We’ve reached the point in the Fantasy Premier League season where “blank” Gameweeks are looming and, by preparing your squad early, you could give yourself the edge over mini-league rivals.

A “blank” occurs when a Premier League fixture has to be postponed and cannot be rescheduled to a date within the same Gameweek.

The most common reason for postponements in the Premier League is when fixtures clash with the latter rounds of the two main domestic cup competitions. Like last season, postponements this time around will be caused by clashes with the EFL Cup Final (Gameweek 26), the FA Cup Quarter-finals (Gameweek 28) and the FA Cup Semi-finals (Gameweek 34).

Gameweek 26

Southampton and Manchester United will meet in the EFL Cup Final on Sunday February 26 and the Gameweek 26 fixtures featuring those teams have already been postponed. Those fixtures are:

Southampton vs Arsenal
Manchester City vs Manchester United

It’s safe to assume that these postponed fixtures will be blanks. The following midweek is reserved for potential FA Cup Fifth Round replays and Arsenal and the two Manchester clubs have reached that round, so it’s unlikely that they’d risk rescheduling either fixture to those midweek dates.

Gameweek 28

Again, the postponed fixtures in Gameweek 28 will almost certainly result in blanks; there will be Champions League ties in the following midweek and we know for a fact that rearranged Premier League matches can only played on the same night as Champions League matches if there are no other available dates; this won’t be the case in Gameweek 28.

Any Gameweek 28 fixture that features an FA Cup Quarter-finalist will become a blank.

The draw for the FA Cup Fifth Round has been made this evening and is detailed below.

Burnley vs Lincoln
Fulham vs Tottenham Hotspur
Blackburn Rovers vs Manchester United
Sutton United vs Arsenal
Middlesbrough vs Oxford United
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Chelsea
Huddersfield vs Manchester City
Millwall vs Leicester City or Derby County

Below we’ve listed the Gameweek 28 fixtures and next to each match you can see the probability of it becoming a blank and the permutations that will cause it to become a blank.

The probabilities are calculated using the bookies’ odds of each team progressing to the FA Cup Quarter-finals. These are based on early odds and may be revised in the next 24-hours.

members

Three of the fixtures are between teams that have both already been knocked out of the FA Cup, so we know that the following teams definitely won’t have blanks in Gameweek 28.

Bournemouth
West Ham United
Everton
West Bromwich Albion
Hull City
Swansea City

Incredibly, all eight FA Cup Fifth Round ties feature Premier League teams facing up against teams from the lower leagues (assuming Leicester win their Fourth Round replay against Derby), so we could get a maximum of seven blank fixtures in Gameweek 28.

We could even get zero blanks in Gameweek 28, but for that to happen all eight remaining Premier League sides would have to lose to their lower league opponents. The odds of that happening are astronomical.

Gameweek 34

The Premier League teams who reach the FA Cup semi-finals will have their Gameweek 34 fixtures postponed.

However, the midweek in Gameweek 34 is one of two slots in the second half of the season which are kept vacant to be used for rescheduling purposes. Therefore, it seems likely that the postponed Gameweek 34 fixtures will be moved forward a few days to midweek dates and thus protecting the semi-finalists from suffering blanks.

The other free slot open for the scheduling of postponed fixtures is Gameweek 37: I remain confident that this will be the most significant double Gameweek of the season.

Transfer Plans

The Blanks in Gameweeks 26 and 28 will be particularly difficult to navigate. Some of the most valuable and widely owned FPL players – including Alexis Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – will blank in Gameweek 26, while Gameweek 28 could be even more chaotic.

In the main, it’s recommended that the upcoming blanks inform every transfer decision that you make between now Gameweek 30.

Thankfully, most* of the Gameweek 28 Blanks will be confirmed before the Gameweek 26 deadline; the FA Cup Fifth Round ties will be played on the weekend of February 18 and the Gameweek 26 deadline is on February 25.

Regardless of the state of your current FPL squad, I’d strongly advise preserving two free transfers heading into FA Cup Fifth Round weekend; if you’ll need to take a four point hit to field a full active XI in Gameweek 26, take the hit after the Fifth Round.

Ideally, between now and the Gameweek 25 deadline, you should spend the fewest possible transfers and only acquire players from teams who definitely won’t suffer blanks in Gameweeks 26 and 28 (Bournemouth, West Ham, Everton, West Brom, Hull and Swansea).

According to the Fixture Ticker and as revealed in this week’s Frisking the Fixtures article, Everton and Swansea have the second and third most favourable fixtures between now and Gameweek 30 respectively.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.2) is the key target at Swansea, but if you’re looking for a cheaper option, then new signing Tom Carroll (4.2) was outstanding on his debut at Anfield.

Meanwhile, the Toffees have scored eight without conceding in their three league games in 2017 and their popular FPL assets all appear to offer strong value over the coming weeks. Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman (both 5.6), Kevin Mirallas (6.1), Ross Barkley (7.0) and Romelu Lukaku (9.6) will all prove popular targets from this point on.

Mason Holgate (4.1) and Tom Davies (4.4) could also present strong budget options, although their starting roles are still not guaranteed. Assured starters are essential for cover in the blank Gameweeks: Roberto Funes Mori (4.6) might be a safer alternative to Holgate, for example.

When deciding who to sell before the Gameweek 25 deadline, your first priority should be to make sure that you can get a full active XI in Gameweek 26, and then concentrate on preparing for Gameweek 28. Save the tougher transfer decisions for after the Fifth Round of the FA Cup.

Remember, you can keep three outfield players with blanks on your bench during Gameweeks 26 and 28.

There are a number of factors to consider when deciding which players with blanks to keep and bench.

You should consider how much the player’s value has increased since you bought them, whether they’ll have two blanks or just one, the strength of their fixtures around their blank Gameweeks and, of course, their current form.

Unless you’re unable to field full active XI in the blank Gameweeks without many four point hits, I’d advise against using the Wildcard to prepare for the upcoming blanks. You’ll gain more of an advantage from putting it to use preparing for the double Gameweeks later in the season.

I’ll provide another article in the week leading up to the Gameweek 26 deadline.

Most*, if not all of the Gameweek 28 blanks will have been confirmed by then, so a transfer plan will be easier to devise, hopefully allowing you to ensure you have a full XI of active players in both of the upcoming blank Gameweeks.

*If an FA Cup Fifth Round tie involving a Premier League team goes to a replay, we’ll have to wait until the midweek after Gameweek 26 (February 28th/March 1st) for all of the Gameweek 28 Blanks to be confirmed.

    Worth saving the transfer?
Here is the team for this week:

    Heaton
    Alonso Baines Brunt
    Sanchez(v) Hazard Eriksen Stanislas
    Kane(c) Lukaku Rondon
    (Jaku) (deRoon Lovren Amat)

    A: save the transfer
B: Lovren to Valencia, play 442, benching Rondon.

I'm not terribly concerned about getting a ManU player despite the gw26 blank. (no Ibra, only other blanking player is Sanchez).

    Thanks

      Grant(jaku)
      Baines brunt (azpi yoshida chambers)
      Sanchez(C) alli pogba Stanislas Philips
      Ibra lukaku giroud
      Currently on AOA.
Don't wanna sell chambers as he is returning back from injury next gw and I might sell yoshida for a gw 26/28 defender. Any others moves that I can make this gw?

Is giroud to rondon just for this week sensible? Middlesbrough have a weakened defense this week.

Any sensible reason why Ibrahimovic is not leading the captain poll?
Is it just because he actually blanked last weekend?
I don't have him, but going up against a depleted Hull at Old Trafford... seems insane not to captain him if you have him.
I'll be hiding behind the sofa (well, I'll be at work since it will be the afternoon in my part of the world, so I guess I'll have to actually focus on work rather than checking the scores, or something...)

Well thats not a good point with to argue for sure.
              Most owned player
Sanchez more pricy so that means Sanchez not worth having too ? if you don't captain him

Sanchez is the highest scorer in the game, but his fixture is not as good as Ibrahimovic's. I'd captain Sanchez plenty of gameweeks other than this one.
But yes, if you spend 10m+ on any player but never captain them, they you're doing it wrong. You're better off downgrading and spending the money on better value elsewhere.

I would just say Captain Whoever you want 😉 in this case Ibra.

No point asking why ppl are not captaining this and this as they musy have there own reasons for whom they captaining. Ibra is a great captain choice this week just like others 🙂

If a player consistently gets 1 goal or 1 assist per week, his points at the end could be higher than an explosive player - who you could have to captain at the right time to take advantage of

Hull have looked far better than Watford in the last 3 games. Not to mention that Sanchez gets more points for goals and the CS point is almost guaranteed.
Ibra played Hull twice already, scoring 0 goals and assists.

Don't think the cup draw could have been much worse with regards to GW 28. No way am I going out hell bent on fielding 11 with what fixtures we know will go ahead at this stage.

I think I might be able to stretch to 8 players from the teams we know will play for sure, as for the rest?? I think I'll just hope for a cup upset or 2.

I currently have Brunt, Phillips, Francis, Stanislas, & Amat (unlikely) who play in 28, I'll get in Lukaku for Giroud after tonight, then maybe Siggy in for Lallana & maybe Jaku in for Pickford at some point. Coleman in for Walker is a possibility. The likes of Ibra/Kane & Sanchez may leave my team, but more likely for Costa & Hazard for 26 rather than for a GW 28 player.

Need a new defender with Van Dijk out till March, any suggestions? Have 5.8 in the bank to work with and my other defenders are Walker, Baines, Brunt, and Daniels.

        Potential options:

If you're well set up for the blanks, then look at Jones/Valencia.
Looking at United's fixtures, there will be more than a few clean sheets.

But it's not worth it if it will only force you to take hits later on.

I'd go for Coleman in that case.

I'd go with Nyom to save money you can use elsewhere and still someone who plays in both 26 and 28.

With Walker, Baines, Brunt and Daniels you don't need another expensive defender, IMO.

Somebody above mentioned West Brom and seeing as I work less than 5mins from the Hawthorns (with WBA season ticket holders); I thought I'd share my findings.

The Home and Away fan rates the defence in this order (in terms of overall quality and importance to the side)......
        1 Evans
2 McAuley (Defensive form nosedived since November)
        3 Nyom
4 Brunt (Weirdly unpopular amongst a lot of them)
        5 Dawson
6 Olsson (Past it; no CS with him on the pitch)

        Nyom/Evans/McAuley/Brunt

Pulis likes Dawson though and promoted him to the first team as a defensive RB but Nyom is (based on form) the best full back at the club. He doesn't think Brunt will play LB against top 6 teams anymore after Man Utd and Spurs but will against the others. Without Evans CS prospects drop massively.

He's also convinced Callum Wilson will be signing either now or in the summer and that Fletcher needs replacing too in July.

Overall though he's confident of a finish between 8th and 10th and thinks their matches nowadays are easy to predict.....
Two goal winning margins against weaker sides at home. Narrow wins or draws when away to them and likewise when at home to mid table teams. Losses to all the top 6.

            I'm happy enough with Jakupovic.

          Valdes Grant
          Rose Baines Brunt Pieters Yoshida
          Sanchez Alli Eriksen Phillips Stanilas
          Ibra Lukaku Defoe

0.0 ITB, 2 FT, WC used.

Need to make a transfer with gw28 in mind. I have 5 players atm with 7 FT until then, so planning is crucial without WC.

          1) Valdes->Randolph
          2) Valdes->Boruc
          3) Defoe->Carroll
          4) Pieters -> Nyom
          5) Other?

The PL teams who don't have a UEFA CL/Europa fixture in midweek after GW 28, can't their GW 28 PL fixture be kept in that midweek?

PL games normally don't clash with CL games. Not great for TV etc.

Riiiight .... I know my midfield looks sooooo 2016

                Heaton/PIck
                Alonso Brunt Baines (pieters amat)
                Haz Sanchez Lallana Phillips (fletcher)
                Kane Ibra Benteke

GTG or would you take a hit for Lallana, or bench Lallana and play Pieters (makes little sense probably cause I have Baines too)?

-4 would be for Antonio or Siggy

They have Europa league games just prior to that. They ll surely field their second string team. So may be a chance of upset there ?

Sky Germany also said Kolašinac won't be leaving today, and their deadline has already passed.

Baba's ACL injury means Weinzierl can't really afford to lose him this month. Seems he'll remain a Royal Blue until the summer when his contract expires. Chelsea were just trying to steal a march on others.

Selling. 2 blanks and bad fixtures. New in form players in Ars attack (perez, Wallet, welback) so he is not going to be striker again. Bought him at 11.5 so he will drop below my sale value of 11.7.
He is great player, but its game is about regular points.

Would you do Toby and Evans to Valencia and Brunt for -4pts?

                        Or Evans to someone 4.5m?

Wont be able to play 3 defenders in that case...

Could you afford Evans to Funes Mori?
                          Surely would not ditch Toby
or a Sideways move to Nyom if you don't have 3 playing defenders this week.

Nope, only 0.1 in bank 😳

Toby just looks like a waste of money, will probably drop him in 2 weeks time if he doesnt get a goal soon

think he is due a goal 😉

Nyom maybe is your best bet?
or field 10 and save Ft maybe

                                hit could also pay off
but I am wary of a Toby 15 pointer

2 FT feel I might as well use one of them:

                        Lallana > Siggy

                        or Chambers >?

Yes would use th FT as you have 2

                          Lallana to Siggy or Antonio
                          Chambers to Coleman/Baines
