A single goal from an unlikely source takes Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals following a feisty match with Manchester United.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

N’Golo Kante’s fine strike was enough to see off a battling Manchester United who played much of a compelling encounter with ten men.

The Chelsea midfielder, who was set up by Willian, steered home a shot from outside the box after the break.

The goal had an air of inevitability about it – the Blues out-shot their visitors by 20 to four and enjoyed 73% possession – but much of that dominance arose after Ander Herrera was sent off for a second yellow card.

The actual foul that led to the Spaniard’s dismissal was almost nondescript, but he was essentially paying for the sins of a team who had spent the first-half targeting Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard.

Herrera will now miss the next two league matches against Middlesbrough and West Brom – this was his second sending-off of the season – although that will have little Fantasy impact as the midfielder is owned by just 0.7%.

United’s task was always going to be a tough one. Without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jose Mourinho looked like having to cobble together a side shorn of any recognised forward at all until Marcus Rashford, who had been ill, declared himself fit enough to play.

The young England forward acquitted himself well but will rue seeing the one clear chance he had saved by the otherwise under-employed Thibaut Courtois.

Having trialled a back three in the Europa League draw with Rostov, Mourinho was expected to roll out the same formation at Stamford Bridge, only to demonstrate his squad’s flexibility by reverting to a back four.

Phil Jones was again in the starting XI but deployed in a holding midfield role, charged mainly with attempting to diffuse the threat from Hazard. It remains to be seen if Mourinho persists with this ploy: it seems likely that Jones will now revert to a central defensive role.

At 4.7, Jones represents the cheapest of United regular starters in defence, and could capitalise on an immediate schedule that involves Middlesbrough, West Brom, Everton and Sunderland, with the toughest of those matches, Everton, taking place at Old Trafford.

The case for Jones would be strengthened further still if Marcos Rojo is cited for what appeared to be a stamp on Diego Costa, with whom he had a running battle all evening.

Rashford (6.4) also looks good for further starts as Ibrahimovic will miss the next two league matches and Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are struggling to overcome the injuries that forced them out of last night’s clash. Certainly, for the clashes with Boro and West Brom, Rashford could offer a short-term differential.

For Chelsea, Pedro’s position as an unused sub in last night’s match could raise mild concern for his growing band of 9% FPL owners. The Spaniard is the fourth most transferred in midfielder since last weekend, having provided two goals and a pair of assists in his last three, yet he resorted to bench-warming duties as Willian was preferred on the right of the front three instead. Nonetheless, Pedro will be expected to earn a recall at Stoke City in Gameweek 29.

Indeed, with Victor Moses forced off with a reported calf problem in the latter stages, both Pedro and Willian could be unleashed from the start at the bet365 this weekend if the Nigerian fails to make it; Pedro would be the likely deputy at right wing-back.

The all-Premier League semi-finals – Chelsea v Tottenham and Man City v Arsenal – will take place over the weekend of April 22 and 23 during Gameweek 34.

Man City could be in Champions League quarter-final action leading up to that weekend, but there looks to be scope for the Gameweek fixtures involving all four teams to be moved to the midweek after the FA Cup semi-finals.

Chelsea are due to entertain Southampton, Spurs are at Leicester, Arsenal are home to Sunderland and Man City host West Brom.

Chelsea XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses (Zouma 89), Kante, Matic, Alonso, Willian (Fabregas 81), Costa (Batshuayi 90+4), Hazard.
Subs not used: Begovic, Pedro, Terry, Chalobah.

Man United XI: de Gea, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia, Ander Herrera, Pogba, Darmian, Mkhitaryan (Fellaini 37), Rashford, Young (Lingard 81).
Subs not used: Romero, Bailly, Mata, Carrick, Blind.

    Hi guys!

    What's best between these two?

    1) Llorente + Eriksen (Sterling out)
    2) Costa + Son (Llorente and Sterling out, -4)

Still can't see myself doing Son for the reasons I said yesterday, but (classic FPL addict behaviour) today B does look really tempting, at least in the short term.

I should just do A after pressers, right?

    🙂

Has anyone ever done any statistical analysis into the validity of the notion of "covering"?

I'm thinking along the lines of correlation/covariance/R-squared to see how strong the relationship is between the points of different attacking assets within one team. Could be useful heading in to DGWs when everyone's targeting teams almost as much as they're targeting individual players.

I made the same mistake and am now not sure what to do this week. Didn't really want to take another hit, but don't want to be without a key attacker. I have Lukaku and Carroll alongside him and don't want to lose a lot of value either. Costa is the safe bet, I would say - you know he'll play and he'll get goals. Janssen's a gamble, Llorente is an option as well - both let you go bigger in midfield if you're prepared to take hits.

Aiming for this team by gw 31.

    Foster - Jakupovic
    Valencia - Vertonghen - Yoshida - Amat - Lenihan
    Sanchez - Mane - Alli - Sigurdsson - Carrick
    Aguero - Lukaku - Defoe

Needs 6 transfers. Will do 2 each over next 3 gws.

Will have 3 more gws to bring the other dgwers for gw 34.

    Thoughts please?

Only 4 players are same 😳

Looks good but not really a fan of Amat, Yoshida, Lenihan, Carrick in same team. By downgrading Aguero, you can get some better players for them

      Similar to my plan, but:
      Gabbadiani > Defoe

Also you can afford Walker and Bellerin for Vertongen and Lenihan if you go Costa for Aguero.

        Hmm. ..food for thought.

I like Aguero as a differential.

Want him for gw 32 vs hull as captain.

Costa rarely gets double figures as well.

That whole thing was press froth. I was there.

There may have been a couple of Chelsea fans abusing Mourinho, I don't know. But there was nothing of that where I was, quite the reverse. Mourinho is still very popular among Chelsea supporters in general, as you would expect when he is our greatest ever manager.

I know what it's like when Stamford Bridge turns on someone. There was no sign of that last night.

The United fans were great, by the way. Loud and persistent, as away fans in a big FAC game should be.

Ok.. 11 games to be refixed. Here is how I 'think' it might go:

    Postponed GW26 games:
Sou v Arsenal - The 'Wildcard'. There is not a free spot in either GW34 or 37 for this, so will be the 'rogue' fixture. Likely DGW for both when played.
    Man C v Man U - Banker for GW37. Double for both.

    Postponed GW28 games:
Mid v Sun - potentially GW37, but I'm not sure the police would want a midweek relegation decider, so I think this goes to GW34 (saturday). Bournemouth v Mid would be moved to midweek. Both teams would have a double (Sun would play Arsenal..see below)
    Chelsea v Watford - GW34.
Palace V Spurs - Banker GW37. Doubles for both teams
Sou v Man U- Midweek GW34. Double for Man U (bur, sou) but single for Sou.
    Arsenal v Leicester - Banker GW37

    Postponed GW34 games:
Arsenal v Sunderland - moved to midweek GW34. Single for Arsenal, double for Sunderland
Man City v WBA - Moved to midweek GW34. Singles for both
Spurs v Leicester - Moved to midweek GW34. Singles for both
Chelsea v Southampton - Moved to midweek GW37 (to allow Sou & Man U to 'catch up' one of their games in GW34 - they both need the two slots for refixed games). Both teams have doubles.

    Summary:
GW34 doubles - Man U, Middlesborough, Sunderland, Watford
GW37 doubles - Man U, Man C, Arsenal, Leicester, Chelsea, Southampton, Palace, Spurs
Coud be anywhere! - Southampton v Arsenal DGW

Too much assumption. The number of games involved is correct but it's all downhill from there.

Soton v Arsenal is probably GW35 or GW36.

City v United is not a "banker" for GW37, it could equally be GW34 and there are rumours that it will be.

There could be as little as one team with a GW34 double. The four you mention is the maximum.

Basically the whole thing is erroneous and/or based on assumptions that may or may not be met.

A bit off topic here, but, name the one player you think would be a great fantasy football asset that isn't currently playing in the premier league. (Try not to say Ronaldo or Messi, because we all know they would be fantastic).

Considering position and price for me it would have to be David Alaba or Jordi Alba. Both great defenders that offer so much going forward and would probably only be priced between 6.5-7. Bargain!

Everton, they are really good at home. Boro - United could end up 0-0, Boro never look like scoring so it's down to if we can raise our game for the early kick off and break them down.

If Koeman stays at the Toffees I hope he does some business with Ross. Sell him for a part ex with Son and get another 25 mil to spend on a left back a quick central defender (VVD) and a top keeper. With the youngsters we will be on our way to competing for top 4. Please stay Kaku!

He is now but consistency is not his strong point. I have been frustrated for 2 seasons now and his stock is going up for a big sale.

do you think they'll look to replace Baines in the summer? He is getting on a bit and has offered less this season than a few years ago
