Diego Costa returns to the Chelsea starting line-up with a goal as Eden Hazard’s toils continue. Alexis Sanchez leaves it late against Burnley, and Southampton’s differential midfielders are in the goals against a lacklustre Leicester City.

On The Rise

Diego Costa
Returning to the starting line-up after recovering from a back problem, the Spain international was quick to resume his outstanding season by grabbing the opener at home to Hull City.

Among the top ten Fantasy Premier League captains for Gameweek 22, only Costa and Alexis Sanchez managed to find the net, as the former maintained the remarkable levels of consistency that have now served up points in 16 of 20 league appearances under Antonio Conte.

Sold by more than 298,000 FPL managers ahead of the weekend, Costa has dropped from 11.0 in Gameweek 17 to 10.3 as a result of those injury doubts but today’s heroics, allied with another poor showing from Eden Hazard, is likely to spark significant interest ahead of Gameweek 23.

Gary Cahill
A third goal of the season, supplemented by Chelsea’s twelfth clean sheet in 16 Gameweeks since moving to a 3-4-3 formation, saw the centre-half climb above team-mate Marcos Alonso to the top of the FPL defender standings.

Granted, Alonso’s failure to start a match until Gameweek 7 is a major factor here – with a goal, assist or clean sheet in 14 of his 16 starts, the summer signing remains top for points per match (6.5) for defenders.

However, Cahill’s eye for goal suggests that he may be a better option than Cesar Azpilicueta for those looking to double up on Conte’s resilient rearguard. The Spaniard has yet to find the net this season and has received just one bonus point in the last three matches that have featured a Blues shut-out.

Mesut Ozil
The playmaker’s improved creative output continued earlier today as he teed up Shkodran Mustafi for Arsenal’s opener against Burnley.

Having accumulated a massive 19 assists in the previous campaign, Ozil had struggled for form over the opening few months and mustered just three assists in the opening 17 Gameweeks.

Today’s output means that the German international now supplied an assist in each of his last three Premier League appearances and with Watford, Hull City and Leicester City paying visit in the next six, Ozil remains a Gunners differential with just 7.2% ownership.

Alexis Sanchez
Having fired 17 attempts on goal in his previous two home outings with Olivier Giroud leading the line, there was no real surprise to see Sanchez lead this week’s Captain Poll.

With both Giroud and Ozil subbed off towards the end, the Chilean was somewhat fortunate to benefit from penalty duties, stepping up to slot home a last-gasp winner.

Again, Sanchez offered a significant threat throughout, firing eight efforts on goal against the Clarets. He has now scored or assisted in nine of the previous ten rounds of fixtures.

Nonetheless, today’s converted spot-kick was the first time in his last four home appearances that he has found the net – food for thought, perhaps, for his 37% FPL owners ahead of visits from Watford and Hull in the next three.

Dusan Tadic
We handed the Serbian a spot in this week’s Differentials after he fired more attempts on goal than any player in the previous round of fixtures.

Tadic’s converted spot-kick – a first goal since Gameweek 6 and only his second of the season – added to an assist against West Brom over the last four rounds of fixtures.

Having started each of the last four, Tadic looks to have strengthened his spot in Claude Puel’s first XI at a time where Charlie Austin and Sofiane Boufal remain on the sidelines through injury.

With clashes against Swansea City, West Ham, Sunderland and Watford over the next five Gameweeks, the playmaker has the fixtures to at last offer some consistency.

Jay Rodriguez, James Ward-Prowse
It’s three goals in six Gameweeks now for Rodriguez after today’s first-half effort at home to Leicester.

Back in the central striker role, the FPL midfielder served a reminder of his out of position potential in the absence of Charlie Austin as Shane Long dropped back to the bench.

Yet Puel’s penchant for rotating his first XI is likely to ensure we steer clear of Rodriguez for now. With the Saints still alive in both domestic cup competitions, the former Burnley man has started back-to-back league matches (Gameweek 17-18) just once all season.

Fellow scorer Ward-Prowse, on the other hand, has now been named in the Saints’ line-up in eight of the last ten Gameweeks.

Priced at 5.0 to Rodriguez’ 6.3, Ward-Prowse has also chipped in with two assists over that period and created more scoring chances for team-mates than any Saints player, thanks to his lion’s share of dead-ball duties.

Maya Yoshida
The Japan international has now started seven straight matches in all competitions and was even handed the armband by Puel for the midweek cup win over Norwich City.

With Jose Fonte off to West Ham and Virgil van Dijk limping off early in the second period, Yoshida’s importance to the Saints’ cause seems to be growing with every Gameweek.

This afternoon’s result was the first time in seven league matches that Southampton have kept a clean sheet with Yoshida in the first XI, yet, at a price of just 4.2, he could prove value for money if the St Mary’s side can take advantage of their schedule.

Andre Gray, Ashley Barnes
In spite of a dire away record that had harvested three goals in their first nine away matches, Sean Dyche kept faith with a front two once again for the Emirates encounter.

Coming in a 6.2 in FPL, Gray’s converted penalty took his tally to five goals in as many matches for the Clarets, highlighting his value for money in a weekend where the similarly-priced Andy Carroll and Fernando Llorente bagged a brace apiece.

Barnes, meanwhile, has now started six successive league matches and has produced two goals and as many assists over that period.

At a price of 4.5, he’s now challenging the likes of Peter Crouch as the budget forward of choice as the Lancashire side prepare to face Leicester, Watford, Hull and Swansea in the next five Gameweeks.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
The Chelsea winger went into this afternoon’s match as the fifth most-captained player in the Gameweek, with 7.6% of managers handing him the armband.

Once again, he disappointed. A blank at home to Hull means that Hazard has scored just two goals and as many assists in the last 11 Gameweeks, with only one of those strikes arriving from open play.

Compare that to the form that served up seven goals and three assists in the opening 11 rounds of fixtures and it’s easy to see why he’s the second most transferred out midfielder in the Gameweek.

Hector Bellerin
Having returned from training earlier in the week, Arsene Wenger suggested that the right-back “should” be available for the visit of Burnley.

While Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny atoned for a lack of defensive returns with a goal and assist respectively, Bellerin was surprisingly consigned to bench-warming duties as Gabriel retained the right-back berth.

It’s likely that Wenger was simply showing caution with the Spaniard’s fitness after a recurrence of his ankle injury, yet at a price of 6.5, his 15.9% owners will be in two minds whether to hold, given the output of premium alternatives available at Chelsea, Spurs and now Everton.

Unless you need to take a chance with another differential to catch a leader above you, Eriksen is the best choice. Firmino or Cout if you are hoping to make up a deficit with something different.

Defoe to Benteke is an interesting differential - risky, but Palace have great fixtures. Otherwise it might just be Lowe to another cheapie defender who actually plays and/or has a match in GW26.

For Baines to be better than Coleman as an option you are relying on assistance from the referees. Otherwise he isn't.

No, of course you would assume penalties are going to occur - but given the choice between two defenders, same price, same team, one who takes penalties, one who doesn't...

You cant assume that penalties will be given - but you have to allow for them as a possibility. That's my point.

Sorry Ruth - Im really not trying to be contrary. I promise. I think Coleman and Baines are both good options. For me personally, the *possibility* of Baines getting a penalty (as distinct from any assumption that he will) tips the balance in his favour.

Not sure about that. Sure, Coleman is a bigger goal threat from open play, but Baines offers more assist potential and being on set pieces is a big advantage.

          Baines 5.3
          Coleman 4.8

              Yes. Minutes per chance created:
              Baines - 78.8m
              Coleman - 162.2m

Maybe over-reliance on stats like that is why you are having a poor season.

A defender goal is worth 2 assists, right?

Just supporting my statement that Baines offers more assist potential. Not saying Coleman is a poor pick, just saying for the same price that Baines is better.

Anything better than just Stones -> Brunt (bench Nyom) and save the other FT after the cup games have finished?

    Bank 0.4m, 2FT

    Cech
    Rose, Valencia, Nyom
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Lallana, Sterling
    Aguero, Carroll, Benteke

    Pickford, Capoue, Stones, Amat

        A) Stones & Lallana -> Baines & Tadic (0.1m short of Siggy)

Thanks. I looked at this also but am 0.1m short. Also, given I'm miles behind in my ML and nobody else has Aguero or Benteke (and both have good fixtures), I'm tempted to keep them as differentials. They all seem to have at least 2 of Costa, Lukaku, Kane, Ibra

Hi Jins. Im going ok - up to a season high 15k OR this week on the back of some repaid faith from Firmino.

Struggling to decide whether to bring in Rose or Brunt this week though (Alonso, Baines being my other playing defenders) - what do you reckon?

That's a tricky one. Both look great options. The 1m saving on Brunt may tempt me especially if Aldy is out.

Exactly how much of a "mare" is your season? (Relative to your previous seasons just about anything could be considered a 'mare 😉 ). Your current team looks pretty good.

Mate, Id swap our current ranks in a heartbeat for a Season History that had a "2" in the OR column. Forever a legend in my books 😉

They are playing better, but I'm not sure it changes things for him. It looks like they have decided to play more defensively, keep their shape tighter, and counter - great for keeping the score close, but I don't see them netting any more goals than they have been recently.

Not quite on Swans bandwagon after one game. I think they have caught one team by surprise (Pool) and others will not let heir guard down. Carroll and Olson seem to be the key to their form. Llorente and Siggy were just at the right place at the right time.

Considering WC'ding my team. I prefer to save my WC of course but if I can get good points for 2 or 3 weeks by WC'ding it will be more beneficial than using it for the DGWs.

If you were me, will you WC? if not what will you do to the current team?

    Current:
    Foster, Pick
    PVA, VVD*, Holebas*, Friend, Amat*
    Hazard, Sanchez, Alli, Phillips, Snoddy
    Aguero, Ibra, Anichebe

    0 itb, 1 FT

    Thinking of this team:

    Foster, Jaku
    Coleman, Walker, Alonso, Yoshida, Friend
    Sanchez, Firmino, Alli, Phillips, Carroll
    Kane, Ibra, Gray

Kane can be Costa when Chelsea's fixtures are good again.

      Foster
      Van Aan, Baines/Coleman, Friend, Nyom

      Aguero, Ibra

      Thats not a bad side

1 FT for this week. Planning to hold for as long as possible. 1.5 ITB to fix my defence these next few GWs.

    Need to dump Vertonghen:
    1) Baines
    2) Coleman
    3) Rose/Walker

    Also have Evans (frustratingly):

    A) Brunt
    B) Chambers
    C) Gamble on fitness again and FT to Brunt next GW

Leaning towards Coleman as a differential and playing in the BGW. That means I'd have Alonso, Coleman and Evans playing. Lovren benched with the next move being Evans --> Brunt.

Main question is should I stick with the idea of only doing 1 each or just do both for a hit now?

      Hi
      2C for me.
Agree with the Coleman differential theory , also was looking at the average positions overall in the last couple of games.
Coleman is miles in front of Baines who is much further back.
Guessing Coleman is more younger and has more stamina now, Baines is only there for his experience .
Got Baines myself in a hurry last week before seeing that but gutted to have missed Coleman. Have a gut feeling Coleman should become more essential than Baines in 3-4 weeks .

Get B from Gw 25 , good fixtures for Boro then again.

Thanks for the advice and the info on Coleman/Baines. 🙂 Will make a difference in m decision-making for sure. Seems like a toss up between Rose and Coleman. Rose's yellow card issue might sway things to Coleman.

Good shout on Chambers. Looking to perhaps bring him in for Lovren either before or after Brunt.

Usually wouldn't have recommended Coleman but the fact is he is already known for his goalscoring tendencies over many seasons .
Added to that he is playing wingback in a 3-5-2 much further
This puts him miles ahead of Baines IMO .
          Wish I had seen this.

          Probably after Brunt
WBA only keep CS s Vs the smaller teams
Get brunt Asap before they dwindle away .
Last week they had a blank and nobody even recommended Brunt in as a transfer since Rose/Walker got going .
Brunt is back and so is everybody .
          Hardly see chambers punishing you.

    Foster | Pickford
    Friend | Alonso | Pieters | Yoshida | 3.9
    Sanchez | Alli | Phillips | Cabaye | Capoue
    Ibra | Aguero | Giroud

    £1.4 inb 0FT

Changes I'd make on WC are ::
    Aguero -> Kane
    Giroud -> Lukaku
    Cabaye -> Barkley/ 7.0+
    Capoue -> Carroll
    Pieters/Friend -> McAuley
    Yoshida -> F. Mori

    1. Toure The Route
      • 9 Years

      Probably.
Phillips and cabaye in a 3-4-3 with two differential strikers was never going to work out mate.
Also a lot of clean sheets are coming in since week 18-19 , defenses are more settled.
Going by what I see, your team value is low and no reliable 7 mil mid available right now.
I might just look into 3-5-2 due to this. Maybe Mirallas/Lanzini in a couple of weeks as fourth mid, Phillips as fifth.
      And a better third mid.

No need to wildcard. I'm not sure what transfer you already made, but if you sort out Cabaye you are more than fine for the next GW.

Friend, Alonso, Pieters and Yoshida are all playable next week.

Just do Cabaye to Mirallas or Barkley or Antonio and be done with it.

Well, Barkley isn't rising anytime soon and Cabaye isn't dropping anytime soon, so there is no rush.

See how the next ten days go with other matches and injuries and see if that still makes sense. At this point I like it, but who knows what could transpire in the next ten days.

      I really liked Lanzini .
Surprising he is not on the stock check article this week.
Created 5 chances and he knows how to score those goals in big games, without Payet out I'm guessing he will be the main creator as will Antonio look to share it.
But I'm guessing if you have Phillips you can't use him in a 3-4-3 unless you rotate .

Coutinho or Firmino debate is even more uncertain now with mixed fixtures and share of politics alternatively, I'm waiting for a reliable third mid to pop up.

If u look at liverpool's result against top 6, i think they r quite fixture proof... and mirallas and firmino last gw played OOP.

          Agree with what you said.
          Like Mirallas as well .
But Lanzini s creative instincts were Payet esq this week.
I think he should match Mirallas closely.

And yea Just not gutsy enough to get in a pool mid now.
However if you are, don't see any problem , could be a great differential ESP Firmino

Hazard out for Alli probably, since you don't have Kane a midfield double up looks ok.
No other third midfielder is exactly in form apart from Antonio and Firmino after yesterday .
If you don't want Alli, hold hazard for another week and evaluate again.
Also work on that defence with the cash , try getting in Walker/Rose.

Morning all, what would you do with this? Got 2 frees, want to lose Hazard but not Giroud.

    Heaton
    Jones Rose Brunt
    Sanchez Hazard Coutinho Alli Phillips
    Ibra Giroud

    Jaku Chambers Azpiliqueta Barnes

Tempted to go back to 343 but like the idea of Hazard to Eriksen and rolling the extra move.

    Any opinions welcome 🙂

Hazard to Eriksen seems prudent, and frees up cash for next week. With Phillips as your fifth mid and WBA's continuing solid run of fixtures, I wouldn't be rushing back to a 3-4-3 anytime soon.

Have a similar situation with the same formation.
If you are getting Kane in the 3-4-3 reckon it's worth it.

Or else Haz-Eriksen and Giroud-Costa soon?

My plan is Haz-Alli (Have Eriksen) and then Giroud-Costa.
And stick to 3-5-2 for now. But the lack of a reliable fourth mid is making me very nervous.
But a Coutinho/Eriksen double up there gives a good solidity as either can be the third mid if the other blanks.

Very ideal 3-5-2 this. But hoping that all these strikers in form don't cost us. Few weeks back the 3-5-2 looked gold, now Lukaku and Kane and Costa coming back having opened the gates I fear.

Yes, I only just switched to it when Costa got suspended as feel it's run its course now but now that I've got it, I quite like how it looks.

It's basically Eriksen V 3rd striker which I think Eriksen probably edges due to his price/involvement.

Can't be that this week or means holding Hazard, won't be doing that this week.

Liverpool get up for the bigger games so rather keep him out of the two.

              Fair point
Maybe it's foolish to name Coutinho as the fourth mid but with Alli s form he is def the second mid,
Coutinho and Eriksen look tied but Eriksen s form gives him the edge with two nice away fixtures.
Irrevocably Coutinho seems to be the fourth mid .

              Still mulling on this
              Is a 3-5-2 viable now?
The third striker slot has so many options now .

I don't think it's as viable as it was but even still, if you use Coutinho as the example, it's still 8.2 v 9.6/10.3 or 11.1, can't see Coutinho being any less a pick than those.

      Problem areas..

3rd striker. Can you downgrade him to 4.3 and upgrade deRoon to Phillips and go 3-5-2?

      Keepers and defense pretty solid.

1.8 or so in the bank anyway. Yea thought rondon was a good punt given the fixtures but Brom defend is where it's at

      Kept saying this everywhere
Never own Rondon, most inconsistent striker in the league for the last 2-3 seasons. Will only tempt you with fixtures.
Rather get Barnes/Crouch and go Phillips as fifth mid.
Upgrade Stanislas after this week as Stanislas Luis Phillips don't work in a 3-5-2 , been there this week and horribly failed .

    B. Baines/Coleman and Pieters/Chambers ?
