Another swashbuckling wing-back. Another midfield budget gem. Gameweek 22 provided plenty to consider, at a time when our next few moves appear more crucial than ever. Here’s our belated thoughts in digestible form…

The Player

Often kept in the shadow of team-mate and fellow Everton full-back Leighton Baines, this could now be a break-out season for Seamus Coleman.

Deployed at right wing-back, Coleman is playing with an attacking freedom that allows him to exploit the strengths in his game.

A tireless runner, Coleman also has the ability to remain composed when presented with goal scoring opportunities, as evidenced by his late strike at Selhurst Park.

Coleman was considered a winger in his fledgeling seasons – he was deployed as such in a loan spell with Blackpool and has the pace, trickery and the end product to fulfil such a role.

Ronald Koeman’s new 3-5-2 set-up is allowing Coleman to roll back the years and, in doing so, he has been transformed as a Fantasy asset.

There is proven pedigree as a goal scorer; a seven-goal return (six in FPL terms) in the 2013/14 season under Roberto Martinez highlighted a player who could contribute significantly to the Toffees attacking cause.

Coleman is on track to better that tally, as Koeman looks to supplement the steady stream of goals from Romelu Lukaku.

With four for the season, three arriving in his last 12 outings, the Irishman is on course to edge towards a double-figure goal return.

Much will depend on Koeman maintaining the current system to keep Coleman unshackled but, given recent results, we’ve every reason to expect that the 3-5-2 is here to stay.

Everton’s run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks is almost peerless and with no blanks looming, there appears little reason to overlook Coleman as a backline option that offers real potential for double-digit hauls.

The Team

We could choose to write off Swansea City’s performance at Liverpool as the “honeymoon effect” kicking in.

While we’ve seen Sam Allardyce struggle to have such an impact at Crystal Palace, there’s little doubt that both Paul Clement at Swansea and Marco Silva at Hull City have inspired almost instant improvement in their relegation-threatened sides.

But Swansea’s lift arrives hand-in-hand with a pair of new signings, both of which added instant pep to the Welshman’s performance levels.

Martin Olsson showed promise at left-back but it was Tom Carroll, in particular, who settled quickly.

Having spent 13 matches on loan at the club in 2014/15, the capture from Spurs seamlessly slotted into the Swans midfield and showed the energy and ball-carrying craft they have been lacking.

Previously so dependent on Gylfi Sigurdsson, in Carroll they appear to have another playmaker who can get beyond the striker and lend presence to the attack.

Carroll certainly demonstrated as much at Anfield, his sublime cross for Fernando Llorente’s second goal came packaged with a purposeful scurry forward, leading to Sigurdsson’s decisive effort.

Carroll, at just 4.2, looks to be a ready-made asset for those considering a shift back to 3-4-3 with their Fantasy Premier League squads.

An assured starter with the potential to bring points from our bench, he is destined for heavy traffic should he deliver further points in the coming Gameweeks.

But Sigurdsson and Llorente will surely remain the crucial elements as Clement bids to perform a rescue act.

Faced with four home matches which all present winnable scenarios, Swansea’s goalscorers on Merseyside have a platform to go on delivering and play their way back into our thinking.

Hull’s potential elimination from the FA Cup at Fulham would only increase the Swans’ stock, guaranteeing them a Gameweek 28 fixture and ensuring that Carroll, Sigurdsson and Llorente blink even brighter on our radar.

The Talking Point

The arrival of Carroll, coupled with the exciting emergence of Tom Davies at Everton, presents us with ample opportunity to reconsider our optimum formation and squad composition.

With Eden Hazard stalling badly and Philippe Coutinho yet to convince on his return for a stuttering Mane-less Liverpool outfit, there is suddenly new doubt on the merits of going heavy with our midfield spend.

With the likes of Matt Phillips, Junior Stanislas, Wilfried Zaha and the aforementioned pair of budget attractions, there is clear value available in the centre of the park to scatter around some North London heavy-hitters.

Suddenly, this flushes funds from this area of our squads. That’s cash that could be directed at the attack with a move back to 3-4-3, or even funnelled into the defence to consider Coleman and a growing cast of rearguard options offering attacking promise.

This is clearly another crossroads in our season.

With the impending blanks and double Gameweeks also entering into our thoughts, our next three transfers will be crucial in exploiting the current landscape and preparing ourselves for missing fixtures.

With Alexis Sanchez destined for a Gameweek 26 blank and with Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely to join him, the situation cries out for a strong bench.

Spreading funds, rather than locking them into one specific area of our squads could be the optimum strategy to explore at this point.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I might end up benching Ibra, Sanchez, AGUERO for GW 26. Surely have to sell Kun or Ibra.

Sell Kun at least... Depends on the substitute, doesn't it, for instance if you don't have Kane it's a obvious swap... Depends on your team too, how many transfers you need elsewhere in your team, if it's good, you can even switch Ibra to Kane and then straight back next week if you want to...

Is this level of spoon-feeding REALLY necessary!? I understand "The Scout" will write articles to support less experienced managers, but could we not allow people to do some research for themselves, or pay attention to what's going on in real life!?

But at the lurkers and lazy managers who visit here have gone out of their way to find a research, rather than had the updates just appear on their Twitter feed when they're not even thinking about their FPL team

But playing devil's advocate (and excuse my lack of Twitter knowledge) I guess they have to "follow" FPL to get these updates? Is that worse than just "following" FFS, or any other sort of PL fixture news service, which I assume just takes a few seconds to search for?

To some extent yes, but FFS tweets have never been as spoon-feeding as the FPL tweets now are (and they were a site setup to provide advice to followers).

They would (and still do, I just checked) communicate things such as injuries, transfers, reminders on the Scoutcast and links to articles, NOT "Liverpool's defeat now means there's a blank in this GW and a DGW coming up in this GW", the day after it happens.

Most of my ML rivals are not even contemplating when a DGW will be but will be reactive to when they appear in the FPL fixture list (if they even notice that).

I'm not that fussed around factual information such as fixtures - I don't think it is too unfair that all players of the game are told the same factual information by FPL.

I do agree however that FPL shouldn't be telling people the best way to play the game - that isn't the job of FPL, that's the job of FFS and the multiple other Twitter accounts that no doubt do this.

I feared that they would be flagging when DGWs were going to appear, or what to look for to spot them.

If there are articles in the coming weeks telling the whole world how to capitalise on the chips and the DGWs I will despair.

FPL intends to reach a broader audience, but I feel they risk ruining the game for those who take it seriously and make their own efforts to research

They do reward people for making early transfers . If you make early transfers you get a much better t.v which in turns allows you to build a better wildcard team in the second half of the season .

I'm not worried about my ML. I used them as an example. I'm more concerned about the wider game. We already see that FFSers often have a template. There was a very uniform approach to the DGWs last year with a couple of different variations.

Do we really want the majority of FPL to be on the same template and strategy?

The amount I've commented on this thread problem makes me seem more irate about it than I am, but I've opened the discussion and am now replying to people.

I wouldn't worry about it. My dad for example is as casual as they come & i just messaged him to check that article & he replied with "can't be arsed to read it".

my point is that if someone's that casual then they probably won't bother to read it or take the time to digest it, if they were that interested they'd come on here & take part in he daily debates as we all know it's not that straight forward & there are multiple courses of action you could take.

it's the same with the dgws/chips, I tried to help my dad by telling him to save them for the dgws & he's used them all anyway... casuals don't care about the game the same way we do

        Fair enough, to some extent.

But is it too much to ask that the hours of research and planning that some put in does give an advantage over opponents who don't put the same effort in?

The advantage should be that spending time analysing and interpreting the info will lead to better decisions.
The whole point of fantasy football is built around the sharing of information. I'm sure Ben Crellin is loving that all his hard work on charts and spreadsheets is being used by a wide range of people.
It's daft to think that they should only be known by a clique of managers just cos they spend more time than they should on fpl

I've spent enough time on this, so won't take the discussion any further, but I'll just end by saying I think the info in the FPL Tweets removes the need for any interpretation or analysis, comparing them to Ben Crellin's charts

            I can see both sides.

You don't want to just continually beat people that don't have a clue, but you feel a little hard done by that the research/time you put in is just handed to other people on a plate.

The key thing has been mentioned above though, in that despite having that information, it doesn't mean users will actually interpret it correctly or act on it, and that's where the additional time we put in pays off, I think.

It's like two guys working in the office, one busting his ass, the other doing nothing and both getting the same salary with boss not seeing the difference between them. It feels like injustice. I see your point.

But like some of other guys already said, "casuals" don't care, they do things on their own way no matter how much info there is and the ones who read articles on the internet and are trying to get better at this game are already informed enough and therefore not casuals anymore. It's gonna be all good. The game will only become more competitive this way.

As I've said previously, when the FPL decided to up their content to multiple daily articles, dedicated social channels, TV show etc there was always going to be more information out there. It's inevitable, it's their game and they want to share more information on it. Nobody can stop them doing that. And, as I've said before, if we weren't involved (and we've been working with them for five seasons), they would be hiring others to provide the same information.

We did always talk about the double GW's and blanks in our articles for them over the years, it's just they weren't daily and, crucially, there was no social media channels to push them out and raise awareness of them.

Our job on FFS is to make sure we always go deeper - the Premier League material will never be able to go into the depth and detail that we do here or the level that we discuss on the ScoutCast - so we will always have more scope on our pages and articles to embrace the subjects further.

In my view, those who play the game to the level of the FFS audience will always have the edge over those who dip in and out of the official material. Not only due to the articles, but also due to the discussions around them on the comments and through the community as a whole.

I don't want to come across that I'm having a pop at you Mark. I know if it wasn't you of FFS who were involved, someone else would only be doing it. And I realise you've had to write lengthy responses to me on this subject before.

I just find FPL's insistence on the level of information shared frustrating. The reason being that the articles and discussion on FFS always requires sifting through, divulging and applying.

What you say is right to some extent, that FFS goes into more detail, whereas the FPL Tweets seem to condense all the information into the most pertinent issues of the day, handed on a plate in bite-size chunks. Great for managers who don't want to have to think about it.

Not a moan at you Mark, but at FPL themselves. I do appreciate this great site that's been help to us all for a number of years.

"the Premier League material will never be able to go into the depth and detail that we do here or the level that we discuss on the ScoutCast"

Yes, FPL won't break down WHY a particular player is worth getting in (shots in the box, on target, OOP, etc.) but ultimately they still advertise him to the masses. Basically, "here's a player with good fixtures, we've done the number crunching for you, trust us he's worth getting in". It's just high level spoon-feeding dressed up imo.

Players like Phillips and Stanislas have been advertised on a much bigger scale lately, taking away our differentials. Yes, on here they would have been advertised, but through member's content and even the odd post throughout one of the many articles published daily. On twitter, people can be alerted of such updates and just scan through for the juicy bits, something that wouldn't be so widespread for the lazy players on here. Hence the FPL managers that do the research still having that edge.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter whether they go into depth analysis or not. If spoon-fed players pick Player X up and he scores points it makes no difference really whether they were aware of how many shots he was racking up or not over the last few weeks. The end product and effect on rank is still there at the end of the day.

Just my two cent's worth. Like Jossy said, not having a pop, just my view on the whole situation. Especially with how annoying it is losing an edge of DGWs and such, which many members on here researched for the good of a community atmosphere in the past. Rather than retweet numbers on social media and commercial gain.

I haven't read the PL site much this season but just taking a look at that article, I don't think the problem is with that site at all -- I think it is pretty good analysis and looks pretty slick. Whether or not that is spoon-feeding is irrelevant, as some talented people are contributing to it and making it much better than in seasons past. Good on them.

The bigger issue for this site is how will it continue to provide an edge over that one, since frankly FFS does a ton of spoonfeeding for us as well -- can anyone who read Balders masterpieces last year on the DGWs really claim some kind of superiority as an FPL player? I for one ate those up and was greatly advantaged by his work.

I only am in minileagues through this site, so maybe I am being insensitive to those beating the so-called masses who don't know about FFS, fplstats, FPLDiscovery, etc., but you really can't blame the official site of the game that we are all playing for making the playing field as even as possible.

“We have Walcott back in the squad, we lose [Granit] Xhaka because he’s suspended and [Mohamed] Elneny is at the Africa Cup of Nations,” Wenger said on Thursday.
“The good news is Mertesacker and Debuchy are back in training tomorrow but we are a bit short in midfield at the moment. Cazorla is still out
“We will put a team with first-team experience in there, maybe one or two younger players. I’ve not decided completely who will play but it’s the first-team squad.”

Depends on the cup game, Wenger will probably give Wally some minutes or even start him, but IMO that doesn't mean Giroud's starting place vs Watford is in danger.

The thing with Mirallas is he has less minutes so it helps his PPG/90 minutes.

Isn't a GW24 the most likely time for Southampton vs Arsenal and the Manchester derby to be rescheduled?

The only free mid-weeks are GWs 24 (FA Cup 4th round replays), 26 (5th round replays), 34 (moved QF clashes) and 37 (moved SF clashes). If one of the teams involved win this weekend then they could have other matches in all of those slots.

Otherwise the EFL would have to apply to UEFA to play them in a week when the UCL was on, and I can't see them wanting big name teams over-shadowing their fixtures + 3 of the teams are still in Europe.

Is there a legal requirement for league matches to have a certain notice period?

Logistically, it would be the same notice as arranging an FA Cup replay - so would be achievable (if not ideal).

I really think Barkley is going to fire soon, just a case of getting him in at the right time
Defoe is potentially a season keeper

Don't think either necessarily need to go. Antonio not blanking as well, would be useful to keep,

Was thinking that also. I remember him being a goal threat last season, would also cover Baines random injury

How are people dealing with the blank GW26?

I have Aguero Ibra Sanchez and Yoshida. Yoshida isn't a problem as I'll just bench him.

I will almost certainly be doing Aguero>Costa that week. Aguero has good fixtures until that week and then after that week Costa's are good.

I will lose a fair bit on Sanchez and Ibra but their price might drop anyway that week and I will have Aguero money to buy back for the doubles.

Benching 2 big hitters means I risk a low score and if they are out for GW28 too this will compound. Their fixtures are too good up until then to do much else so will save a transfer if I can but then i'll have to decide which to bench and which to transfer.

Noone has funds tied up in Aguero, so that's an easy transfer

        Heaton / Pickford
        Alonso / Holebas / Mcauley / Kingsley / Ake
Hazard / Alli / Sanchez / Phillips / De Roon
        Ibra / Giroud / Defoe
        1 FT & 0.3 ITB

        I'm thinking: Hazard + Ake -> Eriksen + Baines for -4

Better suggestions? going baines over coleman is crazy?

I went Coleman. Just prefer him to Baines, 50/50 though.

Missing starters may give the opportunity for cheap back ups to play, but usually the back ups are not as good.
In this case, MID's defence might have been tight with Chambers, but it may not be as tight without him, making Bernardo a tricky pick
