Shock defeats, unwanted replays, injuries and landmark goals – Saturday’s serving of FA Cup third round ties proves to be mainly feast, with a dash or two of famine.

Rojo Crocked in United stroll

Wayne Rooney (8.6) equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United goal scoring record with the opener in a routine 4-0 win over their Championship opponents Reading.

The England striker steered home Juan Mata’s (7.2) cross in the opening ten minutes of a match United dominated throughout.

Anthony Martial (9.3) doubled the lead from a Rooney assist before Marcus Rashford (6.4), who was a constant threat, scored twice in the second half.

Jose Mourinho made nine changes from the team that won at West Ham, leaving some of his biggest guns on the bench, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Marcos Rojo (5.2) was one of two players retained but lasted just 20 minutes of the tie, sustaining a muscle injury the coach discussed post-match.

“I don’t know (what the damage is). We have to wait a little bit. A muscle is a muscle and you’re always afraid of it but let’s see what is going on…It would be so important for us to keep our central defenders fit for the month of January. But I prefer to wait. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones did a very good job for us.”

United’s last three league clean sheets have come with Rojo and Jones (4.9) at the heart of the defence. With Eric Bailly (5.3) at the Africa Cup of Nations and a strong set of fixtures to come after the Gameweek 21 visit by Liverpool, losing Rojo would be a major blow.

While it would seemingly cement Jones’ starting role, it would also cast doubt on the resilience of United’s defence which had looked a settled unit.

Manchester United XI: Romero, Young, Smalling, Rojo (Jones 19), Blind, Carrick (Fosu-Mensah 78), Fellaini, Mata (Schweinsteiger 78), Rooney, Martial, Rashford.
Subs not used: Pereira, Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Ibrahimovic.

Musa stakes his claim

Substitute Ahmed Musa (6.9) fired Leicester City into the fourth round – and did his own starting prospects no harm – in a comeback win over Everton at Goodison Park.

With Jamie Vardy (9.6) unwell and not travelling, Islam Slimani (8.3) away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Leonardo Ulloa (5.5) injured in the match, Musa timed his brace of goals perfectly.

New signing Wilfred Ndidi made his debut after his £15 million move from Genk, while Danny Drinkwater (5.3) returned following a knee injury.

For Everton, Romelu Lukaku (9.5 and 24.3%-owned) maintained his recent scoring form, converting the simplest of tap-ins after some wing wizardry from Gerard Deulofeu (5.9), before Musa turned the tie around.

Post-match, Claudio Ranieri brought us this on Ulloa’s knock and Vardy’s absence…

“I don’t know now about Ulloa. Maybe we have to wait 24 or 48 hours to understand it better. It was his thigh (quad muscle). I also expected Vardy to play, he and Andy King had the fever yesterday. They weren’t ready to travel with us but I hope they will be ready for the next match against Chelsea.”

Everton XI: Robles, Funes Mori, Williams, Holgate (Deulofeu 45), Coleman, Davies, Barry, Barkley (Koné 75), Baines, Lukaku, Valencia (Mirallas 62).
Subs not used: Jagielka, Cleverley, Oviedo, Hewelt.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Huth, Morgan, Chilwell, Mendy, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Gray (Fuchs 77), Ulloa (Musa 35), Albrighton (Kapustka 84).
Subs not used: Hernández, James, Okazaki, Zieler.

Dawson concern for Tigers

Hull City boss Marco Silva had a debut match in charge to remember and rue in equal measure.

The victory over Swansea City was the first time since November and also earned them a first clean sheet in 23 matches in all competitions. However, it may have come at a cost having lost skipper Michael Dawson (4.4) to a shoulder injury.

The Tigers’ defence was already painfully makeshift, with Harry Maguire (4.4) and Curtis Davies (4.9) missing through injury and right-back Ahmed Elmohamady (4.7) on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Losing Dawson would be a major blow ahead of Tuesday night’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg at Manchester United and a daunting set of league fixtures that includes Chelsea, United (again), Liverpool and Arsenal over the next five Gameweeks.

Hull finished the tie with three midfielders among the back four, but at least Abel Hernandez (5.9) scored on his return from injury to sweeten the pill, with Josh Tymon (4.0) adding a second in injury time.

Hernandez managed his first minutes since Gameweek 11 and, should he cement a starting role, could now regain penalty duties from Hull’s stand-out player of the season, Robert Snodgrass (5.8).

Elsewhere, Eldin Jakupovic earned a start in goal for the Tigers and impressed with a trio of fine saves as Silva elected to bench David Marshall. It’s possible that the battle for the Hull City number one spot has been reset under the new manager, then, which could see Jakupovic back in the reckoning. He’s still owned by 19% of FPL managers but is now priced at just 3.9.

Silva adopted a wait-and-see approach regarding Dawson post-match.

“We will see, we need to speak to the doctors about it. I hope it is possible that Michael can play in the next game, but we will talk to the doctors first.”

Swansea City manager Paul Clement, also taking charge for the first time, had Neil Taylor (4.2) unavailable with a rib injury and dropped Fernando Llorente (6.2) to the bench as his side matched their opponents for shots on target and possession but failed to build on Tuesday’s win at Crystal Palace.

Hull City XI: Jakupovic, Meyler, Livermore, Dawson (Maloney 70), Robertson, Henriksen (Hernández 63), Huddlestone, Mason, Clucas, Snodgrass, Diomande (Tymon 89).
Subs not used: Weir, Marshall, Bowen, Clackstone.

Swansea City X: Nordfeldt, Naughton, van der Hoorn, Fernandez, Kingsley (Rangel 67), Fer, Cork, Ki Sung-yueng, Dyer (Routledge 63), Bastón (Llorente 62), Sigurdsson.
Subs not used: Fabianski, Amat, Britton, Fulton.

Saints suffer fixture pile-up

Goals from Virgil van Dijk (5.8) and Maya Yoshida (4.2) failed to put away a spirited Norwich city, leaving an over-burdened Southampton with yet another fixture to fulfil.

Saints coach Claude Puel made eight changes to the side who lost 3-0 to Everton, no doubt with Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool in his mind.

But he’ll now have to factor in a January 18 replay which means Southampton will have to play five matches in 17 days, starting with a Gameweek 21 trip to Burnley.

With experienced centre-half Jose Fonte (5.4) handing in a transfer request, Puel’s defensive resources could be stretched to the limit just when a favourable run of matches – the Burnley clash followed by Leicester and West Ham at home and trips to Swansea and Sunderland – kicks in.

The Saints boss refused to confirm that Fonte was omitted in Saturday’s tie due to the speculation surrounding his future, but revealed that he is yet to decide whether the centre-back will face Liverpool in midweek.

Southampton XI: Lewis, Stephens, Yoshida, van Dijk, Bertrand, Reed (Romeu 63), Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Sims (Redmond 78), Long (Rodriguez 63), Tadic.
Subs not used: Clasie, Davis, Taylor, McQueen.

Ake Set for Chelsea Return

Elsewhere, three Premier League teams fell to lower league opposition, with Stoke City and West Brom fielding strong teams and still coming unstuck, to Wolves and Derby respectively, although the 17.3%-owned Baggies’ midfielder Matt Phillips (5.7) continued his fine form with his second goal in three matches in all competitions.

The winger is second only to Tottenham Hotspurs’ Dele Alli for transfer traffic ahead of Gameweek 21, having returned four goals and seven assists in his last ten league outings.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, made 11 changes to their starting line-up, produced zero shots on target and were well beaten by Millwall, with defender Marc Wilson (3.9) limping off late on.

Marc Pugh (4.7) and Lewis Cook (5.1) returned from injuries for the Cherries, but the main story in their camp involved defender Nathan Ake (4.4 and 9.9%-owned) with manager Eddie Howe confirming that he could now be recalled by Chelsea from his loan spell.

“It looks like that will be the case, it’s not 100% finalised yet.”

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had previously offered a glowing review of Ake’s form, although it’s uncertain just how he would fit into the picture at Stamford Bridge; a starting role would certainly seem unlikely.

This would come as a major setback for Ake’s owners, with the loanee currently found in more than Fantasy Premier League 370,000 squads, earning over 60,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 21 so far.

Meanwhile, Sunderland and Burnley played out a goalless draw and must meet again on January 17.

For the Black Cats, the replay will be sandwiched between a home match with Stoke City and a trip to West Brom – fixtures David Moyes will see as vital in Sunderland’s bid to stave off relegation.

The Clarets host Southampton and travel to Arsenal either side of the cup tie. Two of their players – Scott Arfield (5.2) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (5.0) – went off injured in the stalemate at the Stadium of Light with hamstring issues.

Watford beat Burton Albion 2-0 to record their first win since Gameweek 15, but it came at a cost.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes (4.9) and left-back Jose Holebas (4.8) were absent through illness while Craig Cathcart (4.3) was forced off after 16 minutes with a head injury.

Arsenal came from behind to beat Preston 2-1, Olivier Giroud (8.6) scoring for the fourth consecutive match with a late winner in a tie which also marked the return from a long-term injury of striker Danny Welbeck (7.3).

He saw just seven minutes of action from the bench as both Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott missed out again for the Gunners.

Hector Bellerin was also an absentee, with Arsene Wenger stating that the Spaniard had suffered an injury in training, with little or no details available on the severity.

Finally, Crystal Palace were held to a goalless at Bolton and will replay at Selhurst Park on January 17, bookended by league fixtures with West Ham away and Everton at home.

Sam Allardyce was able to give Loic Remy (6.3) a first start for Palace with the Frenchman handed a 45-minute appearance following long-term injury.

Post-match, Remy, who struck a post in the tie, revealed that his pitch time is being managed to suggest that he could be a factor in the Gameweek 21 trip to West Ham…

“It was already planned that I was going to play 45 minutes that will build me up for the next game and hopefully I will be able to get more minutes in that match.”

Southampton defence does not look as appealing if Fonte is on his way.

would you swap cedric for jones ? (if cedric is fit)

      both very good fixtures

Yes. I think the PL is split into:

        - The top 6
        - The next 3 (Southampton, Everton, WBA)
        - The bottom 3 (Hull, Swansea, Sunderland)
        - The rest

Ideally you want as many players from the first group as possible (so Jones fits in there). Then the second group. Then the standout players from the other two groups (e.g. Heaton, Defoe, Siggy, Snodgrass),

I got the same view. Totally agree. Now Jones looks like good prospect and nailed due to lack of competition.

I swapped Cedric for Chambers. Slightly impulsive because I was annoyed he hadn't done better but Saints have a lot of fixtures coming up and form isn't great, when I got Cedric I imagined he would supply Austin with a load of assists... which is obviously not going to happen! I feel Chambers offers better value and I can strengthen my squad in attack. Also have Baines and Alonso as my starting defenders.

it is too early and risky to tell, however Ake is better than Cahill, or Azpi moves to fullback to replace Moses, so all is not lost for Ake owners.

    Grant (Jak)
    Daniels Baines Brunt (Love, Holgate)
    Erikson Sanchez Alli Pogba Phillips
    Aguero Ibra (Barnes)

WC team, probably won't go with thisin the end because the bench is as bad as can be, but it is tempting. Anyone else look at risky moves like this?

I like it, not sure I would have a Spurs double up and no Chelsea players. I can understand why you don't have Alonso at the back because of the value offered by the three you have but I feel he will have his moment; decent chance of a clean sheet and attacking returns. Personally I'm on the fence over Aguero, especially as it looks like he is no longer the penalty taker. I think Lukaku could be a good choice, a good run of fixtures after City, the main man at Everton, I think he offers better value. Costa also cheaper than Aguero. Could the money saved improve your squad?

Although I don't want to persuade you out of Aguero and then he explodes!... I feel there's a risk not having him and City have to improve right? If only Sterling could finish he would be the ideal player to minimise the possible damage...

I agree Hazard has frustrated this season, and last! It could be a good decision to get rid of him, I'm willing to hold for a little longer. We will know in a few weeks who's right.

    Eddie howe on Ake situation
Doesnt sound too optimistic at all

    “I am not sure
there are too many out there, hence why Chelsea would
    recall him.

"With Simon Francis's suspension and Marc Pugh's
injury and now Nathan going back, our defensive
    resources are certainly stretched."

The Bournemouth manager added: "It would be a huge
blow to us as he's done so well.

"It is easier said than done to say we are going to go
and recruit a player of a similar stature to Nathan."

Someone in previous post made a good point RE Spurs defender of choice - Rose already has 8 yellows so 2 game ban looks likely.

Who would be your preferred choice?

    B. Walker (6.1)
    C. Toby (6.3)

Probably Rose. I'm looking at Toby as a differential, though. At 6.3 and a bit of a goal threat, plus spurs being more solid at the back when he's fit, means he might be a really good pick. Especially at that fallen price.

I think the PL is split into:

    - The top 6
    - The next 3 (Southampton, Everton, WBA)
    - The bottom 3 (Hull, Swansea, Sunderland)
    - The rest

Looking at the fixtures and wanting to ideally avoid the top two groups above then these are the best over the next 6 GWs:

Palace (5 good from next 6)
    Everton (5/6)
    Southampton (5/6)
    West Brom (5/6)
    Arsenal (4/6)
    Chelsea (4/6)
    Man Utd (4/6)
    Watford (4/6)

Taking into quality of the team (i.e. a Top 6 player is better than the rest), ease of fixtures and current form you would target players from (in this order):

    - Arsenal
    - WBA
    - Utd
    - Chelsea
    - Everton
    - Southampton
    - Palace

Punts make me nervous! You are right - there could be a good reward for going with Giroud, I prefer Lukaku, after City Everton have a good run and he's nailed. It's difficult to only look at the next 6; Bournemouth have a good next 3, Everton a decent longer term after City. The fixture analysis does vary. Why have you chosen the next 6 in particular? Are you thinking about potential double gameweeks on the horizon?

            Yes - double GWs.

If I look at the next 8 or 10 weeks then Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and Everton look good. Spurs and West Ham start coming into it and WBA, Palace and Southampton drop off. I think 6 GWs gives you enough time to save transfers / use transfers effectively.

The only problem is that playing teams at the bottom is advantageous too. So you should assign each a difficulty rating and sum up

I considered that - Arsenal are playing Swansea, Burnley and Hull so ended up top. I would consider Chelsea before Utd - tough to split them on fixtures and form etc.

Hi Gents, which option is best for (-4)?

    A) Cedric + Deeney to Chambers + Giroud
    B) Cedric + Deeney to Daniels + Defoe
    C) Do nothing and keep FT?

    Rest of the team is:

    Heaton - Pickford
    Alonso - Walker - Holebas - Amat
Sanchez - Ericksen - Siggy - Phillips - Re Roon
    Ibra - Costa

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who will be this year’s second half of the season stars?

New recruits, those back from injury and changes of formation and tactics could all produce a range of emerging stars for the second half of the season. But who do you think will prosper the most from Gameweek 21 to the end of the season.

I thought I’d take a look at last season to show how the best players to own from now on are not necessarily this season’s current top performers.

    2015/16 Gameweeks 1-20

Top five in terms of goals in order

    Vardy
    Lukaku
    Ighalo
    Mahrez
    Kane

Top five in terms of assists in order

    Ozil
    KDB
    Mahrez
    Barkley
    Deulofeu
    Silva….last three tied on 7.

    2015/16 Gameweeks 21 -38

Top five in terms of goals in order

    Aguero
    Kane
    Defoe
    Vardy
    Firmino

Top five in terms of assists in order

    Payet
    Tadic
    Milner
    Eriksen

    Alli
    Lamela…last two tied on six.

This showed that in contrast to the start of the season Spurs and Liverpool offered more options, as did West Ham and Southampton. Watford and Leicester players early season form was not replicated…could that mean some of this season’s form teams so far may go off the boil?

Finding the players from this season’s version of 15/16 West Ham and Southampton look key – as they offered real value for high returns.

Also do you think Sanchez will dip in form like he did last season?

At the moment I think you can't really look beyond which teams you think will come into form now, to me it looks like United are really strong even with a possible Rojo injury, Spurs too. They have big enough squads to manage the Europa league. Liverpool with Klopp in his second season and no European distraction I expect to perform well. I think all those teams have players offering value, but beyond them I fancy Everton to be this year's Southampton, Koeman and fixtures in their favour.

I guess Giroud will have a strong 2nd half. They'll play him against the weaker teams and he's in good form (and no donkey...5th all time Arsenal PL scorer, no less. In 4 years at the club..).
Pogba and Mikh should also produce and both settled now and Man U looking threatening.
I like Stanislas as the new Phillips. He's been injured but should score well if he stays fit.

Jesus (not the headless chicken, the other one) from Man City could well be a revelation. Pep will play him as other attacking options are not great and goals will bail him out of games, they just don't know how to defend,

Some decent points but it is not cities lack of defensive knowledge that is killing them but their lack of ball retention. Peps barce teams couldn't defend either but they owned the ball so had very little defending to do. I think this is where most of his frustration is coming from with kun up front, he has never been the best link man.

Will he get it right? I don't know but I'm not prepared to jump on the failure bandwagon yet.

"Essentials" from this first half of this season likely to fall away:

      Costa
      Alonso
      Hazard
      Sanchez
      Walcott
      Siggy
      Sterling
      Allen
      Capoue
      Holebas

Assets that have been quiet for the first half who might emerge or are emerging now:

      Giroud (happening now)
      Ozil
      Aguero
      KDB
      Silva
      Yaya Toure
      Alli (already happening)
      Eriksen (already happened)
      Kane (sort of already happening)
      Pogba
      Mhiki
      Baines
      Coleman
      Brunt (already happened)

Steady Eddie's, good for the whole season:

      Heaton
      Ibra
      Lallana
      Coutinho
      Mane
      Walker
      Rose
Lukaku (up and down form, but gonna feature in both halves of the season)
      Phillips
      Snodgrass

not sure I really see anything mid-table that makes me think one of those sides are suddenly going to start producing.
Maybe Payet wakes up. Possibly Gray at Burnley? Stanislas stays fit?
If anything it's the managerial changes in the bottom 4 that may spark the odd player in FPL terms.
Can Clement get Siggy or Llorente firing?
Can Silva get Snodgrass even better returns or get one of their cheap strikers scoring?
Will BFS get Campbell or Dann producing? Will he do his usual and find a bargain in the transfer window?

Great HT. Probably the most important thing to be thinking about, if only the Ake and Alonso energy could be diverted toward this question.

If Ozil is only marginally injured/getting his holiday rest, I think Wenger's comments about his increased attention to goalscoring in the fall confirm him as a second half star. Awkward price as it turns out with most managers priced into Sanchez/Hazard or the 8m stars right now though.

KDB has the class and he looked like a maestro earlier in December, though he would require squad restructuring even more than Ozil at that price.

Mata has the class and the price but just needs the playing time to take advantage of the fixtures, and I think Martial as a regular starter is quite dangerous.

If Southampton didn't have such fixture congestion (midweek Cup matches every week for the next three or four), Jay Rodriguez might be a breakout.

Wilshere, Dann, Benteke, Barkley, Yaya, Deeney, Chadli, Antonio, Cresswell.

Give the amount of clean sheets that lot have accrued I'd say Conte is unlikely to put Ake in ahead of any of them on a regular basis. Odd game and subbed on most likely.

Largely agree, though out of all the Chelsea players mentioned, Alonso is clearly the one who's least convincing and the closest thing to a "weakest link" in the Chelsea setup.

Yes, loads of people have him in FPL, but 90% of his appeal is OOP.

He gets defensive returns (quite a lot of them) without really putting in that much defensive effort...he benefits greatly from the work of the 3 CBs and Kante.

He's playing as far forward as Hazard and that gets him some attacking returns (though he would get way more if he could actually finish).

Truth being told, if he was a conventional leftback, he would be overlooked, people would be far less interested.

Truth being told, if someone like Danny Rose were playing that LWB position, they'd be making a much better job of it than Alonso does.

So, all in all, it's Alonso who's likely to be more affected than anyone by Ake coming back. More so than Cahill.

Nonsense, have you seen who is playing the other wb position and the defensive shift he puts in?

"Truth being told" he is not a conventional lb so what has that got to do with anything? Have a read of a football tactics book and see what the wbs are expected to do in a 3421 like a good lad.

Cheers! You think Alonso will keep his place for now?

i think you should keep alonso. downgrading to smith or kelly is like disabling tha defender spot
but between the 2, A gives you better players

Yeah was all set on Ake instead of Kelly, but now he is going back to Chelsea, which is also bad for Alonso. Already have Valdes so not keen on a double up on any of the 4.4 Boro boys.

you should have one of chelsea attack like hazard or costa. then it s between pedro or willian, and these 2 may get rotated in any way conte wants. could getting stanislas give you enough money to get one of haz/costa?

My front 8 is as such currently:

        Sanchez Hazard Alli Phillips DeRoon
        Ibra Kane Crouch

I'm planning to downgrade Hazard to enable me to upgrade DeRoon to Coutinho/Lallana.

        Alternatively, I can do this:

        Kane > Costa
        Hazard > Stanislas
        DeRoon > Coutinho/Lallana

With the above, I'll have Liverpool attack (Coutinho or Lallana), Chelsea attack (Costa) and Spurs attack (Alli). Just not too sure if it is a good idea taking Kane out for Costa.

        Thoughts?

if hazard continues underperforming fplwise, you could go for his downgrade. you shouldnt miss having at least one midfielder from liverpool

    Heaton Grant
    Alonso Ake Baines Friend Brunt
    Sanchez Stanislas Alli Lallana Phillips
    Ibra Rondon Costa

    1. Heaton home vs SOU or Grant away vs SUN?
    2. got Friend before last GW, didnt like him starting on the bench, came on (played well and could have got assists) late enough not to get cleansheet.. do you think he ll get starts next 3 GWs or change to another MID defender? it was between him and chambers for the price 4.4
    3. Thinking of bringing Giroud instead of Rondon, at least for GW 21. Who would you trust more regarding points output? if giroud, keep him and not bring rondon for WBA's nice fixtures?
    4. Which 4 players would you bench for GW21?

    Thank you

Costa or Haz? Haz has the explosion potential + Penalties, but Costa has consistency.

      Costa

I'm on WC and taking Haz most likely, saves a bit of money (I got Haz early) and offers a better team structure. If I had unlimited funds and didnt care about having way too much money up front I'd take Costa...

    Hazard/Diomande > Stanislas/Giroud for a hit ?

    1. MTPockets

I wouldn't get Giroud unless/until see him start with full strength choices (Walcott/Ozil etc).
