great in defence for BOU and has 3 goals in 8 appearances...are you so sure?

          Same argument with Moses.

          Not sure which side he'd play...is he left or right footed?

            Left footed. But I doubt Conte will drop Alonso straight away. If anything rotation with Alonso could be possible.

            Alonso is a far superior player to Ake. Ha'way man. Ake couldn't even get into Bournemouth team until recently.

        Definitely on the bench if he returns. Doubt he will return considering Kenedy also came back and would be vying for Alonso spot as well.

      Have Rondon and Siggy, 1 FT. Mainly want to get rid of Siggy though. Would you do:

      a) Siggy -> Walcott (assuming he is fit) or any other mid up to 7.7

      b) Siggy + Rondon -> Philips + Giroud (-4)

      c) Siggy + Rondon + Holebas -> Stanislas + Lukaku + Ake (-8)

      d) Alonso + Holebas + Siggy -> Rose + Ake + Coutinho (-8)

        On a WC and playing in a draft league, would you prefer

        A) Lloris, Boruc, Ozil, Stanislas + 0.3 ITB
        or
        B) Grant, Valdes, Walcott, Coutinho + 0.2 ITB

        If I go for B and Cout & Walcott aren't fit for the next GW my first 2 subs would be Brunt & Philips

                    I'd be concerned that you have two really weak mids. Would be tempted to go Mane and Zaha to Alli and Phillips if that gives you money to get in Stanislas for one of De Roon or Capoue. Unless you already have cash ITB

                Heaton, (Pickford)
                Cedric, Alonso, Walker, (Holebas, Amat)
                Sanchez, Lallana, Eriksen, Phillips, (De Roon)
                Aguero, Ibra, Defoe

                1FT, good to go? Thinking of seeing ho Aguero does and swapping to Costa if not performing. Then upgrade either Lallana to Alli if he is still killing it (eventually one of the Spurs lads to Coutinho maybe) or use cash to improve defence

                  He was good.

                  What's happening here is one group of owners can't accept the possibility that there is better value elsewhere this season and will absolutely refuse to acknowledge that owning him could be a waste of funds. Another group of non owners can't accept the possibility that Aguero could show his value at any time and are resolutely trying to convince themselves that not going with him is 100% the right decision without even the faintest of acknowledgements that it could go wrong.

                  I'm just sitting in my undies.

                  Even without pens, Kun is capable for getting forward from that deeper position and getting the odd goal.

                  Yaya or Sterling looking better picks.

                    What keeps Aguero in my team is the 3 or more goals he is capable of delivering in ANY one game. Add that to a captaincy and you will either rocket up or plummet down the rankings. I hate watching from behind the sofa 🙂

                  Don't think wc is necessary now. Save it for the dgw. Need to look to get Zaha out. Probably for Stanislas or Phillips?

                A challenge!

                Name 5 defenders who as cheap as possible (definitely no more than £4.5m) and who are decent / getting minutes.

                Here's mine:

                1) Ake (£4.4m)

                2) Janmaat (£4.5m, back next week)

                3) Chambers (£4.4m)

                4) Muniesa (£4.1m, looks like he will get games if Stoke continue to play 3-5-2)

                5) Yoshida (£4.2m, played quite a bit recently and could continue to do so with Fonte handing in a transfer request)

                Total: £21.6m

                  Maguire for Hull looked good in their recent games too. Dawson's also cheap.

                Be cool if Boro managed to nab Bojan

                Karanka said: “I like to bring players who can play in different positions, so we will try.

                "At the moment it is one signing, but if someone leaves it could depend.

                “I know Bojan, because he was in the national team. He is a good player, he has played in AC Milan, Barcelona, Ajax, Rome, Stoke … so he is a good player.”

                  No longer essential...clean sheets will begin to dry up.

                  There was a post listing cheap 4.5m and lower defenders a bit earlier, you can get a nice defence on the cheap.

                  Ake, Chambers, Pieters, Lowton/Mee, Nyom, a few others.

                  Better to pile money in midfield...most value there

                I have £1.4 in the bank, and want to fund it around my defence :
                Grant (SP £4.2)
                Pickford (SP £4.1)
                Smith (SP £4.6)
                Holebas (SP £4.6)
                Jones(SP £4.8)
                Lovren (SP £5.0)
                Gibson (SP £4.7)
                What do you think???
                Thanks for advice..

                  Lovren to Baines I'd definitely do

                  Holebas to Brunt

                  You need to replace Pickford. Heaton if the budget will stretch, else Valdes

                  I'd get Daniels or Ake in there as your BOU defender rather than Smith

                    What do you think about
                    Smith +Pickford > Ake+Mignolet

                      Liverpools upcoming fixtures turning nasty...I'd get out of pool defence personally

                        Liverpool face the top teams in an odd GW (21 to 29), and in that period only in GW29 grant face the top team too..
                        Please think again and convince me.. 🙂

                        *sorry for bad english

                  Can only advise what I did with my team:

                  Lovren->Cahill (+£1.4)
                  Holebas->Friend (-£0.2)
                  Gibson->McAuley (+£0.2)

                  Not checked the values

                Continue to watch the bet failings of a degenerate gambler. At the moment we are still alive for our win $1600, 5-team parlay/accumulator bet after a solid Victory for the Melbourne...umm...Victory. Any feedback is appreciated, these are awful but I'm trying to improve them and hopefully win some more money along the way.
